Any ideas for decorating a trunk to use for a coffee table?

I will be receiving a flat top trunk that is already painted a plain beige or some other light color that doesn't go with anything I have in my livingroom. I want to use it for a coffee table. It will need painting and I want to do something to modernize it. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated!
I would probably go with a very dark (almost black) brown if I paint it that way. I'm looking for something creative to do to it after painting it a basic color. This is really the ideas I'm asking for.

Can I use a coffee table as a flat bench for my dumbbell exercises?

Planning on buying a flat bench, but can't right now. My coffee table is flat and I can get my feet on the ground. Could I use it to do my dumbbell flys, presses, incline flies, etc.? Is there anything wrong with doing this?

it's all about the free rotation of your shoulders. my coffee table is too wide, I couldn't ever get my arms back low enough for proper form doing fly's.
