I want to glue pictures to ceramic tile and grout in onto a cement table to put outside. Any ideas?

Answer
glue the picture that you like to the suface of each tile, then use a multiflex thinset to adhere to the concrete bench. (ultraflex II is great, available at lowes.) grout 24 hours after the last tile is set, then i would paint a coat of varnish or shalack over the entire surface to protect the pictures and grout. good luck.

Part 2: This part will be submitted as 01.03b Archaeology and Anthropology Part 2. Because of your expertise in archaeology, you have just been asked to assist with the assessment of a recent find for a new exhibit at the Museum. Unfortunately, your observers at the site only have access to a fax machine. They have faxed you the following description of the site:

*

This site was discovered outdoors in an uncovered area.
*

The site includes a circular concrete object 3' 6" high and 5' in diameter, with a base underneath which connects to the ground.
*

The circular concrete object has another concrete object of much smaller proportions on each side of it.
*

The two smaller objects are 1 and 1/2' high, 5' in length and curved in a half-moon shape.
*

Each of the two smaller objects also has an extension underneath that allows the object to rest upon a flat area made up of red bricks.
*

The red bricks cover a space of 20' by 30'.

These artifacts were found at the site:

*

Two small square objects with a thin wax coating. The objects have small spout openings with a strong smell permeating from the interior.
*

Three cylinder shaped metal objects small and light enough to hold in one hand. Ants are crawling inside and out of each object.
*

One hard-paper covered object containing hundreds of individual slices inside. Pictures, writings, and maps are on the slices.
*

One additional hard-paper covered object containing individual slices with numbers and writings on each of the slices.
*

One soft, crumpled, paper object with a small amount of rose coloring.
*

Five metal objects with jagged edges secured on a small metal ring.

Now that you have read the information provided by your observers, the Director has asked you to come up with your own hypothesis concerning this site. Please note, this assignment requires you to use your imagination. There are no right or wrong answers in your identifications, as long as you provide a logical hypothesis including each of the objects. Your presentation is very important. You should record your findings and submit answers to the following questions in a report to the "Director of the Museum."

Items that must be in your report:

*

An answer to the question, "What is a hypothesis?"
*

An assessment of each of the objects. Identify what you think each object is.
*

A time period associated with the objects.
*

The name or type of site you are viewing.
*

An answer to the following questions:
o

Were the objects at the site left by people?
o

If so, how many people were present?
o

Can you determine the gender of the people?
* A suggested scenario or story representing how the objects were left behind. Be thorough, logical, and creative.

Answer
What we found is a 20' by 30' patio with a concrete table and two 5' benches. We found 3 beverage cans, two milk cartons, a geography book, a math book, a tissue, and a set of keys. It appears that 3 students were there in a time when concrete outdoor tables were used. Probably in the 50's and 60's when milk was still sold in wax covered cartons. It is our hypothesis that this was a study area for students. This hypothesis is a conclusion based on the evidence we observed.

What colors are best for my humble patio furniture?

Q. I am moving into a home with a cute little side, covered patio. It is rectangular with several small trees on the side. Nothing special. Just some concrete and a wood cover. I currently own some nice deep green plastic chairs and a white bench with table. What colors would you recommend spray painting them? All the same color or separate? Dark wicker planters, stone planters, and a medium stone waterfall will be coming with me as well. Thank you!

Answer
Either match the green or beige, white shows dirt so much. If they are nice and pretty now then don't spray paint them until the need to have a nice little touch up to look new again. Does the wood cover need to be treated yet? If so, a nice red cedar finish with the other stuff painted to match would look good.

Should I sue for my sons injury he recieved at a fast food playground?

Mikey

My 4yr old fell and hit the side of his face on the concrete benches used for seats on the outside playground. This caused at least a half inch laceration starting at the corner of his mouth going back into his cheek. When I went into the restaurant for help there was no sense of urgency from the employees. I had to ask twice for a cup to put ice in and when I asked for the first aid kit I never received one but was told it would be a moment while the employees were casually talking with each other about other things. The customers jumped up to help though which was nice. We ended up just leaving and rushing him to the ER because we were not receiving any help there. The end result was the next day my 4yr old needed plastic surgery on his cheek and is now sick because he can't eat but still has to take pain medication on an empty stomach.

Answer
It depends on what he fell from. If he fell from playground equipment, you might have a case. If he fell from a table, you have no case at all. But you should complain to the fast food company about the attitude of their workers.

Is there anything that is naturally straight or naturally round, or is just man-made?

I've always been curious about it, please answer, I want different viewpoints.
BTW, I mean perfectly straight or perfectly round.

Answer
Plenty of round in Nature
a lot depends on the perspective or distance of observation
this planet and others look round from a distance ,but closer up they are not
this also works on a small scale

many creatures have round eggs especially reptiles ,but from very close up they are wobbly round
Oval is more common

But almost nothing is absolutely unbroken straight .
there are plenty of straight trees and stalks ,that look straight from a distance ,but close up
there are always knots or spiraling branches

Nature does not have square ,rectangle or square corners.

In my concrete furniture designs, that i use in gardens
all my tables and benches have roundish corners .

What paint do I use on a concrete three tier water fountain and concrete outdoor patio table and benches?

Answer
I am a landscape contractor that specializes in water features, and if there is no paint on the concrete as of now, I would go to your local brick and stone supply company and purchase a gallon of acid stain for concrete. The good thing about the coloring of portland cement of concrete in this manner is that it is permanent and wont ever flake off as will happen eventually with most all paints. There are many colors available and most are along the browntones to blues and greens.

You then buy a cheap 1 gallon pump up sprayer and put a small amount of the acid in it along with some water to dillute. I usually dillute to start, just to have more control of the color. If you have another piece of statuary to test the color on, it would be helpful, otherwise just spray it on and let it sit for a few minutes and hose it off. You can repeat this step and or let it sit longer to make it a darker hue. Also not dilluting will also work faster and darker.

If there are plants and grass around it, just hose it down to dillute the acid to a non destructive level. Be careful with overspray and dont use this on a windy day as whatever it touches, including you, will be colored and it will burn your skin on contact.

Should I take a day trip to Molokai or Lanai?

Going back to Maui for the 2nd time and I'd like to take a day trip by ferry to either Molokai or Lanai. Which island is a better choice to visit and why?

Answer
Those two islands are very different! Both of them have very small populations--neither island has more than one public high school. Transportation to both of them is a little tricky. You'll need to ride either a prop plane or a ferry to get to either one. The ferry ride to Lanai is shorter, cheaper, and smoother if that makes a difference to you.

You start to see the difference when you fly into the airports. LNY is small, but air conditioned and modern. You have to walk down steps when you deplane in either airport, but at MKK, the gate you walk through is literally a chain-link gate. Molokai's airport terminal is little more than a shed, about the length of a high school gym, with four signs hanging on the side: baggage claim, check in, snack bar, and air freight. Plenty of people walk right past the baggage claim on Molokai, maybe because it's a wide concrete bench, maybe because there are usually people sitting on it.

98% of Lanai is owned by a company called Castle & Cooke. There are two luxury resorts, and almost everybody lives in a small village in the center of the island, all neat and quaint with cute boutiques and cafes. Most of the population of the island is of Filipino descent. The local school benefits from corporate sponsorship when companies like Nike hold executive retreats there. When Bill Gates wanted to get married in a private ceremony, he simply paid for every hotel room on Lanai, and every commercial plane ticket in or out that weekend.

Several miles away on Molokai, more than half the total population is of Native Hawaiian descent, and more than three quarters of the schoolkids. The largest tourist attraction is what they used to call a leper colony. A couple dozen Hansen's Disease patients still live on the Kalaupapa penninsula, at the bottom of a thousand foot cliff. Visits to Kalaupapa are tightly controlled, unless you have a sponsor who lives down there.

On "Topside" Molokai, several activist families work hard to chase away anything that looks like mass tourism or overdevelopment--cruise ships for example. Because of their opposition to a proposed luxury residential development that would leave a footprint bigger than the island's largest town, the largest employer on the island shut down the 18-hole golf course, the only movie theater, the hotel with the island's only elevator, and a popular restaurant and bar in 2008. Many of the island's residents make their living through a combination of farming, hunting, fishing, and bartering, and they raise their children to be proud they can live off the land.

There is only one hotel on the island, but when you are in the restaurant, looking out to sea, hearing local characters like Uncle Mel and Larry laugh and joke at the bar, watching somebody's auntie get up and dance hula to live music, it seems that the buildings of the Hotel Molokai are the only buildings in the world.

Meanwhile, up the hill, among the picnic tables outside the Kualapuu Cookhouse, it's Thursday night: prime rib night. Local folks who still have grease stains on their shirts from work have brought ukuleles and a washtub bass to play music just because they enjoy it. They've convinced Bruiser to come out of the kitchen and sing a Bruddah Iz song. You'll have to pop across the street to the market to buy a bottle of wine, but the food is fantastic!

Which island you prefer will be up to your personal preferences, but visiting either place takes careful planning. Transportation to either island is so limited that a high school sports tournament could prevent you from getting a ticket if you don't make reservations ahead of time.
