Looking for help putting together a waterfall theme wedding?

Lacey

Hey all, so my fiancée proposed to me at our favorite spot, a waterfall. So in light of that we have decided to do a waterfall theme wedding with blue silver and white. (The blue is the blue in a peacock feather) Now I am finding a lot in beach, but no thank you. I want waterfall. And I am planning on DIYing my wedding so that's not a problem. Would just like any tips, or site suggestions, you could give. Thank you so much!!

Answer
The best solution would be to have a wedding at a waterfall. If that isn't a possibility, you might add specific touches that are keeping with the theme. That sounds like what you want. But you may have to get creative on this, which you've probably discovered. (Like you said, for a beach theme, you can always bring in sand and sea shells, but you can't actually carry a waterfall.)

Turn your venue into a art piece that is reminiscent of a waterfall. Plenty of greenery and stones might help with the setting. Maybe a table-top waterfall fountain on the guest book table or at the entrance to help set the stage for the theme. http://www.shopping.com/Alpine-Alpine-WIN218-Tabletop-Waterfall-Fountain/prices

cascading blue flowers in your arrangements

Reception: White table clothes with a blue table runner that is curved a bit and allowed to hang off the tables on both sides. (Wish I could draw a picture of this.)

Bride's cake is white with a blue cascade of flowers down one side. http://amandascakes.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/aj117.jpg
or this golf themed cake without the golf http://media.cakecentral.com/gallery/631023/1286721830.jpg

or you could even do in white, but with a touch of waterfall http://palermobakery.com/wp-content/uploads/Pwc-10016a.jpg (elegant, but the waterfall theme is still very much there)

http://www.aboutwedding.tk/wp-content/plugins/wpcontent/images/468bb_wedding_cakes_with_waterfalls_3868510575_e852c55a1b.jpg

If any of these cakes are workable, then go from there with your decor. For example, if you use the cake with the white waterfall, you can use white table runners that are curved on top of the tables and allowed to fall off the sides of the white table cloth.

It wouldn't SCREAM waterfall, but the effect could be stunning.

napkins match the table runners, if possible
exotic flowers

sounds like fun.....enjoy planning

Autumn decoration suggestions?

Crazybird

Over the past year, we've decorated our apartment pretty beach-themed. Now that it's autumn (my favorite time of year), I'd like to add some autumn-y decorations, without horribly clashing with the bright blues and greens and artwork that's pictures of the beach and palm trees. I have a ton of decorations (little stuffed pumpkins, table cloths in oranges reds and yellows, leaf table runners ect...) Any suggestions on how to add those decorations in would be much appriciated!

Answer
Inspiration:

http://fineartamerica.com/images-medium/autumn-beach-toni-grote.jpg

The colors blend very well!

Use the colors in candles, throws and decorations

Brown rocks can be thrown in with a little orange pumpkin and tie an orange or auburn ribbon around a blue or white candle.

the artwork unfortunately will have to stay, but to avert eyes off of it, put a small table on the wall underneath if if you can, and make it an autum focal point with pumpkind, leaves and candles on a nice opaque plate

Add shimmer to help blend in the pillows and ribbons by using golden, orange or silver toned ribbon or pillows.

Incorporate natural wood and rustic textures to give a beachy feel as well, use a dark wooden bowl or plate to place your pumpkins, seashells and candles on.

Make a beach themed wreath using starfish, seagrass and fall colored leaves and acorns

fill an old seashell with orange spice scented candle wax

I'm looking for an eagle project, and i want it to be away from the usual. I don't want it to be planting a flower garden, painting a wall, building a fence, etc. Does anybody have any ideas that are unique? Please share your experiences of eagle projects you've participated in or have seen or observed. Thank you.

Camping in NJ Pine Barrens for the first time?

Christine

My mom and I are going camping in Bass River State Forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrens for the first time. It's a public campground with showers, flush toilets, and a fire ring and we'll be sleeping in a tent. We're only staying for one night, but since i've never done this before I was wondering what to bring and if there are any other important tips to keep in mind.

Answer
This time of year it is plenty hot enough not to require extra layers. Expect to sweat and try to wear synthetics that wick up moisture and dry quickly to stay cool. A change of underwear, a clean shirt and a fresh pair of socks and sock liners and a swimsuit should be all you need for spare clothes. Long sleeves/pants will help keep bugs off, but bring a pair of shorts to sleep in. Wear good hiking shoes or boots and don't forget thick socks with sock liners to help keep your feet cool and comfortable.

A basic sleeping bag and mat will be fine; you'll probably wind up sleeping on top of the bag in shorts and a t-shirt. A battery fan will be appreciated. Keep a clean campsite and do your cooking/eating away from your tent. Store all your food in your vehicle. Even with all this, raccoons will likely visit your campsite but will usually stay to the shadows away from people and the camp fire -- unless you have dropped scraps on the ground or haven't packed away your food. I have never seen or heard of bears being a problem in the pine barrens.

You will need a container to carry water from provided spigots to your site. The blue plastic ones sold at WalMart are fine. Check to see if your area has picnic tables, you might need to bring your own folding table and chairs. If you use the campground's picnic table, you'll want a plastic tablecloth or two (one for the table top, the other cut in half lengthwise for over the benches) and clips to keep them in place. Bring several kitchen-sized trash bags as you are required to pack out all your own trash. Bring your own stove and/or grill, or grate to put over the campfire, plus whatever cooking/eating containers and utensils you'll need. A lantern, flashlights and a small first aid kit are useful.

Get your supplies before setting-out from home or on your way, as supermarkets are quite far from the campgrounds. Use empty soda bottles filled 3/4 with water and frozen instead of bags of ice in your cooler: they last longer and don't leave your cooler full of water when they melt. Two coolers -- 1 for food and 1 for beverages -- are better than one. Remember: keep the food in your car to avoid animals. Note: alcoholic beverages are not permitted in state parks.

Bring your own dry/seasoned firewood. Chop kindling in advance or bring a hatchet. Cotton balls saturated in petroleum jelly make excellent tinder. Have a shovel and large bucket of water near the fire in case of accidents, and keep your tent far enough away that sparks and flying embers won't melt holes in the fabric. Camper courtesy is to clean-out the fire ring and leave a few sticks of firewood for the next camper (as well as completely cleaning-up all trash from your site before leaving).

Bring flip-flops or water shoes for the bathrooms, and obviously your own soap, shampoo and towel. Also, pull the cardboard tube out of 1/2 a roll of toilet paper, squash the paper flat and stick in a zip-lock bag. Carry the TP, a small hand trowel (shovel) and a second large zip-lock bag with you while hiking just in case the need suddenly strikes on the trail, or the bathrooms run out of TP.

Although you are not permitted to "swim" in any rivers or streams unless a lifeguard is present, you can legally wade in them to cool off. The water is stained a dark tea color due to tree sap and pig iron in the soil, but is actually quite clean (though should still be filtered, treated or boiled before drinking, except when drawn from a tap marked as drinking or potable water).

Biting flies, mosquitoes and other bugs will be in full force. Ticks are present year 'round. A cocktail of Avon's Skin So Soft and DEET will help keep them at bay. Wear a hat or a buff that's been treated with Permethrin to help keep bugs away from your face and sweat out of your eyes. And don't forget sun block and sunglasses. Leave make-up, hair products, etc at home -- the heat and humidity will cause these to run all over your face, making you look like Frankenstein, and the scent will attract bugs and animals.

When you stop at the ranger station to check-in, ask for any pamphlets, guides, maps to the area to plan your day's activities. Also get their phone numbers for emergency calls.

Why does broken glass "jump" and tinkle long after it has broken?

My outdoor dining table's glass just broke (we're still not sure if it was spontaneous or something caused it), but the glass continues to "jump around" and make a tinkling, crunchy sound. Is this normal? Does this mean it's active or dangerous in some way?

Answer
A glass table is made like a windshield, it has a plastic lament in it so when it shatters it just keeps on crumbling

How can I move house with my outdoor cats?

Alexia M

We have two cats that are about a year old. They are not allowed inside our house and simply spend their day in our garden and around the neighborhood. We are going to move in a few days, and we really don't know how to move them. A friend of us lent us a cage, but it's only the the size of a dining table and my cats really dont seem happy in it. If we took them one by one, and kept them in a cage outside for two or so weeks, would they run away as soon as we let them out?

Thanks
Alexia

Answer
Plan to keep them inside for at least a month after you move. If you can't do that, it would be best to find them new homes. Cats will not be happy in a cage for several weeks, and it is likely that they will run off as soon as you let them out.

Stop Playi

should i finish this or is it basically a pice of useless sh*t?

It was a beautiful evening. The sun was slowly melting into the white ribbons of clouds, and the rosy pink sky transforming it into something much darker. Sort of a marble blue sprinkled with powdered sugar stars. The moon was a bright crescent, and when its light hit my hair, it made it appear as though it was silk. Bright, fiery orange silk that is. My father would always tell me that I was a spitting image of my mother. We both possessed the wavy flame hair, the cucumber green eyes, the soft ivory skin, and the dark coal eyelashes. The funny thing was my face was free of freckles. I was glad about that though. I preferred my face spot free.
I was sitting in the park on my favorite bench. It was worn and weathered, the wood was gradually falling apart, and only one spot of the old white paint remained. Today was Wednesday, the last day of school before winter break. A thick blanket of snow embodied the damp evening earth, making the brown stems of grass vanish. The tree tops also wore the same heavy blanket of snow, making the tree trunks weak and limp. I shivered in my heavy winter coat, and wrapped it around me tighter. The cold had turned my cheeks a warm flushed pink, which boldly stood out on my pale face.
I checked my watch to find that it was almost nine oâ clock. My dad would be worried about me, and I thought it would be nice to get inside our warm oven of a house. I stood up from the bench and brushed some fallen snow off of my jeans. My hands were frozen inside my cream wool gloves, making it hard to move my fingers. The good thing was, I only lived three streets away and if I ran I could get there in about three minutes. I decided it was time to run. As I ran my throat instantly dried, making it feel cracked and uncomfortable. I tried swallowing as much as possible, but it wasnât enough. My nose felt so numb that it could fall off any second now. I placed one gloved hand over it to try to heat it up, but my hands were already icicles.
I turned the last street corner and immediately ran into my street, Bluebell drive. My house was the second on the left, number 206. I sprinted up the cracked concrete driveway towards the front door, heaving in iced air. As soon as I opened the sleek black front door a full blast of heat hit my face, slowly thawing it out. I removed my gloves (hoping to find all of my fingers were attached), set them down on the table next to the front door along with my student ID and numbly walked over to the lit fire place.
âEvangeline, is that you?â My dad called from the kitchen.
âYeah, itâs me dad,â I said chattering my teeth.
âHave you been outside this whole time? Itâs freezing out there!â he said as he walked into the family room, ending up right beside me.
âSorry. Yes yes yes, it wonât happen again.â
âWell, you seem to always say that yet you come inside like you have been put in a freezer for hours!â
âOk, well Iâm going upstairs. Good night,â I said stumbling to my feet as I headed towards the stairs. Even though I yearned for the heat of the fire, I didnât really feel like listening to a responsibility lecture right now.
âOk, see you tomorrow. Oh by the way, I want you to go talk to the Montgomery boy across the street. They have been here for almost a year now and you havenât even seen him! Itâs kind of rude of you.â
âBut dad, what if he is some kind of freak who thinks Iâm his friend and tries to start hanging out with me!â I whined now halfway upstairs.
âYou never know until you try Evangeline. Good night,â he said as he walked back into the kitchen. I rolled my eyes and groaned as I continued up the stairs to my room. My brother, Jack, was already asleep so I quietly opened my bedroom door and closed it as softly as I could. I quickly flicked the switch on the wall to the right of me, instantly infusing the room with a soft, luminous glow. I walked over to my open closet and dug through a bin of t-shirts and shorts. Numbly, I slipped out of my blue suede boots, my dark skinny jeans, my knee high army green socks, my white long sleeve shirt, my purple sweater, and my cream winter coat and put on an old Mickey Mouse t-shirt along with black biker shorts. I decided to slip my socks back on just in case I got cold, even though the house was burning up. For some reason I was exhausted, so I turned my light off, lied down on my bed, and immediately fell asleep.
*****
I woke up to the sounds of Jackâs toy trucks racing down the upstairs hallway. Sure, he was ten but he never seemed to get tired of those trucks.
âJack! keep it down!â I yelled from my room.
âDad says you need to get up anyways.â he said now in the doorway of my room holding a red truck in his left hand. âHe wants you to get ready and go to the Montgomeryâs.â he said walking away. I sighed and threw the covers off of me. The sun seeped through my closed curtain making small rays on the wood floor. I rub
it didn't even post it all! hold on....
I rubbed my eyes and stood up with a bit of a sway. My alarm clock read 9:32 in flashy red numbers. They seemed a little too flashy for my liking. I slowly walked over to my closet and took out a turquoise log sleeved shirt, a pink braided- strap dress, a hounds tooth sweater, some very thick black tights, and my winter coat. I prayed this would keep me warm today. The upstairs bathroom was unoccupied so I decided now was a good time to take a shower.
Once I was cleaned up and dressed I slipped on my black suede boots and headed downstairs. My dad was sitting on the couch watching a re- run of King of Queens, and eating a half empty bowl of cheerios. He waved goodbye once I told him I was heading out and went back to mindlessly staring at the television screen. I slipped on my heavy coat, opened the front door, and slowly walked to the end of my driveway. The Montgomeryâs house was across the street, one house down. It was a simple white two story house, with perfectly trimmed square
bushes along the front lawn. The windows had freshly painted black shutters, and window boxes that were overflowing with white jasmine. I stuffed my hands in my pockets as I made my way across the street to the pleasant little house to meet this unknown family.
I pressed the doorbell once I reached the front door and took a step back. I wondered how these people would react to just now meeting their neighbor. I had been invited over in the past, or asked to go visit, but I always seemed to find a way around it. Today I guess I wasnât so lucky. Plus, I had to face them sooner or later. In only a few seconds time the glossy red door opened revealing a pleasant looking woman holding an apple in her left hand.
âWell hello.â
âHi. Iâm Evangeline. I um, live right across the street.â
âOh, of course! Come on in sweetie,â she said opening the door more now to let me in. The house smelled of fresh flowers, and sweet red apples.
âThanks,â I said as I reluctantly stepped inside.
âYou know, I have always meant to come by but I have just been so busy. This is a lovely house you have by the way.â
âWell, thanks. We just finished up all of the remodeling about a week ago. You should have seen this place before. It was a disaster!â she rambled on as we walked into the family room. Her husband was sitting on the couch reading todayâs paper, and a boy who looked to be about my age was sitting at their dark wooden table reading a book.
âEvangeline, this is my husband, Tyce.â
âNice to meet youâ he said reaching his hand out to shake mine. His palm was rough with calluses and at least twice the size of mine.
âYou too.â I said with a kind smile. They seemed nice enough so far.
âAnd this is my son, Blair.â she said proudly gesturing over to him. It was almost as if she was showcasing her own son. Blair gracefully pushed himself up from the table, and walked over to meet me.
âItâs a pleasure.â he said with a gentle smile. I shook his hand, and examined him more as
well, whatever. there is too much to post anyways. thanks for the feedback.

Outdoor wood picnic tables/benches - how to refinish?

outdoor benches tables on Garden Furniture: Picnic Tables, Benches, Garden Chairs and Tables
outdoor benches tables image

Lepke

We have some outdoor wood picnic tables that are currently unfinished and kind of grayish from being outside for years. I would like to sand them then apply a clear polyurethane finish on them. Is that what I would use? Is there a special kind that I need? I've never done this before so any help would be great! By the way, I don't know if this matters, but the tables are in the sun pretty much all day. Thanks for your help.
If I just sand it instead of powerwashing it, will it also work?

Answer
You could clean them with a high pressure sprayer and then after it dries apply a couple of coats of spar varnish on them, that is what they use on boats and would hold up the best.

Can I varnish over old varnish on outdoor bench without stripping it?

Miriem

The picnic table set was left outside too long in bad weather. The top needs sanding before restaining and varnishing, but the benches are in pretty good shape. Can I just revarnish over the old varnish?

Answer
Yes but I suggest you give it a light sanding first, then wipe it down with white spirit before you apply fresh varnish.

Where are there camp sites with wolfs in it in Ontario?

Thatguy

So when I was a kid from 4 to 7 I remember going camping with my dad and some family from his side. I remember at night time we all walked down to the lake for some unknown reason and on the picnic table on the sand was a good 5-7 wolfs. I am now 20 and I want to go back to that same spot or another one with wolfs but I don't know the name or location of any.. I cant ask my dad because I don't talk to him anymore, since I was 14. Reason why I don't talk to him is I always lived with my mom but when I was 13 she started dating a crack head and 6-8 months later we were homeless, I tried to move with my dad but he turned me down and said I couldn't stay there... So he left his 14 year old son be homeless... But yeah does anyone know where a camp site is with wolfs near it? I love wolfs and I want to relive that moment again with my little girl who is 4.

Answer
Ontario is home to 2 different species of wolf: Gray and Eastern.

Algonquin Provincial Park, north of Toronto, also acts as a wildlife preserve for Eastern wolves.

Oh, I don't want no more of army life
Gee, ma, I want to go

Gee, ma, I want to go home!

How do you fix sagging boobs without surgery?

kids benches tables on value of school desks with ink well, value of school desks with ink ...

me

I'm 21. I have 3 kids. I have recently lost 30lbs and now I notice my boobs are a bit saggy. I am to young for my boobs to sag. I know exercise can help, but to what extent? Does it really lift them a noticable amount? and if so, what exercises?

Answer
WHAT YOU CAN DO

Other than visiting a plastic surgeon, the only thing that you can do to prevent your breasts from sagging (or firm up already slack breasts) is to build up the pectoral muscles under your breasts and fill the sag with muscle, says Dr. Price.

Here's how to give your breasts a lift.

Try the fly. "To build more muscle, try what's called the dumbbell fly, using a pair of one- to three-pound weights," says Peggy Norwood-Keating, director of fitness at Duke University Diet and Fitness Center in Durham, North Carolina.

To start, pick up one weight in each hand, then lie back on the floor. Extend your arms out at shoulder level on the floor with your palms up, clutching your weights. The weights should be parallel to your body.

Draw both arms straight up together above your body, keeping your elbows slightly bent, so that the weights meet over your chest, says Norwood-Keating. Then, return the weights out to your sides at shoulder height, as if you were drawing a semicircle or half-moon over your body.

Repeat the exercise 12 to 15 times, then rest for 1½ minutes, says Norwood-Keating. Repeat the exercise a second time and rest once again. Then repeat the exercise for a third and final set.

The stronger you become, the more weight you'll be able to handle. This means that you should be able to gradually increase your weight (by one to two pounds) while decreasing repetitions (8 to 10) in order to work your muscles gradually, says Norwood-Keating. Your goal here is 8 to 10 repetitions in three sets.

Try a chest press. A variation on the fly that also builds chest muscle is the chest press, says Norwood-Keating. This time, pick up a five-pound dumbbell in each hand and lie back on the floor. Extend your arms and hold the dumbbells up in the air over your chest, parallel to your body. Then, bend your elbows and lower the dumbbells toward your chest, with your elbows out to the sides at shoulder level. Extend your arms straight back up over your chest and repeat the exercise 12 to 15 times. Rest for 1½ minutes, then do a second set of 12 to 15 repetitions. Rest again and do a third set.

As with the previous exercise, if doing this exercise as described gets easy, increase your weights by one or two pounds. Your goal, says Norwood-Keating, is the same as above: 8 to 10 repetitions in three sets with as much weight as you can safely and comfortably handle.

Round out your workout. All these exercises may be great for your chest, but you need to round out your workout with an exercise that strengthens your back muscles, says Norwood-Keating. Otherwise, you're likely to become round-shouldered and weaken your back. So pick up a five- to ten-pound weight in your left hand, then lean on a bench or a low, sturdy table by placing your right knee and right hand down on its surface. Your left foot should be on the floor.

Bend your left elbow, bring the weight up to your armpit and try to squeeze your left shoulder blade toward your spine. As you resist gravity, slowly lower the weight back down until your arm is fully extended. It won't be easy, but resist letting the weight fall by squeezing with your left shoulder blade as the weight returns to the starting positon, explains Norwood-Keating.

Repeat the exercise 12 to 15 times, rest for 1½ minutes, then do a second set of 12 to 15 repetitions. Rest again and do a third set.

Don't forget sunscreen. Since sun exposure can speed up the aging of the elastin fibers that keep your skin from sagging, make sure that you wear a sunscreen whenever you wear a sundress, tank top or bathing suit with a low neckline, says Dr. Price.

Many dermatologists recommend a sun protection factor, or SPF, of 15, she adds. Whatever you use, don't forget to reapply regularly.

Wear a bra. To prevent your breasts from sagging further, wear a bra. "It does help," says Petra Schneider, M.D., a plastic surgeon in private practice in Melbourne, Florida. "Wearing a bra puts less stress on your ligaments. The more you wear one during the day, the more it helps."

Wearing a bra is especially important if you jog, play tennis, do aerobics or participate in other forms of exercise that bounce your breasts. If you're a C cup or larger, look for sports bras with good support that control your breast movement, says Dr. Price. Some women find that nonelastic shoulder straps are best for minimizing movement. Sports bras are available in the lingerie department of some department stores or in sporting goods stores.

I'm building a wooden picnic table. What power tool rounds off the bench edges the best?

pancake

Don't want the square edges because it's a kids picnic table. What's the best method/tool that will round off these edges? Thank you.

Answer
Router with a round-over bit for the flat-to-flat sides. If you are talking about putting a radius on the corners, a sabre saw.

Going back to Maui for the 2nd time and I'd like to take a day trip by ferry to either Molokai or Lanai. Which island is a better choice to visit and why?

Answer
Those two islands are very different! Both of them have very small populations--neither island has more than one public high school. Transportation to both of them is a little tricky. You'll need to ride either a prop plane or a ferry to get to either one. The ferry ride to Lanai is shorter, cheaper, and smoother if that makes a difference to you.

You start to see the difference when you fly into the airports. LNY is small, but air conditioned and modern. You have to walk down steps when you deplane in either airport, but at MKK, the gate you walk through is literally a chain-link gate. Molokai's airport terminal is little more than a shed, about the length of a high school gym, with four signs hanging on the side: baggage claim, check in, snack bar, and air freight. Plenty of people walk right past the baggage claim on Molokai, maybe because it's a wide concrete bench, maybe because there are usually people sitting on it.

98% of Lanai is owned by a company called Castle & Cooke. There are two luxury resorts, and almost everybody lives in a small village in the center of the island, all neat and quaint with cute boutiques and cafes. Most of the population of the island is of Filipino descent. The local school benefits from corporate sponsorship when companies like Nike hold executive retreats there. When Bill Gates wanted to get married in a private ceremony, he simply paid for every hotel room on Lanai, and every commercial plane ticket in or out that weekend.

Several miles away on Molokai, more than half the total population is of Native Hawaiian descent, and more than three quarters of the schoolkids. The largest tourist attraction is what they used to call a leper colony. A couple dozen Hansen's Disease patients still live on the Kalaupapa penninsula, at the bottom of a thousand foot cliff. Visits to Kalaupapa are tightly controlled, unless you have a sponsor who lives down there.

On "Topside" Molokai, several activist families work hard to chase away anything that looks like mass tourism or overdevelopment--cruise ships for example. Because of their opposition to a proposed luxury residential development that would leave a footprint bigger than the island's largest town, the largest employer on the island shut down the 18-hole golf course, the only movie theater, the hotel with the island's only elevator, and a popular restaurant and bar in 2008. Many of the island's residents make their living through a combination of farming, hunting, fishing, and bartering, and they raise their children to be proud they can live off the land.

There is only one hotel on the island, but when you are in the restaurant, looking out to sea, hearing local characters like Uncle Mel and Larry laugh and joke at the bar, watching somebody's auntie get up and dance hula to live music, it seems that the buildings of the Hotel Molokai are the only buildings in the world.

Meanwhile, up the hill, among the picnic tables outside the Kualapuu Cookhouse, it's Thursday night: prime rib night. Local folks who still have grease stains on their shirts from work have brought ukuleles and a washtub bass to play music just because they enjoy it. They've convinced Bruiser to come out of the kitchen and sing a Bruddah Iz song. You'll have to pop across the street to the market to buy a bottle of wine, but the food is fantastic!

Which island you prefer will be up to your personal preferences, but visiting either place takes careful planning. Transportation to either island is so limited that a high school sports tournament could prevent you from getting a ticket if you don't make reservations ahead of time.

Answer
hope this helps

Weight loss tip 1: Decide how much weight you need to lose - Most people start their weight loss journey by claiming to be xyz kilos overweight. This isn't a healthy way to project or aim for weight loss. Calculate your desired weight against your height by using reliable methods like the BMI, and set a healthy weight loss target. This is often half the battle won.

Weight loss tip 2: Time management - This is quite often overlooked. Decide which part of your day will be dedicated to exercise, when in the week you will stock up on groceries, and when you will do the cooking - all within your current work and home life routine. If you don't do this now, your days will be rushed and unplanned, and you won't be able to sustain your weight loss efforts.

Weight loss tip 3: Stock your kitchen - Keep your house well-stocked with fruits, vegetables, healthy meats, grains, cereals, spices, and flavourers. Follow our tricks to healthy cooking, cooking vegetables for the week, and low-fat cooking posts to understand how best you can stock your kitchen with healthy and delicious ingredients. All of this will go into helping the next step - cooking healthy meals at home.

Weight loss tip 4: Eat healthy homecooked meals - Whether it's you who's cooking, a family member, or house help, ensure that every one practises healthy cooking methods, and ingredients. Ask any person who's lost weight the healthy way, and you will always hear about how healthy homecooked meals were a big reason behind it. Use less oil, low salt, fresh produce, and you'll start seeing results in no time.

Weight loss tip 5 : Start a cardio + weights workout - A healthy weight loss programme is incomplete without a good exercise routine, and weight training mixed with cardio is the best way to lose weight. Of course, variations and forms exist, but any workout that stresses on muscle tone and increased heart rate will always help you lose weight and keep it off. You can either start a home workout today, or rely on gyms for fitness training.

Weight loss tip 6: Alter your snacking habits . Set those French fries aside, skip that aerated drink, and ban those unhealthy deep fried samosas. Explore the healthy snack world and you will find several appetisers, party snacks, movie snacks and meal accompaniments that'll satisfy every craving of yours.

Weight loss tip 7: Have at least one active hobby - It isn't sufficient to rely on just 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Moving from bed to office chair, and back to bed, isn't a healthy way to live. Buy a motion sensor gaming console that lets you enjoy social games with friends and family, plan weekend trips, clean your house once a week, dance, play sports, the list is endless. Get out of the coffee shop and dining table rut, and you'll have fun along with the healthy weight loss

Weight loss tip 9: Drink plenty of water - You've known that your body relies heavily on water for all important bodily functions, and yet you skimp on drinking adequate quantities of water every day. Well, it's time to stop that. Check out some exciting ways to make water interesting and you'll be packing it away in no time. Do not forget to carry a water bottle to your workout, and take a few sips after every 2-3 minutes of exercise.

Weight loss tip 10: Plan healthy vacations - Why go all the way with healthy weight loss, when one tiny vacation will just come along and topple it all? Healthy vacations aren't impossible. Take a look at how you can eat smart on a holiday, and then at bodyweight workouts that you can carry with you wherever you go, to understand how to holiday right. Above all, remember that these are lifelong habits that'll help you stay fit forever and not short term weight loss quickfixes

good luck.

Q. Let's say I want to be a vagabond. Forget everything, live a life away from civilization. Or actually travel Europe, Africa, dunno. Europe would be more maintainable. So Europe.

I was wondering, what do itinerants (preferably female) do to sustain themselves financially? Where do they sleep? Go?

Details, details.

Answer
In the western world there are always under the table off the books type of jobs.

For girls (with big boobies) it is often bar work. You can pick up a bit here and a bit there.

Also for girl (with big boobies), having to pay for drinks and meals is often optional, but if you hang out with guy vagabonds you may have to pick up the tab for them.

In Australia, Canada and the US there are plenty of places you can camp (into the wild style). Also there are plenty of hippie types who will help you. but as a girl you are vulnerable to more than just theft, so you have to be careful.

Writing is a good way to live a vagabond lifestyle. Travel the world with a camera and laptop and write about what you see. Also photographers can sell their photographs, usually through a pool (where newspapers can pick up the photos if they want).

Backpacker hotels can be pretty cheap, in vietnam you might be paying $2 a night for a bed in a dorm. Then if you live in a local village you might pay that for a bed plus dinner and break fast (I paid less than a dollar in southern china for a room, dinner and breakfast in a small minority culture village.) But my shower involved swimming in the local creek (very clean because I went swimming before the farmers brought their water buffalo down to the creek).

You can work all sorts of jobs. Attendant on a luxury yatch. Also vagabounds can make friends with circuses, artists, musicians and gypsies and travel with them (be careful in Romania is a gypsy man holds you prisoner for 2 days you are legally married).

In Asia (I am not sure about Africa) opportunities are more limited. Yes, there is bar and hotel work, but not legal. Most people are doing English teaching, but for that you need a university degree to do it legally.

In western countries the best way to make money is busking. In Sydney I have met buskers from all over the world, including opera singers from italy, harp players from Mexico and jugglers from Canada.

Buenos Aires
Cero Consecuencia, Cabrera 3769, Palermo , Tue- Sun from 14 hs. Email: ceroconsecuencia@hotmail.com A new cultural pub in Palermo. This bar is popular by very young gay guys.
Bulnes Class, Bulnes 1250, Palermo Tel # 4861-7492. Thur After Office at 19 hs, Fri and Sat after 23 hs. Trendy Gay Lounge & Bar located half o block from Cordoba Avenue. The bar opened last year, and it became very popular. This place is nicer, bigger and has better music than other bars, but I prefered it when it wasn't so packed and you didn't have to make a big line to get in.
ALSINA Alsina 940, Monserrat (Fri from 2 - 6 AM Sun 10 PM to 3 AM) This new nightclub takes place in Alsina Palace, a very elegant 3 stories XIX century commercial building. This place that used to held Palacio Buenos Aires every weekend, reopened under a new name and management, and continuous with the same popularity. This location has been while it was Palacio the best gay night club in town. Don't miss Palacio Tea Dance on Sundays after 11 PM.
AMERIK Gascon 1040 (Thur, Fri, Sat & Sun from 1-6 AM) Phone #: 4865-4416. Amerik is the biggest and wildest gay disco in Buenos Aires, and is a bizarre experience. Very mixed public (many straights looking for easy girls, and free drinks), has a wild semi-dark room on the first floor. Has two dance floors, and capacity for almost 2000 people, the main dance floor with tecno music, a small glass isonorized dancefloor which view to the main dance floor where they play 90´s hits and latin music. Two bars. On Fridays and Saturdays there is "canilla libre" (free drinks) it's a sort of all you can drink for the $30 cover. Advice, I do not recommend to drink anything but beer, or water from the "canilla libre" bar. You have a VIP bar on the first floor to the right (opposite to the dark room) where you can buy good booze (ask where it is). You can print your e-flyers from the website. It is recommended to arrive before 2 AM to avoid the big lines. Cover Thur & Sun $10 (includes 1 drink), Fri & Sat $30 (Free Drinks). Updates: Amerik will reopen on Friday December 22 after being closed for several months because of neighbors noise complaints.
PACHA B.A.: Clubland Av. Francisco Beiró 4267 Phone # 4788 4280 (Sat 1-7 AM) It's not a gay disco, but Saturdays are very gay friendly. If you like raves, creamfields, and electronic music, it is definitely your place. Visiting Top DJ`s. Resident DJ`s: M. Cattaneo, C. Alfonsin, Suker, H Garcìa, Big Fabio, Spitfire, C. Paz, J Paul. You have e-flyers, you can buy also anticipated tickets (TICKETEK - Phone#: (54 11) 5237 7200)
GLAM Cabrera 3046 Has one dance floor, two bars a dark room and a patio. What to say about Glam... Too many gays, or so little space! The place can get anoyingly crowded sometimes. In summer it can be a little sweaty also. I have to be drunk to bear people pushing me, and walking over my foot, but you will find plenty of 20's to 30's cute guys. If you are in the mood go for it, it's a fun place for Thursdays and Saturdays. Cover $ 25 that includes one drink.
The Sub Cordoba 543, Nuevo Bajo, Downtown. Sat after 2. This is a new club that organizes gay parties. You have to visit their website and submit your (and your friends) complete name and email to be included in every Saturday list. The cover is $20 with flyer or list, and $ 25 without and includes free drinks all night.
Brandon Gay Day - Brandon Gay Day is a circuit party organized by film and arts students. These parties reunite -approximately twice a month- a mix of young alternative, trendy, and a few so called filmmakers. You can check in their website where the next Party will take place and print the E-flyers. Last News: Brandon Gay Day is being held twice a month in "el teatro" Av. Federico Lacroze and Av. Alvarez Thomas after 01:00 AM.
Eyeliner Party. Eyeliner advertises itself as a non-commercial electro-clash queerpunk party for faggots, dikes, transvestites, other freaks, and for anyone tired a World that is straight by definition. For people who want to meet people, or just dance, kiss each other in peace, where there is no place for snobbery, frivolity or absurd. You can check photos of previous parties. There is one party each month, but the organizers held other events. Next Party will be held on September 30, 2005, in Teatro Arlequines, Venezuela 1110 after 12 PM
Angel's Disco, Viamonte 2168, Recoleta. Open Thu. - Sat. from 1:30 am. This lower keyed club has two dance-floors and a dark-room. Zipper's features resident DJ's, two well stocked bars, a slammin' dance floor and a game room with billiards, darts and pinball. http://www.detroit.com/nightlife/gay-bars.html

Dublin â this is the only large, exclusively gay night spot in Dublin. The George89 South Great George's St.
T: 478 2983This 'superpub' is a veritable institution on the Dublin scene, and one of the few specifically gay pub/clubs in the city. Open 'til 3am Wed-Sun. Wed: Space'N'Veda - alternative performance show followed by dance hits; Thu: Missing Link - quiz show followed by great retro hits; Fri/Sat: frenetic and, dare we say it, tired; Sun: Bingo (always fun, more relaxed and touristy) - followed by cabaret and great dance/retro music. Hits the end-of-weekend spot. More details

Propaganda is a place I have been before; it is still the only 100% gay
pub and disco in HK (others have only 1 gay night or so) and because of
it it is quite expensive especially after 10.30pm on Fri and Sat nights;
better be there early (start from 9.30pm) to enjoy the cheaper drinks
during happy hours; I went there before the Dragon Boat Festival and it
charged $100 for the entrance fee (included a drink) and I found it very
unacceptable (the notice on the entrance counter for that fee was newly
posted and it did appear beforehand). What can we do, there is no place
to be a subtitute for it (very good for cruising :))???

Madrid â I have to admit, I know very little about Madrid, but I have heard it is much friendlier than BarcelonaLate
CRASH, Pl del Callao, 4 (Callao/Gran Vía). Thurs, midnight-6am. The scene is moving on in Madrid, and these days tech-house and its close cousins just don't cut it. Enter Crash then, Tripfamily's new replacement for the (lately empty) Cream. The Replicant (Star Whores Records), Smart (Ocho y Medio resident) and Ãlvaro Cabana (new resident of Rubble Action) spin a mix-up fix-up of electro, disco, pop, new wave with punk and rock thrown in for good measure.
RUBBLE ACTION, Sala Stella, c/Arlaban 7 (Sevilla). Sat, 1am-7am. The new face of Saturdays in Sala Stella got off to a good start last month. An 80s throwback crowd enjoys this cutting-edge club, whose musical remit is simply electronic music, bringing a diversity of styles that is a welcome breath of fresh air in what was becoming a slightly jaded scene.
SPACE ES SPACE, Pl Estación de Chamartín (Chamartín). Sun, midnight-6am. Well, it had to happen sometime. After nine years of midday madness, Space has grown up a bit and moved to a proper nightclub slot. It won't be as fun as spending all day Sunday mashed up, but it'll come pretty close.
PINK FLAMINGO, c/Mesonero Romanos, 13, esq Gran Vía, 35 (Callao/Gran Vía). Thurs, midnight-6am. www.tripfamily.com. A predominantly gay crowd generates a great atmosphere in this small, cosy venue.
COPPELIA, Pl de los Mostenses, 11 (Callao). Fri-Sat, 12:30-6am. If electro is the sound of now, then Coppelia is the place to check it out in. Miguel Mendoza is the front-room resident with the back room dedicated to house and drum'n'bass.
DEEP at Sala Divino, Pº Hermita del Santo, 48 (inside shopping centre), (Puerta del Angel). Fri, midnight-8:30am. Still the biggest night in town, the guest DJs say it all: Carl Cox, John Digweed, Roger Sanchez, François Kervorkian . . . it's like a who's who of the cream of dance music.
MONDO, Sala Stella, c/Arlaban, 7 (Sevilla). Thurs, midnight-6am. Nights of funk and electronica on Thursdays, when the Mondo crew take over Sala Stella. Enjoy the great crowd and that naughty feeling of being out all night on a Thursday.
THE ROOM at Sala Stella (see above). Friday, midnight-6am. Jazzy, future house from the record box of Ãngel García in this long running club night. NB -- now only Friday nights.
OHM, Pl del Callao, 4 (Callao/Gran Vía). Fri-Sat, midnight-6am. www.tripfamily.com. Resident DJs Tetsu and Kike Boy. What was once a mainly gay affair is in danger of becoming a bit too hetero for its own good. Trouble is, itâs just too fun a night not to draw a big crowd.
SUNFLOWERS at Cool on Thursdays, c/Isabel Católica, 6 (Santo Domingo), Maximes on Fridays, Ronda de Toledo, 1 (Pta de Toledo) & Macumba on Saturdays (Pl Estación de Chamartín, s/n). Midnight-6am in all venues. It speaks volumes about the current lack of imagination in some quarters of Madrid clubland that this terrible night now takes up three precious slots in three of the city's major venues. A pijo crowd tries to groove to commercial dance music in bad outfits. It's only in this guide so you know to give it a miss.

Editorial Review
St. Paul gay bar with live music, dancing and karaoke that's popular with all sexual orientations.
I think this is the only large Queer bar in the Twin Cities now that Trikkx is closed.

Monte VideoDonât bother going out before midnight unless youâre looking for some alone time. MUCH more friendly than Buenos Aires.

Espejismos Jackson 872 (Near Junction of Laura Muller) Longest running gay nightclub in Montevideo gets busy from midnight onwards. Mostly gay with some lesbians. The music is quite mixed with lots of Salsa and techo sounds. They also have shows and strippers.

Cain Cerro Largo 1833 (Near junction of Arenal Grande) Montevideos biggest gay club on three floors with 2 dance floors, 3 bars plus dark room area. Downstairs is techno and western music and upstairs is Latin. From 11pm onwards. Shows, strippers and go-go dancers. Recommended.

Milenio Junction of 25 de Mayo and Ciudadela. This club is not officially gay though popular amongst gays nevertheless because of the good music and shows.

Ibiza Junction of Rondeau and Uruguay. Cruise bar with dark room open Thursday to Sunday 1am to 7am. Also has a lot of drag queens.

Another Propaganda but we forgive them since this is Moscow and theyâre the past masters of the dark art. A laid back clubby bar that attracts middle class Russians and moneyed ex-pats plus local and foreign students into techno and acid jazz. Thursday is a big night and gets predictably packed but it shouldnât stop you topping up on lemon vodka and chatting up that Anna Kournikova lookalike by the bar. Believe the Propaganda!
New YorkYou can find a million bars in NYC. My favorite use to be The Monster, 80 Grove St., 924.3557 because of all of the Puerto Rican gay boys, but now I hear itâs mostly an older crowd. ï It would be helpful if I knew what part of Manhattan or which burg.

Washington DCApex
1415 22nd St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.296.0505
This quintessential gay club, unassumingly tucked in between in apartment buildings in Dupont Circle, is a popular hangout for dancing kings and queens. The front room's large dance floor and blaring soundtrack is a main draw for booty shakers and the backroom video bar, which plays hit music videos on multiple wall-mounted TVs, is a favorite among well-toned wallflowers. Thursday is the wildly popular College Night (free admission with a valid college ID), Friday features karaoke hosted by drag diva Gladys Kravitz and Saturday is the weekly Liquid Ladies party, where lesbians rule the roost. (AN)

Club Chaos
1603 17th St. NW Washington DC; Tel. 202.232.4141
A mixed gay and lesbian crowd floods this DuPont Circle bar and restaurant where drag shows are so popular, they've even extended them to Sunday morning brunch. Special women and Latin nights happen weekly so be sure to call ahead to find out what Chaos is serving. (MS)

Cobalt
1639 R St. NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.462.6569
Cobalt is the proven leader of the pack when it comes to Dupont Circle nightlife. The dance destination, which was closed by fire in 1998, reopened several years ago to rave reviews by trendy 20- and 30-somethings. Every Sunday night is karaoke with two-for-one martinis. Swing by for some retro tunes on Solid Gold Tuesdays or check out the popular Best Package Contest on Thursdays, hosted by the always outrageous Lena Lett. Customers are encouraged to step up and take it off for the chance to win a $200 first prize. For a slower-paced evening, grab a drink downstairs at the 30 Degrees lounge or nosh on some honest fare at FoodBarDC. (AN)

DC Eagle
639 New York Ave., NW Washington DC; Tel. 202.347.6025
Beware of leather-clad congressmen bearing watches. Almost every city has an 'Eagle', but DC's leather bar is a standout in the crowd. Hot, sweaty and very cruisy. No bales of hay, but plenty of cowboys and come-ons. (MS)

DIK Bar
1637 17th St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.328.0100
Whether you know it as DIK Bar (above Dupont Italian Kitchen) or Windows, this Dupont Circle mainstay is a folksy favorite. Mismatched, tattered couches and arm chairs as well as tables and a line of barstools give patrons plenty of opportunities to socialize and circulate. It's also one of the best destinations on the block to watch the annual drag queen high heel race down 17th Street. (AN)

Duplex Diner
2004 18th St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.265.7828
If it's Thursday evening, those in-the-know will be at Duplex Diner. While this cozy, kitschy restaurant and bar is popular most nights of the week with the sociable, see-and-be-seen set, Thursdays are the jewel in Duplex's crown. Start out in the retro dining room with a basket of pigs in a blanket or tater tots. Try the locally famous Mac & Cheese or a fresh, delicious broccolini salad, served by one of several perky servers. Then, migrate to the bar for reasonably priced cocktails and copious conversation. Duplex's welcoming atmosphere draws a diverse mix of attractive, easygoing patrons. It's the ideal clean, comfortable neighborhood joint. (AN)

Floriana Mercury Grill
1602 17th St., Washington, DC; Tel. 202.667.5937
Floriana's conventional fine-dining on the main level of this historic Dupont Circle manor couldn't be a more drastic departure from the restaurant's basement bar. The pint-sized, ruby-walled tavern is replete with neighborhood regulars but strangers are welcomed with open arms. Patrons are predominantly gay but plenty of fun-loving heterosexuals grab a drink here too. The only prerequisites for fitting in are being chatty and casual. The space consists of a small bar, a few stools and a countertop that runs the length of the outside wall so the spot can get cramped quickly on a busy night. Bartender Dito mixes a mean drink (his sangria is scrumptious) and fiery proprietor Floriana will make you feel right at home, in between cigarette puffs and dirty jokes. (AN)

Green Lantern
1335 Green Court, NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.347.4533
At the Green Lantern, taking it off pays off with complimentary cocktails. On Thursdays, shirtless men drink free from 10-11 p.m. and men in underwear drink for free from midnight to 1 a.m. Various happy hour specials occur throughout the week starting at 4 p.m. This low-profile bar features pool tables, videogames and karaoke. The second floor, known as the Tool Shed, has its own distinct vibe and it caters to more rugged bearish types. (AN)

Halo
1435 P St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.797.9730
When sleek, swanky smoke-free Halo opened its doors near Logan Circle in 2004, it was the antidote to dark, murky gay bars. The well-lit, expertly decorated establishment, operated by illustrious Washington party promoters Ed Bailey and John Guggenmos, has exceeded expectations. To accommodate the throngs of au courant clientele that flock there nightly, the former second story bar expanded, taking over a video rental store below. The larger space still fills to capacity on weekends so don't be surprised to see a short line forming outside at peak partying hours. Don't pass up a chance to try Halo's mouthwatering mojitos and other tropical specialty drinks. Happy hour is 5-9 p.m. on weekdays where drinks are two for the price of one. (AN)

Heat
18 O St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.479.2233
Heat takes "house nights" to a whole new level. Afrodiziac Mondays feature black male and female illusionists as well as black and Latino dancers. Tipsy Tuesdays boast $2 pool games, $2 drinks from 9-11 p.m. and $2 shots. Black and Latino dancers preside over Hot Coco Wednesdays and Thirsty Thursdays put amateurs in the spotlight. Heat University Fridays cater to the collegiate set and Nite Camp Saturdays feature the Philly Night Camp Underwear boys. Patrons get a free drink every night with paid admission before midnight. JR's
1519 17th St. NW Washington DC; Tel. 202.328.0090
This multi-level neighborhood bar pulses with beats, boys and beer. It's been part of the Dupont Circle nightlife for many years but still hasn't lost its luster. Friendly bartenders and down-to-earth clientele make JR's a modern-day, but very gay Cheers. On Monday nights, come belt out Broadway's best during the popular showtunes sing-a-long or relive the wonder years on retro night Thursdays. (AN)

Kramer Books and Afterwords
1517 Connecticut Ave., NW Washington DC; Tel. 202.387.1400
The bookstore gained international fame and a Special Prosecutor's ire when it refused to submit then-intern Monica Lewinsky's book purchase receipts on principle. Still a progressive bastion, Kramerbooks provides the latest in Beltway memoirs, policy tomes and the best in current fiction. Readers can peruse the aisles till their fancies are tickled, check their email free on the store's somewhat antiquated Internet terminal, or nosh on a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads and coffee drinks at its in-house Afterwords café. Just make sure Kenneth Starr isn't doing his best J. Edgar Hoover impression in the next aisle. (MS)

Lizard Lounge
1223 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.331.4422
Slither into the workweek with one of the hottest parties in gay DC. Six nights a week, this locale is known as MCCXXII but on the seventh night, it becomes Lizard Lounge. On the posh first floor, stylish singles mix and mingle between large Romanesque columns opposite a long soapstone bar. A spacious dance floor allows patrons to groove to the sounds of resident DJ Kostas and special guest spinners. On the second floor, an illuminated steel catwalk overlooks the main party space, which connects a small exclusive bar and lounge furnished with plush velvet couches. Take advantage of early evening drink specials until 10 p.m. and there's always complimentary admission. If Sunday isn't enough, Chloe, one of Adams Morgan's newest, snazziest restaurant/lounges, is home to Hush, a weekly gay-oriented party. The revelry takes place every Thursday (2473 18th St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.232.5005). (AN)

Omega
2122 P St., NW, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.223.4917
For more than two decades, Omega has been a staple in the DC gay scene but only if you can find it. The club, which is Apex's sister establishment, is sandwiched in between apartment buildings and can't be seen from the street. Wednesday and Saturday night pool tournaments yield $50 and $25 bar tabs for first and second place winners and shirtless men also drink free on Wednesdays from 10-11 p.m. Karaoke contestants take the stage on Saturdays upstairs in the arcade and burly bartenders dispense spirits in their skivvies on Sundays. (AN)

Phase One
525 8th St., SE, Washington, DC; Tel. 202.544.6831
Women of all shapes, sizes and colors gather at Phase One, a hole-in-the-wall on Capitol Hill. This bar, also known as "The Phase," has been a destination for lounging ladies for more than three decades. The ambiance is lacking but the clientele is fun, friendly and ready to party. Every once in a while a man appears in the crowd but he's most likely a friend of the women who patronize this small, sassy place. (AN)

Remington's
639 Pennsylvania Ave., SE Washington DC; Tel. 202.543.3113
Electric Slide fans, beware--Remington's patrons need more than a simple two-step to be won over. This large Washington DC nightclub specializes in line dancing, man-to-man and cheek-to-cheek, and even offers lessons weekly. Butch (as in Cassidy) men and women glide across the hardwood dance floor while wallflowers wait for a cowboy or girl to lasso and lead 'em. (MS)

The Fireplace
2161 P St., NW Washington DC; Tel. 202.293.1293
It's unusual to find a gay bar that actually lives up to its name, but this dark, swank bar offers an actual fireplace that softly illuminates the profile of your would-be intended. Strong drinks and a friendly bar staff keep you company on cold nights and unobtrusive screens playing hot dance videos stoke the fires on warmer ones. (MS)

ZurichAltstadt, Kirchgasse 4. Cool jazzy bar, open from breakfast time onwards, thatâs gaining a reputation as an old-town meeting point away from the sleaze.
Babalu, Schmidgasse 6. Tiny postmodern-style bar, its chic denizens quaffing bottled beers and cocktails amidst an onslaught of jungle beats.
Cranberry, Metzgergasse 3. Strange combination of a cosy bar â predominantly gay â and what the management call a âsmoking loungeâ for dispersing cigar smoke and other fragrant aromas into the night air.
Nachtcafé, Münstergasse 26. An upstairs members-only restaurant, bar and dancefloor (no aftershave, no entry) with a chic basement bar open to all. Handy for late-night liquor, but still so hip it hurts. Closed Sun.
Odeon, Limmatquai 2. Compact café-bar on Bellevue, where Lenin once sat and watched the world go by. Thereâs little sign of revolutionary activity these days â although the bar prices would spark a popular uprising in any city other than Zürich.
Oepfelchammer, Rindermarkt 12. A 200-year-old building, all creaking timbers and lop-sided ceilings, famous for its association with the cityâs literary son, Gottfried Keller. The reason to visit is for beer in the tiny low-beamed upper front room, consistently packed. Legend has it that if you can swing up and wriggle your way through the gap between beam and ceiling, your beers are on the house: Keller may have done it, but few have braved the waiters since. Closed Sun & Mon.
Pigalle, Marktgasse 14. Legendary little bar filled with the elegantly wasted, or at least those who are aspiring.
Rheinfelder Bierhalle, Niederdorfstrasse 76. Best of the many Central-end beerhalls. With wooden benches, zero decoration and bright lights, this is a place to get shamelessly, sociably drunk, laugh loudly and clap strangers on the back. The food is cheap and hearty: daily specials for around Fr.13 are padded out by their infamous âJumbo Jumbo Cordon Bleuâ, at Fr.22 â a slab of deep-fried cheese-slathered meat so big it dangles off the plate on both sides. Closed Sun.
Schlauch, Münstergasse 20 (upstairs). Quiet, friendly and relaxed diner-bar, perfect to catch your breath from the Niederdorf scrum. Sizeable plates of health-conscious food (veggie and not), and a snooker hall adjacent attract a young, vaguely alternative crowd. Closed Mon & Tues.
Schober, Napfgasse 4. A memorable old confectionerâs and café thatâs straight out of Mary Poppins â a riot of frothy white lace, flowers and choice treats â but head through to the capacious interior for quite simply the best mug of hot chocolate (with whipped cream) you will ever have tasted. Itâs even a shame to spoil it with a slice of home-made apple strudel ⦠but then again.
Wüste, Oberdorfstrasse 7. Mellow, comfortable café-bar below the Otter hotel, decorated in ethnic style and dotted with candles.
Zähringer, Spitalgasse at Zähringerplatz. Long-standing co-operative-run bastion of Zürcher counterculture, attracting an alternative clientele for snacks, herbal teas and beer. Dawn opening on the weekends makes it a mecca for clubbed-out sleepyheads. Mon 6pmâmidnight, TuesâFri 8amâmidnight, Sat & Sun 5amâmidnight.
