Answer
Cranes Beach
Website: http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visâ¦

290 Argilla Road
Ipswich, MA 01938-2647
(978) 356-4354

Description ~~
Enjoy the Northeastâs most spectacular beach and follow trails and boardwalks through a landscape of sand dunes and salt marsh.

What makes Crane Beach a special place?
At Crane Beach, youâll enjoy one of the finest beaches and outdoor recreation destinations on the East Coast. With its clean, inviting water, miles of shoreline, and mesmerizing views, Crane Beach has been a favorite with the ocean-loving public for generations. Whether you intend to take a refreshing plunge, play in the sand, or just soak up the sun, this unparalleled seaside experience is sure to provide lots of fun â and great memories, too.

Thereâs more to see here than sun and sand. Crane Beach is managed for both recreation and conservation â people and ecology â through careful planning. More than five miles of trails wind through coastal dunes here, which shield inland areas from storm waves and flooding. And, Castle Neck is the site of the North Shoreâs largest pitch pine forest.

Crane Beach is also among the worldâs most important nesting sites for piping plovers, a threatened bird that was nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century for its eggs and feathers. Crane Beach has been nationally recognized for its successful shorebird protection program. To protect these threatened shorebirds, we ask that you avoid the fenced nesting areas and the wrack, the line of washed-up organic debris where the birds feed and hide.

Trails
5.5 miles of trails traverse dunes and track the beachfront on both the Ipswich Bay and Essex River Estuary sides of the Castle Neck peninsula. Moderate hiking. These trails are part of the Bay Circuit Trail.

When to Visit
Year-round, daily, 8am to sunset. Allow a minimum of 2 hours, 6 hours if also visiting Castle Hill (including Great House or landscape tour) and the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Please note that dogs are welcome at Crane Beach from October 1 through March 30 through our Green Dogs program. Learn more >>

Facilities
In-season: Lifeguards and rangers, bike rack, bathhouses (with toilets and changing area), outside showers, picnic tables, Crane Beach Store (refreshments and merchandise: view the snack bar menu), drinking water fountains (located outside the bathhouses), information kiosk, transportation for mobility-impaired and challenged visitors. Off-season: portable toilets (located outside bathhouses).

Nearest sandy beach to London ?

Thinker

I live in West/central London and wondered whether anyone could tell me where the nearest sandy beach is. My son and I are getting a little fed up with the stones/pebbles at Brighton and Hove!

Answer
You need to head to the Essex coast.

There are sandy beaches (of the kind that are suitable for children to play in, build sandcastles, etc) at (starting with the nearest to London first): Leigh-on-Sea, Chalkwell (immediately adjacent to the railway station in this case), a couple in Southend itself ("Three Shells beach", just west of the pier probably your best bet there), and at Shoebury(ness).

To be honest, apart from East Beach at Shoebury, none of these beaches are very big - but they are sandy, of the right sort of sand, and seem to be popular with families with children. And (apart from Shoebury, which is a bit further out) - they are all under an hour's journey from central London (whether by train from Fenchurch Street or by road).

Not so convenient if you're travelling by train, but OK by car: another sandy beach in Essex, a bit nearer to London, and a bit bigger than most of those named above, is at Thorney Bay on Canvey Island....which is in many regards like being in an English seaside town of the 1950s, all decaying art-deco buildings, helter-skelters, candy-floss and rock

EDIT: For all of these, I'd highly recommend checking tide-tables first: sure, the beaches themselves will be there, much the same, whatever the tide (in general the sandy part is above the tideline). The thing is, when it's low tide, beyond the sand, there's a lot of mudflats...which actually I find very beautiful and melancholic, but I don't think many children would (kind of like the taste of beer vs the taste of orange juice: it's definitely an adult thing) - Much better to go when it's high tide, as the sea will be A LOT nearer, and the grey mudflats won't be visible. And there'll be alot more interesting things to see on the water at high tide - a lot of yachts/small boats actually in the water (rather than just resting on the mud) (Especially around Leigh/Chalkwell), probably a lot of windsurfers etc around Southend, too.

The tide tables linked to from here http://www.pla.co.uk/display_fixedpage.cfm/id/11 for Southend-on-Sea should refer to pretty much all of the beaches I've mentioned.

(They work like this: time is given in the 24 hour clock, with the height of the tide stated next to it. High tides and low tides are stated: so "0609 0.9" means a low tide of 0.9metres at 6.09 am "1218 5.6" high tide of 5.6m at 12.18pm)

Opinions Wanted: Looking for what NOT to miss in Bermuda. Favorite places/ beaches??

littlemira

We'll be cruising in July and want to experience some of the best Bermuda has to offer during our stop there - time is limited and we want opinions on the BEST beaches or water activities!! Or exciting things to do with a larger group of 10 people - kids & adults.

Answer
Horeshoe Bay is a wonderful beach, and probably one of the most famous in Bermuda. Photos are all over the place online. It's a fine beach. And to the west side there is a hill with tall coral which give great views of the beach.

My favorite is at Tobacco Bay, near St. George, because of its wonderful snorkeling. There is a small bar with outdoor tables to sit and sample the sun, as well as small beach.

Another favorite is in Smith's Parish on the South Shore try John Smith's Bay off of South Road. A lifeguard is on duty in season, and soft drinks, snacks, fast food are often available from a licensed purveyor in a van on the premises.

Friends bachelor party in Miami at Fontainebleau Miami Beach. What should we do/see?

Leroy

We don't really have an agenda but Staying Fri-Mon. Apparently the clubs like LIV are extremely hard to get into esp for the amount of dudes we have. Weâre okay to split a table(s) or bottle service so long as itâs not outrageous.

Answer
Bachelor party at Fontainebleau Miami Beach! Really wonderful! Youâre just entering a world filled with endless possibilities. Youâre free to play, dine, spa or just relax!

If your group prefers to stay at the hotel, you can have various recreational options, like relaxing pool, cabanas, marina or anything else. Remember to dine in one of the great restaurants. They are said to take the cityâs dining scene to new heights.

I can say that the Fontainebleau Miami Beach is the most popular destination for high-energy destination. Youâre okay to have table services, right? Private skyboxes in LIV are made for you: European bottle service, mini-bars and banquettesâ¦

Have no specific agenda? I suppose you can try some of the top things to do in Miami Beach.

Ocean Drive
Lincoln Road
The Everglades National Park
Haulover Beach Park

The list does go endless as Miami really has a variety of tourist attractions. Three days are enough to have a good vacation. To learn more about different attractions in Miami, you can click the following link.

Are you noticing signs of a slowing economy in your community?

Bea

We stopped in to have breakfast at a little place by the beach in Redondo Beach. Normally this place is jumping all morning long on a summer weekend and we feel lucky to get a table in 30 minutes. Today we were able to walk in and just sit down and there were empty tables nearby.

This might be a sign that the economy is slowing and people have less money to spend to go out to breakfast or that fewer people are spending money to drive to the beach on a Saturday morning.

Answer
I know it's vacation time and people around here, who yes still have more money than brains, are on vacation but there is a definite decrease in traffic at times when you'd think the roads would be crowded. Plus we were given a gift card for dinner and it was the strangest experience. My husband and I were the only ones in the place, plus they had a bar and it was happy hour and no one was there either. Great food, so I know it wasn't that. I have also started noticing what people are putting in their shopping carts at the grocery store. More store brands and less of the higher priced coffees, exotic fruits and veggies, more basic things and always those items on sale, plus people are using coupons more. I know from talking to my husband's family, he's from a family of eight, only one is taking a vacation away from home this summer and no one seems to be eating out.

Motorcycle Riders--What are some good tips for going cross-country on a bike?

Jayne

My boyfriend and I are thinking about riding his Harley from Mass to Daytona Beach. We have never rode across states let alone down the eastern border. Just looking to find some good tips out there that I might not have thought about.
To Bill- I said states as in multiple states. We have rode together plenty of times for a couple hours on end, highways, etc, up through New Hampshire and Maine. I just meant like through mulitple states across country. I also own my own bike, but it is an 883 sportster with a small gas tank, and think it would be much better to be on the back of my bf's and take everything in without paying attention to the rode. :-) Before I learned to ride, I rode on his bike for more than ten years, so we are entirely comfortable with each other...

Answer
Byron made a very good point about packing light and washing your clothes along the way. Something else, if you find you need something unexpected like extra shirts or something, don't overlook thrift stores. Wear a couple of $3 T shirts and when you're done, toss them in the trash.

If you can ride 500 miles a day alone, better figure 350 two up. 200 miles at a time is a long stretch on a bike, even with a comfortable dresser. Two up, it feels even longer. I suggest riding 120-150 miles, gas up, stretch, pee, get a drink and so on. You will be a lot better off making a lot of short rides with short rest stops rather than long tiring rides and long rest stops trying to rest up.

Take a camera, especially something like a better point and shoot with 10-15X zoom (compact size) or what's called a bridge camera, the point and shoots that look more like a large DSLR. Many of them has 24-40X zooms. Have a couple of memory cards, take plenty of photos of everything and delete those you don't want when you get home. Take shots over your bfs shoulder while riding, if things go wrong, take photos of those times as well. My motto is whatever doesn't kill you makes for a good story later, which is true. When at rest areas, if your camera has a self timer, perch it safely on a picnic table and get a shot of both of you. If there are other photographers there, ask them to take your photo. If they are carrying a camera, especially an expensive DSLR, you have nothing to worry about asking them to handle your camera. Shady looking, drugged out characters are not ones to hand your camera to.

In case you don't already have one, get the HD road atlas because it has the locations and numbers of HD shops, which may come in handy in case of a flat tire, etc. Put sticky things like shampoo bottles inside a zip lock bag should the bottle decide to pop open in the saddlebag or backpack. Stuff a plastic trash bag somewhere just in case it is needed during rain. One of the little, cheap LED mini flashlights is good to have on hand. If the weather turns cold and you don't have a warm enough jacket, buy a newspaper and place several layers between your chest and jacket. Amazingly effective.

And most important, ride safely, don't take chances, expect delays or something to happen and when it does, remain calm and keep in mind that regardless of what happens, you will get there and you will get back. Maybe a bit late, but so what. And keep in mind, whatever doesn't kill you makes for a good story later. I've been touring all over the US for over 35 years and the trips where the weather is perfect, nothing breaks down, no cops stop you, you don't get diarrhea from road side food and no aprts fall off are soon forgotten. The trips you remember forever and revel in recounting is where you must go to the motel front desk three times for more toilet paper, a huge lady cop mistakes you for a vandal and comes within a hairsbreath of stuffing you into the back seat of her cruiser and you get caught in a rainstorm so severe that when you put your foot down at a stop sign, water runs over the top of your cowboy boot. That's just a few of the more "memorable" times I remember. Good luck.
