Road Trip near Little Rock, Arkansas......... where to go?

Ade

If you were in Little Rock, Arkansas, and wanted to go on a road trip because you're new to the state and know nothing about your surrounding states, and just want to take a 1 day or weekend road trip, where would you suggest? No camping, no kids, just stuff like, plantations, or riverboats, or Texas, whats to see around here?

Answer
Considering that it's January, and you don't want to camp (neither would I this time of year), you still have several options that would keep you entertained for a weekend of fun.

Option 1. Branson, Missouri. -- It would be about a 3 hour drive. Even if you aren't big into country music, there are a zillion things to do there. You can eat great food, go see comedy shows, shop for rustic arts and crafts, take boat tours, see the School of the Ozarks Museum where there's interesting anthropology exhibits unique to the area, you could see Marvel Cave, a huge and beautiful cave near Branson, or just drive around Table Rock Lake and Taneycomo lake and soak up the scenery. There's also a really cool trout hatchery at the dam. If you are into country music, then you'll be like a pig in mud. You can't throw a rock without hitting a country music show. Lots of the big stars of the 70's and 80's got tired of the b.s. in Nashville and headed west for the small town lifestyle and slower pace of Branson, and they are still excellent musicians. Likewise, you'll hear some local talent that will make you wonder why they aren't famous.
Finding a quality bed and breakfast or hotel room would not be a big deal this time of year. In fact, I'm guessing this would be one of the least expensive vacations of your life.

Option 2: You could go to Hot Springs, which is even closer to Little Rock than Branson. You can soak in natural hot springs, and see turn of the century architecture. There's delicious dining, nature trails, and various other attractions. I'm not as familiar with Hot Springs as I am Branson, but I've been there, and it's a cool place.

Option 3: Do you fish? If so, you are fairly close to the Little Missouri, the Red River (much different than in oklahoma), and Taneycomo lake. Right now, the bass fishing sucks. However, the trout fishing should be excellent. Taneycomo has world class trout, up to 20 lbs (I am not kidding here). They are rare, mostly they'll be smaller and plentiful, but the biggies do get caught. If you are really adventuresome, hire a guide and do some winter smallmouth fishing on the Ouchita river in the trophy smallmouth area near Mena, Arkansas, about an hour and a half west of Little Rock. The Caddo river is also excellent. It's smaller and less developed, and not as deep, but the fishing is great. I'd go for the Ouchita in the winter though.

Option 4. Little Rock is only about 4 hours from Memphis, and if you can make it there, you have a whole world of barbecue, blues, and tradition to check out. I can't say much about Memphis, but if you are looking for someplace big to go have some fun, this would be it.

i have questions about Bull Shoals Lake Resort?!?!?

Baby

Well me and my mom want to go on a vacation and we been looking. I came across Bull Shoals Lake but i was wondering the atractions near and around. Also if its a good area to go, we will be going on the arkansas side instead of missouri. Also i was wondering if you could fload in a tube on the lake . i heard there was a river but im not sure so please help me :)
so any info you have is helpful please and thank you :)

Answer
Bull Shoals is a large Corps of Engineers lake on the white river. There are about 45K surface acres of water at normal pool, but the water is very high this year so the lake has much more surface area. The water is clear and very deep. There would not be much good area for floating on a tube unless you go up to the start of the lake near Forsyth. The only down side of this is that the outflow from Table Rock lake and Lake Taneycomo will make the water temperature much colder the closer you get to the headwaters. Forsyth is close to Branson where you will find lots of entertainment, hotel and eating options. There are lots of camp grounds on both the Missouri and Arkansas sides of the lake, some with marinas where you can rent boats. This is a very rustic/natural lake, so there are not a lot of options on the main lake short of fishing, scuba diving, swimming and boating.

I am fairly new to camping, I have been out a few times. I am a hiker, kayaker and general lover of all things outdoors. i am looking for a place in Wisconsin to either hike or kayak and then be able to set up a small camp wherever I feel like. Not a public type campground with outlets and showers.

Please any info would be very appreciated.

Answer
Hi,

In most of Wisconsin, the southern 2/3 anyway, the only camping areas are state parks or private campgrounds - both of which designate where you can camp, but they aren't all over-crowded. And even in Kettle Moraine North - they have shelters for you to stay in, and you need to have a permit, etc. I don't believe they allow dispersed camping in that park either.

When you get into northern Wisconsin, you can hit the Nicolet National Forest, and there are plenty of remote / rustic sites that will leave you with few if any neighbors. Check with the local rangers about dispersed camping here, as I think there are only loose guidelines in site selection there.

The ultimate trip, of course, would be up in the Apostle Islands. There you could kayak and hike to your heart's content, hike and camp, and howl with the wolf pack!

You can canoe / kayak camp on the lower 100 miles of the Wisconsin River; from Sauk City on down, you can camp on any sandbar you come across - and there are some excellent spots. No permits are required, the only rules the DNR worry about is to make sure you don't bring glass with you on the river.

And the St. Croix river has canoe camping; I haven't had the good fortune to paddle it, but I believe the campsites are established sites, with picnic tables and fire rings. (no vehicle access though, from what I gather).

Buckhorn State Park on Castle Rock lake is a great option too. They have numerous hike-to sites. Not exactly backpacking on a trail, but you hike in up to a mile to get to your campsite. They have pit toilets nearby, but no showers and RV generators to deal with. The park is on Castle Rock Lake, and all kinds of boats are able to access some of their shoreline campsites. There are numerous bars / restaurants nearby, so you may hear bands / noise from across the lake when you're at a shoreline site. You can kayak in however, and hike in the park.

Have fun!

Hotels in Branson missouri that are cheap?

My family and I are planning on going to Branson in July sometime and I was wondering what are some cheap but nice hotels around...

Answer
Better than hotels.com....Expedia.com is better.

I've been to Branson MANY times.

A good way to get CHEAP stay and show tickets is to sign up for a time-share sales presentation. Yeah, you gotta suffer through 2-hours of high-pressure sales tactics but hold your ground if your not interested and you'll still get your show tickets and cheap lodging.

If that's not your cup of tea...

Depending on where you want to go and do, EconoLodge Branson West is furthest from downtown Branson, but closer to Silver Dollar City. I paid less than $70/night...and it's not the greatest place either.

Howard Johnsons is close to downtown without being on the strip. It's high on a hill near the wax museum. I stayed there in early June a few years ago and got a room for less than $80/night and was VERY nice.

I heard Mountain Music Inn is nice too. My parents stay there a lot.

The cheapest place to stay would be to camp out (pop up camper or tent) on Table Rock Lake at Baxter campgrounds.

I grew up camping on the lake; as an adult, I stay in the hotels because I don't feel like hauling all my camping gear 4.5 hours just for two nights.

As for restaurants...you can't go wrong with Ruby Tuesdays and Cracker Barrel. Dockers is a terrible place. My husband and I got sick on Thanksgiving food there. We later heard from many locals the place was bad. I think they were closed for good the last time I was in Branson

Good luck and have fun.

My husband and I are 30 and 26 respectively and our anniversary is coming up in a few weeks. Considering I have been laid off we need to keep the celebration modest, but would like to do something. Any ideas besides the obvious free way to celebrate an anniversary :) ?

Answer
Located adjacent to Table Rock Lake and near Branson, Mo., one of the hottest tourism spots in the United States, "Table Rock State Park" offers easy lake access and is a short drive to area attractions and entertainment.

Places to stay in Branson for 10 or more people?

MB-n-KC

I'm going with my in laws. We would like to all be in the same building. The most important thing is that its not fancy or to pricey. No camping in tents.

Answer
Green valley resort, it's more like small cottages, its not fancy just little four room block houses, it's nice for families, shade and picnic tables. It's a drive from Branson but still worth it, it's also on Table Rock Lake.
