what material should be used for a work bench?

Q. I'm building a work/hobby bench and am looking for some recommendations on what material I should consider that will provide a durable /low maintance top.

Answer
The top surface should be durable yet easy to use. If you sit down to work, the height should be the same as your kitchen table; about 30". If you stand up to work, I use 42" since I am tall, but if you are short (Height challenged) you may like something around 36" like your kitchen cabinet bases. I do jewelry avd stained glass. For jewelry, I sit and for stained glass, I stand. You might consider a combination bench with two heights.
I use white-painted homosote glued and screwed onto heavy plywood on a two by four frame for my bench tops. I paint my walls and ceilings white too. It increases your ability to see. If you need clarification, send me an e-mail.

I need to be able to bench more then I do. Can you help?

Q. I found out today that i need to be able to bench more but i dont have a bench press......i have weights but what kind of workouts should i do to be able to bench more??

Answer
The Boi's right; dumbell exercises can be just as good.

But not having a bench is still a problem. Lying on the floor, you can't get your elbows as low as you can on the bench. This will interfere with your flyes as well as your press.

You might be able to press ok if you 'jack up' your upper back on a stack of phone directories or large-format books, or a reading/milking/piano/step stool. You can also improvise with strong wooden or metal boxes, such as large toolboxes. The 'ammo box' shape can work really well, but might need plenty of padding (camping mat?).

If your improvised 'bench' is too short to support your whole torso, your 'core' will benefit from the effort of keeping your body straight (buttocks off the floor at same height as shoulders) while you press.

Pressups CAN be as effective as bench-pressing, but this only usually happens when you add weight, by wearing a weighted (discs, potatoes, water, sand, etc) backpack, and vary the weight to keep your training sets short.

'Decline' pressups (feet gradually more and more raised, on chair, table, windowsill, mantel-shelf, stepladder, etc) can also add power to your 'benching' ability.

'Air' or 'Marine-style' pressups can also increase the explosive power of the muscles that you use for bench-press.

What are the variables in this science experiment?

What are science variables? I only know what controlled variables are.

I have this experiment where we need to find out how tempreture effect the time it taken to dissolve a table spoon of jelly crystals.

I need to find the variables.

For the controlled variable i need 4 and i have three of them. What could be my last one.

I have:
The amount of water, the amount of Jelly Crystals, The flavour of Jelly Crystal,

What is a thrid one?

Answer
1)Amount of stirring. ( Must be the same each time )
2)Bowl in which the mixing is done. ( the same bowl each time )
3)Temperature of the surroundings. ( the surrounding temperature will influence heat flow into and out of the dissolving jelly. It must be kept constant for each reading. )

And your first 2 ( the most important ones). I'd suggest dropping the flavour of jelly crystal, and my number 3, unless you are going to give all 6 variables.
It is usually a good idea to give more variables than are asked for, but not to give wildly silly ones ( like time of day, or height of kitchen bench ....). I'm not sure about flavour if crystal - I would actually try out a couple and see if it really needs controlling for - that would show good thinking and keenness.

I'd like to build a work bench in my garage. I don't want one that has a peg board in the back, but I'd want to have probably two shelves below the work surface. Where can I find a good design that I could use or alter?

Answer
Most workbenches are merely gorified sawhorses with a top and can be incredibly simple to build. The easiest way to do it is just measure the length you want your table top and cut that length of ledger (2x4 or 2x6), attach it to the wall securely at the height you want the table minus the thickness of the top. I usually made the top out of a double box style frame made out of 2x4s on edge, and stabilized it with a sheet of 5/8 plywood (attaching a frame to sheething is a great way to stabilize the structure since you can screw it down around the edges and in the field and it is a solid peice of CDX). then you simply use two 4x4s (or 2x4s and bracing) for the front legs and attach the back to the ledger. voila! You can even hinge the back so that you can fold it up when you want, providing you relief the rear frame stud and bevel the side ones, and install two box brackets to place the legs in so that they can be slid out easily and set against the wall.

Can I use a pub height bench at a gathering height table?

justme

I recently purchased a gathering height table for my kitchen. Can I use a "pub height" bench with it?

Answer
Gathering table height is usually counter height - 36". Pub height is generally 40". So a bench made for pub height is going to really cramp your leg room at a gathering table. Look for counter height instead.

How tall should a kitchen chair be?

I would love to use two benches (below) with cushions on them, but are they too short? I will be using a standard sized kitchen table. The benches are 16" in height.
( http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&navAction=jump&id=17093501&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS&color=000 )

Thanks!

Answer
Standard kitchen tables are 30 inches high. standard chairs are 18 - 19 inches. The skirt board that goes around the bottom of the table top varies with manufactures, and effects leg room. Average leg room needed is 8 inches. Measure this from top of chair seat to bottom of skirting. Don't forget cushion thickness, as you need the 8 inches to top of cushion, if you use cushions on top of chairs.
