A garden table and a bench cost $600 combined. The garden table costs $50 less than the bench. What is the cost of the bench?

Answer
Let x = cost of bench
Then x - 50 = garden table

x + x - 50 = 600
2x = 650
x = $325
x - 50 = $275

The bench cost $325.

x = 3y

x + y = 1000

3y + y = 1000 4y = 1000 y = 250 therefore x = 750
