Any ideas for a beach theme wedding?

Q. centerpieces is what I really need. Our budget is 3000.And would BBQ be a good meal to serve. We're having the wedding at a park. How can decorate the tables? Thanks for all answers.

Answer
Tropical/beach - Sea shells, polished stones, fish tanks
You could have a Hawaiian wedding at the beach, followed by the traditional luau for the reception. Or as you have the wedding in a beautiful park you could create decorations with an old-fashioned picnic reception.
The good thing about a Hawaiian or beach-theme wedding is that decorations are very easy to find. You can make your own paper leis, and miniature palm trees are an affordable addition to flowers. Be sure to check the local thrift stores for anything tropical â dishware, shirts, dresses, etc. Just make sure all the decorations, as well as the attire, remind you of the beach. And you can cut down on the cost of champagne and serve Mai Tai's or other tropical drinks.

Wedding ceremony decoration ideas?

r

We are getting married next June and the ceremony/celebration dinner will be at the same location. What are some nice and appropriate decoration ideas for the area where we will get married? If it'll help, the color I chose is aqua for the bridesmaids and it's a beach theme.

I want to avoid getting flowers because they're so expensive. Wer'e getting married in NYC. Any other ideas?
I <3 the ideas Bella. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Brown eyed girl!

Congratulations on the wedding! I have always imagined having a beach themed wedding, here are some really cute ideas.

As centerpieces, you could use these (if you're on a budget, these are very easy to make)
http://www.handmadebyallison.com/images/sharon_ruth_centerpiece_1.JPG

or this one is a bit pricey

As for decorations:

This is my Friends company Nikki Khan, She's an amazing designer, here's a good idea

http://www.exquisevents.com/gallery_wedding2.html

you could also put floating candles EVERYWHERE!

http://www.sophiesfavors.com/candlefavors_flipflopfloatingcandles_sub.jpg

or you could also use this (below) and get a black permanent marker for people to sign like a guest book and happy wishes.

OR.. GET some aqua Tulle and put it around the tables like this:

And then lay these on them with gold or silver glitter

I hope this helped! God Bless!

Hiking Table Mountain in Cape Town?

Rico

Has anyone hiked up Table Mountain? It looks fairly easy but all the guides say not to hike it alone and go in a group. Isn't the trail well-marked and stable?
Also: I'll be there in mid-March. Can I look forward to good weather?

Answer
I hiked up via the longer but easier back route (from Camps Bay) some years ago, it took about 5 hours and was not very difficult. Luckily for us there was a group ahead of us that knew exactly where to go otherwise we definitely would have got horribly lost. The route was not well-marked. There are also many different routes and tracks. If the weather deteriorates, you may not be able to see where you are going. You can get very disorientated when it is misty.

The front route (not the sea side) is shorter but much steeper and quite dangerous.

There have been several attacks on hikers so do not carry valuables other than some money for refreshments (not cheap) and the cablecar down and definitely do not hike alone (anywhere, ever, in case of injury or attack).

Take lots of water or you will get dehydrated.

I have a book called A Walking Guide for Table Mountain by Shirley Brossy describing 34 different routes and I also have a separate fold-out map for Table Mountain that is better than the diagrams in the book. You may be able to buy this from Cape Union Mart.

You may be able to join a group hike organised by a local walking/hiking club? There are some organised hikes by Cape Union Mart Hiking Club (see www.cumhike.co.za). Also have a look at www.trailsclub.co.za and the clubs in their links page.

The weather should be fine that time of year.

@EssJay: I presume by the "top" you mean the cable car station area which is a very small part of the top of Table Mountain.

Inexpensive Tent Camping near Denver CO?

Katie

Some friends and I are heading up to the mountains for a quick weekend camping trip and need a good place to stay. I would prefer something rugged and private- nothing crowded or fancy (although I wouldn't complain if the site had a picnic table or fire pit) I'm looking for something within a two hour drive from south Denver- far enough into the mountains that it's cool at night, but close enough we can set up camp on Friday night. Also, we need a relatively large area because there will be at least two (possibly three) large tents.

Please include as many specifics as you can in your answers- any information is really appreciated!

Answer
You have a lot of possibilities. Inexpensive? How about free? The USDA National Forests allow what is called dispersed camping. This is camping outside a developed campground, and it's available all over Colorado.

Close to Denver, the Pike National Forest is one of our favorites. Take Hampden (US 285) into the mountains from Denver about 50 miles. On top of Kenosha Pass is a US Forest Service campground that costs about $15 per night. Just a few miles further is the town of Jefferson.

Turn left (east) in Jefferson, (there is only one street heading east out of town) and go 8 miles. The road starts to wind along a creek, and turn left where the sign says Lost Park Road. Once you cross the steel cattle guard 1/2 mile up the road, you are in the National Forest. The first road you come to on the right has many good large campsites. If you stay on the main road, there are also many open areas with great views. Set up your tent and have a great time.

Here is a map to this area...

I need summer wedding centerpiece help!?

sharing th

I am having a july wedding on a secluded lake. We plan to exchange our vows on a small bridge, under a pergola, right on the lake and then have our reception above, where you have a clear view of the lake below. It will be similar to a destination type wedding, we plan to spend the whole weekend camping at the lake with all our family and friends.
I am having problems with the decorating. We plan to have a late wedding, starting at about 8:30, therefore we want to incorporate as much candles as possible, with out looking tacky. However i am having problems finding unique, safe display options for the candles, besides lanterns. I want the wedding to be creative, unique, and memorable, yet remain very classy and relatively simple (not an over abundance of decorations that takes away from the surroundings or alters them to the point that they are unrecognizable). And i hope that it stands out in our guests minds as much as it does in our own. I want it to blow them away, but stay true to the natural beauty of the surroundings.
We have been toying with the idea of doing Moroccan lanterns in various sizes and colors for our centerpieces: orange 22", blue 14", and yellow or green or red 10" (haven't decided on the last color quite yet.) I planned on arranging them in the center of a round table with tons of petals scattered around them. However I had planed on using very neutral colors and had basically decided on multiple shades of white and ivory. So now i am unsure what to do. If i choose to go with the colors which color should i pull out to keep it neutral. We have also contemplated feathers, random pictures of ourselves through out our relationship, (we were high school sweet hearts and will be together for 8 years by our wedding.) sticking with just random sizes of white lanterns, or doing a more traditional flower tower, with flame-less candles and feather's strewn throughout. I am obsessed with vintage themed weddings.
I want the wedding to feel very romantic, and seem very well put together, and i fear that to many colors will stray away from my vision making it appear more casual and less elegant. I planned on using white ball chairs with a sash, and no covers. I have helped plan some very extravagant weddings in the past so everyone is expecting mine to be over the top, and i don't want to disappoint, fingers crossed i haven't out done myself. Basically I am looking for any creative unique ideas that you have seen personally or perhaps have done at your own wedding that you feel may fit the bill. Any suggestions or ideas would be very appreciated, and especially pictures. In fact please post lots of pictures via facebook or even my email whatever suits you. My email is brianne_teeter@hotmail.com. Thank you for taking your time to read my ridiculously long post and helping me!

Creative place card ideas?

anonymous

It's for a tropical themed event. I need something to put on the tables so guests know where to sit/what table to sit at. Anything creative other than plain old cards?

Also, where can I buy place cards?

Answer
Floral outlets, wedding planning outlets, business supplies, party supply outlets should have place cards.

OR

Do a Napkin holder band with room for name, decorate with tropical flower.

OR

Make a variety of "tents" place holders using a program such as Print Shop. Create a Postcard that can be folded in half thus creating your tent. Hand write name on tents.

Depending on number of people, choose a variety of graphics that go with your theme. Print on heavy weight paper. Can vary colors.
Cut out, fold.

Table for four would use one set of graphics if you want to theme the tables themselves.
Beach
Sunbathing
Sandcastle
Sunset
Life guards
Light houses
Luau
Music and beach dancing
Beach volley ball
Beach chair, towel, shade
Palm trees, coconut, pineapple
Variety of sea shells
Different pictures of sea shell decorations
Sea gulls and sand pipers
Beach scenes and waves

Can place Candles in sand on/in appropriate dish.
Palm leaf place mat; straw place mats; beach mat for runner on buffet table. New kids sand toys as decor on tables.
Hula dressed Barbie type dolls. Decorated Conch shells.
Palm tree centerpiece. Sand art cake with Non-real seashell decoration. Tint icing sand color, decorate shaped cake on top of larger flat layer, garnish with footprints, sea shells, sand tops, tiny flip flops. Can have table cloths with tiny footprints walking across sand. Enlist small children for this one, beige table cloths with darker beige paint for foot prints.

Have a beach decorated CANVAS for those attending to sign in a darker sand color of course. Can be a door prize or be gifted to the person or organization in whose honor the event is being held.

Beach theme wedding decorating ideas?

r

Any ideas of what we can use to decorate the tables at our reception besides the centerpiece?

Please don't say "seashells". We're using these for the center pieces in a bowl.

Answer
I had a beach wedding in Jamaica and was clueless on how to decorate for it. But there are many traditional items you can use and still use to provide a beach themed setting:

*Starfish - we found many different colors of these to maybe use with place cards
**Floating Candles/Flowers - If you're doing an evening event, these would look great surrounding the seashells
***Pictures - Beach scenery like the sunset over the water, water excursions, boats; you could also do some games with the picture idea, have people write out their best vacation ideas or guess your honeymoon location

You have so much to work with; use Google Images for additional help.

teenage end of school year party help!?

Q. im having an end of the school year party for about 60 7th and 8th graders. i have decided to have the party at my house and we have plenty of room and about an acre of land. we are planning on having a bonfire but im not sure what else to plan. i dont want everyone just sitting around because thats no fun! i have been to plenty of parties like that and i ended up leaving...so if you have any fun ideas please share! :) also decorating and invitation ideas

thankyou!

Answer
I love the other poster's response of relay races and summer Olympics. You can do a big barbeque, grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs, have an ice cream bar, lots of soda, lemonade, and iced tea, and LOTS of games.

You can have volley ball, badmitten, kickball, softball, there are plenty of team games you can play being there is a huge group and plenty of space. You can also do water games, water balloons, sprinkler, or one of those water things that they sell in toy stores, you run the water down it, it looks like a plastic mat, and then you just slide down it, but it's flat. I'm sure if you go to a toy store to the water/yard section you will find lots of things you can set up in the yard. Even Target or WalMart, even the big water gun, those water blasters, you can play with them in the yard if a parent can bring them later after school lets out and if they're allowed.

If everyone can chip in, you can rent out a bouncy castle. I know where I live, that's very popular here with every age group, even older kids and teens at every party. I would stick to going to a toy section though and seeing what they have in their backyard and water section for games and water things that you and your friends can do.

You can buy ice cream and toppings and set up an ice cream bar for everyone to make their own sundaes.

You can set up lawn chairs, some with umbrellas over them and some without, so people can sit and chat when they want to, also get some inflatable beach balls lots of them for everyone to throw around and have fun with. Get bubbles, make it light hearted and fun. Even a bubble machine get a few of them going with bubble solution, see if any of the kids have any at home and that will be fun to have the yard filled with bubbles!

I would walk around Toys 'r Us and see what they have for spring, I know it sounds like it's younger than the age group you are, but you'd be surprised at the fun ideas you can come up with. The water balloon fights, maybe even a tug a war game with the 2 teams and put a baby pool in the middle so the losing team goes into the baby pool, etc, I'm sure you can find lots of ideas roaming around the store.

Make sure to have lots of music for everyone to listen to, I would also buy some beach pails and put the plastic forks and spoons and things in the pails, and maybe find some really small pails to decorate tables with as centerpieces, etc. You can even use the beach pails and shovels for the ice cream and use the shoves to serve ice cream, and the pails to hold the ice cream containers.

You can even use beach towels as tablecloths and lay some beach towels around the yard for people to sit on. Get some plastic sunglasses and visors, go the dollar stores and see what you can find there. I would check the dollar store first for these things then venture out to the other stores to see what they have.

For the invites, be creative, but don't stress out. You don't want to spend a fortune on them. If you can get a good deal, and if you're inviting the entire 7th and 8th grade class, but a few beach balls, write out the invite, deflate the ball and have the classes have to blow up the ball to read the invite if the teachers will allow that to happen. This way you only have to do about 2 invites per class and not 60-70 individual ones. If you have to do one per person, it's going to be harder to be creative without spending a fortune.

Your party sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun! I hope you and your friends have a great time and that some of these ideas helped!

Answer
Had a luau for New Years Eve a few years back, we had an area covered in straw beach mats, which we purchased at the dollar store (all though you can also get them online). This is where everyone hung out in their bathing suit while they were eating, chatting, etc.

We set up a photo booth of a surfboard (you can rent one or buy one) against a blue backdrop and people put on lei's, beach comber hats, hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, etc and had their photo taken as a souvenier, which they put in a photo frame made out of seashells at the party. We also purchased craft kits from Oriental Trading Company which included seashell boxes, leis, seashell photo frames, and starfish Hawaiian character pins.

We set up a prize booth for prizes when you won games. The booth was decorated to look like a tropical hut. We used a table, and then we used wrapping paper tubes painted dark brown as tree trunks, and then cut out green construction paper palm leaves to hang over a carboard awning. This is where people went to pick up their prizes when they won a game, all though you could use it for other things as well.

For food ideas, lots of snacks, blue jello with gummy fish in it is a great dessert, goldfish crackers served in sand pails (clean of course) is a great snack, gummy sharks and gummy fish are also great for snacks and candy. You have to have a cake, and we did a wonderful fish cake that we got from Family Fun's web site: http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=50135 it used Necco Wafers for the scales, everyone loved it. They also have a mermaid, and some other themed cakes you could use if you think the fish is too baby-ish.

For music, look for luau party CD's at party supply stores. Some of the luau themed songs that we used included:
Liliu E Lei Momi
It's Just An Old Hawaiian Custom
My Little Grass Shack
Sweet Leilani
Hukilau
Hawaiian Hula Eyes
Little Brown Gal
Hawaiian Wedding Song
Beyond The Reef
On The Beach
My Yellow Ginger
Hawaiian War Chant
Lovely Hula Hands Lei Momi
Aloha Oe
The Hula Hoop Song

I attended a luau party once that used other songs like Surfing USA, Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride, etc instead of traditional luau songs, and they fit the theme really well. I don't think that the latest techno and dance party music really fits with a luau theme, but that's up to you.

We decorated with tissue paper pineapples and parrots, and we made three dimensional sea creatures on an ocean wall of blue crepe paper. The sea creatures were made out of card stock, double sided images, and we stuffed them with cotton to make them three dimensional. We suspended them in the air with clear fishing wire from Walmart, it made a really neat effect.

Other decorations that we did was to use coconut cups to drink out of, use flower straws or tissue paper flamingo straws, we used tropical sunset themed napkins, we bought a hula skirt to go around the table, and we gave everyone in attendance hula skirts, purchased from Oriental Trading Company. If hula skirts are out of your price range, than you could purchase the straw beach comber style hats by the dozen on Oriental Trading Company.

We paid a tropical luau bingo game with the word LUAU across the top instead of bingo. We got the cards for free, printed from DLTK-Kids web site.

We got most of our items from Party City, dollar stores, and Oriental Trading Company (their website).

We played tons of games, one of the favorites was using "crab legs" (a staple remover, the pac man style) blindfolded to dig out small plastic fish out of a big pail filled with packing peanuts dyed blue to look like water. You cashed in your plastic fish for tickets. All of our games used tickets and you cashed in your tickets for various prizes at the prize hut.

Other games that we had included throwing ping pong balls into goldfish bowls, and if you were successful you won a bagged goldfish (a local pet store was happy to donate them, but if you can't get them donated, then you could always buy them at Walmart). There was a water balloon toss. We also made a bean bag toss game, by painting a giant box to look like a whale, and adding cardboard fins, and then we cut the front of the box off for the mouth, and added teeth, and took turns throwing bean bags into the mouth of the whale. There were many other games and activities as well.

The list goes on and on. I have lots of photos of the decorations that we used, as well as a complete list of all the games we did, which included coconut bowling (complete with hula girl pins) and pin the monkey on the palm tree, so if you need more ideas, please feel free to e-mail me directly.

How do I buy gear that uses less space for car camping?

MthrNature

In the past I've done a lot of car camping. However, even in a full size 4 door sedan, I am using up all kinds of space with clothing, gear, ice chests, etc...so much so that with 2 people, the trunk and back seats are fully occupied.

I'm in a position right now to order a new set of camping gear. How should I go about it so that the gear all fits into the large trunk of my full size car? I envision being able to provide for 4 people in my trunk with food and gear, and still have the seats to transport them.

I'm not a poet or an English major, so if I need to add details, please let me know.

Thanks!

Answer
The first thing is to try to reduce the amount of gear and clothing you bring with you. While you need fresh socks and underwear every day, pants and shirts can usually go two days between changes. Exchange bulky clothing such as denim and flannel for more compact chinos or synthetics. Trim out unnecessary items from your toiletries kit. If you have a properly-rated sleeping bag you won't need to bring blankets. Leave your pillows at home and stuff your pillowcase with your extra clothing. Minimize your cooking gear down to the bare essentials.

After you eliminate or swap all you can to save weight, then you can look at replacing items with gear that's more compact.

The first easy swap is to get rid of those cotton bath and dish towels and switch to synthetic pack towels.

Things like lanterns and bug lamps can take up a lot of room. If you have huge gas or oil lanterns, consider replacing them with more compact (and longer running) LED lanterns. Instead of bug lamps or citronella candles bring mosquito coils. Replacing folding tables and chairs with roll-up tables and bag chairs will save space.

Also look at the size of your coolers and how you pack them into the trunk. Sometimes going with a different cooler design will allow you to pack your car more efficiently without sacrificing cooler capacity. And if you're bringing more than two coolers, (one for beverages, which gets used most often, and one for food), you've got too many.

Do you bring both a stove and a grill? Maybe you can consolidate by using a Coleman Grill/Stove unit (just don't use the grill side for pots and pans, it _CAN_ melt; don't ask how I know). You can also get a griddle accessory for this unit, which might replace your frying pan entirely.

Next look at your sleeping bag. Although they can be a bit expensive, you can find sleeping bags that compress down to 1/4 the size of a cheap unit. 9" x 15" pack size is easily obtainable without spending over $100 per bag. Then look at what's going under your sleeping bag. Is it a huge cot or mattress? You might be able to save a bunch of space by switching to a more compact-folding cot or self-inflating mattress.

Then look at your shelter(s). How much room could you save if you went with a smaller tent design? Is it worth the trade-off in space? Maybe you could find a tent with similar floor space that packs into a smaller footprint. Do you also bring along an easy-up, screen room or gazebo to shelter your kitchen/dining/sitting area?

Finally, if the above doesn't solve your packing problems, or the cost exceeds your budget, you can always add additional storage space by using a removable roof-top basket and/or waterproof cargo bag to handle additional gear. Just be careful to adequately secure everything before heading out on your trip.
.

What are the major accessories I will need for camping besides a tent and Air Mattress?

xylem

I am a first time camper, yea I know it is sad but I have just purchased my coleman tent and air mattress and I was just wondering what other esential camping accessories I will need? Also, any camping tips would be most helpful! Thanks

Answer
My hubby and I just started tent camping with friends two years ago, and it took us a while to figure out everything we needed (btw, good start getting an air mattress!). Oh, and don't forget to waterproof your tent BEFORE the trip with waterproofing spray sold at sporting goods stores!

Here's my abbreviated packing list. You have some items already (obviously), but I've highlighted items you might still need to purchase:

SHELTER:

-Tent
-Tarp to Go Under Tent (should be the same size as tent base, not much bigger or you'll have to fold it under. This keeps the tent bottom dry, and you don't want rain collecting on the tarp and rolling under!)
-Air mattress
-Air mattress pump
-Sleeping Bags / Pillows
-Extra Blankets (1 per person in case of chilly weather)
-Beach Towel (for when you track mud all over your tent)
-Lantern (battery-operated) to hang in tent
-Foldable Chairs / Lawn Chairs (to sit around fire)
-Rope or Line to hang items to dry on - like wet towels

FOOD:

-Hand Axe (to chop fire wood)
-Long-reach lighters
-Fire-starting kindling twigs (buy them from camping supply stores - they're wood chips soaked in some fire-starting chemical)
-Pie Irons (to cook food in over the fire - these are ESSENTIAL!)
-Campfire Fork (to roast weiners, marshmallows on)
-Food (should include basics like eggs, bread, peanut butter, deli meats, cheese, butter, hot dogs, s'mores makings, pop, juice, tea, coffee, ketchup, mustard, brownie mix, pizza sauce, pepperoni, potatoes, oatmeal, beef stew, trail snacks, chips, popcorn, etc.)
-Campfire Cooking Pot
-LARGE Cooler with ice
-Egg Holder Storage Case (designed for camping trips)
-Plastic Utensils, Cups, Paper Plates
-Garbage Bags
-Giant Ziploc Bags (to place singed pie irons in when packing to come home)
-Sharp Knife
-Rubbermaid Tote to wash dishes in
-Dish Soap
-5-6 Dish Towels
-Campfire Glove (heatproof gloves that allow you to pick up hot logs off the fire, or hot pans)
-Mugs (for coffee & tea)
-Kettle to boil water (should be campfire safe)
-Bottled water - large quantities
-Picnic Table Cloth (campsite picnic tables are dirrrrrty!)
-Can Opener
-Travel Cutting Board
-Aluminum Foil & Ziploc Bags
-Non-Stick Cooking Spray

CLOTHING / HYGIENE / SAFETY:

-Standard clothes
-Extra socks, 1 pair extra walking shoes
-Rain coat, poncho, or garbage bags
-Bug Spray
-Sunscreen
-Usual Hygiene Products (forget shampoo if it's a short trip - you're allowed to be dirty when tent camping!)
-First Aid items (bandaids, benadryl, calamine lotion, antiseptic cream, aspirin, immodium AD, etc.)
-Hand Soap
-Towels (in case you get soaked in rain)
-Hand Sanitizer

FUN / OTHER:

-Deck of Cards / Travel Boardgame
-Camera / Extra Batteries
-Flashlights / Extra Batteries
-Fishing Pole / Tackle Box
-Lots of Cash to buy firewood near campsite - it's expensive!
-Wallet, ID, Cell Phone

Phew! It seems like a lot, but skip here and there and you'll be wishing you had these items when you're at the campsite. It's worth filling up the car with Rubbermaid Bins filled with this stuff. Oh - don't forget Rubbermaid Bins to put all this stuff in! You'll need to keep your possession and food waterproof if it rains!

Have fun!

Whats a fun beachy way of doing table numbers?

The centerpieces have not been picked yet, table clothes are light blue, the wedding is just causal and everythings happen at the beach so thats the only theme type thing to it.

Not sure how hard or labor intensive it might be, but it would be so cute to make small sand castles, and then have a little "flag" with the number.

What to do for table numbers?

Does the venue usually provide table numbers, or do I have to make them myself? Am I supposed to come up with some sort of holders for them, or buy picture frames to put them in? Any ideas?
Thank you!

Answer
Call your venue and ask the events/wedding coordinator.

Our venue provided table number holders, but I made our own table numbers using a Brides kit that matched our invitations and name cards.

You could use picture frames, picture holders (the wire type stands), or google your wedding's theme (if you have one) and see if you can find something to match. IE, our theme was beach and I found starfish and beach chairs....but ultimately decided on just the simple ones to save money.

I definitely recommend trying to find them on eBay over buying them in the store! Good luck!!

I need help with centerpieces for my destination wedding~?

We are going to key west to have out wedding. Usually traditonal weddings, one person takes home the centerpiece. Obviously with everyone flying in I doubt they would want the floral centerpiece. The wedding will be held outdoors, so it will be hot! I wanted some suggestions on different beach themed centerpieces, one idea I was thinking about was having a bowl with water and seashells and having floating candles and flowers, anyone have any other suggestions. Something simple but unique!
i love everyones suggestions so far, the rock candy is a great idea!!!

Answer
You could have various shapes and sizes of glass bowls filled with water, floating flowers and floating candles and/or glass bowls filled with sand, sea shells and a small pillar candle in the middle of each bowl (set up in the sand).

Or, you could get a little more creative and fill small square glass vases with sand and sea glass in your wedding colors or just blue and green to go with the beach theme with a small pillar candle in the middle. Or if you want a tasty centerpiece which could also serve as their favor, have the small square glass vases on each table filled with sand and then get the pretty rock candy on sticks and place them in the sand. You can order rock candy in any color you want to go with your wedding colors. Tie a small favor tag to the stick with a little message or even their name to double as a place card. The centerpieces would be colorful and they can take home a stick of rock candy as their favor.

Yes, most places WILL allow you to have glass, especially if it's vases, I see it done all the time. I don't think they're going to make your guests eat off of paper plates and drink out of styrofoam!

what can i use for centre pieces at a beach wedding?

i am getting marry soon and would like to get marry at the beach

Answer
Hi Ingrid! I have a niece who is getting married to a doctor colleague in June of this year at a beautiful Philippine Island called Bora (short for Boracay) where the white sand is so fine it's like treading on sugar. I can just imagine your excitement at this point as you plan out your special moment.

Being a florist of many years and having attended and organized many weddings, I think that the best focal point and centerpiece in your wedding should be the area/spot where you will take your marital vows.

Everyone's attention will be on you and your groom. I would suggest a gazebo-like area or an arch of beautiful, fresh flowers with your color motif (be it the color of your flowers or the ribbons and the decor that will go with it). A red carpet can lead to the altar with more flower stands along it's sides.

You didn't mention what time your wedding will be, but if it's timed in the late afternoon, the sunset at the background, the tides turning, the scenery around will be big plus factors. When the sun is down, the caterers can attend to the lighting of torches around the reception area to create some ambiance. A bonfire at a distance will also be good but someone has to monitor it so that young kids won't get too near it. If you are Asian, you might also consider having a pig on the spit cooking in the background or a roasted calf. In the open air, the fresh breeze and the wide expanse of the sea is already quite a big bonus.

If you think there is the possibility of rain, consider another option. Big canopies so that you do not get wet, Same with the guests.

The next place that will draw the attention of your guests will be your buffet table where you should put a massive centerpiece- a combination of flowers, fruits, with maybe a mini beach umbrella.

Of course, the table where you will put your wedding cake is also going to draw raves if you add some mini beach balls or cocktail umbrellas as decor aside from the usual flowers.

Your wedding giveaways should also have a beach motif.

I do hope you will have a great and memorable wedding at the beach!

does waimea bay have reef or rocks?

Jack W

im just wondering.

Answer
Waimea Bay is located in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oâahu in the Hawaiian Islands at the mouth of the Waimea River. Waimea Valley extends behind Waimea Bay. Waimea means "Red Water" in Hawaiian.

Captain Clerke aboard HMS Resolution stopped at Waimea Bay on 28 February 1779. Clerke had shortly before taken command of the ship after Capt. James Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay on 14 February. Waimea Bay was the only Oâahu anchorage visited by the expedition. Waimea Valley was densely populated at the time, and the remains of a Puâu o Mahuka, an important heiau (Hawaiian temple) can still be seen above the bay. Puâu o Mahuka can be visited by driving up Pupukea Road and taking the first right through the cattle guard. A short hike down the hill brings you to a spectacular view Waimea Bay and the North Shore towards the Waiâanae Mountain range.

In winter, Waimea and other North Shore locations such as Pipeline and Sunset Beach host a number of surfing contests because of the large waves found here. These waves are created by winter storms in the North Pacific, and their arrival on Oâahu's North Shore are typically forecast accurately several days in advance. In summer, Waimea typically has clear and calm water.

The surf break at Waimea Bay was significant in the development of Big wave surfing. Larger surf at the bay went unridden for years until November 7, 1957 [1] when a handful of surfers finally paddled out and rode the giant waves that break off the northern point of the bay. While the surf only breaks big several times a year, Waimea was the most prestigious big wave surf break in the world for decades. With the advent of tow-in surfing, more and more big wave breaks have been discovered that are far superior in quality than Waimea. However, the bay still holds a significant place even in today's world of big wave surfing.

The well known Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau takes place in this point to honour the legendary surfer and the first lifeguard of the North Shore of Oahu. Since its inception in 1984, the tournament has only been held seven times, due to a precondition that there be waves at least 20 feet high at Waimea Bay. The most recent tournament was in December 2004, when waves in the bay reached 30 to 50 feet high.

In Summer, Waimea Bay is a playground of fun for freedivers, S.C.U.B.A. divers, and those who desire to jump off "da Big Rock" or "Jump Rock" - a rock that is perfectly positioned in the bay (for use at your own risk!). You can also find rock climbers practicing their skills on the cliff and in the dry cave on the beach. The Bay- as well as Three Tables, Pupukea, & Shark's Cove- are protected waters. The diversity of life in these waters is astounding.

There are other locations named Waimea in the Hawaiian islands. Waimea, Kauai & Waimea, Hawaii (Big Island)

Waimea Bay is one of the filming locations used for the television series Lost, which is an American drama-adventure television series surrounding the survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious tropical island. (The location of the downed plane - not there anymore - is Mokuleia at the end of Dillingham airstrip almost to road's end at Ka Ena Point.)

What are the MUST SEE DO and VISIT in Hawaii?

carrie

Staying for 3 days and 2 night only.
Will be staying in Oahu, honululu.

Answer
If I could only be on O'ahu for three days I would drive up the Old Pali highway and head to the Pali Overlook; take a round the island drive to visit my favorite beaches; be sure to check out every beach and overlook between Waimanalo and Hawaii Kai (Makapuu/Sandys/Halona/Lanai/Hanauma); watch the big waves at Waimea Bay if it's winter (check out a surfing competition if one's going on) or go snorkeling/diving at 3 Tables if it's summer (when the water is flat); watch the sunset from Sunset Beach or Maili Beach; walk Kalakaua Avenue through Waikiki at night to people watch; visit the Waikiki Aquarium; climb to the Lanikai pillboxes and watch the sunrise over the Mokulua Islands; get real shave ice (with ice cream at the bottom) at Island Snow next to Kailua Beach; eat manapua from the Island Manapua Factory in Manoa and get a box of them to take on the plane...and then figure out how I can come back and do it all again.

Which Hawaii's island is best for young & old? :D?

:D Sprint

I'm planning a family trip to Hawaii. Not sure which island to go. Basically, we have a 2 yrs old, 3 1/2 yrs old, 34 yrs old, 36 yrs old, 59 yrs old, 60 yrs old.

My husband and myself, two kids, his mom, and my mom. :D All ages.

We're not planning to sky dive or do any highrise jumping. But, like to see things, small boatings trip, etc. basically small and easy activities for any age to do.

I heard of Maui is a good place but what there to do? I've been to the big island before having kids, we did alot of stuffs there but not sure if other islands are better.

Planning to go on Thanksgiving holiday week. How's the weather? Any suggestion for affordable trip package or nice hotel?

Thanks for your inputs.

Answer
Your kids are small so they will be fine with any of the Islands. I would say The Adults would enjoy Maui the most, since it seems to have the most diverse entertainment possibilities for Younger Adults as well as older Adults...(I will Post Maui Ideas below) Oahu is alot of fun, it is the more Metropolitan and City like of the Islands...my Teenagers 13,14 and 17 love it since they are able to run around and do things on their own if they want since so much is within walking distance from your Hotels in Waikiki...I Love Oahu as well and I'm 45...but SOME older persons don't care for it much. Waikiki Beach is one of my all-time favorite Beaches (We all Surf) as is Kaanapali on Maui. I have been to the other Islands but these two Islands are My Families favorites...

~~Below I will Post Our Families favorites for Maui and Oahu~~Aloha..Enjoy yourself and have a "Blue Hawaii" or a "Mai Tai" for me...LOL

extended stay in hawaii...?

does anyone know if any of the hawaiian islands have an exteded stay type hotel? where you can actually live in for a couple months?

Answer
There are A LOT all over the islands. I spent the last 3 years of my life living on Oahu, and I got to travel around to other islands a lot while I was there. It depends on where you want to live, and what conditions you're willing to put up with. I'll give you three recommendation is that I've stayed in.

The first one is on Oahu's North Shore. It's called the Backpackers. We stayed there for just one night when we first moved to Hawaii. It's at a pretty little beach called Three Tables, and it's within walking distance to one of my favorite beaches, Waimea Bay. They have dorm style living (where you share a room with many people) or you can get your own room. Ours was a corner room with an ocean view. There's a kitchen and books and snorkels and all kinds of stuff for you to do. The only thing it doesn't have is location close to jobs. So, if you're going to be working while you're in Hawaii, this might not be a good option for you.

The next one is also on Oahu. It's in Waikiki, like a block and a half from "the duke statue" which is just a landmark people. It's right in front of the main Waikiki beach where they rent surfboards. The Kuhio Village is a hotel/apartment that has one tower for hotel guests and another that they rent out like apartments. We stayed in the hotel side, but stayed one night with a friend in the apartment side. They basically had just a hotel room with a small kitchenette and a balcony, and that's where they lived for 6 months. This hotel is not luxury living though. Everywhere in Hawaii has cockroaches, and this place definitely has it's fair share. It's not a nice, new, luxury resort, but if you're looking for a cheap place to live with a killer location (you can work in Waikiki in a restaurant or bar and make really good money with very few hours), then this is the place for you.

The third place I'll recommend is on the Big Island in Kailua-Kona. We stayed there for one night when we visited the Big Island, but I wish we had stayed there longer. It's within walking distance from super fun Kailua Kona (you can also get a job there if you need extra cash on your trip). I loved Kailua. And the Big Island is definitely something to see. This hostel is more like just a big house that was converted. We had our own private room (again, corner room with ocean view) and we shared a living space with one other couple sharing a room. There was a nice kitchen, TV area, dining area, great big shared balcony with BBQ and hammock, and Internet access.

I would stay in all three of these places again. I put links here for you too, so you can take a look and maybe get prices and rates. Hopefully it will help you make your decision. A lot of people do what you're considering, go to Hawaii for a few months.

I would probably recommend doing all three!! Go to the one in Waikiki, and making that your home base. But maybe go to the one on the North Shore when you first get there for a little 5 day vacation. Then, when you're ready to head home and fly back to the mainland, go to the Big Island for 5 days and stay at that one. That would be a great trip. :)

Have fun!

camping recipes for the campfire?

AddieMom13

Hi
I'm looking for some fun and yummy recipes to use with a campfire.
We're going to do the obvious ones (s'mores, potatoes and corn on the cob in foil, hot dogs on a stick), but what other things have you made with your campfire?
We don't have a tripod with a grill pan or hook, so it has to be something that can be cooked in foil or on a stick/camp fork.
We have a table-top grill as well (well, we have a full kitchen because we're borrowing a camper), but I really want to use the fire as much as possible. Thanks!
Also, I hate banana boats. Thanks :)

Answer
Silver turtles (foil dinners) are good.
2 12"x12" sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil
1/4 lb of meat, patty or crumbled
1/2 med potato, sliced or diced
1/4 med onion, sliced or diced
diced bell peppers
diced carrots
shredded cabbage
mushrooms
seasoning to taste
oil (if low fat meat, just a teaspoon or so)

Place ingredients (that you like) onto one foil piece, starting with meat and ending with seasoning
fold up as packet and seal edges by rolling.
Place seam side down on other piece of foil and fold up again and seal.

Place on coals, 15-20 minutes then turn over for another 10-15 minutes.
Carefully remove (don't burn your self)
Let sit 5-10 minutes (if you can)
Slice through foil, roll back edges and eat.

Stick Biscuits.
Mix up biscuit dough using slightly less liquid.
Roll into a rope about 12-15 inches long and 1/2 to 2/3 in thick.
Wrap in spiral around end of stick
Hold over fire, rotating to keep from unwrapping and cook until golden brown
Gently free from stick and eat.
Stick may need to be oiled and care in choosing stick for cooking, non-toxic wood, I prefer Alder or Maple.

Bag Breakfast
small brown paper lunch sack
2 pieces thick bacon cut in half
1-2 eggs
salt - pepper
String

Put bacon in the bottom of the bag and hold over coals until grease starts showing through the bag
Crack eggs into bag, tie string to neck of bag and stick.
Use stick to hold bag over coals until eggs are done.

Camping in NJ Pine Barrens for the first time?

Christine

My mom and I are going camping in Bass River State Forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrens for the first time. It's a public campground with showers, flush toilets, and a fire ring and we'll be sleeping in a tent. We're only staying for one night, but since i've never done this before I was wondering what to bring and if there are any other important tips to keep in mind.

Answer
This time of year it is plenty hot enough not to require extra layers. Expect to sweat and try to wear synthetics that wick up moisture and dry quickly to stay cool. A change of underwear, a clean shirt and a fresh pair of socks and sock liners and a swimsuit should be all you need for spare clothes. Long sleeves/pants will help keep bugs off, but bring a pair of shorts to sleep in. Wear good hiking shoes or boots and don't forget thick socks with sock liners to help keep your feet cool and comfortable.

A basic sleeping bag and mat will be fine; you'll probably wind up sleeping on top of the bag in shorts and a t-shirt. A battery fan will be appreciated. Keep a clean campsite and do your cooking/eating away from your tent. Store all your food in your vehicle. Even with all this, raccoons will likely visit your campsite but will usually stay to the shadows away from people and the camp fire -- unless you have dropped scraps on the ground or haven't packed away your food. I have never seen or heard of bears being a problem in the pine barrens.

You will need a container to carry water from provided spigots to your site. The blue plastic ones sold at WalMart are fine. Check to see if your area has picnic tables, you might need to bring your own folding table and chairs. If you use the campground's picnic table, you'll want a plastic tablecloth or two (one for the table top, the other cut in half lengthwise for over the benches) and clips to keep them in place. Bring several kitchen-sized trash bags as you are required to pack out all your own trash. Bring your own stove and/or grill, or grate to put over the campfire, plus whatever cooking/eating containers and utensils you'll need. A lantern, flashlights and a small first aid kit are useful.

Get your supplies before setting-out from home or on your way, as supermarkets are quite far from the campgrounds. Use empty soda bottles filled 3/4 with water and frozen instead of bags of ice in your cooler: they last longer and don't leave your cooler full of water when they melt. Two coolers -- 1 for food and 1 for beverages -- are better than one. Remember: keep the food in your car to avoid animals. Note: alcoholic beverages are not permitted in state parks.

Bring your own dry/seasoned firewood. Chop kindling in advance or bring a hatchet. Cotton balls saturated in petroleum jelly make excellent tinder. Have a shovel and large bucket of water near the fire in case of accidents, and keep your tent far enough away that sparks and flying embers won't melt holes in the fabric. Camper courtesy is to clean-out the fire ring and leave a few sticks of firewood for the next camper (as well as completely cleaning-up all trash from your site before leaving).

Bring flip-flops or water shoes for the bathrooms, and obviously your own soap, shampoo and towel. Also, pull the cardboard tube out of 1/2 a roll of toilet paper, squash the paper flat and stick in a zip-lock bag. Carry the TP, a small hand trowel (shovel) and a second large zip-lock bag with you while hiking just in case the need suddenly strikes on the trail, or the bathrooms run out of TP.

Although you are not permitted to "swim" in any rivers or streams unless a lifeguard is present, you can legally wade in them to cool off. The water is stained a dark tea color due to tree sap and pig iron in the soil, but is actually quite clean (though should still be filtered, treated or boiled before drinking, except when drawn from a tap marked as drinking or potable water).

Biting flies, mosquitoes and other bugs will be in full force. Ticks are present year 'round. A cocktail of Avon's Skin So Soft and DEET will help keep them at bay. Wear a hat or a buff that's been treated with Permethrin to help keep bugs away from your face and sweat out of your eyes. And don't forget sun block and sunglasses. Leave make-up, hair products, etc at home -- the heat and humidity will cause these to run all over your face, making you look like Frankenstein, and the scent will attract bugs and animals.

When you stop at the ranger station to check-in, ask for any pamphlets, guides, maps to the area to plan your day's activities. Also get their phone numbers for emergency calls.

Camping with a 6month old?

highly wor

Im taking my 6month old camping, did you take a 6month old camping, and how was the baby where the pretty content? Explain how everything went. PLEASE ;)

Answer
we took ours and it was great. we brought the play pen and he slept in that, we had a tent that was kind of like a 2 room, so he was in his play pen and we were on the ground in sleeping bags next to him. tips- bring bugspray wipes. they work great on babies and keep him covered. we went in the summer and he got very hot so we grabbed a basin and filled it with water and he played in that in the shade for a long time, while we bbq-ed and ate or cleaned up. you can fold a towel in the bottom so he won't slip around and place it right up on the picnic table next to you. also - get a site with electric, and bring a fan. you don't want him to get too hot during his naps - so good luck. you are going to have a great time!!

Outdoor furniture for balcony?

:)

I'm trying to find a couple of chairs and a side table for a small balcony. The problem I keep running into with most chairs is that when you sit in them, you are at eye level with the balcony railing, which is not ideal since the balcony faces the ocean and we would rather enjoy the view than stare at a rail.

Has anyone found chairs that are slightly higher than the standard balcony railings? I've also considered getting some that are lower to the ground, but most of those are too low to the ground and hard to get in and out of.

Thanks!

Answer
CedarStore.com will custom make just about anything from Red Cedar and Treated Pine. I would recommend that you look at their chairs/benches and tables.

I was having the same issue about the height not finding anything I really liked. They are currently custom-making a bench and table set (for me) at a higher height than what they offer on their site.

Take a look at their site and then give them a call - I am sure you will be pleased with them. I am!

World theme living room decor. I recently painted my living room and I'm now in the process of decorating it.

Three walls are like a pumpkin butter (behr) and one is ground nutmeg. Our fireplace is white. We have bamboo woven shades on the window. My husband wants a "world theme decor." He wants to put up pictures of places we would like to visit. I am not too keen on the idea but I'm going to go with it. Any ideas as to what I could do? I don't think it would be too hard to find wall decor, I'm having a hard time finding accents for the coffee table, accent table etc. Any suggestions??

Outdoor lighting for our wedding reception?

Rerers91

My Fiance and I are having an evening reception August 6th in Indiana. Our venue is a very NICE school with a huge field in the back and a gymnasium that we could also use, but we love the thought of dancing and celebrating under the open sky-so we're trying to stick to outdoors! Now, the field in the back is humongous! like 2 or 3 soccer fields, with a half-mile sidewalk around the edge. My only dilemma is lighting! So, I am in need of some really creative *inexpensive* lighting ideas! we can get electricity through a generator and extension cords. i just need help figuring out how i'm going to light this place when there aren't any trees around. Ideas? Be as "out there" as you want, and i'm willing to craft together some invention, i just need ideas. Thanks!

Answer
Few answers...first congrats on the marriage

1. tiki torches on the outer rim of the used area. They case off a good amount of light. They are also relatively safe
2. For the tables. Battery operated lamps (they can be found in camping section of a good sized walmart. Prices and sizes range)
3. call a rental company. They usually have the large lights you may want. They often have better prices then people think (call around to get different quotes)

again congrats on the upcoming marriage.

What are some simple foods that can help increase my bench press?

Jessy

Ok, im 17 years old, and i really wish i could follow a strict diet, but i really can only eat right now what ever is at the dinner table. I am wondering if there are any simple foods, maybe such as peanut butter sandwiches, that would be able to help me get the protein i need. If any of you can just list some of those, that would be helpful,
thanks in advance.

Answer
Anything with lots of protein

I need plans to build a picnik table.?

Metal

I have looked on the internet and can't find any. The want you to buy theres. I need a big one too. Maybe for about 10 or more people. I want to make it out of treated wood. Are there any carpenters out there?

Answer
I went to the library a few years ago and found a 'woodworking projects' book. It had a picnic table in it which is octagonal and easily seats 10 people. The 4 benches (each handles two sides of the octagon) aren't attached, so you can carry them over the sit around the campfire if you want.

I copied the plans for the table at 10 cents per page (it amounted to about 50 cents, I think). Then I built it - I chose Cedar, not treated wood. It weighs less and is very good at handling weather. We've had the table at least 8 years, because I built it before I was disabled nearly 8 years ago.

I had no background in woodwork - the instructions were great.

Try your library.

beach wedding problem..picnic tables..long reception and elderly??

Lindsay W

I am having a beach wedding at a wood pavilion. There are wood seat everywhere...attached to the pavilion, there is nowhere else to sit. Should I make some cushions? Any ideas?
I can't have chairs....there's no room. I have to deal with these benches. I will check the rental companies, my only fear is the cushions need to attach or they may slide off....but I might get them to make customs if they can rerent. Some one else report the link given by the dude down there....guy is spamming, they need more than just my complaint. thx. go somewhere else you nerd
it's not the ugliness...I don't mind the natural wood color...much better than plastics

I'm worried about my elderly guests' bottoms getting sore....they need something comfortable to sit on for so long...one of them is 90!

Answer
Instead of cushions, get plastic table cloths from a party store and cut them in hald (or even thirds) and staple them to the benches. This will serve 2 purposes, make the benches look nicer and cover them so they are clean.

You could get some cotton batting at a craft store, cut it to fit the benches and then staple the table cloths to the underside pulling the table cloth tight to creat your own cushions, but this may be more trouble than it's worth.

Cushions may move and fall and be more of a pain and then the rental fee...forget it!

I would just cover them!

Good luck!

Has anyone bought a table and chairs set from Big Lots?

becca

If so, do you have the item number or sku number???

It's a jungle themed set, with a giraffe on the table and monkeys on the chairs.
It's mostly light blue, yellow, orange, and green pastels.

where to get plastic folding chairs in nyc?

lalalala

those cheap grey ones... and possibly a plastic folding table (big enough for beer pong)?

Answer
Office Depot will deliver a set of 4 folding chairs for 44.99. I don't know what kind of table is needed for beer pong, but the cheapest folding table they have is 30 bucks.

OR, on Saturday or Sunday you can go to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, get the free shuttle to IKEA in Jersey and get the Jeff folding chairs for 9.99 each. You can stow them underneath the bus in the luggage bays to bring them home. They don't have folding tables there though.

Check with sporting goods/camping supply stores for the coleman table at the link below. It's not that expensive and nice and big.
