What are the economic impacts of a zebra mussel invation?

Answer
Raw water-dependent infrastructure, including electric power generation stations, drinking water treatment plants, industrial facilities, navigation lock and dam structures, and other facilities throughout much of the eastern half of North America, have been significantly impacted by zebra mussels. While the mussel's physical impacts upon infrastructure are well known, their economic impacts are less understood. This study, undertaken by New York Sea Grant and the National Zebra Mussel Information Clearinghouse, addressed the economic impact of the zebra mussel. throughout its North American range, as well as regions proximate to that range but not yet known to be infested.

Adult zebra mussels colonize all types of living and non-living surfaces including boats, water-intake pipes, buoys, docks, piers, plants, and slow moving animals such as native clams, crayfish, and turtles. They even attach to each other, ultimately forming dense layered colonies up to one foot thick. Mussel densities of over 1 million per square meter have been recorded in parts of Lake Erie. In 1989, the town of Monroe, MI lost its water supply for three days due to massive numbers of zebra mussels clogging the cityâs water-intake pipeline. Since then, water users such as power companies, steel plants, city water suppliers, and golf courses, have had to retool their water-intake systems or apply chemical treatment to prevent zebra mussel related problems. Swimming areas in Lake Erie have had increased costs associated with removing tons of mussel shell that wash up on beaches during storms. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates the potential economic impact to be in the billions of dollars over the next ten years to U.S. and Canadian water users within the Great Lakes region alone.
A detailed survey was mailed to a random sample totaling 766 infrastructure owners/operators throughout a 35 state /3 province range. From this mailing, 436 usable responses were received, a 56.92% return rate. Three hundred thirty nine facilities reported expending funds related to zebra mussel impacts (see Map). Information solicited included; facility type and location : source water body; degree of facility water use; types of zebra mussel-related impact mussel monitoring and control activities; and, 13 categories of zebra mussel-related annual costs from 1989 through 1995.

Three hundred thirty nine facilities reported total zebra mussel-related expenses of $69,070,780, with a minimum reported expenditure of $400, a maximum expenditure of $5,953,000, and a mean expenditure of $205,570 per facility (see Table and Figure 1). The big spender was nuclear power plants with a mean expenditure of $786,670 per facility, accounting for 26.2% of the total reported zebra mussel impact. Other major water user categories included; drinking water treatment facilities, with a mean expenditure of $214,360 (31.03% of total reported impact); fossil fuel electric generating facilities, with a mean expenditure of $145,620 per facility (16.02% of the total reported and, industrial facilities, with a mean expenditure of $167,030 per facility (8.46% of the total impacts; zebra reported impact). Total annual expenditures increased 1989($234,140) to 1995 (17,751,000) as the mussel's of North American range and the number of facilities affected increased.

What brands and features of power tools should I buy for my boyfriend for Christmas?

So far I've been looking at Sears and Home Depot for circular saws, table saws and sanders. We build our own custom furniture sporadically, but we've always borrowed tools so I think it's time we get our own. What features should I look for and is there one brand that is much better quality?

Answer
You can debate brand names for days and not get anywhere. There have been several brands mentioned repeatedly here, so take your pick. As far as features go: With a circular saw, it may be nice to have something that is light in weight with a higher amp motor for easy cutting. I personally use a Porter Cable Titanium saw . It's light, powerful and reasonably priced. With a sander: you want to think about what you will be sanding with it. Dust collection is something to look at when deciding on a sander. I also build custom furniture, but for a living, I have several sanders for several different jobs. A palm sander (the small round ones), a belt sander, for larger areas, and a bench mounted disc and belt combo (which is good for sanding the pieces before they are put together). I, (again my personal preference) is Bosch for sanders. Now with a table saw: there are alot more options to consider. A powerful motor, wide table area, ease of adjustments, quality fence locking system and outfeed supports are what I look at when buying a table saw. I do alot of my work in the customers home, so alot of my tools need to be somewhat portable. I recently purchased an HItachi 10" table saw from Lowes. It has a folding stand with wheels on it. It is capable of a 27" wide rip with a outfeed support in the rear. Also has a dust collector bag underneath it. Now you can spend alot of money on tools, but they are only as good as the person using them. You folks build furniture, so you've at least been around them for a while and have a clue. I worked for years with just hand power tools and built some intricate items. A good tool is supposed to make your job smoother and easier. I hope anything I've submitted has been of assistance. Good Luck with your purchases and with your 'partnership'. Have a great holiday.

What do you do if there's an earthquake?

Q. Okay, so I live on the California coast so we're always kind of wary of earthquakes. But I had never really paid much attention to them until just like a few days ago. I babysat for a woman who had all the necessary "survival" stuff or whatever in case of an earthquake, and I started thinking -- if there really was an earthquake, I would have no idea what do to.

In school they tell us to get under our desk and hold onto the legs. But I don't really see the point of that. I mean, wouldn't the desk be moving as well? And of course I've seen the scene in A Cinderella Story when Sam has to stand in the doorframe. But is there anything else to do?

So my question is this: how would you prepare for an earthquake? And what would you do during one? Where is the safest place?

Sorry if I sound paranoid. I'm not really a worrier or anything. I was just curious :D

Thank you!

Answer
Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it will be critical to have the right answer to that question somewhere in California sometime in the coming years.

Many people think having bottled water on hand is a good idea. That's true, as long as you have enough. Many are certain that standing in a doorway during the shaking is a good idea. That's false, unless you live in an unreinforced adode structure; otherwise, you're more likely to be hurt by the door swinging wildly in a doorway or trampled by people trying to hurry outside if you're in a public place.

How to be Prepared

Electricity, water, gas and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to fend for yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week.

You'll need food and water (a gallon a day per person); a first aid kit; a fire extinguisher suitable for all types of fires; flashlights; a portable radio; extra batteries, blankets, clothes, shoes and money (ATMs may not work); medication; an adjustable or pipe wrench to turn off gas or water, if necessary; baby and pet food; and an alternate cooking source (barbecue or camp stove). This list can also be applied to other disasters, such as floods or wildfires.

It's also a good idea to decide beforehand how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake and to conduct in-home practice drills. You might choose an out-of-the-area friend or relative that family members can call to check on you.

Securing water heaters, major appliances and tall, heavy furniture to prevent them from toppling are prudent steps. So, too, are storing hazardous or flammable liquids, heavy objects and breakables on low shelves or in secure cabinets.

Discuss earthquake insurance with your agent. Depending on your financial situation and the value of your home, it may be worthwhile.

During an Earthquake

If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you're in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator.

If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you.

During an earthquake of any size you should go and stand in a doorway, or if you are near a table hide under it to prevent falling objects from hitting your head. If you are near an exit to a building you should go and stand as far away as you can from any buildings.
take cover under a table, desk, or anything stable to keep up during the earthquake

If you're driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses. Try to get clear of trees, light posts, signs and power lines. When you resume driving, watch out for road hazards.

If you're in a mountainous area, beware of the potential for landslides. Likewise, if you're near the ocean, be aware that tsunamis are associated with large earthquakes. Get to high ground.

If you're in a crowded public place, avoid panicking and do not rush for the exit. Stay low and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms.

After an Earthquake

Check for fire or fire hazards. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve. If there's evidence of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box.

If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency. Likewise, avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles.

Be aware that items may fall out of cupboards or closets when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with a touch. Check for cracks and damage to the roof and foundation of your home.

Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right, generally follow large quakes.

If you leave home, leave a message telling friends and family your location.

What are the variables in this science experiment?

table bench height on Practical Power Limited (ASIA)
table bench height image

Lemony.xox

What are science variables? I only know what controlled variables are.

I have this experiment where we need to find out how tempreture effect the time it taken to dissolve a table spoon of jelly crystals.

I need to find the variables.

For the controlled variable i need 4 and i have three of them. What could be my last one.

I have:
The amount of water, the amount of Jelly Crystals, The flavour of Jelly Crystal,

What is a thrid one?

Answer
1)Amount of stirring. ( Must be the same each time )
2)Bowl in which the mixing is done. ( the same bowl each time )
3)Temperature of the surroundings. ( the surrounding temperature will influence heat flow into and out of the dissolving jelly. It must be kept constant for each reading. )

And your first 2 ( the most important ones). I'd suggest dropping the flavour of jelly crystal, and my number 3, unless you are going to give all 6 variables.
It is usually a good idea to give more variables than are asked for, but not to give wildly silly ones ( like time of day, or height of kitchen bench ....). I'm not sure about flavour if crystal - I would actually try out a couple and see if it really needs controlling for - that would show good thinking and keenness.

what material should be used for a work bench?

XX123

I'm building a work/hobby bench and am looking for some recommendations on what material I should consider that will provide a durable /low maintance top.

Answer
The top surface should be durable yet easy to use. If you sit down to work, the height should be the same as your kitchen table; about 30". If you stand up to work, I use 42" since I am tall, but if you are short (Height challenged) you may like something around 36" like your kitchen cabinet bases. I do jewelry avd stained glass. For jewelry, I sit and for stained glass, I stand. You might consider a combination bench with two heights.
I use white-painted homosote glued and screwed onto heavy plywood on a two by four frame for my bench tops. I paint my walls and ceilings white too. It increases your ability to see. If you need clarification, send me an e-mail.

Going to FL for 2 weeks in 19 days SO, was just wondering how much money I should bring. Going to Melbourne, Orlando, and Tampa. Let me add that we ARE going to Universal, Disney world and Busch Gardens as well as the halloween events at the parks. BUT all hotels and Tickets ARE paid for. The rest of the money I'm bringing is for GAS (12 hour drive), SOUVENIRS, FOOD, DRINKS, ETC. and it's just me and my fiance. Is around 2000 enough? Thanks in advance!

Answer
A 12 hour drive car trip (one way or all total?) is going to cost you a lot of money. Without knowing the fuel efficiency of your vehicle it's impossible to estimate. But it's easy to figure out. You also need to consider the gas it's going to cost you to drive around FLA for 19 days. Tampa is a long way from Melbourne Beach.

Food will cost you approx $60-$65 a day. $5 each for Breakfast, $8 each for Lunch and $20 for dinner if you want to eat well. You can cut that quite a bit by eating cheap or only eating twice a day.

Souvenirs, fun and other entertainment expenses will cost you about $50 a day but again, this is completely discretionary. You can spend more or less, it all depends on what you like, what you want and how much cash you have at your disposal.

So let's assume you'll fill up the tank every 4 days at $40 a tankful. Let's estimate high and say $250 for fuel.

Let's assume you enjoy fast food and you don't mind eating cheap, but you'll splurge at least twice with a nice white table cloth dinner. $1000 for food.

$50 a day for miscellaneous spending seem high but you'll go through it quicker than anticipated. Another $900 for daily cash spending on souvenirs and shopping.

250 gas
1000 food
900 misc
$2200

Your $2000 budget will probably get the job done but if you had $2500 you'd have more fun.

What is daily life like in New Zealand?

Sophia Mar

I am really interested in the idea of moving to New Zealand.I am wondering what daily life is like there?I am from Staten Island(New York City)so I am used to always having something to do.Will this be different in New Zealand? Will it be a big culture shock for me?Also, are American brands/items sold in New Zealand?

Answer
I immigrated to Auckland from the States so I have experience with the change in culture. I grew up in Boston and then lived a couple years in DC so I can compare city life in the US to city-life here. I never experienced any culture-shock and I don't know of any Americans who did. It seems to be tougher for the British immigrants I know to adjust.

Moving from most parts of NYC to NZ would be a major change, but Staten Island is not that different in density and population from Auckland. Auckland has 1.4 million people spread out over a large area. It has all the stuff you'd find in the US to do. There are malls everywhere, movie theatres, clubs and pubs, nice cafes and restaurants etc. On the surface it will seem just like the US. But here are the biggest changes you'll probably begin to notice within a a few weeks of living here:

Malls and other shops close very early, like 5 or 6PM, even on a Saturday. There are no family chain restaurants like Uno's, Bertucci's etc. that you find all over in the US. Restaurants are very expensive, in fact food in general is much more expensive than in the US and the portions will be half the size. People don't dress up unless it is a special occassion. It is perfectly acceptable to be barefoot in public places. If you arrive in winter you might think the kids you see barefoot at the supermarket or mall on a cold rainy day are poor; they aren't. They all have shoes, they just don't wear them. Kids are allowed to go barefoot to elementary school and adults regularly walk around shoeless as well and this is not seen as redneck or strange at all. At most cafes and less fancy restaurants you are expected to order and pay up front first. Service is very slow by US standards but no one rushes you to move on and free up the table. You do not tip anyone in NZ, not waiters, not taxis.

As far as things to do goes, that won't be an issue. Kiwis do go to bed early and shut the shops early but there are plenty of evening activities. I go to pub quizzes a couple nights a week. Drinking during the work-week is much more acceptable here. Most work-places have friday night drinks often right in the office. I'm a teacher and still can't believe our staffroom here has a fridge dedicated to booze for friday afternoons.

Everyone in NZ gets 4-weeks paid holiday by law, so there is much more holiday culture. There are lots of beach-side camp-grounds with rows of little cabins where families go for a week or two every summer. Most of the city shuts down from late December to start of Feb while everyone takes a vacation. It's all part of the more laid-back way of life.

If you move to a rural NZ town there would be some serious culture shock I'm sure, but no different to the shock you'd have moving to a small town in upstate NY. Wellington supposedly has more culture than other cities in NZ but the weather there is awful. Honestly it makes Seattle look good. It does have a real San Fran vibe to it but it is much smaller than what your used to.

I have a sore throat, what's the best way to cure it?

Q. I drink water, and i drank some honey tea whatever thingy, and it feels so sore. Hurts when i swallow. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it. I've had it for 3 days now.
Thank you so much :) God Bless You

Answer
Yes gargle with warm salty water but please ensure that the salt you use is pure celtic sea salt..... not the commercialised "nice white" table salt that has been processed with a ghastly amount of chemicals such as aluminium (to make it flow) and chlorine (to make it nice and white).. real sea salt is greyish or pinkish in color and you can get it from any good health food store for around $6.00AUD per 500gm bag.... it needs to be refridgerated to keep it fresh too.... simply put a teaspoon full into a glass of warm or room temperature water and stir up and gargle with it every couple of hours.

Also squeeze a fresh lemon into a mug and top with an inch of cold water and then fill with hot water and sip on that. Lemons are rich in vitamin C which is a powerfull antioxidant and will quell the pain dramatically. Have two mugs if you have to. Or ... if you're brave ..... slice a lemon into quarters and suck on each quarter (rinsing your mouth afterwards to protect the enamel on your teeth). ... Yum, I love lemons. Good for alkalising an acid tummy or quelling the pain from acid refux too.

Or squeeze fresh oranges and drink the juice. Only the fresh juice though, not the processed packaged highly refined loaded with nutritionally void processed sugar kind though. Avoid processed sugar while you're trying to recover as it will only leach precious minerals and nutrients from your system.... actually, avoid processed sugar anyway.

Another brilliant way to knock the wind out of a sore throat or cold or flu symptoms is to buy yourself some olive leaf extract from the health food store or pharmacy..... take Olive leaf Extract in a liquid form two or three times daily just before food..... 30ml each time..... works a treat for me.... and i use it for my grade school children too.... my eldest just went to camp and came back with a sore throat and very sore raw lips and mouth.... within 3 days of taking 30ml of olive leaf twice daily his symptoms have all but vanished.... buy the natural flavored variety as the flavored ones contain less concentration of the active ingredient oleuropein... Olive leaf extract has been used as a natural antiotiobic for thousand years, but is only recently that scientific research has shown that its active ingredient oleuropein, has the ability to fight a broad range of infective microorganisms.... Oleuropein has been found to be effective in fighting bacteria, fungi, yeasts, parasites and viruses in laboratory studies.

http://www.oliveleaf.co.nz/story.shtml

And drink lots of fresh filtered water to help flush out the germs and avoid milk and dairy as it is mucous producing.

bless

I need help in how can i plan my wedding in a year? Whats the first step?

Answer
You can have a BEAUTIFUL wedding on a budget and no one would be the wiser.

First of all, figure out what your budget will be for this reception and who will be footing the bill. Depending on who is paying, your parents and/or your fiance's parents may want to add to the guest list. If they're paying, the etiquette is that they can invite whomever they want to invite. If you and your fiance are paying then it's totally your decision who is invited. Once you know who is paying, you'll have a good idea of the budget and what venue and vendors you can afford.

GUEST LIST: This can be you biggest saver. Keeping your guest list small will cut your expenses immeasurably. Make a list for your side of the family and have your fiance make one too. Once you have an idea of the total number, you'll know how large of a space you'll need.

My second tip is DIY, DIY, DIY! There are so many items that you can diy for your wedding if you have time and it becomes so personalized. You can get your wedding party to help you too. You can create save-the-dates, invitations, aisle runner, guestbook, bouquet, boutineers, ring bearer pillow, pew markers, programs, menus, escort cards, table numbers, simple centerpieces, favors, etc. Check out theknot.com for ideas or google "DIY wedding."

CEREMONY: Low-cost places
the beach
public park (call and ask about any fees)

RECEPTION: Venue costs can vary. Our banquet room was $700 to rent. I've read of others being $1400 - $4,000. Costs can also

depend upon the day your reception is held. Saturday evening receptions are usually more expensive than daytime Saturday,

Friday, Sunday, or any other day during the week.

Low-cost places for reception:
- Community center
- Lodge
- College center
- American Legion Hall (I went to the one here for a dance recently and was shocked to discover how big it was and with an

all hardwood floor perfect for dancing.)
- Church reception room or fellowship hall (may not allow dancing)

CATERER: The cost of a caterer can vary. My venue offered catering for about $65 per person for a dinner buffet and an open bar. That was excellent. Some can be more expensive. Some can even be cheaper. Some venues will allow you to bring your own alcohol and this can reduce your cost. Tip: One friend of mine negotiated getting charged per drink instead of per person per hour for her alcoholic beverages. That also helped with the cost. Another option for drinks is to do just wine and beer or don't serve alcohol at all. I don't recommend a cash bar because that's considered tacky. They are your guests, so you don't want them paying for anything.

If you want to go the inexpensive route for food, you can have a brunch or lunch instead of dinner. Sit down meals can be more expensive than buffets or food stations. I prefer buffets/food stations because they are usually less expensive, the food is hot, and I like choices. Sometimes when a waiter brings you a meal at a sit-down, the meal can be cold. Tip: Another option is to just serve cocktails and appetizers around 6pm if that's what you can afford or you can just serve cake and punch around 3:00pm.

CAKE: Research and book a bakery or cake baker after attending a cake tasting. You can have a groom's cake if you want, but it isn't necessary. Some couples use Publix, Walmart, or Sam's Club for low cost wedding cakes. Tip: Some couples use a dummy layer in their cake to look good for photos and have a sheet cake in the back to serve. You can have a baker make a simple frosted cake for you and purchase parchment flowers, sugar paste flowers and/or shells, fresh flowers, or silk flowers, and decorate the cake simply yourself. Most of the cost is in the decorating.

FLOWERS: Buy flowers wholesale at a website like http://www.fiftyflowers.com to save money. They were mentioned in a recent theknot.com article.

GIFTS, DECORATIONS, FAVORS: Check for coupons before you purchase at sites like retailmenot.com BTW, favors are not necessary. Check http://www.efavormart.com for inexpensive table overlays and chair tiebacks that are cheaper than the cost of rentals.

You can create simple candle centerpieces by purchasing candles in bulk and glass containers at Michael's or other craft store's like that. Also check out this website: http://www.giftsforonegiftsforall.com... for inexpensive candelabras.

PHOTOGRAPHER: If you hire someone just starting out that person may just want more experience, and can give you a great deal.

Check out their portfolio first before you hire.

WEDDING PLANNER: Tip: If you hire an event planning student, that person may just want the experience as well.

WEDDING GOWN: Check David's Bridal for their frequent $99 gown sales or other savings. Check with designers for their trunk shows, go to a Filene's Basement Running of the Brides. You can order wedding gowns online, but be careful where you purchase it. You want to make sure that the quality is good.

BRIDESMAIDS: Yes, in the U.S. it is customary for bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses, shoes, hair, nails and makeup. A bride can pay for these or assist them if she can afford it. Check David's Bridal, ebay, or newportnews.com for dresses.

GROOMSMEN: It is also customary for groomsmen to rent their own tuxes and purchase their own shoes. TIP: if the men all have black suits, this can be a great saver for them. If it's a casual outdoor wedding, they can wear tan or khaki pants as well and guayabera shirts.

FLOWERGIRLS: Check Burlington Coat Factory for inexpensive dresses especially now after Easter. You can find many cute "Easter" dresses than can be used as flower girl dresses.

How do I start doing push ups? (PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING)?

benches that fold into tables on bench form of Unique Dinner Table that Can Changed Into Bench
benches that fold into tables image
Q. I'm really out of shape, but I want to get back into shape and lose weight this summer.
Only thing is, I can't do a push up to save my life.
I've tried and tried, but I barely get a inch off the ground before my arms fold under me like wet noodles.
How can I actually start doing push ups? And how can I improve my form and technique?
Any tips would be helpful :)

Answer
Many many ways to start a pushup.

You can do an inclined pushups, i.e. do a pushup on a bench while your feet are on the floor.
Or you can do it on the wall... no joke :P just build your arms a bit.

Then you can move on to knee pushups, knees down, feet crossed and do pushups.

Be sure to keep a proper form. Quality>Quantity
Back straight, no dipping of the lower back.
Go down till your chest nearly touches the ground/whatever you're pushing against.
Then push back up (NOT ALL THE WAY) and go back down.

Be sure to breathe!
Exhale when pushing, inhale when going down is the general rule, but if you're doing pushups slow then just breathe naturally as you would.

Good luuuuuuuck. :)
BTW I recommend the site 100-pushups (google it)
It gives you a table and all other things necessary to get to the 100 pushup goal

Looking for Opinions on Good Family Vehicles?

Q. I currently own a Dodge Avenger, but with two children, space is a little too tight. If anyone out there with 2 or more children can throw in their opinions on good vehicles, I'd appreciate it. I am active duty military, so affordability is also a very relative factor.

I am looking at Dodge, Ford, Chevy, or Jeep vehicles, so the ever so reliable Toyotas are out of the picture.

Where do the make up artists do the make up for an outdoor shoot?

camping table canopy on ... Accessories Tent Spares and Maintence Bell Tent Canopy Awning
camping table canopy image

Calliope V

I have no experience working with make up artists so I was wondering where does the makeup artist have to do the make up. I have sceduled 2 outdoors and one indoor shoot for next week in London.
Do I have to provide a house for the make up or will it be done outside?

p.s. This is a TFCD (Time for CD with the pics from the shoot) photoshoot.

Answer
Explain the details to the MUA (location and theme), and see what requirements they have. The MUA will do the makeup where ever you are shooting. For the outdoor shoots, having someplace flat for the MUA to set makeup and brushes would be nice. KEY NOTE: The more comfortable you can make them, the more willing they will be to work with you in the future, especially if you need them last minute (also applies to models). If you can, pick up a small "camping table" that has folding legs.

Everything below, I consider as an investment plus I tend to play "pack mule" and follow the addage of "It's better to have it and not need it, than not have it and need it". Besides MY gear, on outdoor shoots I also bring: a pop-up changing tent (it's a Trekker Fold-A-Privy) for outfit changes (it collapses to ~32"x2", like a reflector does), a camping table, a cooler (with rollers) with ice and water, and a small mirror (in my camera case), and if it's going to be a sunny day on a flat area I bring a 10'x10' instant up canopy (12"x12"x56" closed and the case has rollers). I manage to fit all this into my small car. The changing tent always gets the most compliments. If there are any sporting goods stores by you, check out their camping section. I picked up the changing tent for $40 USD, and the table for ~$20.

The canopy has come in handy for me on more than one occasion. The white top functions very well as a scrim (and as shelter for the sudden rain shower).

Place to go camping east coast?

maria mole

I am looking for a good place to go camping in the east coast, around north Carolina, Georgia.... Beautiful places, nature, waterfalls, etc.... Any suggestions?

Answer
I can't wait to go camping at *Edisto Beach State Park*. SC has some great state parks; we love them. And Edisto Island is my absolute favorite beach. It's quiet, uncrowded and clean, lots of shells and sand. Not tourist-y at all. The state park has beachfront improved camp sites (though they book up VERY fast) and another site across the main road under beautiful oaks with tent sites too. They have a great bike/hike trail (about 4 miles long I believe) that winds through the tree canopy and over the marsh.

We're also putting *Devils Fork State Park* on our list. http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/photo-gallery/default.aspx?ParkId=1355 The lake beach with the mountains in the background is beautiful and there are couple falls nearby. *Table Rock* is another popular state park. And we heard from a friend that *Huntington Island* is another great state beach park. This the state's most visited park and it has an historic lighthouse you can climb. They even have direct sewer hookup if you're going RVing. I've not been but she says it's much closer to "civilization" than Edisto, which is pretty secluded.

I love the Highlands area of NC, esp in summer. The temps are very cool, air is light, very pretty area. You might find some campgrounds around there, maybe near Franklin (Dillard, GA is close too). We camped a couple falls back in Brevard, NC, which has lots of area waterfalls. And the NC area around Boone is very pleasant, imo, though I'm not familiar with any specific campgrounds there. We try to stick with state, national and Corp parks because they seem to respect nature the most. So many private camps are becoming more asphalt and less shade - not my idea of camping.

Why do my friends dogs pee on everything and go crazy over my dog?

ellzyy

I HATE MY ROOMATES DOGS. There's a Doberman pincher and a mini pincher, THEY PISS ON EVERYTHING, I am beyond tired of this, why do they do it? They will piss on the damn wall, a chair, a door, a table, ANYTHING, then come back 5 minutes later, THEN PISS AGAIN. WHY???? I'm so tired of it, and it's ruining my friendship because the dogs' owner seems oblivious to it and lets them do it even though I call him on it.

Planning a very large backyard picnic, I need tables but don't want to buy or rent, any creative ideas?

outdoor bistro table on outdoor bistro table outdoor bistro tables for the patio
outdoor bistro table image

professor

I have 1 picnic table, 2 bistro's, 2 8x10 folding tables and a card table. I have plenty of chairs and benches. There may be about 60 people, so far I have seating for 30. I have asked people to bring lawn chairs and blankets because I am planning an outdoor movie night. The problem with rentals is the pick-up and return. Hope you can help!

Answer
Go to a "resale" shop and get some used flat doors for a couple of dollars each. With saw horses, these make really good "tables." Modern saw-horses fold for pretty compact storage. You can re-donate the doors if you have no other use for them. They also store pretty easily.

Plywood works, but be sure to get a thick enough grade that the sheet will be stiff supported only on the ends, or invest in a saw-horse to put in the middle, too.

Look around your home for options, too. What can you take outside for use? Take the drawers out of desks and chests of drawers, and cover with butcher paper or sheets for "table cloths." People can sit on an otoman. No law says you can't take actual furniture outside if the weather is good-- you might want to put "bags" on the legs of furniture to keep damp from the lawn out. These options require you have someone to help move furniture, though...that may be difficult to arrange if you are on your own..

Another option - your church might be able to lend you tables for a small donation, and they might even be able to help you with the pick-up and return.

How to make my small apartment porch less plain?

luvalwyz

I have a first floor apartment. The porch is small with a glass door. Which connects the porch to our living room. Other than that no windows. We are not aloud to plant flowers in the ground. Our porch is made of cement, and right in front of the cement is mulch and stepping stones to our porch. We have two plastic chairs, and a plastic table. I want our porch to be more inviting and less boring. What could I do?! We want this to be fairly cheap.

Answer
The plant idea and flowers is a good one. Maybe, if money allows, a little bistro set with wrought iron legs would look nice. A small colorful outdoor rug under the table and something like an outdoor butterfly candle holder on the table would warm it up. Maybe some small outdoor pillows for the chairs or cushions. Something unique like a large metal water can by the door with a plant or flowers in it. A hook with a hanging plant or chimes. A large pot with a tree in one corner. Just throwing ideas out there, hope it helped.

What are some very cheap wedding decorating ideas?

beach table decorations image

Purplefan

I do not really want a lot of money to be spent on decorations because I know the food is going to take up a fair amount. However, I enjoy decorating. I was thinking of different ways to use fake petals as decorations and mason jars. My colors are a bold yellow and darker blue like royal blue. Thank you for any suggestions.

Answer
I bought my bouquet from a florist but bought flowers to decorate the reception space from the grocery store because that was cheaper. I had a beach wedding so I filled mason jars with sand and put a tea light in them. You could do something similar and replace the sand with pebbles or marbles. I also used small metal heart confetti on the tables. U can buy it at the craft store. You could also use regular confetti which is pretty cheap. I found paper lanterns at a five dollars and below store. Depending on when your wedding is, you could decorate with wildflowers and foliage from outside. I also had a sheet cake from the grocery store as the wedding cake. It wasn't traditional but it tasted awesome and was only $75. Hope that gives you some ideas!

What would be good decor for a beach themed room?

cat & lamb

Anything: paint color, bed spreads, lighting, wall decoration, ect.

Answer
I think that a nice, sandy beige on the walls would be nice. Add pale blue accents with pillows and stuff. Shells and polished rocks are good decorative items(put them on picture frames maybe.) polished glass is nice mosaicced on a bedside table. White is another good color to add as a beach room in usually very light and airy feeling. I like round mirrors too, I guess they remind us of portholes in shipe. Beach towels are usually striped and could even be used as the material to make pillows. The possibilities are endless. good luck.

How do I start becoming a hobby carpenter?

Ray

I want to start learning to make outside furniture. Adirondack chairs, benches, tables, etc. If I am looking to start making these what do I need to know? What should I start building or doing to get me to where I can make these.. tools needed for this hobby, materials, basically anything you can tell me! Thanks!!

Answer
I would suggest that you head to your local library to look through the book and magazine offerings they have on wood working with an emphasis on outdoor furniture. Before getting down to specifics of actually building anything, review several designs and several sets of directions for several different types of items. As you go through several sets of directions, you should start to get a feel for identifying good directions, good drawings, and good instructions; not always will you find all three in all in the same place. Along the way you will also find general skill instructions; take notes as you see fit and, write down some type of reference so that you can find the general skill instructions you might want to revisit again. A general skill instruction would be something like how to finish/paint something, how to use a particular type of saw, etc...

After reviewing several sets of instructions, you will come to realize that you will need some type(s) of measuring tools, marking tools, hammer, screw driver, level(s), and saw. It is likely that you will want some type of powered drill with drill and screw bits. It is likely that you will want some type of skill or powered saw. A square of some type is most useful and often mitered corners are called for.

Start with simple projects that require fewer tools, skills, less precision, and less material.

I have antique brown furniture in my bedroom and I want to re-decorate and make it a beach cottage theme?

beach folding tables on Bits & Pieces: Unique beach chair
beach folding tables image

pinkinmv

I can change everything else, the head board the wall paint and decor but the furniture I cant change, the furniture is..... a make up table, a high boy cabinet with drawers, a wide dresser, another taller skinnier dresser, a desk that folds down to a desk and two end tables next to the bed. Any suggestions?

Answer
Go here and click on color visualizer: http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yourself/paint_colors/visualizer/
Now pick an interior bedroom scene with dark wood furniture. Write in the color Rainwashed and copy it onto the walls. The trim should be bright white as should the ceiling. Those are the perfect beach cottage colors. I've done several beach or cottage themed rooms with these colors and clients are in love with the room when they see it.
I agree with the indoor shutters on the windows or for a more polished look, white flowing sheers. Depending on your age, if you're a young person for a bedspread, something like this would be a choice of mine: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=118756&RN=31
If older, something more like: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=123300&RN=31
One or two nicely framed pictures, a smart trick is to go to art.com and get posters and then buy inexpensive white or dark wood frames from a local craft store. Here are my suggestions with this room: http://www.art.com/products/p12879155-sa-i2056282/fabrice-de-villeneuve-ocean-amaryllis.htm?sorig=cat&sorigid=0&dimvals=0&ui=a2a275e66cf24282b7d785b751a497fc and http://www.art.com/products/p10283309-sa-i1152391/carol-saxe-sea-breeze-i.htm?sorig=cat&sorigid=0&dimvals=0&ui=a2a275e66cf24282b7d785b751a497fc
Maybe a nice big shell set on a dresser or night stand. Not much more than that, you want to have the affect of uncluttered and breezy.

What colors are best for my humble patio furniture?

benches with tables on Bench table set - How to choose - Trendzona.com
benches with tables image
Q. I am moving into a home with a cute little side, covered patio. It is rectangular with several small trees on the side. Nothing special. Just some concrete and a wood cover. I currently own some nice deep green plastic chairs and a white bench with table. What colors would you recommend spray painting them? All the same color or separate? Dark wicker planters, stone planters, and a medium stone waterfall will be coming with me as well. Thank you!

Answer
Either match the green or beige, white shows dirt so much. If they are nice and pretty now then don't spray paint them until the need to have a nice little touch up to look new again. Does the wood cover need to be treated yet? If so, a nice red cedar finish with the other stuff painted to match would look good.

Where can I obtain lumber to repair a 1940's era redwood picnic table set?

Sharon F

This 1940's era redwood picnic table set was handed down to us and originally belonged to my husband's grandparents. It is not treated or stained. We need to replace the legs and braces because some pesky squirrels have been sharpening their little teeth on them. I want to use as close to original lumber as I can get but do not know where I can purchase it, or if it is even available anywhere. The separate benches and table top have been made from 2x's with 4 and 6 inch width boards and the braces and legs are 2x2 and 2x3. All of the boards are of the dimensions used in the 1940's, which by today's lumber dimension standards are probably not the same. Nor do I want treated or stained lumber. And I certainly do not want to use the set for kindling in the fireplace. Any ideas?

Answer
i have found roughsawn (not planed) 2 X redwood in LOWES.

it is unstained and untreated.

it will look very red until the weather gets at it for a while.

try craigslist (wanted used redwood lumber) you might get something already weathered.

Do restaurants usually have a place to store a bag while you work?

bench table hire on Themed Furniture Hire: Park Picnic Bench

FSBB

I just got hired at this fast-casual restaurant. I am a diabetic, so I try to carry a bag with all the stuff I may need.

Do most places usually have a place you can put your bag while you work, or is it best to just leave it at home?

Answer
It depends on the individual restaurant. My restaurant has a small break room with 1 long table and benches. There are about 30 small lockers against the back wall where employees can put their stuff. They are not assigned so anybody can use them. You have to bring your own lock for the locker if you want to secure your stuff. Not too many people use them so there are always some empty ones.

How can I get a designer to come to my house and help me redo my basement?

BB4

I'm not very creative, so I need help with ideas for my basement. I want to hire a personal designer, but I don't know where to do this, how much it costs, or how it works.

Answer
if there is a designer school in your area like Baker College, call and ask for a student about ready to graduate and see if they want to take on the project inexpensively.
When you go to a restaurant, or upscale grocery store, ask who designed it and call them.
What does your family like to do? If they are all men and boys, make it like a work shop theme with tool carts for end tables, brushed steel for furniture, and so on, or if they are into sports, use old lockers and give it a locker room feel with benches for the coffee table. If you have girls- do you want a garden theme with lattice walls? and a "secret garden" hiding spot?
My basement is a rec room with only a ping pong table, and laundry room- it is not a place to hang out.

How do I apply mosaic tiles/glass to a mesh table top?

outdoor tables on Wicker and rattan outdoor furniture -Summer Special!
outdoor tables image

angel_nurs

I bought a mesh outdoor table at an auction with the idea to
cover it with mosaic tiles/glass. Now--how do I do that??? I'm sure I will need something to apply the tiles to besides the mesh, but what, and how do I affix that to the mesh??? Thanx for your help!!
It is a round, steel mesh table top, the mesh is not fine. I do have a pattern in mind, and plan to use broken tiles/glass to make either a large sunshine or simple flowers with stems on the table--something spring/summer like. It will be used outdoors, under a covered porch. The top is flush with the edge, and I thought I would tile the edge, also.

Answer
Not so much a difficult task as a tedious one.

A few more details might help.

1. Is the mesh fine weave?
2. Is the mest top Flush with the rim around the edge?
3. Is the table round or...?
4. Do you have Tiles/glass/ a pattern in mind?
5. Is the substance of the mesh steel or aluminum?

You can approach this in a couple of ways.

You can cut a piece of concrete backer board to size; attach it to the table from underneath; with stainless fender washers and screws/ OR construction adhesive; then apply the tiles. If you used this method, it would also allow that you could possible work the pattern in your garage, or someplace out of the elements, then with someones aid, place the finished piece and attach still from underneath.

OR you can cover the mesh with something that just allows that the "THIN SET" mortar will not seep through the mesh;;; although for it to end up a stronger bond with the table itself, it might actually help if some mortar pushed into the mesh.

Depending on the pattern/ number of tiles/ placement/ you may not need a Wet saw or diag. grinder at all. That equates to what you do at the perimeter certainly. You might even consider PVC/ Vinyl lattice strip attached to the rim of the table, to border it, allowing a clean edge with the mortar. I'd probably work this job from the inside - out, to the perimeter. Once the edge area has been completed, remove the "Dam" smooth the edge with additional thin set,,, OR perhaps devise a method for applying edging tile all the way around the perimeter.

The Mortar: Any exterior grade Tile mortar will do, perhaps sold in your location in various brand names. Mixed to the consisteny of mashed potato, applied in small areas at a time, with a rectangular "toothed" trowel, or applicator; and tiles set in place. No offense but I can't imagine a mastik, or adhesive for this kind of tile work.

Hopefully you've either laid out a pattern, or have one in mind as you work along.

Interior applications for mosaic were/are, often done in plaster. This is not such a case.

Once set; then you can define the spaces with an appropriate grout, in some color that coordinates, or accents the pattern.

Steven Wolf

ADDITION: Depending on your thoughts, the design, the type of tile, and your feelings about aesthetics, you could apply enough mortar to create the situation where it becomes the "Grout" the seam filler.

Answer
i used to live in Michigan, not that long ago. Shelby is not exactly ON the lake, you'll have to drive there. There are quite nice beaches though it will be too cold by then to swim. You will not be far from Duck Lake which has a nice channel and sandy beach. The Hart-Montague Rails to Trails bike path is nearby -- nice and level and mostly paved, great for biking or roller blading. Muskegon nearby is kind of a crappy and depressing town (I'm allowed to say that since my parents used to live there and I worked there for a while) -- not much to do there and high crime in some areas. It does have some good beaches but they will be pretty deserted.
But Grand Haven to the south has cool nightlife and bars with live music. There is also an outfitter there you might be able to rent kayaks or stand up paddleboards from though perhaps not that late in the year. Farther south is Holland (which you should avoid -- strange vibes there, like the town in "Village of the Damned', all these blonde, Dutch, super religious people). But just south is Saugatuck which is a swinging little resort town with great restaurants. Suagatuck is also the only really gay-friendly area in West Michigan -- the rest of the region is a bit uptight and sanctimonious (expect to see a lot of bible quotes on billboards.) If you like to hike a little, the Saugatuck Dunes state park is a little north of town off highway 31. You park and then walk through the woods on a rolling trail for about 3/4 of a mile til you get to a spectacular wild beach bordered by dunegrass and trees. I've seen waves big enough to surf there in the Fall but you would need a wet suit since it is cold.
Farther south, the State Theater in Kalamazoo has a lot of good concerts (rock, country, jazz, etc.) with national names. So does Calvin College in Grand Rapids and prices are lower for tickets than in other parts of the country and they are never all that crowded. Also in Kalamazoo is Bell's Brewery which has a fun old brew pub with great beer. Lots of microbrew pubs all over Michigan if you like that sort of thing. Beer is cheap and plentiful in the Big Mitten. For groceries, the D and W chain around Grand Rapids has the best food (in store bakery has divine breads and they have a killer deli in house). There are always the huge Meijer stores, 24 hours like Walmart but nicer stuff and they treat their employees way better.
Grand Rapids is less than an hour drive east on I-96 and has pretty good nightlife now, especially in EastTown and the BOB (Big Old Building) near downtown. There is a decent little art museum and a bit north of town is the excellent Meijer Gardens botanical gardens and sculpture museum that is worth a visit. While in Grand Rapids, go to the Schuler Books store on 28th St (the main shopping highway that runs east west through town). Fantastic bookstore with a nice cafe with excellent lunch and brunch food. It was my home away from home when I lived in Grand Rapids and I would hang out for hours reading in the comfortable chairs or in a table near the gas fireplace. Sometimes they have live music or poetry reading in the back music room. Behind it on 29th street is a great Italian gourmet food and wine store, GB Russos. Other good restaurants there are the One Trick Pony on the Northeast side (gotta have the burger made with ground dried cherries in it) and Pietro's, on 28th st near the bookstore. Pick up a free copy of the bi-weekly entertainment newspaper "On the Town" when you are in Grand Rapids and it will list all local events on the art and music scene all over the area as well as movies. There are several large multiplex theaters, but the best is Studio 28 on 28th street which always has art or foreign films on one screen besides the usual Hollywood blockbusters.
If you are into gambling (I am not) there are casinos to the south and farther north and north central. If there is early enough snow you might be able to ski up towards Charlevoix at Boyne Mountain but that would be unusual. It's a pretty drive up to Traverse City -- lots of rich folk up there so the shopping and restaurants are good. Sleeping Bear Dunes is on the way up -- worth a stop and a hike to the top. Other towns along the lakeshore will be pretty empty after the Summer is done with many places closed up (Pentwater, Manistee, Ludington). Sort of an odd time to be vacationing in the state but I used to like early Fall there. The trees are pretty and biking and hiking were pleasant.

Summer trip to South Carolina. Any recommendations on where we should go in the state?

Is Clemson nice?
Want to go somewhere fun. 2 older teenagers and parents. maybe beach, be nice but not looking to go there in particular

Answer
I love Clemson, being an alum :), but as a vacation destination....hmm. During the summer (especially after college baseball season is over) it can be pretty dead there. The Botanical Gardens are beautiful all the time, of course, and there's cool stuff inside the gardens like a Geology museum. The campus is also gorgeous during the summer but, as mentioned, very very quiet. Nearby Clemson is plenty of really great outdoorsy stuff--waterfalls, whitewater rafting, hiking, camping, mountains, nice state parks (i particularly recommend Table Rock--nice area, a big lake with boat/paddleboat/kayak rentals available), Stumphouse Tunnel/Issaqueena Falls, etc. Also if you like golfing, Clemson University has an awesome golf course. So if you're looking to do some outdoors type stuff, Clemson's a good base of operations. Hotels there should be pretty cheap in the summer too (I particularly recommend the Martin Inn, the on-campus hotel). Clemson is hot in the summer and often humid, but compared to the rest of the state it's not too bad. And it cools off moderately well at night.

If you want to try the other part of the state, Charleston is a classic tourist destination. There are a zillion things to do here. Absolutely beautiful city with endless opportunities for cultural, architectural, historical, natural, military, and outdoorsy activities. Charleston is also in nearby proximity to oceans, swamps, and rivers. It is *the* tourist destination in the state and one of the country's most popular tourist stops. The biggest knocks on Charleston during the summer are the oppressive heat and humidity, and that any hotels close to downtown are going to be pricy.

Myrtle Beach is a popular tourist destination but in my opinion it's *too* touristy--practically everything there has sprung up in the last 20 years for the sole purpose of attracting visitors. So it can feel crowded (it has terrible traffic congestion problems) and fake. On the other hand there's lots of stuff to do, and it's very family-oriented. I also understand the restaurant scene there is great because there are SO many restaurants, so there's hardly ever a long wait to get in (except for some of the more popular local seafood places).

Good luck with your planning :)
