Need a fairly cheap tent campground with basic bathroom and drinking water facilities near hiking trail(s). Looking to head there Friday evening after work and return Sunday evening on a train and/or bus.

Thanks!

Answer
Floyd Bennett Field
Manhattanites have always considered Brooklyn to be something of a wilderness, but it may still come as a surprise to learn that you can actually camp thereâand weâre not talking about sleeping on the sidewalk. This abandoned-airport-turned-national-park in Marine Park has room for about 100 campers, each site with a fire pit and picnic tableâand not much else. (It may be the only place in New York City where holes in the ground are considered acceptable bathroom facilities.) Itâs a little slice of serenityâ¦with bonus noise from JFK-bound planes that occasionally fly nearby!
Price: $50 per campsite for a three-night stay.
Getting there: Take the 2 or 5 train (at rush hour) to Flatbush Avenue and transfer to the Rockaway Parkâbound Q35 bus. Call 718-338-3799 for reservations.

What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base?

Tamera C

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

Answer
the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

Answer
livingroom-couch, a chair or two, tv stand, end tables, coffee table, lamps and book shelves, tv
Bedroom-bed,book shelves, night stand, dresser, vanity, warbrobe, sheets, pillows, lamp, radio, alarm clock, full length mirror,
Kitchen- table and chair set, fridge, dish washer, plates, flat wear, glasses, dish towels, cooking wear
bathroom-towel, a stand alone cubboard for things like towels and stuff or just by a booksehelf its cheaper
(If)den-alot of fluffy chairs, a couch, and ookshelves instead of puttig them in the livingroom
General-curtains, washer and dryer, rugs, plants (I would go for fake ones that you don't have to take carre of) personal items like pictures, and stuff make it look like your own
cleaning supplies- like broom, dust pan, soap for dishes and cloths, light bulbs,
I personally don't like my stuff to match, like in my living room for example I have an ugly brown plad recliner, a van bench seat, and bean bags with old fashion sewing tables as end tables, a vanity seat for a cofee table, and a unicorn lamp.

Is it selfish when someone has food on their plate, but they take more food?

Nam

My friend tends to do this A LOT! We eat with each other, and he grabs a load of food to put on his plate. For example, there are several more shrimp left; I have nothing on my plate, while he has a lot on his, and he takes the last of the shrimp. Is this selfish?

Answer
A way to solve this problem is to put each person's food onto their plates and do not have a shared bowl from which to take the food. If there's any left over, don't mention it, simply leave it on the kitchen bench and when he has finished eating, and you're full as well, tell him that if he's still hungry he may have what's still left on the kitchen bench. Don't always have some left over, or he'll just stand up and race you to where he knows there's food. Sometimes have extra, at other times don't have any extra. He'll slowly learn to ask, and will probably learn to follow the good example you've set down for him by asking if you have finished and if you'd like more food. Sometimes, it's better to put ideas into practise than to try and verbally instruct others. The chances of his having seen and heard of table etiquette are high, he just needs to stop and think about what he's doing.

Places to get Engaged?

three tables beach oahu on Hawaii Weddings and Hawaiian ceremony Packages on Oahu
three tables beach oahu image

Mike Paige

Can you name three nice places of witch I can ask my Girlfriend to marry me. She knows its coming but doesn't know when.

Answer
Congratulation! I think its so romantic when two people knows they belong together. Now you want 3 places so you can take your girlfriend and ask for her hand. I do not know what state you are in, but my number choice is the island of Oahu. Yes that is my hometown and Hawaii is the most alluring, romantic place a girl can get engage. But if money is the problem, (I know plane ticket) you can pick a beach, take her and make sure the two of you will have dinner for 2 away from people or crowds. Second place could be a dinner cruise, 2 hours of being in the water having dinner during sunset. And the 3rd will be the old fashion way if you wanted it, plan a night with her, at your place. Put together a romantic dinner for two, with lots of candles lite, soft music, maybe with wine? To add more love with that dinner you will put together, scatter red roses petals all over the floor where you will set the table for two and from there you will know what to do. Reminder please, no cell phone, no tv, only soft music..Good luck!

extended stay in hawaii...?

zZzZ...

does anyone know if any of the hawaiian islands have an exteded stay type hotel? where you can actually live in for a couple months?

Answer
There are A LOT all over the islands. I spent the last 3 years of my life living on Oahu, and I got to travel around to other islands a lot while I was there. It depends on where you want to live, and what conditions you're willing to put up with. I'll give you three recommendation is that I've stayed in.

The first one is on Oahu's North Shore. It's called the Backpackers. We stayed there for just one night when we first moved to Hawaii. It's at a pretty little beach called Three Tables, and it's within walking distance to one of my favorite beaches, Waimea Bay. They have dorm style living (where you share a room with many people) or you can get your own room. Ours was a corner room with an ocean view. There's a kitchen and books and snorkels and all kinds of stuff for you to do. The only thing it doesn't have is location close to jobs. So, if you're going to be working while you're in Hawaii, this might not be a good option for you.

The next one is also on Oahu. It's in Waikiki, like a block and a half from "the duke statue" which is just a landmark people. It's right in front of the main Waikiki beach where they rent surfboards. The Kuhio Village is a hotel/apartment that has one tower for hotel guests and another that they rent out like apartments. We stayed in the hotel side, but stayed one night with a friend in the apartment side. They basically had just a hotel room with a small kitchenette and a balcony, and that's where they lived for 6 months. This hotel is not luxury living though. Everywhere in Hawaii has cockroaches, and this place definitely has it's fair share. It's not a nice, new, luxury resort, but if you're looking for a cheap place to live with a killer location (you can work in Waikiki in a restaurant or bar and make really good money with very few hours), then this is the place for you.

The third place I'll recommend is on the Big Island in Kailua-Kona. We stayed there for one night when we visited the Big Island, but I wish we had stayed there longer. It's within walking distance from super fun Kailua Kona (you can also get a job there if you need extra cash on your trip). I loved Kailua. And the Big Island is definitely something to see. This hostel is more like just a big house that was converted. We had our own private room (again, corner room with ocean view) and we shared a living space with one other couple sharing a room. There was a nice kitchen, TV area, dining area, great big shared balcony with BBQ and hammock, and Internet access.

I would stay in all three of these places again. I put links here for you too, so you can take a look and maybe get prices and rates. Hopefully it will help you make your decision. A lot of people do what you're considering, go to Hawaii for a few months.

I would probably recommend doing all three!! Go to the one in Waikiki, and making that your home base. But maybe go to the one on the North Shore when you first get there for a little 5 day vacation. Then, when you're ready to head home and fly back to the mainland, go to the Big Island for 5 days and stay at that one. That would be a great trip. :)

Have fun!

Have any fun/original ideas for Luau wedding reception??? :)?

We are getting married on Maui in May and having a reception at home in June. It will be indoors and we have already hired a DJ and Hawaiian dancers. I am looking for decoration ideas or anything cool you have seen or can think of! Thanks a bunch :)

Answer
You can decorate with pineapples, coconuts, palm trees, and if you have kids that are attending set up a knee high volleyball (with a beach ball of course) and you could have the adults play beach blanket bingo (twister).

I would have shishkabobs, roasted pig on a spit (or represented by a spiral ham with pineapple glaze and rings on top). A great fruit salad could be pineapple chunks, marachino cherrys, kiwi and oranges.

The above mentioned pineapples can be scooped out and filled with either pineapple chunks or serve a pineapple juice cocktail with a small straw and umbrella. The coconuts can be cleaned out and serve a coconut rum drink. Use the coconut meat on the desert table. Take inflatable coolers and fill with ice and use it for soft drinks and bottled water.

If you want to make your own leis, the simple and inexpensive way would take carnations, pop the head off from the stem and use a needle and heavy duty thread to string the petals to form the lei. If you keep the carnations in the refrigerator and then take them out just before the reception they will have a chance to come alive with fragrance and last the whole reception and longer too.

The bar could be a tiki hut and your tables could have linen with grass skirting and tassels attached.

Birthday party for a 7 year old? any ideas thanks alott..?

Alejandra.

ok well im 19 and my daughter is turning 7 in a few months and im planning her party. she is a girly girl. just like her mama she wants something big and special but shes only gonna be 7 so its not like her quinceanera but she wants something like that...
idk anyone have some ideas? thanks alot..
i was 13 when i had my baby i will be 20 before she turns 7.

Answer
Aw! She sounds like a cutie. :]
Here are two ideas she might like ::

[ PRINCESS/ROYALTY BIRTHDAY PARTY ]
1. INVITES: The invitations can be royal scrolls, glass princess slippers, castle invitations, or knights on royal steeds. Just be sure to make them really special by using a fancy font, calligraphy, or a golden glitter ink. Be sure to give the start time, end time, date and location of the royal ball. Since they are usually hand delivered, you can roll them in a scroll and tie them with a bow or seal them with an official royal wax seal.

2. DECORATIONS: Set the mood for your party with great decorations like a balloon archway and a royal red carpet entrance. Cover the party table in pink accented with streamers, balloons and confetti. Create a throne for your princess to sit in when it's time for punch and cake. If your really ambitious you can create a castle out of some large boxes for a special play area just for the party.

3. ACTIVITIES: Sometimes the memories are even more special when guests get to take home the artwork that they've created themselves at the party. Whether they make tiaras, crowns, paintings or sugar cube castles, it will be something special that helps them remember and share their event with others. Make bracelets, build cookie castles, decorate princess hats, crowns, and wands, have a royal salon, etc!

4. GAMES: What princess party is complete without some royal games and events? Games like kiss the frog, pin the wings on the dragon, pass the poison apple, find the glass slipper or a musical princess walk, add excitement to the party and provide a time for everyone to interact.

5. FOOD: Don't forget snacks and drinks for all of your royal guests. Certainly snacks and drinks that are colored in princess pink are always top of the list. But sometimes it's best to incorporate some healthy vegetable snacks while providing a pink colored dip. Although any royal cake will do, a castle cake is popular with those who like to bake. For those who prefer a simple and less complicated treat, individual cupcakes and ice cream in individual cupcake liners can reduce the mess of serving princess treats under pressure.

[ TROPICAL LUAU BIRTHDAY PARTY ] ::
1. INVITATIONS: Luau party invitations can be a beach in bottle, airline tickets to paradise or just a beautiful luau designed card. Just be sure to make them really special by using a fancy by incorporating the tropical paradise theme. Be sure to give the start time, end time, date and location of the Hawaiian Tropical Luau.

2. DECORATIONS: Set the mood for your party with great decorations like a flower lei archway and play some fun Hawaiian hula music. Cover the party table accented with streamers, balloons and confetti. Create a beautiful luau setting for your guests when it's time for the punch and cake. If your really ambitious you can create a outdoor tiki hut just for the party.

3. ACTIVITIES: Make grass skirts, do sand art in a bottle, make flower leis, learn the hula, or make paper flowers. If you have a pool, swimming would be a great idea.

4. GAMES: Games like limbo, pin the wings on the butterfly, pineapple bowling or a goofy dress up relay, add excitement to the party and provide a time for everyone to interact.

5. FOOD: Don't forget the snacks and drinks for all of your luau guests. Snacks and drinks that are fruity and tropical looking are always top of the list. But sometimes it's fun to have a luau barbecue. The cake should have a fun, tropical theme.

suggestions needed to put in simple drop leaf breakfast bar?

kitchen benches with tables on New Orleans House - Decorating with Neutral Colors - Country Living

cal_blam

I need to install a small drop leaf breakfast bar, I only have basic hand tools and electric drills, sanders etc. I am hoping to find a simple plan I can use (or adapt a plan from a bench/table). Not fussed about fancy routed joints.
I was going to drill a wooden strip into the wall with some nice stainless brackets and then attach the drop leaf to that. Then varnish to match the kitchen benchtop.
Anyone know of anywhere I could find a free plan/DIY guide to doing this?
Also are there some special drop leaf hinges that i can use on the underside that would save making special joints etc? I think I have seen something on a caravan hardware website that may be useful but don't know where to find these retail. I am in Melbourne Australia so local knowledge most appreciated. Cheers, Cal.

Answer
I don't know about a DIY plan, but IKEA sells tabletops that are made for drop leaf designs - and they are really cheap. I mean, $60, all finished cheap. They look really nice too.

What kind of 14th century kitchen would a peasant have?

Audra

If you lived back then, what would the kitchen look like and where would you keep all of the food? Would there have been an oven or stove [obviously not modern] or something like it? Just curious!

Answer
One point about medieval life that is often overlooked is that not all peasants were the same. Some were much better off than others, and owned more land, and could afford a better lifestyle. in 'Life in a Medieval Village' Frances and Joseph Gies write:

'All the village houses belonged to the basic type of medieval building, the "hall" as did the manor house, the barns, and even the church, a single high-ceilinged room, varying in size depending on the number of bays or framed sections. In peasant houses, bays were usually about fifteen feet square.

The house of a rich villager might consist of four or even five bays, with entriy in the middle of a long side. small service rooms were probably partitioned off at one end: a buttery, where drink was kept, and a pantry, for bread, dishes, and utensils, with a passage between leading to a kitchen outside. A large hall might retain the ancient central hearth, or be heated by a fireplace with a chimney fitted into the wall.

A middle-level peasant probably lived in a three-bay house, the commonest type. A cotter (peasants without land) might have a small one-or-two-bay house. Dwellings commonly still lodged animals as well as human beings, but the byre was more often partititioned off and sometimes positioned at right angles to the living quarters.

Interiors were lighted bya few windows, shuttered but unglazed, and by doors, often open during the daytime, through which children and animals wandered freely. Floors were of beaten earth covered with straw or rushes. In the centre a fire of wood or of peat burned on a stone heearth, vented through a hole in the roof. Some hearths were crowned by hoods or funnels to channel the smoke to the makeshift chimney, which might be capped by a barrel with its ends knocked out. The atmosphere of the house was perpetually smoky from the fire burning all day as water, milk, or porridge simmered on pots on trivets or in footed brass or iron kettles. At night a fire-cover, a large round ceramic lid with holes, could be put over the blaze.

The family ate seated on benches or stools at a trestle table, disasembled at night. Chairs were rarities. A c upboard or hutch held wooden and earthenware bowls, jugs, and wooden spoons. Hams, bags and baskets hung from the rafters, away from rats and mice. Clothing, bedding, towels and table linen were stored in chests. A well-t-do peasant might own silver spoons, brass pots, and pewter dishes.

The peasant's basic need was subsistence, which meant food and drink produced from grain. The main necessities of life were bread, pottage or porridge, and ale. Most peasant bread was made from 'maslin' a mixture of wheat and rye or barley and rye, baked into a coarse dark loaf, consumed in great quantities by men, women and children.

For the poorer peasant families, pottage was favored over bread as more economical, since it required no milling and therefore escaped both the miller's exaction and the naturla loss of quality in the process. Peas and beans supplied protein and amino acids to both pottage and bread. A little fat bacon or salt pork might be added to the pottage along with onions and garlic from the garden. In spring and summer a variety of vegetables ws available, and some crofts grew fruit trees. Nuts, berries and roots were gathered in the woods.

A middling family probably owned a cow or two or three ewes, to provide a supply of milk, cheese, and butter. Most households kept chickens and pigs to furnish eggs and occasional meat. Slated and dried fish were available for a price, as were eels, which also might be fished for.

The Equali

Given the outrage I hear from Conservatives over the Obamas eating lobster, I'm just wondering if Cons think that they're the first First Family to ever dine on lobster. How outrageous of them!

I mean, surely the US President & First Lady aren't worthy of eating lobster!

Do you feel they should be put in their place? You think they should be eating table scraps, like your Conservative ancestors gave to their slaves?

Also, Conservatives seem to think that Barack Obama was the first President ever to eat Dijon mustard, speak to school children, play golf, take a vacation to Camp David, appoint Czars, stay at a nice hotel, go on a diplomatic trip to India, and various other things the Cons were outraged about.

And since Cons will try to claim that they never heard of this story, here are all the questions from Cons complaining about Michelle Obama eating lobster: http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result;_ylt=ApAE8HCMJnuseMCTvrLjDZTty6IX;_ylv=3?p=obama+lobster&submit-go=Search+Y!+Answers

But most importantly, the story, which originally appeared on right-wing websites - was proven false: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/roomservice.asp

What is the difference between a standard DVD or CD and a Blue Ray?

La_Liona

Answer
Camp Blu-ray

Backed by: Sony, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic), Mitsubishi Electric, Philips Electronics, Pioneer Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, TDK, and Thomson Multimedia.

Fight song: "We're better, you know it."

Advantages: Getting the early start, Blu-ray has enjoyed more mindshare than HD-DVD, as well as a conglomerate of powerful backers that rivals President Bush's "coalition of the willing" in size and scope. Technologically, the biggest edge Blu-ray appears to have over HD-DVD is that it offers 30 percent more capacity and is designed for recording high-def video. Rewritable BD-RW discs, with similar features to Panasonic's current DVD-RAM discs, can play back content while recording to the disc at the same time. Also, Sony owns Columbia Pictures and recently bought MGM, which gives it a leg up on releasing content. And PlayStation 3 certainly will carry a huge chunk of clout in the marketplace.

Disadvantages: Real or not, the biggest knock against Blu-ray is that the discs--initially, at least--will be more costly to produce than HD-DVD media (Sony claims otherwise). Until recently, the other knock was that unlike DVD-HD, the Blu-ray spec did not include support for more advanced video compression codecs such as MPEG-4 AVC and Microsoft's VC-1, in addition to the MPEG-2 codec. But the Blu-ray Group recently announced support for those codecs, so they're now on even ground on that front.

HD-DVD posse

Backed by: Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, and Memory-Tech. Microsoft is also supporting HD-DVD in its next version of Windows (support for Blu-ray is on the table).

Fight song: "We're evolutionary, not revolutionary."

Advantages: The name itself, HD-DVD, is far more consumer-friendly than Blu-ray. HD-DVDs carry the same basic structure as current DVDs, so converting existing DVD manufacturing lines into HD-DVD lines is supposedly simple and cost effective. Memory-Tech, a leading Japanese manufacturer of optical media, stated that producing HD-DVD discs would initially cost only 10 percent more than for existing DVDs and that it could quickly bring the cost down to match that of standard DVD.

Disadvantages: HD-DVD simply can't boast the same storage capacity as Blu-ray. It's confusing, but it appears that the rewritable HD-DVD-RW will go up 32GB, while the recordable HD DVD-R discs will only be single layer (15GB). The other downside is that with Sony holding the rights to Columbia Pictures and MGM movie and television libraries, there will probably be a hole in HD-DVD's content offering--don't expect to see MGM/UA's James Bond movies on HD-DVD, for example.

Outlook: Too close to call
Blu-ray had the early lead, but HD-DVD has been making inroads, garnering support from major studios Warner, Paramount, Universal, and New Line Cinema, who've decided to play it safe and back both formats. From a marketing standpoint, HD-DVD appears to be positioning itself as the more practical high-def DVD solution, an extension of the format rather than a leap beyond it. The Blu-ray group, for better or worse, is taking the bait and campaigning on technological superiority. Unfortunately, as a result, the press has jumped on the whole VHS vs. Betamax analogy--you know, the old "the best technology doesn't always win" story, which doesn't help Sony.

Personally, I think a better analogy is the whole SACD vs. DVD-Audio fiasco--you know, the war that no one seems to care about and no one's winning. In other words, Vince, hold onto your DVD collection; you have time. There are all kinds of copy-protection details to iron out, lots of politics, and some prices that need to drop a zero (people are just starting to buy DVD recorders, for crying out loud). Me, I'm ballparking the end of 2006 before anything interesting really starts to happen in the high-def disc arena. Until then, put in a well-transferred DVD and sit a little farther back from your TV. It all looks like HD from the other side of the room.

At what track will Penske get their first win in Nascar cup?

Heather

And which driver will it be too please of the Penske team who wins first!

Answer
This is going to be a little out there, but bear with me.

I would have said this season. Penske will be at a disadvantage with being the only supported DODGE team. The plus side I immediately saw was that there would be a Penske car at every single tire test, because they are the only DODGE team. So whether it be Keselowski, Busch, or Hornish, Penske would always get a full set of tire test data. But then, Jack Roush had to complain about Penske getting an advantage by having a car at every test. That really has grown my distaste for Jack Roush by a great deal. Penske will be at a disadvantage because there are so few DODGE teams. The only silver lining for Penske is the tire test perk, which I doubt will not be as help-full as having 7 full-time DODGE teams on track. If Goodyear brings the tire test down to any three random teams no matter which manufacturer, I expect Penske to struggle, essentially at the hand of Jack Roush. However, if the tire test rules remain the same as they are currently, I think Penske has the depth to keep pace with last year. I'm not sure they can achieve much better though.

Jayski.com news, January 29th, 2009:
"NASCAR talks to teams about Talladega and tire tests: NASCAR officials met with team principals on Tuesday to discuss upcoming initiative for the new season. One subject discussed was the possibility of a one-day test at Talladega before the Charlotte open test on March 23-24. Sprint Cup Series director John Darby confirmed that NASCAR is looking for a date. The one-day session at the superspeedway will help determine which restrictor plate will be used at the track and will allow teams to use spoilers instead of a rear wing. Other topics on the table included moving the fuel hole forward on the cars to accommodate the spoiler and shrinking the number of Goodyear test participants to three teams per test once again. Roush Fenway Racing crashed the three-car testing policy in Darlington in 2007 during the Car of Tomorrow rollout, prompting Goodyear to change their rules and invite representatives from each manufacturer. Now with Penske Racing providing the only Dodges in the garage, the sentiment from the competition is that the team's camp would have an unfair advantage.(Fox Sports)(1-29-2010)"

So, I'm going to say, the testing change happens, leaving only three random teams at each test. And with that going through, I predict no wins for Penske this year. After this year, I think Hornish will leave, letting Justin Alligator (lol) take the rains of the 77. After getting no wins next year, I predict Keselowski will replace Mark Martin in the #5 for 2012. Leaving just Kurt and Justin. After another unsuccessful season, Justin will leave for MWR for 2013 and Kurt will head for RCR. That will leave Roger with no choice but to bring Parker Kligerman up to Sprint Cup in the #2, and shutting the #77 down. 2013 will also bring a change in manufacturer as the team moves into the Toyota camp. 2013 will be a learning year for Kligerman, as he competes for rookie of the year, and fails. 2014 will start out with Roger adding a second team, with Jake Blankenship running a full schedule in the #12. The team will improve the entire year, but a late summer win at Iowa Speedway will be Roger Penske's next Cup Series win. Kligerman will narrowly miss the chase that year, as Jake wins rookie of the year honors, meaning the team will be on the rise going into 2015.

That was long, my goodness.

Bordering a lakeshore and under the shade of pines and hardwoods, Badin Lake Campground offers a year-round retreat for swimmers, boaters, and anglers. The campground has 34 non-electric sites for tent and trailer camping. Some sites are located on the lakeshore. Each site has a table, grill, lantern post, fire ring, and tent pad. There are 4 water spigots for drinking water located in the campground. Flush toilets and showers are located in both the upper and lower loops. Fee stations are located at the entrance of both loops.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

Q. I bought an Ikea kitchen bench and I would like to make a cushion for it. I have a vague idea how to do it - and the supplies I'll need, but I think I should have some step by step instructions just in case.

Is it as simple as plywood, spray adhesive, foam, and fabric??

Answer
You seem to be on the right track. You did not say if the top if the bench is finished. I am assuming that it is not.

You can adhere the foam to the plywood, but it is not necessary as the fabric will hold the foam into place.

1. Place fabric face down on a clean surface.
2. Place a layer of polyester batting down on the fabric.
3. Place foam cushion top of the batting.
4. Place the plywood over the foam.
5. Smooth the batting over the foam and plywood. Staple one side of the batting, Mitre the corners of the foam so that it is not bulky. (You may need to trim some of the batting. Staple the opposite side, then finish the remaining sides.
6. I like to sew the corners of the fabric for a finished edge, but you can carefully fold the corners of the fabric, (like a gift) and staple the fabric in the same manner as the batting.

You can then screw the bench to the bottom of the plywood.

YOU ARE DONE!

If the cushion in loose, the easiest way to do this is to sew the fabric on three sides and 1/3 of the way on each end of the remaining side. (Making a pillow case type cover.) Then turn the cover inside out. Take each corner and form a triangle from the flattened sides of the corners. Sew a seam on each corner the depth of the cushion. This gives a nice finished look. Turn inside - out. Then stuff cover with pillow and then hand sew the remaining portion of the seam.

What is the best digital piano or keyboard for me?

B-)AM

I just found out I have been accepted to boarding school, and I would like to continue to play piano (I have been playing for about eight years). I need a keyboard or digital piano that will fit well in a dorm room. It needs to have pedals, weighted keys, authentic sound and be under $1000. What type would be the best? (It doesn't have to have a lot of fancy features, just do what a normal piano can do)

Answer
If you give up the weighted key option, and go for synth action, then take a look at the M-Audio 88. My husband has a gorgeous Steinway downstairs, but for the classical music weddings and other such gigs we play (certainly not concerts! Those have to be a really fine grand!) then we take this. It has two pedals (sustain and sostenuto!), weighs 17 pounds, and has decent piano sounds - not all the outer-space stuff you do not need. You can listen with headphones, or run it thru an amp. Please get a good stand - one with four good legs, not an X stand. Musicians Friend has one for around $85 that folds to a letter L, but opens into two Ys connected with a bar - very stable, and you can even put a shett of wood on it to make a table for extra guests. I bought one for my school - adjustable in almost every parameter, can hold a big mixer, etc. Aldo get an adjustable bench - you can get a 4-leg crankup (artist) bench for less than $100 - same place. Again, beats the X-leg bench. If you do not like the pedal that comes with it ( small, square, if I remember - we have a tons of extra things here) then get traditionally-shaped pedals. Place a conventional GOOD folding music stand in front, and get good lighting that clips on. You will be all set!

We own 5 electric keyboards and a fine Steinway squaretail A - and of course they cannot be compared - but for what they are,a decent electric keyboard beats a crappy acoustic piano.

Newly engaged and planning to have the wedding in 11 months. How do I plan?

Stacie!

I'm not at all sure where to begin.

What should the agenda be as far as month to month planning for this wedding? I have no idea when appropriate times to plan certain things are. HELP!

Answer
I remember being in the same situation. I knew nothing about planning a wedding and I had no one to help me. The good thing is that you have plenty of time. I planned mine in less than 4 months. Here is how I planned (and still planning) mine:

1) Come up with a realistic budget with your fiance. What can you afford? Also come up with a tentative guest list for quoting purposes.

2) Decide what type of wedding you want to have. Do you want to have your ceremony in a church and then the reception at a hotel banquet room? Do you want to have your wedding at a house?

3) Research available venues. I wanted a beach wedding so I googled "beach wedding venues in the bay area" and came up with a ton of information.

4) Check date availability and get quotes. Prices vary greatly from place to place. I found a place that wanted to charge $80+ a head and the place I booked is much nicer and only charges $45 a head.

5) Make an appointment to meet with the wedding coordinator to look at the place. If you like it an can afford it, make a deposit to hold your date.

6) Research and get quotes from photographers

7) Research DJ's or band in your area and pay a deposit to book their services. I found a company that offered a showcase so I got to see what they were about before I booked. Companies are better than booking individuals because they have backups if the DJ gets sick or can't make it for any reason.

8) Get an idea of what you want your colors, flowers, or themes to be. Print pictures of flowers / bouquets off the Internet and show them to florists. Get quotes and book your florist.

9) Look at wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses, and print pictures of ones you like. Make an appointment at your local bridal shop (give yourself at east 4 months or more). The dresses usually take up to 16 weeks to be tailored and sent to the bridal shop. I chose my bridesmaids dresses the same day and at the same shop I got my wedding dress from.

10) Book your officiant / pastor / rabbi. If the one you had in mind is busy on your wedding day then ask him or her for a referral. I got my officiant through a referral and she seems really nice.

11) See if your hairstylist can do your hair /and or make-up the day of your wedding. If she or he cannot travel to where you will be married then look around for local salons and get trial hair and make-up to be sure you will like what they can do for you.

12) Look for bakeries that do wedding cakes and choose what type of cake you want and how you want it to look. Book their services for your date.

13) 3 months before you wedding (no earlier than that or it will expire) obtain your marriage license permit in the county you will be married in. You might have to go down to the clerks office with your fiance and show your ID's and make a payment. Call or search the county recorders office in the county you will be married, and ask what they need from you. Also ask your officiant if all they need is the permit. Our officiant is going to take care of the documents after the wedding, we just need to give her the permit.

14) Search and purchase your wedding favors and wedding party gifts. Look into table numbers and seating assignment charts if you will be assigning seating.

15) Make sure your fiance makes an appointment at a tux shop with his wedding party to pick out their attire. This can be a few months before the wedding.

Note: When selecting your vendors, make sure you tell them you are on a budget (if so) and they will almost always go down in price. Our photographer gave us $500 off his regular fee and I had one guy go down half his price when he found out I was choosing another vendor who was cheaper.

I'm sure I left some things out. Just look up a wedding check list and check the items off as you go. Happy planning!

how do i plan a wedding?

Marie

I'm newly engaged and i want to start planning my wedding. but the thing is a have no idea where to start. anyone have any ideas as to how to get started? what to do? anything? i'm in over my head here. anything would help. thanks.

Answer
Congrats!

First of all, talk with your fiance about setting a date and figure out what your budget will be for your wedding and reception and who will be footing the bill. Depending on who is paying, your parents and/or your fiance's parents may want to add to the guest list. If they're paying, the etiquette is that they can invite whomever they want to invite. If you and your fiance are paying then it's totally your decision who is invited. Once you know who is paying, you'll have a good idea of the budget and what venue and vendors you can afford.

Many popular venues require a year to reserve in advance.

I made my own wedding planning book using a binder and printed a phto of us for the cover sleeve, the word "Our Wedding Day" and our wedding date. Inside had tabs for venues, caterer, flowers, photographer, DJ, centerpieces, favors, attire, jewelry etc. I kept their contact information and any detailed information that I needed as well as pictures.

In the back, I kept folders for all contracts and receipts. It's very important that your KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS. I used a wedding planning checklist from the back of a magazine and kept it in my binder crossing off items as they were done. You can also find such check lists on theknot.com Just make sure you do everything on your list.

I kept a small notebook dedicated to the wedding to take notes whenever I needed to do that. Keep a list of any items you order online and their expected arrival date.

Give and all the necessary people such as vendors your phone number and email address so they can get back to you and keep in touch.

I also made an Excel spreadsheet of our budget to keep track of all expenses and to compare between packages at 3 different venues.

Be sure to order your gown at least 7-6 months in advance. Here's a good bridal gown guide: http://www.shopwiki.com/wiki/Wedding+Gow... and send out your invitations 6 weeks before the wedding. Theweddingtracker.com is a great tool also for your wedding website and keeping track of R.S.V.Ps. You can also set up your table seating there. After the R.S.V.P. deadline, split up your "nonresponses" with your bridesmaids, groom, mom, etc. and start calling to verify attendance.

Give your groom a TO DO list. A good TO Do list for the groom will include:

- Making sure the groomsmen have purchased/rented their suits and accessories in time.
- The groom is also responsible for purchasing his groomsmen's gifts.
- Another thing on this list a groom can do is to coordinate with a friend to look after your home while the two of you or away.
-Purchasing wedding insurance.
- Planning the honeymoon!

The day of our wedding we had a day of coordinator to keep things running smoothly that day. If you're planning your own wedding, that's the time to relenquish some control so that you can enjoy the day. It goes by soooo fast.
--------------------------------------...
BUDGET PLANNING

You can have a BEAUTIFUL wedding on a budget and no one would be the wiser.

GUEST LIST: This can be you biggest saver. Keeping your guest list small will cut your expenses immeasurably. Make a list for your side of the family and have your fiance make one too. Once you have an idea of the total number, you'll know how large of a space you'll need.

My second tip is DIY, DIY, DIY! There are so many items that you can diy for your wedding if you have time and it becomes so personalized. You can get your wedding party to help you too. You can create save-the-dates, invitations, aisle runner, guestbook, bouquet, boutineers, ring bearer pillow, pew markers, programs, menus, escort cards, table numbers, simple centerpieces, favors, etc. Check out theknot.com for ideas or google "DIY wedding."

CEREMONY: Low-cost places
the beach
public park (call and ask about any fees)
firestation hall
local swim club
local church

RECEPTION: Venue costs can vary. Our banquet room was $700 to rent. I've read of others being $1400 - $4,000. Costs can also depend upon the day your reception is held. Saturday evening receptions are usually more expensive than daytime Saturday, Friday, Sunday, or any other day during the week.

Low-cost places for reception:
- Community center
- Lodge
- College center
- American Legion Hall (I went to the one here for a dance recently and was shocked to discover how big it was and with an all hardwood floor perfect for dancing.)
- Church reception room or fellowship hall (may not allow dancing)

CATERER: The cost of a caterer can vary. My venue offered catering for about $65 per person for a dinner buffet and an open bar. That was excellent. Some can be more expensive. Some can even be cheaper. Some venues will allow you to bring your own alcohol and this can reduce your cost. Tip: One friend of mine negotiated getting charged per drink instead of per person per hour for her alcoholic beverages. That also helped with the cost. Another option for drinks is to do just wine and beer or don't serve alcohol at all. I don't recommend a cash bar because that's considered tacky. They are your guests, so you don't want them paying for anything.

If you want to go the inexpensive route for food, you can have a brunch or lunch instead of dinner. Sit down meals can be more expensive than buffets or food stations. I prefer buffets/food stations because they are usually less expensive, the food is hot, and I like choices. Sometimes when a waiter brings you a meal at a sit-down, the meal can be cold. Tip: Another option is to just serve cocktails and appetizers around 6pm if that's what you can afford or you can just serve cake and punch around 3:00pm.

You could try a restaurant for the reception. However, some restaurants can be just as costly as other venues.

Alternatively, you can have a pot-luck reception for a casual informal wedding. Everyone will love displaying their best dish. You would just coordinate who's bringing what so that you don't have duplications.

CAKE: Research and book a bakery or cake baker after attending a cake tasting. You can have a groom's cake if you want, but it isn't necessary. Some couples use Publix, Walmart, or Sam's Club for low cost wedding cakes. Tip: Some couples use a dummy layer in their cake to look good for photos and have a sheet cake in the back to serve. You can have a baker make a simple frosted cake for you and purchase parchment flowers, sugar paste flowers and/or shells, fresh flowers, or silk flowers, and decorate the cake simply yourself. Most of the cost is in the decorating.

FLOWERS: Buy flowers wholesale at a website like http://www.fiftyflowers.com to save money. They were mentioned in a recent theknot.com article.

GIFTS, DECORATIONS, FAVORS: Check for coupons before you purchase at sites like retailmenot.com BTW, favors are not necessary. Check http://www.efavormart.com for inexpensive table overlays and chair tiebacks that are cheaper than the cost of rentals.

You can create simple candle centerpieces by purchasing candles in bulk and glass containers at Michael's or other craft store's like that. Also check out this website: http://www.giftsforonegiftsforall.com... for inexpensive candelabras.

PHOTOGRAPHER: If you hire someone just starting out that person may just want more experience, and can give you a great deal.

Check out their portfolio first before you hire.

WEDDING PLANNER: Tip: If you hire an event planning student, that person may just want the experience as well.

WEDDING GOWN: Check David's Bridal for their frequent $99 gown sales or other savings. Check with designers for their trunk shows, go to a Filene's Basement Running of the Brides. You can order wedding gowns online, but be careful where you purchase it. You want to make sure that the quality is good.

BRIDESMAIDS: Yes, in the U.S. it is customary for bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses, shoes, hair, nails and makeup. A bride can pay for these or assist them if she can afford it. Check David's Bridal, ebay, or newportnews.com for dresses.

GROOMSMEN: It is also customary for groomsmen to rent their own tuxes and purchase their own shoes. TIP: if the men all have black suits, this can be a great saver for them. If it's a casual outdoor wedding, they can wear tan or khaki pants as well and guayabera shirts.

http://guayaberashirt.com

http://www.theguayaberashirtstore.com/.....

FLOWERGIRLS: Check Burlington Coat Factory for inexpensive dresses especially now after Easter. You can find many cute "Easter" dresses than can be used as flower girl dresses.

details of a carribean theme for my wedding in kent please anybody know of co ordinators for themmed weddings ?

Answer
â»Garden Themed Wedding
You have two options here. Either you choose a public or a private garden to host your wedding reception or decorate any venue on a garden theme. Whichever you choose, add nature elements to your invitations and decor. Use potted plants, topiaries, arches, benches and fountains. Make little pathways leading to different areas of the reception. Wrought iron chairs, tables, gates, lamp posts, birdbaths and picket fences etc. will complete the picture. Summer Wedding Flowers will complement the decor. Include dishes made of fresh seasonal produce in the menu and choose a garden themed wedding cake like a tiered cake with the base of a fountain or cakes decorated with fresh flowers or berries. Potted plants or other natural products can be given as favors.
â»Beach Themed Wedding
Choose a public or a private beach for the wedding venue and get necessary permissions for using it for your wedding. Let your theme reflect on your invitations and stationery by adding sea elements and decorations on them. Decorations aren't going to cost a fortune as the beach itself will provide the setting. You can add special touches by using seashells in the table settings and centerpieces etc. Choose a beach-themed wedding cake to add to the theme. Add seafood to the menu and include some sea products as wedding favors.
â»Mid-Summer Wedding Theme
For this theme combining nature and old-world charm, choose an outdoor venue and have the ceremony under a flower-covered altar. Choose mid-summer motifs such as butterflies, vines or even fairies for your stationery. Use the brightest summer blooms for flowers for decorations and bouquets. Brides can use fresh flowers in their hair instead of other accessories. A summer-themed cake using fresh flowers or fruits, a light menu with lots of fresh fruits and cool drinks or ice-cream will complement the theme perfectly.
â»Victorian Wedding Theme
An old mansion or inn or even a garden is the perfect location for a Victorian themed wedding. Go in for formal invitations with engravings, scrolls or even sonnets added to it. Think antique and classic for the decor - delicate teacups, magnificent chandeliers etc. Old-fashioned roses for the bride's bouquet and other floral decorations will add to the whole effect. Classic attires, elegant white tiered wedding cake, Victorian music and favors wrapped in tulle or antique lace handkerchiefs will lend perfection to the theme.

Best wishes. <*-*>

How do you fix sagging boobs without surgery?

me

I'm 21. I have 3 kids. I have recently lost 30lbs and now I notice my boobs are a bit saggy. I am to young for my boobs to sag. I know exercise can help, but to what extent? Does it really lift them a noticable amount? and if so, what exercises?

Answer
WHAT YOU CAN DO

Other than visiting a plastic surgeon, the only thing that you can do to prevent your breasts from sagging (or firm up already slack breasts) is to build up the pectoral muscles under your breasts and fill the sag with muscle, says Dr. Price.

Here's how to give your breasts a lift.

Try the fly. "To build more muscle, try what's called the dumbbell fly, using a pair of one- to three-pound weights," says Peggy Norwood-Keating, director of fitness at Duke University Diet and Fitness Center in Durham, North Carolina.

To start, pick up one weight in each hand, then lie back on the floor. Extend your arms out at shoulder level on the floor with your palms up, clutching your weights. The weights should be parallel to your body.

Draw both arms straight up together above your body, keeping your elbows slightly bent, so that the weights meet over your chest, says Norwood-Keating. Then, return the weights out to your sides at shoulder height, as if you were drawing a semicircle or half-moon over your body.

Repeat the exercise 12 to 15 times, then rest for 1½ minutes, says Norwood-Keating. Repeat the exercise a second time and rest once again. Then repeat the exercise for a third and final set.

The stronger you become, the more weight you'll be able to handle. This means that you should be able to gradually increase your weight (by one to two pounds) while decreasing repetitions (8 to 10) in order to work your muscles gradually, says Norwood-Keating. Your goal here is 8 to 10 repetitions in three sets.

Try a chest press. A variation on the fly that also builds chest muscle is the chest press, says Norwood-Keating. This time, pick up a five-pound dumbbell in each hand and lie back on the floor. Extend your arms and hold the dumbbells up in the air over your chest, parallel to your body. Then, bend your elbows and lower the dumbbells toward your chest, with your elbows out to the sides at shoulder level. Extend your arms straight back up over your chest and repeat the exercise 12 to 15 times. Rest for 1½ minutes, then do a second set of 12 to 15 repetitions. Rest again and do a third set.

As with the previous exercise, if doing this exercise as described gets easy, increase your weights by one or two pounds. Your goal, says Norwood-Keating, is the same as above: 8 to 10 repetitions in three sets with as much weight as you can safely and comfortably handle.

Round out your workout. All these exercises may be great for your chest, but you need to round out your workout with an exercise that strengthens your back muscles, says Norwood-Keating. Otherwise, you're likely to become round-shouldered and weaken your back. So pick up a five- to ten-pound weight in your left hand, then lean on a bench or a low, sturdy table by placing your right knee and right hand down on its surface. Your left foot should be on the floor.

Bend your left elbow, bring the weight up to your armpit and try to squeeze your left shoulder blade toward your spine. As you resist gravity, slowly lower the weight back down until your arm is fully extended. It won't be easy, but resist letting the weight fall by squeezing with your left shoulder blade as the weight returns to the starting positon, explains Norwood-Keating.

Repeat the exercise 12 to 15 times, rest for 1½ minutes, then do a second set of 12 to 15 repetitions. Rest again and do a third set.

Don't forget sunscreen. Since sun exposure can speed up the aging of the elastin fibers that keep your skin from sagging, make sure that you wear a sunscreen whenever you wear a sundress, tank top or bathing suit with a low neckline, says Dr. Price.

Many dermatologists recommend a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 15, she adds. Whatever you use, don't forget to reapply regularly.

Wear a bra. To prevent your breasts from sagging further, wear a bra. "It does help," says Petra Schneider, M.D., a plastic surgeon in private practice in Melbourne, Florida. "Wearing a bra puts less stress on your ligaments. The more you wear one during the day, the more it helps."

Wearing a bra is especially important if you jog, play tennis, do aerobics or participate in other forms of exercise that bounce your breasts. If you're a C cup or larger, look for sports bras with good support that control your breast movement, says Dr. Price. Some women find that nonelastic shoulder straps are best for minimizing movement. Sports bras are available in the lingerie department of some department stores or in sporting goods stores.

what are the (dis)advantages of a fixed dining table design (granite slab and two wooden bench) ?

I would like some suggestion on the dining table design
The design that I have in mind is a fixed concrete/granite slab with a support on either sides or one side
connecting to the wall with covered wooden benches (top side cushion) and shelves with door on the easily accessible side.

What, if any, are the problems with the concrete slab table design ?

Answer
Fixed dining table design is great as long as you don't have any plan to do renovation works in the area where you placed your dining table.

Will Sur dining table work with my other furniture?

jessc

I am thinking of getting the Big Sur table and benches from Crate and Barrel. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=891&f=14069&q=sur&fromLocation=Search&DIMID=400001&SearchPage=1

But my other furniture are sort of Ballard Design style. Samples :
Armoire in black -- http://www.ballarddesigns.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1025&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C5%2C36%2C200&iProductID=1025

Console table (also in black) -- http://www.ballarddesigns.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1746&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=demilune

My couches are similar in color to the link below, although style is a little more relaxed -- http://www.scandinaviandesigns.com/?page=shop/flypage&page_back=shop/category_items&offset=0&product_id=1572&category_id=a10b5d1d7c7745585411b442dc5aa934

Main artwork has dark traditional frame.

Is there any way to make this work?

Answer
I'm not liking the white oak table with all the black pieces you have noted. I would choose a warmer wood color and then it would blend. The style of the table would work, just not the light color. Then the dark leather chairs would pull it together nicely with the rest of the look. Good choices though.

Anyone got any good pranks I can use when camping?

camping table the range on Adjustable camping table 52x37
camping table the range image

Hi,

My brother and I go camping each year with my brother in law and some of his mates and this year I thought it would be a laugh to play some pranks on them. It is not your normal camping site as my brother in law's family own forest, and we basically go back to basics (no phones, showers, toilets etc) and we will only be the only ones there so the pranks can be quite extreme.

Has any one got any good suggestions, big or small?

Thanks

Answer
1) If it's a guy you are pranking, some bright pink pail polish will definitely boost their self esteem. Wait until they are asleep.

2) Smear shaving cream on someone's hand when they are asleep, then tickle their face.

3) Take a water bottle, unscrew it so that it leaks a little bit of water, and set it in their sleeping bag.

4) If you don't want to waste an entire water bottle on someone, you can simply poke a hole in the top of a water bottle so that it squirts a stream of water when you squeeze it. Then simply squirt a person when you are all sitting around a table. With luck, they won't notice that they are getting wet.

5) If they go to sleep before the rest of the group, you can quietly pull all of the poles out of the tent. It will be very disorienting when they wake up to go to the rest room.

6) Got zip-ties? Take one and zip-tie their tent zippers together. Then they have to beg someone for a knife so they can get out.

7) Are you doing a hike during your campout? Then don't forget to pack your friend's backpack with rocks to give them a little challenge.

8) This prank needs someone who is a little paranoid for it to work. If they have long hair, then keep telling them (before the campout) that they really need to get their haircut, or you just might do it yourself. If you keep reminding them about it, they will be so paranoid that they won't sleep for the entire campout. This works many other ways as well.

1) For this one, you are going to need some portable hair clippers, preferably ones that are quiet. You have to wait until they are soundly asleep, or else they will wake up. At this point, you can shave off any hair that you want. Their eyebrows, their hair, anything.

2) Do you have an iPod with really loud metal music? Wait until they are asleep, place the headphones on their ears, then turn it up as loud as you can. Videotape their reaction.

3) If your entire group wakes up early, ditch the remaining person in camp. If you drove there, move the cars down the road. Make sure to do it quietly so that they don't wake up. Reactions will vary.

4) Bring some dog food next time you go camping, and stick it in some food. Dog food has the ability of being able to look like many different types of food, ranging from beef chunks to chocolate chip bits. Your imagination is the limit.

5) Get some parachute cord and tie their sleeping bag shut. If they are claustrophobic, don't do this, they may destroy their sleeping bag, their tent, then you.

How would I find everything I need to travel from USA to Venice, Italy?

Macccccccc

I am under 18 but am planning on going to Venice as soon as I graduate. I would like everything you can tell me on what I need and how to put it all together. Sight seeing, flights, hotels, ect. Any help will be really appreciated.

Answer
It depends a lot on the kind of places you stay and exactly where and when you visit. In general, you can get by for around $100 per person per day if you stay in hostels and watch your budget. Hotels will cost more. I generally spend 100-150 euro a night just for hotels when I go out exploring. Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip (expect prices in the future to rise):

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point. Tuscany is an entire region, not a town. The most convenient airports to fly into will be Pisa or Florence, but Rome or Bologna are also reasonable options.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around. this one may be more useful for you. Palermo is a long trip by train, Naples to Palermo is one leg of the trip where you might consider flying.

http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.htm⦠- train schedules and prices. The trains are a great way to get around here. You need to be aware that even with a railpass, many high speed, international and night trains require reservations and you will have to pay an additional supplement for the reservation. In places like Spain or here in Italy, railpasses are rarely worth the money.
.
http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro for a meal, but you can eat for less. I was in Venice recently and paid 32 euro for lunch at Da Raffaele sitting at a canal side table with the gondolas passing by. Here in Italy, You can get a whole pizza for 8 to 13 euro or a pasta dish in the same range. Panini or pizza by the slice is less. For reference, a McDonalds McMenu classico (medium) is going for around 7.50 euro. While you can eat cheaply most of the time, I would recommend getting a good local meal from time to time; that's part of the overall experience that it would be a shame to miss. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants.

When is spring break in cancun 2012?

Alex

What is the best week to be in cancun for spring break for partying?

Answer
I worked at night clubs in Cancun for 6 years. Doing PR and Sales.

Spring break season was always the best by far! We used to wait all year for spring break.

LOTS of fun!

I am going to give you THE BEST tips you could get on that matter.

1. Cancun is one of the best party venues all year. However there are times when it gets busier. Spring break and summer break are the best seasons for that. You should get there on the first days of april.

2. Make sure you stay at a hotel by the "party center" so you can just walk to and from the night clubs. This is very important because you are going to be drunk.

3. Each nigh club owns 1 night of the week. You must make sure you are going to the correct night club each night of the week. People will try sell you tickets to other places because they are making commission, all of them. So make sure you find out which night club to go each night. You should ask somebody that doenst make a commission such as front desk people maybe. Enternainers at your hotel will promote a night club every day. Doing activities at the pool and giving away t-shirts and souvenirs from the night club. They will tell you to meet them at the lobby at night at a certain time to take you and the rest of the guests to that club.

It is a good idea to buy your tickets with the entertainers at your hotel because they will take you to the club, provide you with an area with service and reserved tables, etc. However, this guys are the ones that make the most commission when it comes to night clubs, they could make up to 20 dollars per open bar they sell to the guests. So they might be taking the people to the place that offers them more commission each night. So be careful.

4. Some tips for nights out to the best clubs each night are:
- Monday: Dady'O
- Tuesday: The City's beach club (Playa Cabana)
- Wednesday: Not sure, I think its Basic (thats the name of the place)
- Thursday: Senor Frogs (or Cocobongo, this place is always busy, so, you can go any day)
- Friday: The City Night Club
- Saturday: Bulldog
- Sunday: Cocobongo

5. I recomend you to take a look at Student City, STS, etc, those are student travel agencies and I think they take you to the best places every night.

I actually met my wife (we just got married) while I was working at a night club and she came for spring break. I approached her and invited, her sister and friend to come work with us in our pomo team. I just moved to Minnesota a couple months ago. Ironic huh?

I think you are good to go now.

I'll be happy to answer any of your questions. If you have any more :)

What are the best lake beaches in New Hampshire?

I love to swim in beautiful, fresh water lakes. What are your favorite beaches on fresh water lakes in New Hampshire? If you can tell me why it is a favorite, that would be great. I am interested in how crowded it is, whether there is any shady space to sit, whether there are picnic tables, how big the beach is, whether there are a lot of weeds, and how quickly it gets deep. If you know whether there is a charge, that would be great, too. Thanks!!
I also have a little wooden sailboat I like to bring so if you know anything about boating on that lake, let me know. Thank you!

Answer
My favorite lake is Mirror Lake in Woodstock, NH. It is fairly small and fairly clear. There are no weeds but some years there has been a fair amount of milfoil. It takes about 30 feet or so to get to six feet deep. I put a 8 foot by 12 foot raft (swim float) in every summer and my mother and one other person have donated picnic tables so there are a couple there. It is very popular with families and teenagers so it can get crowded on hot days.

Here are a coupl of pictures:

what is a food that represents the beach?

i need to come up with foods that represent the setting of my book for a project. i have to have the food, and why it represents the setting. my book takes place at the beach, in santa fe, nm, and at harvard. help!!

Answer
You can always be creative. The more creative your project, the more impressed your instructor will be. The instructor will immediately recongnize your gallant efforts to be the best!!

We have natural beaches, manmade beaches, etc. For white beaches, use table salt. To be creative and have a brown, tan, light brown or black beach add food color to your salt or rock salt. Hope this helps. or spray with food coloring (hair dye may help) but definitely food coloring.

Better yet, salt comes from the sea, lake, ocean, (water) etc . So that could probably help with your food as far as representing the setting.

How would you describe Cleveland to someone who's never been there?

flight777

I've never been there (other than the airport) and was looking for someone to briefly summarize what it's like and how it compares to other major cities. Thanks!

Answer
Cleveland is a highly cultured city with four distinct seasons of weather and its downtown is the heart of the 15th most populated combined statistical area in the U.S. Its compact downtown uniquely has MLB, NFL and NBA sports venues all within a 15-minute walk of each other. And about 15 minutes from downtown is University Circle, one of the nation's great cultural centers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_United_States_Combined_Statistical_Areas

University Circle is the home of Case Western Reserve University, tied for the rank of 38th best national university in the 2012 U.S. News and World Report ratings; the Cleveland Museum of Art, one of the nation's best and with still free admission to its general galleries; and Severance Hall, often deemed the nation's most beautiful concert hall and the home of the world-renown Cleveland Orchestra. Also in University Circle are the very highly respected Cleveland Institute of Art and Cleveland Institute of Music. Also in the circle district are the very good Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Botanical Garden, and Western Reserve Historical Society. The circle also is the home of two of the nation's leading medical centers -- the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals.

Playhouse Square downtown is the second largest theater complex in the U.S. after Lincoln Center. It features several restored and enhanced vaudeville theaters, as well as some of the most innovative theater spaces in the country.

Greater Cleveland has rail transit lines, primarily connecting the airport, downtown, University Circle and the suburb of Shaker Heights, and many bus routes.

Cleveland is an international port thanks to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Located on the city's North Harbor are the city's architectural icon -- the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the very good Great Lakes Science Center.

The West Side Market is one of the nation's best indoor public food markets, a magnet for Greater Clevelanders and tourists.

One hour west of Cleveland in Sandusky is Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world. Sandusky also is ferry port for the short ride to the Lake Erie islands. Cleveland has a downtown beach as well as beaches the east and west of the city. Marinas dot the Lake Erie shoreline.

In Cuyahoga Valley National Park, just over 30 minutes from downtown are both downhill skiing and Blossom Music Center, one of the nation's very best summer music venues. The region is dotted with beautiful Metroparks, or county parks. Most famous is the Cleveland Metroparks, known as the city's Emerald Necklace. With over 22,000 acres, it features everything from toboggan runs, ponds for skating and fishing, and a lakefront beach to golf courses, baseball diamonds, stellar picnic areas, bike and hiking and horse trails, as well as excellent nature preserves.

Few American metropolises have been blessed with forefathers who so well preserved their region's natural beauty.

Holden Arboretum, about one half hour east of the city, is one of the nation's largest and best with over 3,500 acres.

Cleveland is a recognized regional restaurant center, featuring locavore creations utilizing the region's agricultural bounty.

Cleveland has a very cosmopolitan population, stemming from its days as an ethnic melting pot. Its people are hard-working, friendly, and polite, reflecting their Midwestern attitudes. One characteristic of Cleveland is that you'll rarely hear a car horn, and its drivers generally yield to other motorists.

Clevelanders are passionate about their sports, especially football, yet rarely show the rudeness to opposition players and fans found in other cities. Like most of the rest of Ohio, they are great fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes, which typically feature Greater Clevelanders on their sports teams. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in nearby Canton, Ohio.

Greater Cleveland is an affordable region, with relatively low housing prices, partially reflecting its declining population.

Individuals who like high culture, nature and the joys of four seasons of weather, enjoy their Cleveland roots.

Is it expensive to do a mosaic in your home?

I don't have lots of money, I might be able to buy a house soon and I am a very creative and artsy person. I have always wanted to make my house a work of art, you can't do that when you rent. Anyways, does it cost a lot to do mosaic's? I want to do one for my kitchen backsplash and one for my bathroom. What would a good practice project be, I would like to try it out on something that isn't permanent first like a table or something.

Answer
Have a go at mosaic borders around a mirror (glued on to a piece of ply board) they are small project areas so not too frustrating; and working with smaller pieces fragments of tile, mirror, shell or stone are easier to create and theme with. Broken tile fragments from building sites are free (with permission of course) bits of broken coloured glass look fantastic especially the blues and greens and reds and especially if they have ribs or textures. Coloured marbles (the type kids play with) cut in half add depth and dimension - very inexpensive just to name a few ideas... your only limited by your imagination. I have done mirrors, lamp shades, and a kitchen back splash in ocean themes (live near a beach) they look fantastic. A great Idea.

How can I run my home like a daycare so I can teach my toddler developmental milestones?

heather

I'm a stay at home mom with a 4 month old and a 20 month old. I want to learn ways I can teach my toddler developmental milestones that he may miss since he isn't in daycare. Things like talking, learning shapes, putting away things, ect. Any advice or links to web pages would be appreciated.

Answer
Well, as you say, the milestones such as learning shapes - you show your child shapes as they come up in everyday life - "We'll use the round kitchen table for lunch today, see it is like a circle" or "Put your little cars in the shoe-box shaped like a rectangle" .

For colours you just do the same - make learning a game, don't just do the usual primary colours (red, yellow, blue) - teach your child Apricot, Tangerine, Turquoise - teach MORE than they would learn in pre-school (which incidentally, is a relatively new idea, for thousands of years children have learned what they need at their mother's knee)

We home school and my 15 year old daughter has never been to school, she has learned everything at home, or on field trips with her home-school groups, workshops at the local University, travelling with me around Canada, the US and the United Kingdom.

I'd say talk to your children, all the time, talk about the weather, the days of the week, talk about what you are doing, where you are going, what you are making for lunch - not just "Lunch is ready" - but "Today I made delicious cheddar cheese sandwiches for our lunch and those crunchy sweet green grapes you enjoy so much!" Enrich their language, supply them with a full vocabulary of words for them to use.

Make sure they have paper, crayons, pencils etc, turn the TV off - go for walks, even a walk to the park or beach can be an adventure for children, there are birds to see, caterpillars to examine, pine-cones and leaves or shells and drift-wood to find and display when you get home.
