I just got married and my husband have a mounted deer head on the wall...never been clen before , it has a lot of dust and cigarrets smoke...any sugestions?

Answer
Took a bit of looking - thanks for the challenge!!

"Dusting - Mounted trophies, like furniture, will collect dust. Therefore, periodic dusting is necessary. Remove from the wall and place the trophy on a table or bench low enough to allow you to reach all parts. Trophies can be dusted with a vacuum attachment or they can be wiped off with a soft damp cloth, always moving in the direction of the grain of the hair. Never vacuum or wipe a trophy head going against the grain of the hair. The eyes and nostrils can be cleaned with a damp cloth also.

Cleaning - Some trophies become soiled to the point that they need additional cleaning rather than just dusting. When this occurs they can be washed with soap and water. When washing trophies, take a bucket of mild soap powder or chips, and wash with a soft damp sponge. Always remember to wash with the grain of the animal's hair. The following day, when the trophy is dry, the hair should be brushed with a soft brush or comb, once again in the same direction as the grain of the hair. Don't saturate the trophy or soak the head or skin in water. Sometimes portions of the hair may get messed up and seemingly impossible to brush or comb back down. This bit of hair can be laid back down with thick soap suds, or wave set, rubbed into the palms of the hands and then applied to the hair and rubbed down with the grain of the hair. After the hair is dry it can be combed or brushed. Goats, white sheep and polar bear often turn rather yellow. Fur Rugs can be cleaned in the same manner. The brushing of a fur rug is not as critical as brushing he hair of a mounted head having bristle hair
Insure Your Trophies - They are valuable!"

As for the smoke smell, I've heard that vinegar is the cure-all there, so maybe you can add it to the water if you are going to do the heavy cleaning. Or try Febreze. I hate the smell, but most people don't mind it. I'd recommend that if you *are* going to do the heavy cleaning, you do a vacuum first to get off as much dust as possible, then do the heavy clean.

What a lucky guy your husband is to have a great wife like you to do this for him. Tell him I said so!!

Is there any safe way to open aerosol cans?

themysticm

I found this really neat vintage aerosol can of suede polish-stuff in my garage, I don't want to throw it out and, if possible, I'd like to repurpose it, but is there any safe way of opening it any leave it mostly intact?
Mmkay, deal is, I don't actually want the stuff inside, I'm only really interested in the can and he top part with the nozzle. I just need to open it while keeping the can (and myself) intact. Like, separate the top part from the can part.

Answer
Lets see if I understand what you have. Is there no more pressure in the can? Or is the nozzle clogged up so you can't get anything out of it and can not tell about the pressure?
I'd say there is no safe way to open a can like that, they are not supposed to be opened. The insurance would not want to cover any damage or injury incurred from trying such a thing. None the less, I do it all the time. I like to get the marbles out of paint cans. Now then. You want to be able to preserve the can in tact as much as possible? Like, you want to dispense the liquid out of the can without putting it in another container with a tight cap? Remember there is a possibility that there is still some pressure in the can, the worst job I got on my face was spray adhesive! I had my nostrils and eyelids glued shut, not good. I used vegi oil on my face to cut the stickiness. Then soapy water. Well, you want to be careful, I use a can opener that is part of the collection of blades on my camp knife. They used to be called Camp King. That opener is the best for this kind of job. These cans are thicker metal than vegi cans so beware, you could break off the tip of your opener. Just make sure the pressure applied is even and straight down and with no sideways pressure. When you poke the tip of the opener into the edge of the can, you want to go in only a slight distance, like and eight of an inch and slowly bring the tip back out to relieve the potential pressure very slowly. You could even cover the hands with a rag to slow down any potential spray, but then you would have a hard time seeing what you are doing. The liquid would be staying near the bottom of the can and the gas would be at the top, thus the gas would come out first and maybe only. Be sure the can is vertical, or upright, with it's bottom held tightly against the table top or bench, porch rail or whatever. If you intend to pour the contents into another container you will want to open the hole a bit more, like a half inch and then turn the can 90 degrees and put the tip of the opener into the same slot and press down till it makes the slot open about one eight inch wide or so. then make a slit on the other side of the can, straight across from the first opening so as to let the air in as the contents comes out while you are tipping the can to pour.
Be sure you have plenty of ventilation and a partner to see that you are OK, to call for help if needed.

Just in case you don't have an opener like I use, you can use a small screw driver. Be sure that it has a tough enough handle to handle a blow from a hammer and be sure that the can is held tightly so it doesn't tip over while giving the blow. A nail could be used too, but be careful, the can tends to want to tip over when doing it that way. Be sure to remove the screw driver or nail slowly so as to relieve the potential pressure slowly.
Blessings on you and do be safe!

What to use as seat padding to turn a coffee table into a padded bench?

Corals mom

I want to put padding and cloth over a table. I was working on another piece and found its a decent size for a bench. It's 3ft by 18 in. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to use and where to go? A craft store is a big duh, but the only thing local is Michael's. I'd have to drive 5-25 miles to do any comparisons with other retailers or wholesalers.

Answer
I've done something similar to this with some egg crate foam from Walmart and some denim. I flipped one piece of egg crate foam upside-down on top of another one to make a thick pad with a flat top and stretched the denim over the top and stapled it to the underside of the wood.

How do I discipline my children in public?

Q. On a regular occasion, my wife and I like to get oout and do things. On a regular occasion, my children feel the urge to lash out and do something that really frustrates us, and they know is not allowed. How do we keep our cool, and discipline them in a public place where there might be people watching?
Kids are 2 (girl), and 5 (boy). Sometimes we think staying at home is the only answer.

Answer
discipline starts at home & the good behavior carries over into the public.

You need to be more firm at home so the kids know they will not get away with it home and won't get away with it outside the home.

How to discipline in public? Depends on how old your child is.

When our kids were toddlers we'd take them to the car for a time out. If we saw the start of a tantrum, our child wouldn't sit down & be still or they were screaming we'd take them out to the car. We'd buckle them in their carseat then sit in the car for 2mins. After that we'd look at our child and ask "Are you done? Can we got back now?" If the child nodded or responded with a screaming nod then we got out of the car, went to unbuckle them giving the warning "If you do this again or do not stop screaming we are going to have another times out." This almost always worked.

If they are older say 5+ then they can still do a car time out. But I think by age 5 a time out in public will work. It can be pretty shameful too. Once our child was not playing very safely at the park which was a danger to her & other kids. I don't remember what she was doing but I remember I was worried she or someone would get hurt. She did not listen to our warnings to stop or do something different. So we called her over to us, we sat her down on a picnic table bench a little ways away from us and made her wait it out. Her friend came over to ask us why she was sitting there and we calmly explained she was having a time out and could play again soon. I think just that in itself helped change the behavior. Plus any other times we mentioned a time out in public she behaved.

I had had friends give spankings to their kids in public. But honestly I never felt that was the right thing. First I feel a spanking is between the parent & a the child. Not the whole world. Plus some people feel it is child abuse and have been known to report it. A firm talk and warning about a spanking at home is good enough.

One friend years ago had to tell his daughter she would get a spanking when she got home. They were out to eat and she wasn't playing nicely. She didn't listen and he said she'd get a spanking when they got home. This was done quietly in a whisper. Later while she was playing she yelled loud enough for the whole place here "Daddy, do I still get a spanking or can I ask for mercy?" lol She meant forgiveness. The father replied "No" & The father said he turned so red in the face. But moment later an older woman walked by him, patted him on the shoulder and said she was glad to see at least one parent making the kids behave.

The next step after getting the kids to behave at home is let them know what is expected of them outside the home. Church is place to sit down and be quiet. A playground is a place to have fun, yell & run around but also they should be expected to treat others nicely and listen to you without a fight.

Next time you are out and the act up they need to be removed from that situation ASAP. Even if you are shopping sto and correct your child. We use to take our kids into the restroom at the grocery story. I'd firmly tell them that they were not behaving and when we got home they were in trouble. I told them I expected them to behave for now on & if the kept it up they would be in more trouble.

You have to follow through too. My mom & dad gave me empty threats. I knew they didn't mean it & I knew screaming would only get my own way.

It is nice to see someone wanting to correct their kids in public. My biggest pet peeve is parents who sit back and watch their kids destroy something, run around bothering others and the parents just sit back ignoring it.

I need step by step directions on how to make a bench cushion for my kitchen table.?

Q. I bought an Ikea kitchen bench and I would like to make a cushion for it. I have a vague idea how to do it - and the supplies I'll need, but I think I should have some step by step instructions just in case.

Is it as simple as plywood, spray adhesive, foam, and fabric??

Answer
You seem to be on the right track. You did not say if the top if the bench is finished. I am assuming that it is not.

You can adhere the foam to the plywood, but it is not necessary as the fabric will hold the foam into place.

1. Place fabric face down on a clean surface.
2. Place a layer of polyester batting down on the fabric.
3. Place foam cushion top of the batting.
4. Place the plywood over the foam.
5. Smooth the batting over the foam and plywood. Staple one side of the batting, Mitre the corners of the foam so that it is not bulky. (You may need to trim some of the batting. Staple the opposite side, then finish the remaining sides.
6. I like to sew the corners of the fabric for a finished edge, but you can carefully fold the corners of the fabric, (like a gift) and staple the fabric in the same manner as the batting.

You can then screw the bench to the bottom of the plywood.

YOU ARE DONE!

If the cushion in loose, the easiest way to do this is to sew the fabric on three sides and 1/3 of the way on each end of the remaining side. (Making a pillow case type cover.) Then turn the cover inside out. Take each corner and form a triangle from the flattened sides of the corners. Sew a seam on each corner the depth of the cushion. This gives a nice finished look. Turn inside - out. Then stuff cover with pillow and then hand sew the remaining portion of the seam.
