need help getting started collecting camping equipment?

al819604

My fiance and I are registering on Amazon.com for our wedding because we want to build some a supply of camping gear. It's me, him, and our 4 year old. We need a tent, coleman stove, you name it. I just don't know where to start. I want to get quality stuff so any advice would be appreciated to get started. We probably will mostly do "car camping" to start, where you park right near your camp site. If someone has a list of stuff I could register for, that would be great. I remember my mom taking us all the time when we were little, and this is a tradition I would like to carry on. We really need help on choosing the right coleman stove and a tent! We probably will register for cots too. ( a luxury I didn't have as a kid. ha ha.

Answer
A large air bed is better than a cot by far. A small (3-4 man) double wall, free standing dome type tent (with a full fly that reaches the ground, none of those little tiny flies just on the tip) for sleeping only, and a larger screen tent to go over or near the picnic table, where you'll spend a lot of time, would be nice. Folding chairs are sturdier than those fold up chairs if you have room to pack them. You'll want a good thick cooler, and two burner Coleman stove, and decent sleeping bags, not cotton but 100% synthetic. Always get the smallest, least fancy item, you might need, not the most complicated, but the most traditional and not the biggest and most expensive.

Coleman stoves and coolers are good but tents and sleeping bags are not their forte. A better bet would be to register at REI.

This air bed will fit into this tent:

Any suggestions on a camping themed wedding?

Supercalif

I've decided to have a camping themed wedding (me and my husband-to-be LOVE camping). Does anyone have any good ideas for a menu, favors, flowers, decorations, etc? Our budget is really small (round-abouts $4000 for 50 people) so I'm prepared to be doing a lot of DIY-type stuff.
Not a formal event - I'll be wearing a wedding dress but it'll be a short one. We're going to be doing the ceremony and reception at a campground, I just need ideas for a menu, favors, flowers, decorations, etc.

Answer
well i think best in order of events so here i go...
Ceremony:
-at the end of the aisle you could have a ton of candles framing around where you'll stand, or if you want to go all out have a standing arch with flowers in you colors (to keep costs down make sure the flowers you choose from are in season)
- wedding program: either way id do DIY something simple- one sheet in a subtle color of your choice and leave it like that , or roll it up and type it together with cheap, but pretty, ribbon and stick those in a basket for guest to pick up as they go to their seats
-sunblock: you could rent large umbrellas to place over the seated area in case of sun like these:
http://www.apartycenter.com/umbrellas.shtml
or you could give them individual paper parasols (it would be costly, but would double as your party favor
http://www.lunabazaar.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=220
--------------these are not necessary, but are good incentives----------

Reception:
table set-up/decor: for centerpieces you can go to a florist, but i'd 1st check out your garden for filler flowers, like hydrangeas and then you could add extra things like branches coming out of the top, or limes in the vase, or you could just put them in a silver bucket from the dollar store/ dollar tree. Another option would be to buy tons of baby's breath and put them in a vase and then tie a ribbon in your choice of a color around the vase into a nice bow. Just play around with cheap/yet elegant filler flowers until you find something you like.( if you need inspiration just google image whatever flower you choose and add centerpiece to the end. here are some websites with filler flowers:
http://www.flower-arrangement-advisor.com/filler-flowers.html
http://www.save-on-crafts.com/usfocfilandl.html

-LIghting: i know that lighting isn't probably the first thing you think of when it comes to decorating your reception, but nothing can hurt a beautiful wedding reception more the florescent lighting. Good lighting really sets the right tone, so if you can spend the extra money on up-lighting i'd encourage it. But if you can't don't worry candles, and christmas lights are also great for this too, just gather up all christmas lights you have, your parents have, your friends have, your neighbors have,... you get the picture. DON'T buy any lights until you've exhausted your resources, almost everyone has christmas lights, and if you give them some heads up, and ask nicely there really is no reason you should have to buy new ones. One last addition for some lighting would be lanterns like these:

- Food if you and your family want to make the entire dinner the night before great!!! However, along with everything else you'll probably have to do that might be a bit much, i think that this is the time that you can call in a caterer
- cake/dessert: a wedding cake is traditional, but if you want to try some

- Favors: here are a couple ideas
~ baby tree(seedlings), or any other plant wedding favor
http://www.plantamemory.com/
~wild flower seeds
~chocolates, maple syrup, candle, candle holder, ect
http://www.myweddingfavors.com/

I really hope this helps
sorry for all the spelling errors,i know there's a ton of them i'm writing this at like 4 in the morning

good luck with everything!

How do I create a good art show set-up?

gal friday

I'm new to the juried art show world, and I've got one coming up in December. I need a 10x10 booth, which I have to make myself, which also needs to be covered... Finding a camping cover-up that size shouldn't be difficult, but what's a good idea for the walls to hang my paintings upon? It needs to be effective as well as look pleasant.

Answer
Not sure if your art is themed or not, so if you'd need a different background for various paintings, but if you do, try this as a lightweight, easy to assemble/take down & carry to different shows:

1. Use PVC tubing & union joints to build 3 frame walls
that are as tall as you need

2. Find a solid color fabric you like & drape it over each
wall. (You can vary the color/texture/etc. if you want.)
This will give you privacy & define your space. If you
need some extra space to hang small, lightweight
sketches, use double-sided tape to adhere the fabric
draped over the back of your frame, then a small tab
on the back of each sketch to adhere it to the front
for display.

3. Get some room dividers that match each theme of
your paintings. If the divider is fabric covered, use
curtain hooks to hang your pictures; if its wood, use
screw in hooks; if its plastic/vinyl, use 3M hangers;
etc. (Rember to bring a small tackle box you can
keep under your chair with extra hangers, scissors,
tape, etc.)

4. You could lean larger, framed paintings against the
legs of the table you set-up in a corner of your 10 x
10 booth + set-up a couple easels in other corners.

Not knowing exactly the size/weight/medium of your paintings its difficult to give you just one idea. I hope at least one of these helps you think of a way to display your art.

Can anyone name theis movie from the 60s for me?

Princess

Ok, I have a framed movie still with a female sitting on the edge of a billiards table. The movie info is as follows: Leigh Taylor Young, as a man shredding shrew, plans to put Ryan O'Neal directly behind the eight ball in this drama. So, what is this drama they are speaking of?

Answer
"The Big Bounce"(1969)

PLOT SUMMARY:"Jack Ryan is a young Vietnam veteran with a criminal record, who gets fired from his job as a migrant laborer on a California produce farm run by the mean-spirited camp manager Bob Rodgers. Ryan then meets and teams up with the seductive Nancy Barker the secretary and mistress to the unscrupulous owner Ray Ritchie. When Ryan takes another job as a cleaner at a local motel owned by Sam Mirakian a local justice-of-the-peace, Nancy again approaches Ryan to help her rob Ritchie's safe in his house which allegedly has $50,000 of payroll money. Ryan reluctantly agrees to help with the heist, but becomes highly distrustful of Nancy, suspecting she may double-cross him to keep all the money for herself, and vice versa with her over him."

Summer

I saw this large end table in a thrift store and it had spring like things that held the top up so it doubled as a dining room table. Does anyone know where to find these online? Or what they are technically called? Thanks a bunch!

How much would you guess a 3 horse steel living quarters trailer weighs?

Destiny

A solid steel, 3 horse trailer with living quarters. BIG trailer, probably 30ft long. Horse area around 7x7 or maybe a little bigger.

If any of you have steel trailers and could make a weight guess, I just want to get a ballpark idea.

How much would it weigh empty? How much would you say it would weigh with three horses, loaded water tanks, and camping gear?

Answer
Did a brief google, and found 3 which look like aluminum:

10,400 pounds: http://sandwfeeds.com/gooseneck-horse-trailers/lq-horse-trailer-for-sale-43567.html

http://sandwfeeds.com/2-horse-trailers/2-horse-exiss-lq-trailer-for-sale-43685.html

14,000 pounds: http://sandwfeeds.com/3-horse-trailers/3-horse-lq-trailer-for-sale-44304.html

An all steel model will be substantially heavier. Even these trailers are too heavy to be pulled by a pickup truck, and would need a special truck for hauling. Even a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup cannot safely haul these weights.

You would also have to add weight for:

3 people (500 pounds)
3 horses (3,000 pounds)
gear/water/etc. (1,000 pounds)

That would be my rough guesstimate.

Edit: Found another interesting website

http://www.nyshc.org/currentissues/CDL%20Requirements%20for%20Horse%20Trailers.pdf

that says:

"TABLE OF GVW AND TRAILER WEIGHT COMBINATIONS
TOW VEHICLE AND TRAILER COMBINATIONS
GVWRâS FOR PICKUPS (CHEVY USED FOR ILLUSTRATION)
1500 SERIES (Known as ½ ton) 7000 lbs
2500 SERIES (Known as 3/4 ton) 8600 lbs
3500 SERIES (Known as 1 ton) 11,400 lbs

TRAILER WEIGHTS

The weights shown here are from Double D Trailers in North Carolina. I use them because the trailer they make is made of steel and are heavyweight trailers.

I also have used the tack room style or living quarters style because they are the heaviest. If someone is using a pure stock trailer, it will be lighter in weight.

2 Horse Trailer with Tack Room 4400 lbs
3 Horse Trailer with Tack Room 5100 lbs
4 Horse Trailer with Tack Room 5500 lbs
3 Horse Trailer with Living Quarters * 11,500 lbs

*This is a monster, fully equipped.

Combination weights

Normal situation.
2500 Pickup plus 3 horse trailer plus 3 horses
8600 + 5100 + 3300 = 17,000 lbs

Extreme Case
3500 Pickup plus 3 horse with LQ plus 3 horses
11,400 + 11,500 + 3300 = 26,200"

This is from the New York Farm Board, which should be a good source.
