How do I talk my parents into getting me into martial arts?

Drew

I've been wanting to do Tiquando for a really long time and they said as soon as basket ball season was over then I could start and now that it's over they keep procrastinating on it. I called my local martial arts center and they said I get 3 free first lessons to see if I want to do it or not and my moms complaining about how expensive it'll be even though she hasn't even checked the prices and she has plenty of money. She payed for a basketball camp in the summer for me that was like $1700. And she's always blowing money on the stupidest things. She even bought a fake brass table for $700 dollars and got ripped off and didn't even take it back.

Answer
Talk about how much you want to do Taekwondo and you want to know to defend yourself in case someone attacks you in the street.
Sometimes it can be hard for parents letting their child do Martial Arts because some parents might think "they could get hurt" or "I don't want my child to fight" but it's really not about fighting as it is about defending yourself.

What digital picture frame would you buy and why?

tkept

I want to buy a digital picture frame and there are many to choose from. I want a 7 or 8 inch screen to put on a table. I am not interested in music in it. Considering price, picture clarity and user friendly, what are your suggestions, makes and models?

Answer
I like the classic look of this frame.

But, I would probably buy this one because it has a motion sensor which means I wouldn't have to turn it on or off all of the time.

There are a whole lot of other frames here. I highly recommend looking at the best rated ones and reading the reviews to see what other people have said about them.

How much does it cost to travel Europe?

Giuliana

Wondering how much it would cost for plane tickets, eating out, hotels, and renting cars and all that if my family and I were to travel Spain, Italy, France and Germany? Possibly the UK also. An estimated price of how much you think it would cost? Its just me my mom and dad. THANK YOU!

Answer
The actual price will depend on where you're starting from, exactly when you come to Europe, the kinds of places you stay in, how you get around and what you see, do and eat. Generally, you can get by for around $100 (plus airfare) staying in cheap hostels and watching your budget. However, if you're with you family, you'll probably be in hotels rather than hostels and that will be more expensive. I generally spend around 100 to 150 euro per night for the places I stay. There are usually s little cheaper budget options. Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip:

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around.

http://www.seat61.com/ - a great train site with details about railpasses. It can be cheaper to buy individual tickets than passes. This site will tell you how to determine whether you're better off with a railpass or individual tickets or some combination for your trip. It also details how to use the pass and what to avoid to get the best use out of a pass. Most high speed, international and night trains require reservations and will require you to pay a supplement when you use a railpass. You need to be aware that a railpass is almost always more expensive for trains here if you're going to exclusively travel in Italy. Trains are an excellent way to get around here. If you want cars, check sites like Avis, Europcar, Sixt. Be aware that drop off fees can be high if you rent a car in one crountry and leave it in another. You also need to know that you would need to buy a tax sticker for the windshield before driving on an autobahn in either Austria or Switzerland.

http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro ($49) a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro ($31 to $62) for a meal, but you can eat for less. I was in Venice recently and paid 32 euro for lunch at Da Raffaele sitting at a canal side table with the gondolas passing by. Here in Italy, You can get a whole pizza for 8 to 13 euro ($10 - $16) or a pasta dish in the same range. Panini or pizza by the slice is less. For reference, a McDonalds McMenu classico (medium) is going for around 7.50 euro ($9.24). While you can eat cheaply most of the time, I would recommend getting a good local meal from time to time; that's part of the overall experience that it would be a shame to miss. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants. Try the saltimboca or a pasta Cacio e Pepe in Rome.

What is the best thing you have ever purchased on eBay?

Doodle

And what made it a good deal? Was it the price? Thanks!

Answer
Trims and studs for sewing and decorating (my daughter does hand painted shirts, jeans)
MOSTLY items for my vintage trailer and for camping. The chairs I got were wonderful and it was free shipping. Got here in a wink of time (that's huge to me) and at least 15.00 UNDER all the prices I've found in stores and at Open Air markets for the same chairs. The aluminum roll up tables too- amazing

Where to go camping inexpensively and without a car near NYC?

km1312

Need a fairly cheap tent campground with basic bathroom and drinking water facilities near hiking trail(s). Looking to head there Friday evening after work and return Sunday evening on a train and/or bus.

Thanks!

Answer
Floyd Bennett Field
Manhattanites have always considered Brooklyn to be something of a wilderness, but it may still come as a surprise to learn that you can actually camp thereâand weâre not talking about sleeping on the sidewalk. This abandoned-airport-turned-national-park in Marine Park has room for about 100 campers, each site with a fire pit and picnic tableâand not much else. (It may be the only place in New York City where holes in the ground are considered acceptable bathroom facilities.) Itâs a little slice of serenityâ¦with bonus noise from JFK-bound planes that occasionally fly nearby!
Price: $50 per campsite for a three-night stay.
Getting there: Take the 2 or 5 train (at rush hour) to Flatbush Avenue and transfer to the Rockaway Parkâbound Q35 bus. Call 718-338-3799 for reservations.

What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base?

Tamera C

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

Answer
the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

How do I make a giant Igloo for my preschool class?

Meghan

I am a preschool teacher and we are doing themes for our summer camp and one of them is an artic theme. I want to make a giant igloo in the corner of the room that the kids can walk in and out of. Any suggestions on how I can do that? I would like to some how make it out of butcher paper. Any ideas would be great. Or any ideas I can add to help decorate the room for our artic theme would be awesome. Thanks.

Answer
If you don't have or don't want to collect that many milk jugs, how about a dome shaped tent? You can find them at fairly low prices and, if you don't plan to use it for real camping outdoors, you can get a cheap one. Draw block shapes on the butcher paper and then use it to cover the tent.

Please be sure children learn that people in the Arctic do NOT live in igloos. Read up on it and give them authentic information about life in the Arctic.

I didn't read the other answers all that closely, but here are some ideas:

Put up pictures of Arctic animals. Use them later to go on an Arctic animal "safari".

Freeze water in various shaped containers. You can put in food colouring to give them colour. Float them in your water table for "icebergs".

Have kids make "Ivory Snow" pictures and put them up around the room.

Teach kids to cut out snowflakes. Hand those up around the room.

I love having kids make decorations for the room rather than teachers doing it.

I wanted to find a ping pong table for camping but one that's not too pricey anyone know of a place where I can find one for a reasonable price? It will probably only be used when going camping which isn't very much in my family so that's why I don't want to be shelling out a whole bunch of money for something that won't be used very much.

Answer
Try the junk stores, and Yahoo recycle sites in your area.
