TIPS: freeze your water/milk/meat before hand so it helps keep everything in the cooler cold. Try to prepare foods ahead of time, so it's easier to make meals when you camp. (like browning your ground beef ahead of time)
You can NOT have enough lanterns or flashlights!!

i decide its better to rent a pickup truck for camping. Any advice on how to secure the loads in place?

im am just planning everything out right now. i know basically nothing about a pickup trucks. should everything be covered with a tarp?

All the little and light stuff should be under heavy stuff. Say for instance you have pillows and a table you'd put the pillows on the bottom and the table on top and then get sturdy rope, bungees or bailing twine and tie it down. Along the sides of the truck bed should be holes where a canopy would secure, use those to hook the bungees or pass the rope or twine through and tie the heck out of it with big knots. A tarp might hold it all down I don't know how that works. When you get it all loaded ask a country boy to show you how to do a good tie down including the knots.

I am new to camping and need a place in WI that I can just hike in and camp where ever.?

I am fairly new to camping, I have been out a few times. I am a hiker, kayaker and general lover of all things outdoors. i am looking for a place in Wisconsin to either hike or kayak and then be able to set up a small camp wherever I feel like. Not a public type campground with outlets and showers.

Please any info would be very appreciated.

Hi,

In most of Wisconsin, the southern 2/3 anyway, the only camping areas are state parks or private campgrounds - both of which designate where you can camp, but they aren't all over-crowded. And even in Kettle Moraine North - they have shelters for you to stay in, and you need to have a permit, etc. I don't believe they allow dispersed camping in that park either.

When you get into northern Wisconsin, you can hit the Nicolet National Forest, and there are plenty of remote / rustic sites that will leave you with few if any neighbors. Check with the local rangers about dispersed camping here, as I think there are only loose guidelines in site selection there.

The ultimate trip, of course, would be up in the Apostle Islands. There you could kayak and hike to your heart's content, hike and camp, and howl with the wolf pack!

You can canoe / kayak camp on the lower 100 miles of the Wisconsin River; from Sauk City on down, you can camp on any sandbar you come across - and there are some excellent spots. No permits are required, the only rules the DNR worry about is to make sure you don't bring glass with you on the river.

And the St. Croix river has canoe camping; I haven't had the good fortune to paddle it, but I believe the campsites are established sites, with picnic tables and fire rings. (no vehicle access though, from what I gather).

Buckhorn State Park on Castle Rock lake is a great option too. They have numerous hike-to sites. Not exactly backpacking on a trail, but you hike in up to a mile to get to your campsite. They have pit toilets nearby, but no showers and RV generators to deal with. The park is on Castle Rock Lake, and all kinds of boats are able to access some of their shoreline campsites. There are numerous bars / restaurants nearby, so you may hear bands / noise from across the lake when you're at a shoreline site. You can kayak in however, and hike in the park.

Hotels in Branson missouri that are cheap?

My family and I are planning on going to Branson in July sometime and I was wondering what are some cheap but nice hotels around...

I've been to Branson MANY times.

A good way to get CHEAP stay and show tickets is to sign up for a time-share sales presentation. Yeah, you gotta suffer through 2-hours of high-pressure sales tactics but hold your ground if your not interested and you'll still get your show tickets and cheap lodging.

If that's not your cup of tea...

Depending on where you want to go and do, EconoLodge Branson West is furthest from downtown Branson, but closer to Silver Dollar City. I paid less than $70/night...and it's not the greatest place either.

Howard Johnsons is close to downtown without being on the strip. It's high on a hill near the wax museum. I stayed there in early June a few years ago and got a room for less than $80/night and was VERY nice.

I heard Mountain Music Inn is nice too. My parents stay there a lot.

The cheapest place to stay would be to camp out (pop up camper or tent) on Table Rock Lake at Baxter campgrounds.

I grew up camping on the lake; as an adult, I stay in the hotels because I don't feel like hauling all my camping gear 4.5 hours just for two nights.

As for restaurants...you can't go wrong with Ruby Tuesdays and Cracker Barrel. Dockers is a terrible place. My husband and I got sick on Thanksgiving food there. We later heard from many locals the place was bad. I think they were closed for good the last time I was in Branson
