ideas about making tables out of random things?

Q. recently i saw a coffee table made out of old pallets and i was wanting to make a coffee table out of something you wouldnt normally see..Im looking for a colorful/modern type of look! Any ideas??

Answer
Yes, I full agree that you can make tables using old pallets. Old pallets and be used for many things.
We have three medium sized tables on our rap around deck out side that husband made from wood he collected from different places when we still had our out-door wood burner. I'd see a piece of wood that I knew had potential for a table and the work began. We have been using them for at least five years now. Simply made, but very durable. Just the thing needed for end tables for an out door deck. I like the the rustic look anyway so they fit in great for there use. Husband also made a table and small simple benches to use around our fire pit.

You are saying that you're looking for something that is colorful and modern looking. Any wood can be painting, but I don't know about the moder look when talking pallets.

Have you considered using a large foot rest that you can use for both foot rest and coffee table. This kind of thing is used all the time. You get two for the price of one. I always liked the idea, but it just wouldn't work with my house, but could with yours. Something to consider. Perhaps you could go hunting to second hand stores for a medal framed table on the modern side. Even if you would have to replace the glass it still might be worth purchasing with the frame is cheap enough to re-due.

Get out there a hunt second hand shops, rummage sales, even Goodwill stores. You never know what you can find at half or less the price than new. Bring in home and begin your project. Always be sure before you buy. You don't want to wind up with three different things that you decide you can't use. Get a picture in you mind of what you looking for. It's out there waiting for you. I've re-done and old cart on wheels for use in my kitchen. I'm sure you can find something to use for a coffee table. After you re-do it, now you can call it your own, and it's brand new again. It's fun to see something old come to life again. Good luck.

Experienced Mums, advice on toddler table please?

Q. Hi there,

I'm wanting to buy my 16 month old his first table and chairs. There are just soooo many to choose from! So I'm wondering your thoughts on what's good and bad eg

Round table vs square

Wood vs plastic

Bench style / picnic table or individual chairs (with backs or just stools?)

Are the ones with the built in bowl in the middle useful (to put crayons etc in)

Did u get one with drawers or not?

Anything to add that's helpful much appreciated!

PS - I'm in Australia

Thank you!

Answer
I like the square tables- they're easier to put in an out of the way corner!
Wooden ones look nicer, but the plastic ones do less damage to rough and tumble kids who run into them.
Individual chairs, I prefer backs but my son doesn't care.
I haven't purchased one with the built in bowl so I can't really say how good that is!
The ones we have don't have drawers (yes we have several!)
My mum has the Ikea Mammut table and stools for her place, my son really likes them. http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/30176644

At our place we have a square plastic table chairs that my MIL picked up from cheapie shop, my son loves that he can drag them all over the house. We also have a metal set purchased from a garden shop for outside use. We are looking at buying the Lego table for him too- he has a HUGE collection of Lego from his fathers childhood, plus hand me down Lego from his cousins.

I am wanting to build a simple square work table. I want good stability and don't want a junky look to it. The maximum load I would put on it would be about 250 lbs. Will be indoor use only. Needing help on what type/kind of wood to pickup at the hardware store. Any suggestions?

Answer
What you can use is 3/4" plywood. If it's a work table, look for a pretty smooth sheet of CDX - it's cheap.

Something to think about with a work table is that it should be extremely heavy - this way you can pull and haul on it and not have it dancing around the room. So if you do need a very heavy table, make the legs out of a many 2x4's as possible - bolt them together.

One trick we used in the shop was to make the bench out of big 4x6 beams - and then on top of that two layers of particle board just for weight - then on top of that you nail a sheet of 1/8" Masonite for your surface. Once you screw up your surface enough, you just rip it off and put on another. This way you can have a nice clean table.

Has anyone seen the Picnic tables that fold into benches?

ChayChay

My uncle has a few of these things. They are two benches that have hinges and they fold together to make a picnic table. I soooo want one of these. My husband is very handy and with his fathers cabinet shop, i'm sure he could make it. Does anyone know where I could get the template to this? Or does anyone know how and could tell me how to make it? I have a lot of kids and this would be perfect for our porch!

Answer
I know what you are talking about, there are no patterns available that I know of. It isn't that complex, a handy person can make their own.

How much SHOPPING money should I take to the Philippines?

I'm going to the Philippines for the summer. Everything is paid for and set, I'm just wondering how much SHOPPING money I should bring. I'll be staying for about a month there, but I'm staying in Manila for about two weeks. That's when I'm going to the mall and stuff, the other times I'm going to be in the islands.

Answer
That will depend entirely on what you intend to buy.

Make your own estimate:

1. International brand clothes/bags/shoes are more expensive here, so take that out of your list
2. Local brand but good quality clothes (Bench, penshoppe, etc) will cost about half vs cost of similar type of clothes in the US.
3. Good quality (locally made) shoes can cost about a quarter or a third vs US prices
4. Silver jewelry here is a bargain.
5. Gold jewelry here is probably at the same cost as anywhere else, because gold is an international "currency"
6. Local handicraft are of excellent quality. Visitors buy table runners, napkins etc because of the exquisite craftsmanship and I am told they can cost as much as only 20% versus similar products in the USA.
