What kind of 14th century kitchen would a peasant have?

Audra

If you lived back then, what would the kitchen look like and where would you keep all of the food? Would there have been an oven or stove [obviously not modern] or something like it? Just curious!

Answer
One point about medieval life that is often overlooked is that not all peasants were the same. Some were much better off than others, and owned more land, and could afford a better lifestyle. in 'Life in a Medieval Village' Frances and Joseph Gies write:

'All the village houses belonged to the basic type of medieval building, the "hall" as did the manor house, the barns, and even the church, a single high-ceilinged room, varying in size depending on the number of bays or framed sections. In peasant houses, bays were usually about fifteen feet square.

The house of a rich villager might consist of four or even five bays, with entriy in the middle of a long side. small service rooms were probably partitioned off at one end: a buttery, where drink was kept, and a pantry, for bread, dishes, and utensils, with a passage between leading to a kitchen outside. A large hall might retain the ancient central hearth, or be heated by a fireplace with a chimney fitted into the wall.

A middle-level peasant probably lived in a three-bay house, the commonest type. A cotter (peasants without land) might have a small one-or-two-bay house. Dwellings commonly still lodged animals as well as human beings, but the byre was more often partititioned off and sometimes positioned at right angles to the living quarters.

Interiors were lighted bya few windows, shuttered but unglazed, and by doors, often open during the daytime, through which children and animals wandered freely. Floors were of beaten earth covered with straw or rushes. In the centre a fire of wood or of peat burned on a stone heearth, vented through a hole in the roof. Some hearths were crowned by hoods or funnels to channel the smoke to the makeshift chimney, which might be capped by a barrel with its ends knocked out. The atmosphere of the house was perpetually smoky from the fire burning all day as water, milk, or porridge simmered on pots on trivets or in footed brass or iron kettles. At night a fire-cover, a large round ceramic lid with holes, could be put over the blaze.

The family ate seated on benches or stools at a trestle table, disasembled at night. Chairs were rarities. A c upboard or hutch held wooden and earthenware bowls, jugs, and wooden spoons. Hams, bags and baskets hung from the rafters, away from rats and mice. Clothing, bedding, towels and table linen were stored in chests. A well-t-do peasant might own silver spoons, brass pots, and pewter dishes.

The peasant's basic need was subsistence, which meant food and drink produced from grain. The main necessities of life were bread, pottage or porridge, and ale. Most peasant bread was made from 'maslin' a mixture of wheat and rye or barley and rye, baked into a coarse dark loaf, consumed in great quantities by men, women and children.

For the poorer peasant families, pottage was favored over bread as more economical, since it required no milling and therefore escaped both the miller's exaction and the naturla loss of quality in the process. Peas and beans supplied protein and amino acids to both pottage and bread. A little fat bacon or salt pork might be added to the pottage along with onions and garlic from the garden. In spring and summer a variety of vegetables ws available, and some crofts grew fruit trees. Nuts, berries and roots were gathered in the woods.

A middling family probably owned a cow or two or three ewes, to provide a supply of milk, cheese, and butter. Most households kept chickens and pigs to furnish eggs and occasional meat. Slated and dried fish were available for a price, as were eels, which also might be fished for.

How much should I ask for my barn wood table on craigslist?

Bored@work

My brother in law got ahold of some 160 year old barn wood, and built me a massive table. It is 8 ft 7 in x 4 ft 7 in, and it comes with a bench. It is very heavy, and sturdy and has a great design. It is too big for my kitchen, so I want to sell it, but I'm not sure how much to ask. Any ideas?

Answer
Really all depends on the fit and finish. If it's well done and finished then maybe $300. If it's just so-so then $100. Hope that helps.

where can i find designs to build an outdoor manger scene with wood?

Arthur G

I need designs for an outdoor manger that is inexpensive and doesnt take a long time to build.

Answer
Maybe you can use some ideas from smaller models of a stable for the manger scene & then enlarge it according to your needs. This small table-top building when completed measures only 17 1/2"W x 7 1/2"D x 11 1/2"T...but would serve as a great model:
http://www.grampasworkshop.net/nativity-shed.html

You can simply use 2 x 4's to frame up the back and sides. Then use a piece of particle board (or other material that is available) on the top for the roof & cover it with hay or straw. Use pieces of wood or wood slates to fill in the sides & back.

Perhaps you can get some ideas from these large outdoor live Nativity scenes:
http://www.littleriverfarms.com/nativity.htm
Click on the photostream on the right of this pg. to get more views.
These manger scenes used a lot of hay & just a small amount of wood:

http://www.zionbismarck.com/Live_Nativity_Pictures/live_nativity_pictures.html

Here are some Nativity scenes (creche) from around the world to inspire your own creation. These use various types of materials & designs... expressing each artist's unique culture & their vision of that special event.

Could you describe your bedroom for me?

Bridgett

paint, carpet, accessories?

most creative gets 10 points!

Answer
I'm not sure if my bedroom qualifies as creative, but it is restful and soothing.
My carpet is a medium shade of sand called "cashew". It's a high twist, called frieze.
My furniture is mission style...very simple. All but the headboard which is white wicker and two different end tables, one with a door and one just a two-tiered round table in the same wood.
Three of my walls are painted a light blue and one accent wall is a medium blue. That wall is directly across from my bed and has a big armoire on it which holds my t.v. inside.
My comforter is cream colored chenille, ribbed..no design, but does have fridge on the bottom.
I have 5 or 6 blue and brown and tan pillows in various shapes and patterns on my bed.
My curtains are striped in different shades of blues and tans.
I have a crystal lamp on my dresser and two medium blue metal lamps on each night table. I also have a small floral rug beside my bed and a cedar chest at the bottom of my bed for sitting and holding blankets.
Above my bed I have a favorite print, framed in white. It's an old time seaside of people walking on the beach in old fashioned clothing. On the other big wall I have 5 different art pieces that I like..some small, one big which all have shades of blue in them.
Can you see it?

what to do for my sweet 16 ?

irreplacea

i dont really want a party (: . my sweet 16 is in november and i know its pretty early. but i want some ideas. like the beach. but i think it`ll be pretty cold ! lol. or rent a hotel room? idk. give me ideasss please :D POOOL PARTY ? lol please help.

Answer
I agree, i think it may be a bit too cold in November...it could also rain and ruin everything! Invite your girl friends to go to a spa and get pampered!.. Get a manicure and a massage, maybe go for a swim. (Perhaps even get a free makeover in a dept store or get your hair styled).

It would also be really fun to have a pool party! Get some good music playing, some virgin cocktails and little canape snacks. Maybe play some games and just have fun!

Renting a hotel room is always hilariously good fun in my experience! If you're parents are feeling generous rent the suite! Would be great to just invite a load of your friends and play some loud music and order room service all night, watching movies and getting drunk on the quiet...it's your bday afterall!!)

Another idea is to go out for a fancy meal in an expensive restaurant with your best friends then going to see a movie. They could stay around your house after and you could make a huge delicious breakfast :).

For my 16th birthday i had a retro tea party at my house. Served up all that bright coloured food you had at your party when you were 5-10! Party rings, fairy cakes, crisps, pop, all the works. I made up a great spread of food..mini pizzas and sandwiches included! I also bought a load of plastic bracelets, hair accessories and rings and scattered them over the table with bright wrapped sweets and glitter confetti, these were my party favours. I only invited my closest girl friends and they all loved it!
It was a really sunny day so we went outside and sunbathed listening to music..was perfect!

Just do whatever you know you will enjoy..as it is your special day! Hope my suggestions help your decision...have a great day!

(Btw was reading your post about your boyfriend. My ex bf and i's relationship sounds exactly the same as your situation. You say you've broken up a few times...that was the same as me, i thought it meant that we were really strong to keep going back to each other but that really wasnt the case. It ended horribly with him going away on holiday...not contacting me the whole time and when he got back he was getting messages from a girl on his myspace who he kept talking about. He broke up with me the day before my important exam results and started going out with her!! I was devastated and didn't know how to live without him (pathetic!) but sooo glad we split up now i think about it. I think you need to end it personally...you don't sound happy with him and i hate how he checks out other girls..that's never healthy in a relationship. I've got a perfect bf now and am seriously so glad that stupid relationship ended.

Give it some time and really think about your relationship...
but from what you said it seems that you are tired of his annoying actions. Hope it all works out for you!)

What are the cheapest and best cities for nightlife in europe for young adults?

beach entry tables on United States From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation ...
beach entry tables image

Chloe

My friends and I want to go to Europe for 2-3 weeks in the summer. we want to limit our budget, learn during the day, and party at night. there are 4 of us and we will all be 18. we want to stay a couple of days in each city so we aren't traveling everyday. also one person speaks french and the three others speak english and spanish.
NEED suggestions on budget, nightlife, transportation, and things to see. we can only do so much, so i would like to get different views on this.

Answer
Europe is never cheap.

Some minimum prices for regular clubs:

Vodka Red-Bull: 11,50 â¬
Table in a club: 500-800 â¬
Entry for a well known DJ: 40-100 â¬

You may want to check out Zrce beach in Croatia... it's cheap compared to the rest, but it still has good atmosphere. But there is a lot of dudes and chavs (don't trust the publicity).

I think a table there is only 100 â¬. Entry last time I paid 30 ⬠for Tiesto I think. That's really not much.

Put more by side and do something decent instead. You'll never forget.

Do you have to pay for disney parking if you visit more than one park a day?

Paddy 4

So, if we decided to go epcot for the morning. And then hollywood studios in the afternoon on the same day, do we have to pay again for parking, or is it good for both parks?

Answer
No, but it depends''''vehicle at the World:

WHICH GUESTS MAY PARK FREE OF CHARGE?

If you are staying at a Disney resort, at check-in, you'll be given a parking pass to put on your dashboard. This pass identifies you as a Disney resort guest, and helps you gain easier access to other Disney resorts as well as granting you free parking at the four major theme parks. Though not Disney-owned, guests of the Swan and Dolphin hotels also park without charge at the theme parks. Swan and Dolphin guests will not receive a parking pass. Instead, showing a room key to the Cast Member at the parking tollbooths will allow free parking.

Annual Passholders may also park at the theme parks during regular park hours free of charge.

Members of the Tables in Wonderland (formerly Disney Dining Experience) program may park free of charge at the theme parks after 5:00 pm by showing their membership card at the tollbooths. TIW guests must pay to park when entering before 5:00 pm. After dining, guests must take the parking receipt and dining receipt to Guest Relations for a refund of the parking fee.

WHICH GUESTS MUST PAY TO PARK?

Non-Disney resort guests, or those staying off Disney property (with the exception of the above-mentioned passholders and program members) will be charged to park a vehicle at the four major theme parks. Guests need only pay for parking once per day and can move from park to park that day without paying again. Show the parking receipt received at the first park to the Cast Member at the next park's tollbooths to enter the parking lot without paying an additional charge.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PARK AT THE DISNEY THEME PARKS?

The daily parking charges for various vehicles are:
â¢-- Car/Taxi/Shuttle/Limo/Motorcycle $14
â¢-- Camper/Trailer $15
â¢-- Bus/Tractor Trailer $18

WHAT ABOUT PARKING AT OTHER DISNEY VENUES?

Parking at Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Winter-Summerland Mini-Golf, Fantasia Gardens Mini-Golf, Fort Wilderness, Wide World of Sports and self-parking at Downtown Disney is free to all guests, including those staying off property.

Self-parking for use of the entertainment and dining facilities at the Boardwalk's entertainment area is also free. Please note during peak periods parking may be reserved for Boardwalk Resort guests only!

Self parking at the Disney resorts is free to all guests; however some resorts have parking restrictions. The Contemporary, the Polynesian and the Beach Club give guests not staying at those resorts a 3-hour parking pass to allow shopping or dining at these resorts. Parking at any of the resorts to gain access to the theme parks is not allowed. Disney resorts may ask for a photo ID before allowing entry. Some Disney resorts may also ask for an Advance Dining Reservation number from guests who are dining at the resort before allowing access to the resort parking lot.

Shades of Green charges $5 to park at the resort.

The Swan and Dolphin charge $9 + tax for Overnight Self-parking; $9 +tax each exit for Day Self-parking. Overnight Valet parking is $16 + tax; while Day Valet parking $12 + tax each exit.

WHAT ABOUT VALET PARKING AT THE RESORTS?

Valet parking is available at the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Contemporary, Yacht Club, Beach Club, Boardwalk, Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge resorts. The charge is $12 per day plus tip. Guests need only pay for valet parking once per day at Disney resorts--show the day's valet receipt at the next resort to avoid being charged again.

Tables in Wonderland Members may valet park free of charge when dining at any Disney resort offering this service. Let the valet know you are parking with Tables in Wonderland. Upon return, show your card AND the receipt from the restaurant where you used the Tables in Wonderland card.

Valet parking is free of charge to all vehicles displaying a disabilties tag at Disney facilities offering valet service.

Valet parking at the Swan and Dolphin hotels is as follows:
Overnight Valet -- $16 + tax
Day Valet -- $12 + tax each exit

NOTE: Valet parking at the Swan and Dolphin is not reciprocal with the Disney-owned resorts. Disney resorts' valet receipts will not be honored by the Swan and Dolphin or vice versa.

What should i do with my swing set during the upcoming hurricane?

There's a hurricane coming up and i was wondering what i should do with my swing set? when two kids swing in the same direction, the swing set comes out of the ground. should i put it on it's side or leave it up during the hurricane?

Answer
If it is not anchored down, pull it over and lay it on the ground. And remove the swings and take them inside. We used to do that all the time, it's best to be safe - lay it up against the house and lay something heavy over it to stabilize it.

Also, if you have any patio furniture, take it inside or flip the table and lay the chairs down on top of it - and use some rope and secure them all together for added weight and safety. Look at any outdoor things that are loose - trash cans, planters or pots - move them inside or up against a wall.

What's a good (kid friendly, at least during the day!) pub/brewery/beer garden in Austin?

sarah_dtv

With good ambience. And kid friendly, which I mentioned. Thanks!
You're right, William K. Most of Europe IS white trash. What am I thinking??

Answer
The Draught House on Medical Parkway is your best bet by far for a family friendly pub and brewery.

They have been there for years making quality brews, and they also offer a great variety of imports.

They have good pub grub, too, and they offer free brats on Saturday and free pizza on Wednesday.

The outdoor tables are perfect for family, friends, kids, and dogs especially on late summer afternoons and early evenings.

Q. I want to eat+drink at an establishment that reminds me of the lucas arts monkey island games.
Seriously if such a place doesn't exist I dont know if I can go on living.

Answer
Start in Sydney and head north to the town of Woodtick. If you go to the right you will get to the south part of the island. Pick up the shovel from the sign and walk onto the bridge. Largo LaGrande will approach you and rob you of all your money.
Enter the second ship on Guybrush's right. Here you'll met Wally, the cartographer. Talk to him about everything, especially Big Whoop. When you are done talking to him, wait a while. When he puts his monocle on the table to rub his eyes, quickly take it. Before you leave, take a piece of paper from the pile at the bottom of the screen.
Light the paper on fire with the monocles and follow the smoke, there you will find a pub called Booty Pirate. Make camp for two weeks and call me in the morning.

Deliberation of Faruque Ahmed Regarding Terrorism at Herb Greedy Hall, Marrickville, Sydney, Australia
http://fantsa.blogspot.com/2010/03/deliberation-of-faruque-ahmed-regarding.html

Totally misguided, brutal and destructive Crusades, Inquisition and Conquistador are vanishing from memories! However, carefully crafted and nurtured Islamic Terrorism and 72 Virgins are overtaking almost every dinner tables and political discussion forums!

A Palestinian kid who is playing in mumâs cradle, backyard and schoolyard is a terrorist because another group of people racing from four corners of the world to the holy land with passports from God. These peoples are claiming;
1. âWe are the chosen people.
2. We are the superior race.
3. God gave us this land.
4. Our God gave us permission to ethnically cleanse non-Jews i.e. Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, ⦠.â
Naturally, a Palestinian kid and many decent people consider the above as the Israeli Holocaust in the occupied Palestine.

Theodor Hartzl, Vladimir Jabotinsky, Joseph Weitz and many more documentations prove the fact that the Israeli Holocaust in the occupied Palestine was planned before Hitlerâs holocaust. The 1952 Law of Entry, The 1952 Citizenship Law, The Law of Acquisition of Absentee Property, ⦠are only a few mechanisms to enforce and implement the most painful and slow motion Israeli Holocaust in the occupied Palestine.

First Jewish colony in Palestine, 1878, United Nations Partition Plan-UN Resolution 181, 1947 / Rhodes Armistice Line, 1949 and This offer Projection of the West Bank Final Status Map presented by Israel, Camp David, July 2000 clearly show that the Israelis are determined to continue with the Israeli Holocaust in the occupied Palestine.

72 Virgins to Nothing

72 virgins wait for any Muslim or even Arab who commit suicide. However, no one waits for non-Muslims!! Therefore the question is, "why non-Muslims commit suicide"?

According to the ever-growing myth, the Australian Government is obliged to provide 144 000 virgins for 2000 Australian citizens who have committed suicide last year alone! However the United Nations Organisation is not providing (80 000 X 72 = how many virgins?) virgins to 80 000 farmers of the world who have committed suicide in the year 2007 too!! Legend says most of these farmers are neither Muslims nor religious!!!

Nonetheless, the US President George Bush saluted the Jews of Masada who have murdered their own children and then committed suicide to avoid capture by the Romans as "pure Jews"!

However, when a Palestinian kid finds his/her;
1. Mother was murdered by the Zionist bomb,
2. Father was gunned down by the Israeli terrorists,
3. Sister was dishonored by the Jewish criminals and
4. Life is empty and hopeless.

In desperation, if this Palestinian kid threw his/her body against all of those injustices and barbaric crimes. However, some good people in the "west" love to find 72 virgins and many cruel comments like Nazi-Zionists/Israelis/"Jews".

One must wonder how the hell prejudice, bigotry, double slandered and hypocrisy mentioned above growing every year?!

Would you believe we are not even allowed to ask Who Is A Semite, Do You Know Who Is a True Jew? and What is a Judeo-Christian culture? at many forums including the Yahoo Q and A.

The Israelis are not Semites in the first place! According to many credible Jewish, Christian and Muslim documentations the Jews died with Moses as they broke their covenant with God and Moses in many times! Yet, they use anti-Semitism to cover up their crime spree! We are not even allowed to question them!! However, they are free to insult anyone at anytime as some Israeli channels making fun of Jesus and Virgin Mary and broadcasting The God and Virgin Marry Sex Video too.

Right now, 11 times more soldiers than the old crusaders are occupying and terrorising Muslims countries! Now, could you kindly let me know, who is terrorising who and who is the real terrorist?

Painting small metal furniture?

Crazybird

I have a folding (outdoor) table and 2 plant stands that fold up (all metal items) I would like to repaint. They have no rust and are in good shape overall, they could just look a bit better cosmetically (the factory black finish is faded). I would want to paint them white, so it would require a couple coats. I am wondering how I can paint them without hindering their ability to fold up so I can store them in the winter? I know I need to sand them and use the outdoor "rustoleum" spraypaint, but I'm concerned because I can't take them apart and I don't want the paint to get in the joints and keep them from folding. Would the paint even do this or is there anyway to prevent it?

Answer
fill the hinges or tracks with vasoline. the paint will wipe off in those areas. neat trick i learned for painting around hydraulics, just rub vasoline or grease on the hoses, same thing, they clean right up, no masking

It is one of those long tables that you might see set up at fundraisers or something . you can fold up the legs so you can transport them. the legs are metal and top plastic. it probably fits about 4 on each side and one on each end. can it be an outdoor table if I paint it and stuff or will it get ruined. what would i do to make it survive outside.

Answer
In a dry climate it might outlast you. Humid climates will eat it away (the metal of course).

What would you do with it anyway?

I say go ahead and use it outside.

Maybe a fresh coat of paint on the legs would help (they still might rust from the inside though). Keep the hinges and pivot points lubed with WD-40.

I think one of the best online sources for outdoor umbrellas is http://www.patioumbrellas.com. I've used the website before, and they usually have some great discounts. I just checked, and it looks like they're offering free shipping as well.

My favorites of their selection are include:

Any of the Sunbrella umbrellas, like this one: http://www.patioumbrellas.com/patio-umbrellas/wood-umbrellas/quickship9ftwoodcommercialgrademarketumbrella.cfm

The Coral Coast offset umbrellas, like this one: http://www.patioumbrellas.com/patio-umbrellas/aluminum-umbrellas/quickship9ftcoralcoastdesigner3waytiltpatioumbrella.cfm

This set normally costs about $3,500, so of course I'm looking to spend less than that if possible.

Answer
I would charge no less than $5,000, more depending on what type wood you wanted. I can't compete with China.

How much will it cost to completely furnish a 2 bedroom apartment?

Q. I'm just looking for an estimate. Like if the apartment had no dining room and just the living room and I used the second room as an office. How much would the initial cost be? (furniture, appliances, dishes, etc.)

Answer
I think that entirely depends where you are purchasing your items. If say, you are buying everything from Pottery Barn, that could run up a very large bill. However, if you do a mixture of bargain hunting, high end and low end, you can save a good amount of money. Home Designers are also noticing that buyers are going to Target and Walmart type stores primarily in this day in age, so they have made things that look much more expensive than they are to appeal to the public. You can find really great pieces and great looking decor at places like these. Even Nate Berkus has had a collection at Target and he did Oprah's house! I Splurge on things that will stand the test of time, like a great sofa. The smaller things like dishes don't need to be splurges (unless you absolutely love a certain collection, and have to get it, then its worth it) All in all, furnishing a home doesn't have to be costly if you know where to look. Don't forget goodwill if you're a good DIY person! âº

Here is a good example of some mixtures of high end/low end:

How would one practice for the Marine's marksmanship test?

camping tables target on Automobile Journal, Volume 32: Anonymous: 9781175164476: Amazon.com ...

Luke

I would like to go into the Marines, and would like to be a marksman or possibly a scout/sniper. How do I prepare myself for the test that, correct me if I'm wrong, you have to get 38/40 or better to qualify? I'm assuming the best platform would be the AR-15 since it has major similarities to the military counterpart.

Answer
There are two tests for rifle qualification in the USMC: one is table 1 which is 'target' shooting at 200, 300 and 500 yds. The other one is a combat marksmanship test which is done at 25, 50 and 100 yds.

The basic fundamentals for firearms are pretty much the same, especially for rifles. You just have to know the rifles capabilities. The NRA has shooting classes you can attend- many instructors have military and law enforcement backgrounds. Some have competed in matches. When you shoot, find a comfortable position and relax.

When I'm not shooting, I practice getting into shooting positions and dry fire the weapon. If you don't have a weapon, use a broom. I wouldn't stress too much though. You will get at least 3 wks to familiarize yourself with the m-16 at boot camp before qualification.

When will people realize the OWS are dangerous radical extremists?

Sir Willia

A disturbing flyer is making its way around the Occupy Phoenix camp. And itâs targeting cops.

Yesterday, the Arizona Counter-Terrorism Information Center (ACTIC â a division of the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety) released a bulletin announcing the chilling document that seems to endorse and justify the killing of law enforcement officers.

Copies of the âinformationalâ letter were apparently left on a table with other documents to âeducateâ protesters at Occupy Phoenix.

Answer
Never. Left wing media outlets are even bored because they want death. That way they can claim the protestors were martyrs. Its sickening.

How much money can a person generally make per week by waiting tables?

tables beach florida on Beach chair clip art, beach umbrella graphic
tables beach florida image

fireheart4

I hate my job and I want to escape it most days. I pull in $11.84 an hour with benefits, about $350 a week. Sometimes I think about just ditching my job and waiting tables, but I have bills to pay, so I am afraid to take that chance. As a good waiter, did you make enough money, and if so, what type of restaurant was it at? I only have experience as a host at Applebee's for a year, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
It depends on where you are, and the business trends (tourist season, where you are, things like that ...)

for example, i live in south florida. if you live around here, during tourist season you will SMASH $350 a week! but in the summer, i expect to make about that much.

if you are ok with $350 a week, you will be fine waiting tables. i don't know where you live, but i usually expect to make $500 - $600 as a "minimum acceptable" average. During the busy season, it's not unusual for me to average $700 - $900 a week. but before you get all starry-eyed, keep in mind that i work in a fairly expensive, extremely busy place.

at first, you'll have to "pay your dues" ... you wont be put in front of the money until you prove you can handle the volume (or earn the good graces of whoever makes the schedule -- politics is a big part of it).

if you've never served before and/or if you want benefits, go to a corporate place (NOT PF Chang's. be warned!). they don't look for experience as much as local, more upscale places. your experience at applebee's will help you ... at least you were there.

here's a good interview answer: managers will ask you how much you expect to make a week. they know how much you can make there ... if you want too much you're out, you'll just get bitter. if you say too little, you're setting yourself up to be the store doormat.

toss it back to them by saying something like, "i prefer to think of it in terms of how much i can expect to sell each night. if the sales oppourtunity is there and i do my job right, the money will come."

think about it: you're basically working for a 15-20% commission on your total sales each night.

you want to hear a number like $500-$800 in sales a night. realistically speaking it will be more like $300 sales on dead nights and $1500 sales on busy nights in a restaurant like outback.

things to look for:
1. people waiting for tables on busy nights
2. a bar
3. situated among other restaurants, or around foot traffic (near a mall, near the beach, etc)

things to avoid:
1. "all you can eat" specials
2. places that frequently offer coupons
3. places that frequently put up and then take down help wanted signs (=people are leaving for a reason!)

this is all a lot to think about. but when it comes down to it, just go out and put in a application in every restaurant you can find. at the very least, you'll learn something just from going in and talking to someone. also, just by reading your question, you seem like a fairly intelligent and reasonalble person. believe me, that's worth something! if some of the freaks i work with could get hired, so can you.

as far as being concerned about that the risk, there is risk in making any cange. but one thing you might consider: waiting tables is a night job. and a lot of people do it part time. if you're willing to put in the hours, you don't have to quit your current job to do this until you're ready.

good luck!

What are some good wedding venues in jacksonville, hilliard, yulee, or fernandina florida?

Mollie

I am trying to plan a wedding on quite a tight budget and don't necesarily want to have to opt for a beach wedding like everyone else. But I still want it to be nice at the same time. I have a few months but not really too many. Help please?

Answer
there are some nice places you can rent for very little in that area. here are a few ideas.

the city of fernandina beach has several event auditoriums from large to small. the atlantic auditorium which can hold up to 325 people seated is available to rent for only 570 dollars for the whole day and this includes the kitchen and 225 chairs plus 30 tables. they have smaller auditoriums as well, all with tables and chairs and a kitchen, some rent for as little as 150 dollars. http://fbfl.us/index.aspx?NID=595 (don't freak of they require insurance because that type of insurance is very cheap and you or your parents can often get your homeowner policy to cover it for free)

the parish hall at blessed trinity catholic church in jacksonville rents for 850 dollars per day, which includes the cleaning fee. http://btccjax.org/html/events.html

you can rent the mansion in hilliard for the starting fee of only 200 dollars (if you rent it prior to october 2011), depending on how much space you need and whether you rent just the house or the grounds and the house. http://thehilliardmansion.com/

you didn't mention orange park, but if that is not too far away for you, there is a great wedding venue called winterbourne on st johns which comes fully decorated for weddings so you don't have to worry about doing that. the rental for ceremony and reception plus the reception food prices start at 1900 which is a complete package. http://www.winterbourneonstjohns.com/

the garden club of jacksonville rents their club room and their ballroom for weddings. the club room starts at 600 and can seat about 80. the ballroom can seat up to 400 and rents for 2500 on saturdays but only 1000 on a weeknight. http://gardenclubofjacksonville.org/rental.htm

Do you enjoy staying in hotels?

camping table lantern stand on camp your camp helpfulcamping it has an effectivebudget camping stoves
camping table lantern stand image
Q.

Answer
I do a fair amount of traveling during the warm months to medieval festivals and events like Blackstone Raids and Pennsic War, and sometimes it is just easier to stay in a nearby hotel for the smaller events, esp. the ones held in early spring or late fall (not to mention the ability to take a hot shower).
But I actually prefer camping, because my tent is a 16x16 medieval canvas pavilion made by Panther Primitives. It has a 12 foot high center peak with 7 foot high corner poles. I drop a plastic ground cloth, followed by a thick canvas tarp, and finish with a large 8x10 area rug for a warm, dry floor. My bed is made from medieval designs - a wooden frame with mortise/tenon connections, and held together by rope that is woven thru holes in the frame both side-to-side and end-to-end. A thick foam mattress goes on top, followed by heavy blankets and large pillows.
A wooden folding slat table goes in one corner, along with a Viking style two-piece slat chair. Lighting is by candle lanterns that hang from hooks on the center pole or by a modern camp lantern in emergencies. Celtic tapestries adorn the walls, hanging from an interior "curtain" rope. These tapestries eliminate the shadow effect from interior lighting, so no one standing outside can watch the shadowplay and see what I'm doing, and they dress up the interior beautifully. Everything is designed to be taken apart or rolled up for easy transport. It's roomy, airy, and there is nothing quite like camping in a medievally period pavilion.

Outdoor wood picnic tables/benches - how to refinish?

wood benches for tables on this folding island right wood kitchen style select solid wood
wood benches for tables image

Lepke

We have some outdoor wood picnic tables that are currently unfinished and kind of grayish from being outside for years. I would like to sand them then apply a clear polyurethane finish on them. Is that what I would use? Is there a special kind that I need? I've never done this before so any help would be great! By the way, I don't know if this matters, but the tables are in the sun pretty much all day. Thanks for your help.
If I just sand it instead of powerwashing it, will it also work?

Answer
You could clean them with a high pressure sprayer and then after it dries apply a couple of coats of spar varnish on them, that is what they use on boats and would hold up the best.

What colors are best for my humble patio furniture?

Q. I am moving into a home with a cute little side, covered patio. It is rectangular with several small trees on the side. Nothing special. Just some concrete and a wood cover. I currently own some nice deep green plastic chairs and a white bench with table. What colors would you recommend spray painting them? All the same color or separate? Dark wicker planters, stone planters, and a medium stone waterfall will be coming with me as well. Thank you!

Answer
Either match the green or beige, white shows dirt so much. If they are nice and pretty now then don't spray paint them until the need to have a nice little touch up to look new again. Does the wood cover need to be treated yet? If so, a nice red cedar finish with the other stuff painted to match would look good.

Are there any hard shell camping trailers that can be pulled by your average 6 cylinder sedan?

camping tables and benches on Bench Tables and Chairs Outdoor Chairs Furniture Perth | Millwood
camping tables and benches image

Uncle Penn

Doesn't have to be big, but something that isn't one of those pop up tent trailers.

When I was a boy, my dad took us camping often using a small trailer that slept 4, had a sink, icebox, stove top and 4 person table and benches. The whole thing was probably no more than 14' long. He usually pulled it behind some sedan his company issued him at the time, and we seemed to have no problem pulling it.

Do they still make anything like that?

Answer
Yes, there are. They aren't going to be big, your average 6 cylinder sedan is only rated for 1-2 thousand pounds towing. It's not the engine that's the problem. It's the frame of the car. Your Grandpa's six cylinder Rambler only has 130 HP, but it had a full steel frame. Your modern sedan doesn't.

Visit your local RV dealership and talk to them.

What is the length of a traditional A frame picnic table?

Rusty B.

I need to buy a screen house for a camping trip and I'm wondering if anybody knows what the length of a standard park picnic table is (the A frame tables with attached benches that are as long as the table top is). Please help!

Answer
They are pretty much standard and are available in 6ft and 8ft lengths. They also measure 5.5 ft across, bench edge to bench edge. I have been to State Parks however that were a bit larger than 8ft. If you are going to a campsite, you can call ahead and they should be able to tell you the table sizes before you go. A 10'X10' screened in dining fly should cover any of the easily and still allow you room to get around in them. Happy Camping!

My wife and I would like to buy a small, table top Nativity set. We've looked at some online, but would really prefer to see some up close in a retail setting. Any suggestions?

Were are in the NY metro area.

Thanks!

Answer
If you ever visit Germany or Italy, you can buy nice handmade ones. WalMart or Target might have some. You might consider getting an outdoor lighted kind (home depot?Lowes? Walmart?). So many ppl forget about Christ during Christmas.

Where can I get lumber, building materials for outdoor wood tables and benches in general?

Please provide address of the place that does closest to 90005 zip code if you can. Closest one to my home address (which I will not provide) gets best answer.

...choice wood is cedar....redwood....or pressure treated pine (let p.t. pine dry after the furniture is built, then coat with stain & varnish)
...and IMHO, I coat with spar varnish
...the varnish is marine grade and lasts
...you may prefer to paint bright colors, instead of varnish
...again, IMHO, if painting, use the p.t.pine, paint once the wood dries several days in good sun
...pine costs least, is very durable
...cedar costs more, for bare wood disease resistance
....redwood costs most, and is disease resistant

ONce again, IMHO, why paint over pretty wood grains? like cedar, so varnish over cedar, or prime and paint over pine
...exterior latex is thrifty

Which is the best city in Israel for fun and nightlife?

beach style table lamps on Contemporary Table Lamp from Plantation
beach style table lamps image

Mark

Answer
Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is nicknamed "the city that never stops" meaning that the nightlife goes on until morning, bars are very trendy at the moment as the main nightlife outing, also
pubs and music clubs are in. Restaurants and cafés are also open at least until midnight.

The Bars and Clubs that are supposed to be IN are playing hard to get and there is a tough selection at the door.

There are different kind of bars part of them are pick up bars, gay bars, age related bars and dance clubs - In Alenby street area are the bars that I don't recommend - the best clubs and bars are in Tel Aviv port or in the Rotschild Blvd. area.

The clubs have every night different style of music so it is recommended to check what's on before you go.

In the summer there are bars on the beach with tables and chairs on the sand on Frishman and Jerusalem Beach, Banana Beach you can find them by the colorful triangle shaped lamps

Walking in the streets at late hour is safe relatively.

Israelis drink but not in large quantities so you see very few
drunks in the streets.
However if you hang along alone in the late hours on the streets it is better to keep to yourself and not get involved in raws because in certain areas it can get rough.

Whats some good beaches to practice surfing for a beginner on the east coast in Florida?

beach end tables on Stitches and Seams: Ren Faire Costume - Sewing Begins
beach end tables image

Gracie2u

I'm a beginner at surfing. Like a total newbie haha.
Today, i practiced at Jetty Park, by the Cape Canaveral in Cocoa Beach.

Im wondering if there are any other good places for beginner surfers on the east coast of florida?

Answer
The Jetty is good. Try the Pier in Cocoa Beach which is a couple miles south of there. This is the best for a beginner. It is fairly shallow and a sandy bottom. Just sit further from the crowds and it'll be all good.

Other breaks you could look at are:

Most of the Streets in Cocoa Beach.

The beaches along Patrick AFB. 2nd light and picnic tables.

Further south is the Boardwalk, the one with Bizarros pizza.

If you keep going south you'll end up at the Sebastian Inlet.

Most of these are sand bottoms from what I remember. Good luck and don't piss off us locals! lol

Are there any calm beaches near the north shore in the winter months?

Steve

Staying at Turtle Bay... I know the waves there will be big, wondering the closest beach thats good for swimming, with low waves. I will have a car so can drive a bit. Any suggestions?

Answer
Malaekahana State Park is sheltered by an outer reef so it is usually very calm. It has a beautiful beach (see the URL below) which has very few people. I was just there several days ago and it was great. Goat Island is about 200 feet offshore and has two small secluded beaches. The water is shallow enough to wade out to.

http://www.hawaiigaga.com/oahu/beaches/malaekahana-state-park.aspx

When you drive in to the parking area go all the way to the end then walk out of the end of the parking lot. There is a bathroom and a lot of picnic tables. Just beyond those is a long beach.

You can do a Google Images search for "Malaekahana" and get many more pictures.

Shark's Cove has a very sheltered area for snorkeling but the water is only about three feet deep. The open area of the cove gets large waves in the winter and can be dangerous.

Check with the concierge at Turtle Bay for more up-to-date information.

------------------------
January 23, 2010 UPDATE
To show you how variable the surf is in the winter, this morning the surf is down. Sunset Beach is 2 - 3 feet. Pipeline is 1 - 3 feet. The Volcom Pipeline Pro surf meet was cancelled. This means you can basically swim anyplace. Again, check with the concierge at the hotel for the latest conditions.

Also, when you get to the beach, look for the lifeguard towers. Ask what the conditions are and if there are any problems. Sometimes there can be currents that are not obvious.

im going to hawaii with my family any fun ideas?

Answer
1. The Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort, south of Kailua-Kona shines lights on the water at night around their hotel...it has attracted plankton and because there is no coral reef to block sea life that would normally be in the open ocean, the huge manta rays come at night to feed right off the hotel. So you can go at night, but you can also book a tour to do a night dive with the manta rays!
http://www.sheratonkeauhou.com/mantaraye...

2. There is a great catamaran cruise called the Fair Wind that takes you to Kealakekua Bay for snorkeling or scuba diving. You leave from Keauhou Bay for 4-5 hours. Along the way since the water is very deep and no protected lagoons here, you have the chance of seeing flying fish scatter as the boat approaches, as well as spinner dolphins. Once there, the size of tropical fish is amazing.
http://www.fair-wind.com/

3. Above Kailua-Kona is the funky artist's town of Holualoa. Hiroki Morinoue (Studio 7 on the main street) and other artists live here. You can also visit the Holualoa Coffee Factory where they package kona coffee from the cooperative of kona coffee growers here and take a short tour to learn about how coffee is graded and packaged.
http://www.konalea.com/

4. South of town in Kealakekua Bay is the City of Refuge, absolutely the most glamorous ancient Hawaiian archeological site, in the most glamorous setting of coconut groves set along the water on black lava.
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...

5. Don't forget to get a slice of macadamia nut pie, basically pecan pie but made with macadamia nuts. YUM.
http://www.macpie.com/

6. There is a restaurant halfway between town and Keahou called Jamieson's. They have a branch in Haleiwa, Oahu which is not very good, this one is better. It is on the ground floor of an old condo one side of Magic Sands beach, but once in the restaurant the views are amazing. When the water is rough the waves splash over the wall on the outside terrace, so beware when selecting a table! They usually have live Hawaiian music.
http://www.jamesonshawaii.com/jamesonsko...

7. Kailua Kona is famous for going on charter boats to go deep sea fishing for marlin, you will see many boats for hire there.

8. There is the Atlantis submarine tours that leave from a pier in town, worth to see once.
http://www.atlantisadventures.com/kona.c...

9. Also in the Kohala area is an irrigation "ditch" tour by boat. Sounds very strange and I have never done this, but friends have and say it was fun, very historic and pretty in places. It was damaged in the earthquake in few years back, check to make sure it is open again.
http://www.flumindaditch.com/

10. In Hilo, there is a Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut visitor center, fantasic free samples!!!!!!!!

11. Akaka Falls, north of Hilo is the most beautiful of all (easily accessible) hawaiian waterfalls.

12. And of course....Kilauea eruptions and Volcano National Park. You can hike, take boat or fly-over tours...

I am going to Hawaii in April Oahu & Maui. Anyone have any suggestions on the best things to see & do & eat?

Jennifer W

We are going to be in Oahu for 3 nights and Maui 4 nights. I am looking for the best places to eat, shop, explore and just fun stuff to do. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. This is my first time going & I can't wait!!!!!

Answer
I've only been to Oahu once and that was on an interisland side trip while staying in Maui to see the USS Arizona memorial. And, that is an absolute must-do if you're in Honolulu. Keep in mind, though, that you have to go there and get a ticket in advance that day that's a certain color. Then, when they call your color (which can be a couple hours later), you start your tour. The tour itself lasts a couple hours, depending on how long you stay there. It starts out with a movie presentation in a theater and then the boat goes out to the memorial. You then come back whenever you want.

There's lots to do on Maui (it's where I go every year - I have a timeshare in Kahana on the northwest side). About 10 miles southeast of the airport in Kahului is the town of Paia, where the north swells can get about 15 to 20 feet. It's amazing to see the surfers and windsurfers out there on those huge waves. And, the waves crashing on the rocks can be spectacular. There's also a couple of cool places to eat in Paia Town, right on the main road.

In Maalaea (on the west side of the island, where the road forks to Kihei and Wailea to the south, and Lahaina to the north) is the Maui aquarium. I think it costs about $15 - $20 per person, but it's a very cool place to check out. There's also a bunch of shops and restaurants around there.

Any trip to Maui has to include at least a stop in Lahaina. On the main drag next to the ocean are all kinds of cool shops and restaurants. My favorite place to go is Cheeseburger in Paradise. Get a second floor table next to a window if you can. They look out over the water. But, there's a whole row of restaurants on that side of the street.

Further up the road about 5 miles north of Lahaina Town is Kaanapali. Just south of the Sheraton hotel is a large outcropping of volcanic rock called Black Rock. This is probably the best snorkeling on the island. But, parking is difficult to find unless you pay for valet at the hotel. There's also some rather expensive shopping in Kaanapali. But, it's interesting to look.

One thing that's very cool to do is take a sunset cruise. You can get one out of Maalaea Harbor, Lahaina, or right off Kaanapali Beach. If you take the one off the beach, be aware that you don't wear shoes on the cruise. They back a huge catamaran up to the beach and you rush up the ladder in between waves. So, wear shorts and plan on getting a bit wet. One operator uses a rubber pontoon boat to shuttle people from the beach to the catamaran. Still, it's no shoes and you will get wet.

If you like hiking, two good choices are Iao Valley and the lava fields south of Wailea. Iao Valley is a dense jungle area in the middle of the north half of the island. It has streams and trails, and lots of pools in the rocks that are big enough to swim in. Wear good hiking boots or shoes, and expect to get muddy.

To get to the lava fields, just follow the road signs to Wailea and keep going south until the road ends. From there, you can just start walking south across the lava fields toward the jungle (there's a pretty good path in the jungle). Wear sturdy shoes for this. The lava can be sharp, and it might cut up into sandals or flip flops. The jungle is dry with a dirt path. And every hundred yards or so is another cove with beautiful turquoise water ,and waves splashing up against the red and white volcanic rocks.

Since you're only there for a few nights, I would avoid the trip to Hana. It's an all-day trip, mostly because it takes about 4 hours to drive the narrow highway. Besides, there's not much to see there. Maybe some cool waterfalls along the side of the road or along the hiking trails. But, why waste a whole day? Also, going to see the sunrise at Haleakala is very cool. But, you have to start out at about 3 in the morning and it takes about 3 hours to get there. It's also about 40 degrees with a 30 MPH wind that cuts right through you. And, who wants to pack the clothing needed for such a thing?

Kitchen- table and chair set, fridge, dish washer, plates, flat wear, glasses, dish towels, cooking wear

(If)den-alot of fluffy chairs, a couch, and ookshelves instead of puttig them in the livingroom
General-curtains, washer and dryer, rugs, plants (I would go for fake ones that you don't have to take carre of) personal items like pictures, and stuff make it look like your own
cleaning supplies- like broom, dust pan, soap for dishes and cloths, light bulbs,
I personally don't like my stuff to match, like in my living room for example I have an ugly brown plad recliner, a van bench seat, and bean bags with old fashion sewing tables as end tables, a vanity seat for a cofee table, and a unicorn lamp.

Is it selfish when someone has food on their plate, but they take more food?

Nam

My friend tends to do this A LOT! We eat with each other, and he grabs a load of food to put on his plate. For example, there are several more shrimp left; I have nothing on my plate, while he has a lot on his, and he takes the last of the shrimp. Is this selfish?

Answer
A way to solve this problem is to put each person's food onto their plates and do not have a shared bowl from which to take the food. If there's any left over, don't mention it, simply leave it on the kitchen bench and when he has finished eating, and you're full as well, tell him that if he's still hungry he may have what's still left on the kitchen bench. Don't always have some left over, or he'll just stand up and race you to where he knows there's food. Sometimes have extra, at other times don't have any extra. He'll slowly learn to ask, and will probably learn to follow the good example you've set down for him by asking if you have finished and if you'd like more food. Sometimes, it's better to put ideas into practise than to try and verbally instruct others. The chances of his having seen and heard of table etiquette are high, he just needs to stop and think about what he's doing.
