My dining room table is 36' high and I want to purchase or have a bench made for it, how tall should the bench to be sit comfortably at the table?

The bench should be around 24" high. 12" is a comfortable distance from seat to top. Hope this helps.

Both sets are made of wood, dark cherry finish. Bedroom set has 7 pcs. (headboard, footboard, vanity, bench, dresser, mirror, and chest). Dining room set has table w/leaf, 6 chairs, china cabinet, and chest. Antiques? Where to sell?

Go to the library and ask the information desk about finding a book to help you price the pieces. I did and found out I had a table worth $11,000. I was shocked.(no I didn't sell it). You can also look under the furniture and try and find the manufacturer and then do a computer search. Once you find a price you can go to Craigslist or put it in an antique store on consignment. Or just put an ad in your local paper or Penny Saver.

This set normally costs about $3,500, so of course I'm looking to spend less than that if possible.

I would charge no less than $5,000, more depending on what type wood you wanted. I can't compete with China.

I think that entirely depends where you are purchasing your items. If say, you are buying everything from Pottery Barn, that could run up a very large bill. However, if you do a mixture of bargain hunting, high end and low end, you can save a good amount of money. Home Designers are also noticing that buyers are going to Target and Walmart type stores primarily in this day in age, so they have made things that look much more expensive than they are to appeal to the public. You can find really great pieces and great looking decor at places like these. Even Nate Berkus has had a collection at Target and he did Oprah's house! I Splurge on things that will stand the test of time, like a great sofa. The smaller things like dishes don't need to be splurges (unless you absolutely love a certain collection, and have to get it, then its worth it) All in all, furnishing a home doesn't have to be costly if you know where to look. Don't forget goodwill if you're a good DIY person! âº
