What's a durable finish for outdoor funiture.?

outdoor wood tables on Wooden Furniture Benefits, Know Why Wood Furniture is Still Best

The varnish on my wood outdoor patio table wore off. Last summer I sanded for hours and reapplied 5 COATS of polyurethane. This spring it all wore off in the rain storms. I live in S. Cal. so it's not like we have an enormous amount of rain.

Now I have to sand and recoat again. What should I use? What brand?

Answer
Wow, I live in SoCal, too, and had a disappointing experience with McCloskeys Man O War Spar Marine Varnish. I used it on a bench in my backyard and put 3 heavy coats. Within a year, it had yellowed terribly and started flaking off. I had to sand it down and I recoated it with that new Stain/Paint by Olympic. I didn't even seal it and I used the black. It hasn't faded, peeled or chipped at all. It is in blazing sun all day, gets hit by the automatic sprinklers and the weed wacher but still looks as nice as it did the day I painted it.

Where can I get lumber, building materials for outdoor wood tables and benches in general?

:)

Please provide address of the place that does closest to 90005 zip code if you can. Closest one to my home address (which I will not provide) gets best answer.

Answer
Home Depot

LOWE'S OF HAWTHORNE

...choice wood is cedar....redwood....or pressure treated pine (let p.t. pine dry after the furniture is built, then coat with stain & varnish)
...and IMHO, I coat with spar varnish
...the varnish is marine grade and lasts
...you may prefer to paint bright colors, instead of varnish
...again, IMHO, if painting, use the p.t.pine, paint once the wood dries several days in good sun
...pine costs least, is very durable
...cedar costs more, for bare wood disease resistance
....redwood costs most, and is disease resistant

ONce again, IMHO, why paint over pretty wood grains? like cedar, so varnish over cedar, or prime and paint over pine
...exterior latex is thrifty

Where can i find a large outdoor patio table with solid, sturdy legs?

All of the tables i've found are hollow metal and poorly made. They bend too easily and don't stay perpendicular to the ground. Need indoor dining table quality, but weather proof and big. Thinking marble or granite. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you are looking for solid sturdy outdoor table, maybe you can consider buying these 3 kinds of patio table, Iron patio table, teak patio table or wood patio table with stone leg.

First and second type of patio table you can find it on eBay, Amazon and other online store. The last one, you need to customize desktop and stone leg in different place.

If you do not have space to store your patio table, and you do not move your patio table often, you can consider buying a large waterproof outdoor patio furniture cover to cover your patio table when you not use it.

Outdoor patio furniture covers could keep your patio table from dust, rain, bird droppings and so on. It will decrease times of cleansing for you.

Is there something I can apply to an indoor wood table to make it usable outdoors?

I really like the table and would like to use it for outdoor dining. I know I can't use it as it is because the rain will cause the would to separate. Any ideas?

Answer
They have a marine varnish for boats that you can get at an Ace Hardware. I just put it on my picnic table and it was really a nice shiny thick coating on it.That is really water proof because its for boats.

I am trying to convert an old cable reel (think super big thread holder) Anyway it is solid wood and I am staining, then varnishing the whole thing and tiling the top. Any way to keep termites from getting to it? There is no way i can get to the middle which is solid wood as well. Any ideas on how to keep it safe from the elements I would appreciate. Thanks!

Answer
termites do not like sunlite, but will eat any type of wood sitting on groung, keep on concrete! cover & secure w/ plastic to prevent rain etc from intering wood

where can i find designs to build an outdoor manger scene with wood?

Arthur G

I need designs for an outdoor manger that is inexpensive and doesnt take a long time to build.

Answer
Maybe you can use some ideas from smaller models of a stable for the manger scene & then enlarge it according to your needs. This small table-top building when completed measures only 17 1/2"W x 7 1/2"D x 11 1/2"T...but would serve as a great model:

You can simply use 2 x 4's to frame up the back and sides. Then use a piece of particle board (or other material that is available) on the top for the roof & cover it with hay or straw. Use pieces of wood or wood slates to fill in the sides & back.

Perhaps you can get some ideas from these large outdoor live Nativity scenes:

These manger scenes used a lot of hay & just a small amount of wood:

Here are some Nativity scenes (creche) from around the world to inspire your own creation. These use various types of materials & designs... expressing each artist's unique culture & their vision of that special event.

Good luck & Merry Christmas! Hope this is helpful.
