Any tips on adult socializing with a baby along?

outdoor restaurant tables on Outdoor Dining & Parties: Part I

I am thinking of young babies, primarily.

What are some activities that are easy to do with the baby along? Which ones would you avoid altogether? (Going to the movies will definitely be out.)

Do you have any tips to keep the baby happy without making your childless friends feel uncomfortable or left out? (One thing I've already learned by witnessing it is NOT to change a diaper at the restaurant table. Less obvious tips would be welcome.)

Anyone saying "just hire a babysitter" will be ineligible for Best Answer. I've already thought of that one.

Answer
Tips:

- Don't go places where there is a reasonable expectation of quiet behavior (movie theaters, elegant restaurants, plays etc). Even a good baby will probably cry at some point, and it's not fair to other guests. Casual/noisy restaurants, friends' houses and outdoor settings - like parks and pools - are best!

- Make flexible plans with larger groups of people. That way, you're not leaving somebody waiting if your baby's long nap has you running late... or leaving somebody high and dry if the baby has a meltdown and you have to take off early.

- Invite people over! It's important to socialize, but sometimes the most relaxing way to do it is to just stay put and have people over. You can still get your adult interaction time without having to pack up a mountain of baby supplies!

What are those outdoor restaurants in the old west?

In the movies you sometimes see some type of outdoor setup where they're feeding a bunch of people at "picnic" tables. They got a sign up that says 'Dinner $3' and such. Is there a special name for these restaurants, and are they like that because they couldn't afford to build a structure or because they're on the move?

Answer
I would call them the cookhouses, they were usually just put together so that they could serve meals quickly and the owners of the cookhouses were always on the move. When the miners went to California these people followed, set up the cookhouses and fed the miners, others set up bars/saloons.

Why do they insist on walking them without a leash??
Or bringing them into a store?
Or tying them next to their outdoor table at a restaurant?

It's not cute. It just points out that you are an insecure, pathetic attention whore.
WOW! No wonder everyone is so concerned with US education. Everyone who has responded so far is a moron...no comprehension skills.

I did NOT say dogs are annoying - I LOVE dogs. I have always had 6-8 of them...all rescues. However, I am never annoying and tacky with them as described above.
Oh wait, Tawat_C did understand my issue. Thank you for being the one who finished high school out of this group.
PsychGrad: You are dumb. As much as I love dogs, they are not children. Second, you like the others, do not understadn the issue I am presenting - I like dogs but it is actually highly inconsiderate to walk them without a leash or take them into a store.

Dogs are driven by instincts becasue they are not human - HELLO! And they could decide to run after or bite someone with no apparent reason to you. Also if I am eating or shopping I don't want your dogs fur or fleas jumping around me. Gross. And I don't care how clean, you think your dog is - he is NOT to someone else. Face it , you want attention.

Answer
They are not considerate.

Does anybody know a restaurant in Chicago where smoking cigars is allowed?

Alex

I would like to go with some friends to have a nice dinner, drink premium wine and smoke fine cigars, however, last January smoking in restaurants was banned in Chicago... I was wondering if anybody knew of a "cigar smokers friendly" restaurant or, at least, of a restaurant with outdoor tables (maybe by the lake or in some nice place) where we could still smoke our cigars...

Answer
None.. It's the law... no smoking in public places 15 ft away from the building man!!!!!
