I have a Weber q portable grill and don't want to spend money on their stand since it seems expensive for what you get. I'm wondering if it's safe to put it on an outdoor table, and what material, glass, wood or plastic (I imagine plastic wouldn't be good). I want to use it in my backyard but not on the floor.

Answer
I wouldn't put it on my glass outdoor furniture, afraid it might get too hot and crack. I have a metal utility table I use for the portable grill. Wood could scorch and, of course, plastic is a no-no. If you have a wood table, placing a few cement blocks under the grill would protect the table. good luck.

I have a large patio and I like to hang out with my friends. In'm looking for free plans for a simple outdoor table.

Answer
=== use the search web line and enter words as follows ++ how to build a picnic table with benches ++ this will get you good plans -- videos -- info AND these plans are simple and this can be done in a week-end === some of the hardware giants will loan free or rent to you a belt sander to finish the benches and the table === a good double coat [[ several weeks apart ]] of oil base enamel paint will help you preserve the wood and help to make it almost water-proof --- good project and use bolts with lock nuts to prevent wobbly benches or table wobble .... have some BBQ for me ...

I am having second graders each paint a tile, which will then be put onto an iron table with a wood top. I do not have a kiln. I would like to use a paint that will withstand weather.
What paint would be best?
What type of sealer should I use?
Can I tile directly onto the wood top?
Someone told me I should bake the painted tiles in my oven, should I?
Please help, this project is for a school auction. Thanks.

Answer
I would call your local Michael's or other large craft store and ask them for help. There are special paints you can bake in an ordinary oven - some you cannot! You will definitely have to apply a sealer.

What type of wood for outdoor furniture?

I want to build a simple outdoor picnic table and use pine (mostly 2x4) for construction because it is inexpensive. I plan to set it on my backyard lawn, so it will be exposed to moisture and sunlight. Question is, if I stain & protect it, will it last just as long as other higher quality woods like redwood and cedar? Thanks.

Answer
The pine, properly stained, sealed, and protected, should last a good long while. Especially important is to guard the footings of the table and/or benches; wherever it comes in contact with the ground, lingering moisture will tend to invade the wood. Likewise, give the table a very slight slant and enough gaps to drain quickly and easily, to avoid any standing water.
However, with equal treatments on various types of wood, pine is still not the equal of redwood or cedar. Cedar, for example, possesses a natural chemical resistance to insects and rot that makes it last considerably longer.
Given how expensive the higher-quality woods are, it might be worthwhile to make a pine table and replace it after a few years, once it starts to decay.
