What are some good fundraisers for raising money for camp?

Lynne Tayl

Our girl's youth group is raising money so that we can all go to girl's camp, or at least pay less than we usually have to.
What are some really cool creative ideas to raise as much money as possible?
We can't have an auction be our main source of money because our Bishop doesn't want all of the church members to have to basically pay for the camp every year, especially if they don't have a daughter even going to camp.
So, anything to appeal to the public?
We've tried garage sale,
But not everybody participated, and yeah.
So; Ideas?

Answer
Hi Lynne,

First off, here are a few sites you might want to check out for fundraising.

http://www.fundraising.com/
http://www.fundraisingweb.org/
http://www.youthpastor.com/Resource/index.cfm/Youth_Ministry_Fundraising.htm
http://www.churchbizonline.com/youth_fundraising.htm

Suggestions I would make are:

1. A Bake Sale - After (or before) church sell baked goods to the congregation. You can also sell some good coffee. If you don't want to bake see if the local donut shop will give you a deal on donuts to sell.

2. Chores - Offer to do chores for members of the church. Car washing, yard work, etc. could bring in some good money.

3. Dinner and a Show - Put together a show with all the girls doing 8-10 skits (kind of like Saturday Night Live) while parents and friends eat a dinner you all made. Spaghetti is easy to make a lot of.

4. Restaurants - Some restaurants like Round Table Pizza and Carl's Jr. have a fundraising program where you invite everyone you know to eat dinner there one night (basically having a big party) and your group gets a portion of the money.

5. Parent's Night Out - At your church or someone's home provide an evening where parents of the church can drop off their kids. While you and the other girls babysit the kids the parents can have a nice evening out.

6. Door to Door Car Wash - Find a safe neighborhood and go door to door asking residents if they would like a car wash. Make sure you have a hose, soap, rags, etc. Either have a parent drive the stuff around in their car or keep it all in a cart that you can pul from house to house.

7. If all else fails kidnap the Bishop and hold him for ransom. As long as it's all in good fun.

Good luck!

Where can i find a large outdoor patio table with solid, sturdy legs?

outdoor wood tables on Robust outdoor furniture - oak & larch picnic tables & benches
outdoor wood tables image

jc

All of the tables i've found are hollow metal and poorly made. They bend too easily and don't stay perpendicular to the ground. Need indoor dining table quality, but weather proof and big. Thinking marble or granite. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you are looking for solid sturdy outdoor table, maybe you can consider buying these 3 kinds of patio table, Iron patio table, teak patio table or wood patio table with stone leg.

First and second type of patio table you can find it on eBay, Amazon and other online store. The last one, you need to customize desktop and stone leg in different place.

If you do not have space to store your patio table, and you do not move your patio table often, you can consider buying a large waterproof outdoor patio furniture cover to cover your patio table when you not use it.

Outdoor patio furniture covers could keep your patio table from dust, rain, bird droppings and so on. It will decrease times of cleansing for you.

Is there something I can apply to an indoor wood table to make it usable outdoors?

professor

I really like the table and would like to use it for outdoor dining. I know I can't use it as it is because the rain will cause the would to separate. Any ideas?

Answer
They have a marine varnish for boats that you can get at an Ace Hardware. I just put it on my picnic table and it was really a nice shiny thick coating on it.That is really water proof because its for boats.

Are there any hard shell camping trailers that can be pulled by your average 6 cylinder sedan?

camping tables and benches on Outdoor Rooms - Still Hot for Summer 2008 SuzyRenovator
camping tables and benches image

Uncle Penn

Doesn't have to be big, but something that isn't one of those pop up tent trailers.

When I was a boy, my dad took us camping often using a small trailer that slept 4, had a sink, icebox, stove top and 4 person table and benches. The whole thing was probably no more than 14' long. He usually pulled it behind some sedan his company issued him at the time, and we seemed to have no problem pulling it.

Do they still make anything like that?

Answer
Yes, there are. They aren't going to be big, your average 6 cylinder sedan is only rated for 1-2 thousand pounds towing. It's not the engine that's the problem. It's the frame of the car. Your Grandpa's six cylinder Rambler only has 130 HP, but it had a full steel frame. Your modern sedan doesn't.

Visit your local RV dealership and talk to them.

What is the length of a traditional A frame picnic table?

Rusty B.

I need to buy a screen house for a camping trip and I'm wondering if anybody knows what the length of a standard park picnic table is (the A frame tables with attached benches that are as long as the table top is). Please help!

Answer
They are pretty much standard and are available in 6ft and 8ft lengths. They also measure 5.5 ft across, bench edge to bench edge. I have been to State Parks however that were a bit larger than 8ft. If you are going to a campsite, you can call ahead and they should be able to tell you the table sizes before you go. A 10'X10' screened in dining fly should cover any of the easily and still allow you room to get around in them. Happy Camping!

We are planning to do a camping trip next week to see the Perseid meteor shower. Any suggestions
which campground near Seattle (about 1 hour driving) would have a clear view of the sky?

Thanks!

If you really want to go see the stars why not drive out to the Table Mountain star party next weekend outside Ellensburg? Its more like a hour and 45 minutes but it's the coolest start gazing get together in the state. See the link below...

How tall should a kitchen chair be?

table bench height on Dining Room Tables and Chairs in Riverside, CA -
table bench height image

Sockfinder

I would love to use two benches (below) with cushions on them, but are they too short? I will be using a standard sized kitchen table. The benches are 16" in height.
( http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&navAction=jump&id=17093501&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS&color=000 )

Thanks!

Answer
Standard kitchen tables are 30 inches high. standard chairs are 18 - 19 inches. The skirt board that goes around the bottom of the table top varies with manufactures, and effects leg room. Average leg room needed is 8 inches. Measure this from top of chair seat to bottom of skirting. Don't forget cushion thickness, as you need the 8 inches to top of cushion, if you use cushions on top of chairs.

what material should be used for a work bench?

XX123

I'm building a work/hobby bench and am looking for some recommendations on what material I should consider that will provide a durable /low maintance top.

Answer
The top surface should be durable yet easy to use. If you sit down to work, the height should be the same as your kitchen table; about 30". If you stand up to work, I use 42" since I am tall, but if you are short (Height challenged) you may like something around 36" like your kitchen cabinet bases. I do jewelry avd stained glass. For jewelry, I sit and for stained glass, I stand. You might consider a combination bench with two heights.
I use white-painted homosote glued and screwed onto heavy plywood on a two by four frame for my bench tops. I paint my walls and ceilings white too. It increases your ability to see. If you need clarification, send me an e-mail.

What colors are best for my humble patio furniture?

concrete benches and tables on 350Concrete Benches and Table Sets in Lakeland, Florida For Sale
concrete benches and tables image
Q. I am moving into a home with a cute little side, covered patio. It is rectangular with several small trees on the side. Nothing special. Just some concrete and a wood cover. I currently own some nice deep green plastic chairs and a white bench with table. What colors would you recommend spray painting them? All the same color or separate? Dark wicker planters, stone planters, and a medium stone waterfall will be coming with me as well. Thank you!

Answer
Either match the green or beige, white shows dirt so much. If they are nice and pretty now then don't spray paint them until the need to have a nice little touch up to look new again. Does the wood cover need to be treated yet? If so, a nice red cedar finish with the other stuff painted to match would look good.

Should I sue for my sons injury he recieved at a fast food playground?

Mikey

My 4yr old fell and hit the side of his face on the concrete benches used for seats on the outside playground. This caused at least a half inch laceration starting at the corner of his mouth going back into his cheek. When I went into the restaurant for help there was no sense of urgency from the employees. I had to ask twice for a cup to put ice in and when I asked for the first aid kit I never received one but was told it would be a moment while the employees were casually talking with each other about other things. The customers jumped up to help though which was nice. We ended up just leaving and rushing him to the ER because we were not receiving any help there. The end result was the next day my 4yr old needed plastic surgery on his cheek and is now sick because he can't eat but still has to take pain medication on an empty stomach.

Answer
It depends on what he fell from. If he fell from playground equipment, you might have a case. If he fell from a table, you have no case at all. But you should complain to the fast food company about the attitude of their workers.

How to anchor a picnic table?

bench hook table on ... : Repurposed potting bench/ garden sideboard/ room divider/ trellis
bench hook table image

gmghaydon

For my eagle scout project, I'm going to be building picnic benches and picnic tables. However, I need to be able to anchor them so they won't get taken away in a storm, but they also need to be movable. So, They need to be safe enough to stay in one spot where they won't be moved unless on purpose. Any ideas?

Answer
There are tie down stakes made like cork-screws also. Light weight chain lengths can be screwed to the leg junction area and turnbuckles with hook ends can join the tie-down and chain and then be tightened down.

Can you share tips for converting a 6' x 12' enclosed trailer into an ice fishing shack?

rassy_80

Any information would be great, but specifically the inside of the trailer.

Answer
That would be a pretty large shanty to haul around, unless you left the wheels on. Doing that, however, might get it too high off the ice, and you'd need stabalizing jacks in the corners. And would still require a car to haul it.

As a straight shanty, you'd have to first remove the wheels and axels, and construct sled runners of some sort so it slides easily on the ice.

At a couple of places on the floor, cut out hatch openings. These should be hinged on one side, and be able to latch in the closed position (for when you're moving).

Other than that, do whatever you're comfortable with. I'd consider a propane heater for sure (tank mounted on the outside, heater inside). Being as you have the tank anyway, maybe a two-burner cookstove. Perhaps a window or two. Either permanent or moveable benches near the floor hatches. And at least one table, for eating, playing cards, etc.

I'd be sure an install hooks and clips for holding my tackle, and a trunk of some sort for the larger stuff like flags, sonar unit, and so on. Once the heater's been on awhile you will be stripping off clothes, so some hooks for them would be in order.

With or without windows, shanty's can get pretty dingy inside. So a couple of lanterns---gas, propane, or battery---will come in handy.

I would make a point of looking at other shanties, and adapt anything you see that you like to meet your needs.

What are good pranks to pull at camp?

camping table with hole on The Dining Hall where Paul Newman would often appear unannounced to ...
camping table with hole image

Luke S

ok so heres the deal...In two weeks, my school is going to a camp by some river. We stay in cabins with about 12 people in each and there are about 10 cabins for boys and 10 cabins for girls. Girls camp is about 2 miles down the river so we dont really want to go all the way over there. Heres my question, what are some good pranks we can pull to the other guys, my own group, and counselors that i wont get in trouble for.

Answer
Pin Holes in Cup
Use a tiny pin to make little pin holes in a plastic or styrofoam cup. Then offer the cup with a drink in it to your unaware victim. They will have dribbles of the liquid all over their shirt while drinking the beverage.

Clumsy Coffee Prank
Fill a coffee cup with some brown paint that looks like coffee. Tip it over onto wax paper until it dries up, then remove wax paper. You are now free to place this item anywhere. People will be fooled and think that someone tipped over a cup of coffee.

Wrapper And Cheese Sandwich
Next time you want to play a food prank on someone, make them a sandwich with cheese. But don't remove the plastic wrap from the cheese. When your victim takes a bite, they will get a plastic surprise!

Caramel Candy Onions
Make some tasty caramel candy apples for someone. But substitute the apples with onions.

Sour Times
Before going to bed at night, place a few drops of green food coloring in the milk. In the morning when your victim opens the carton to pour milk into breakfast cereal, he or she will think the milk is sour and no good.

Palms Down Beverage Trick
Impress your friend and show him how you can balance 2 cups of liquid on your hands (palms down). Then bet him that he cannot do it. When he tries to do it, offer to help him...once he gets it and balances the cups, walk out of the room and leave him to figure out how to remove cups from back of hands.

Cereal Box Switch
Remove the plastic bags from cereal boxes and switch them around. Your victim will scratch his head wondering why Cheerios came out of a box of Lucky Charms.

Yummy!
While eating at a restaurant or having dinner with friends pretend you see a fly. Take out a fly swatter and act like you are chasing it around. After awhile, take out a raisin when no one is paying attention. Then show them it quickly as if it is the fly...and eat it!

Take The Bait
Add a rubber fishing worm into your victim's meal and watch their surprise when they bite into the tasty morsel

Unable To Cut The Cake
Decorate a round car washing sponge with icing, whip cream and sprinkles so it looks like a cake. Leave it out so your victim can help himself to a slice. Then just sit back and enjoy watching him struggle while trying to cut the cake

Lottery Ticket Swap
This one takes some pre-planning. All you have to do is buy someone a lotto ticket today and tomorrow go out early and buy another ticket with the exact same numbers as the winning ticket from yesterday. When the victim of your prank isn't paying attention swap the newer ticket with the old one. When the person looks in the paper for the winning numbers, he or she won't even realize the date is wrong on the ticket and will believe it is the big winner.

Raining Confetti
Pick a rainy day and put some confetti inside your victims umbrella. When he or she goes to open it up...POOF! out comes the confetti.

Ping Pong Fallout
Put a bunch of ping pong balls or packing peanuts in an open box. Tilt it at an angle against the cupboard door (from the inside) so when the victim goes to open the cupboard the ping pong balls will all spill out.

Where did it go?
Remove the dining room table. Hide it somewhere. Then take the table cloth and whatever else was on top and put it back just the way it was, only this time its all on the floor.

Drenched With Water
This one takes a bit of practice. First, place a coin on your forhead and shake your head so the coin will fall into a funnel that is inserted in the beltline of your pants. Amaze your friends on how talented you are once you master this and when they ask to try it, quickly pour water down the funnel and into their pants.

So Heavy
Walk past a buddy with a large jug that is non transparent and act as if its filled with liquid, even though you only fill it with a couple ounces. Then ask him to carry it somewhere for you. He will be expecting a heavy load.

Blocked Sensor
Use a small piece of black tape to block the tv sensor so whoever decides to watch TV next cannot change the channel or adjust the volume.

Mail Box Prank
After the mail has already been delivered, fill the mail box with ping pong balls or packing nuts. Then ask someone else to go get the mail.

Poisonous Mushrooms
Buy some fresh mushrooms at the store. Paint them red. Then go and plant them in your friend or neighbors yard. They will think poisonous shrooms are going in their yard.

Embarasing Magazines
Send in subscriptions to embarasing magazines in the victim's name. Make sure to check "Bill Me".

Shoe Polish Phone Prank
Coat the reciever of someone's phone with shoe polish and then give them a call. Instant gratification. Make sure you match the colors of the polish and the phone. Small amounts of shaving cream work too.

Three Way Call
Utilizing threeway calling, call two people you don't know and star

How to decorate a door with pink theme?

Megan

I'm going to cheer camp, and we stay in dorms.. We have to decorate our doors and I don't know what to do, the theme is pink. I got pink tule, pink ribbon, and pink ribbon that says princess on it. I am getting a pink table cloth to put on the door, so that will be pink too. But, I just do not know what to do.ninalso, made 5 bows with pink polka dotted ribbon.. Please help, thank you in advance.

Answer
If you have tons and tons of pink tule, make sure to practice on a door at home and try using four very long, separate pieces of pink tulle to wrap horizontally around the door and making a giant bow in the middle. Evenly space out those gigantic bows and arrange the tulle so you are wrapping the door like it is a present with four bows. I'm sure you might need to buy those stick-on and removable wall hooks from wal mart or target and some extra ribbon to tie the bows on and keep them where they belong.
Buy some pink construction paper and print out or find butterfly and heart shapes, even cut out the words "cheer Camp" from the pink paper and arrange it around the tulle bows. You'll be able to tuck it in hopefully to the folds in the tulle. The extra tulle and a little tape will hold your butterflies and other cut out things. You can use the ribbon you bought and a hole punch to make the words like cheer and the hearts you've made to hang it.

Need help with Wedding Ideas!!!!?

I am planning my Wedding with a budget of $6000-8000. We want it outdoors, planning on Sedona, AZ since we live here in AZ. We are pretty outdoorsy so are our families, we are planning on having the whole wedding reception turn into a camping trip (since we have 4 children, 2 are mine from a previous marriage and 2 are his from a previous marriage). We need help with everything!!! I love to cook, bake and decorate. Our colors are baby blue and burnt orange with about 60 quests. Any suggestions?

Answer
I love to look and look//to try to answer what you asked//, the only thing that I cannot get together is your colors, not dresses and flowers, but other stuff, you could have of course candles on the tables, but I also liked the all natural fruit centerpieces made out of fruit and greenery, but also there were burlap wrapped different sized jars and mason jars with beautiful orange/peach dahlias and then some with sunflowers, mustard colored mum buttons, daisies. golden statice and orange gerber daisies and loose drapey (perhaps you can get your own) greenery. My one suggestion would be to change the burnt orange to a medium orange, add in a bit of the burnt and like rust mums.
Just list some things: Since you are a camper, you will know about food, time/how much/storage/refrigeration if needed.
Beer and soft drinks in big tin tubs or the barrels that are cut in half to be flower planters at Lowes or Home Depot.
Round slabs of wood to put centerpieces on, will list a good site later, but you can probably get your own. Also the cutest cupcake tower, the towers were logs or pieces of wood different heights with pine cones and artificial woodsy flowers in between, gorgeous.
Corn hole game, croquet, flourscent ring toss if night time, ping pong games.
Tents, tables, chairs (?) fire pit, a must, a pretty landscape=flat or a hiking trail-some type of home made archway made out of small logs and twig branches with burlap twine and burlap bows, aisle lined with wildflowers, stanchions for reserved seats holding mason jars with flowers mentioned above, log benches or hay bales,
a place for parking, lighting?, twinkle lights
Crepe paper and japanese lanterns in your colors.Burlap and regular ribbon, Baskets/antique boxes to hold bottles of water, etc. signs made of wood or rustic chalkboards/slates (on site I will list) hanging silk flowers and/or round dots on mono filament line, cameras for guests to take candid shots, pine cone wreaths, metal type lanterns for light and to hang in trees, rustic wooden signs.***************
Found this Foil Cones (fix on grill) Fruit and Smores Cones
chopped fruit (strawberries and bananas-can use any), mini marshmallows, chocolate chips (dark chocolate has anti-oxidants), waffle style ice cream cones--must be waffle, mix as desired and add to waffle cones, cover with heavy foil, place on grill, turning twice for 5-7 minutes, a gooey good snack, may have to take a trial run first (*can add butterscotch morsels, white chocolate, nuts, brown sugar, toffee pieces, coconut, dried fruit) **but I like the more simple one
Favor bags--brown paper bags with top folded over in a small fold, staple, add craft eyeballs and a small bow tied below (mustache) the a round circle decorated with polka dots and the message you want----Tree best to you--oranetreed you came-
http://www.save-on-crafts ****this site has lots of good "stuff" and many ideas
So many beautiful state parks and camp grounds, you'll have to google/search or you may already have one in mind, I liked the "Slide rock St. Park" always wanted to do that

then saw this sign on some material like bleached linen with burlap back
I (heart shape) Spy
People dancing and twirling
Some fancy food
a bubbly drink
something blue
two people hand in hand
a white dress
a shirt with stripes of color gray
a couple of old souls
a sparkly diamond
a little sugar
a dress the color of the sun
a giant hug and kiss
Good luck, best wishes!!jl

Which would be easiest to do first? Who gets what bed?

Jamie's Mo

I'm planning on renovating my camper/RV once its paid off (by Oct). I want to replace *most* of the flooring as its filthy carpet, part of the bathroom floor has to be ripped up and replaced ASAP, I want to take the built in table (turns into a bed) out and put in a small breakfast nook table and chairs, and replace the couch.

The floor, flooring, and couch HAVE to be done. Couch is "broken" in that bars come through part and hurt your butt if you sit on it..... Like you can feel the supports though the cushions. The flooring is just gross. I hate carpet. And the plumbing is messed up so the bathroom floor has been being wet over and over, we're trying to fix it but it happened before we bought it....

What would be easiest to do first?

We also have a full bed in a "seperate" bedroom, and a twin bed by the bathroom/couch/table. Would you leave your son (21 months) in the big bed and take the twin, or make him go to the twin? I've been staying up late doing homework, but I *could* move it to the bedroom lol. He's just never slept alone or in the twin bed.

Who would sleep where?
Sorry, the floor will be done as soon as the issue is fixed, we just can't figure it out yet. I thought I had fixed it earlier but guess not....

I love the storage bench idea! I was leaning towards a futon lol!

Answer
I would fix the bathroom first. The damage will only get worse and more costly to fix it if it is not repaired. I would not wait nearly a year to do so, either. Mold and mildew can cause health issues.

I would take out the built in table and the couch and then rip up the carpet. Make any repairs, and then cover with the "puzzle" style wood flooring that is nice, durable and not too expensive.

For an RV, depending on room i would put in a breakfast nook I have seen at Montgomery Ward and KMart- it is a booth style bench (with storage under the seats) and a picnic style table, with a picnic bench (which you could use or not). It is only $200. It is not large or heavy, so it would be great in an RV. As well, I would probably replace the couch with a futon if possible- they are usually inexpensive (I have seen them for as little as $100), lightweight and versatile (couch or bed).

If he has never slept on the twin, I would not put him on it at his age. He would likely be used to the bigger bed and roll off of the smaller one, both because it is smaller and because the bigger one is probably surrounding on most sides by walls that prevent his falling. Besides, the noise from your being up will not disturb him if he is in another room.

We have been looking at popup campers (probably a fixer upper, because I am not willing to pay what they cost new) to buy one day so we can take the children camping more often (and still have some conveniences such as electricity, fridge, toilet, heat/air) so when I see somethign that will work, I make note of it for future reference.

Where's a good place to get reasonably priced outdoor camping gear?

camping gear tables on Gelert Backpacker Table Aluminium Camping Equipment - review, compare ...
camping gear tables image

jjrobison

I recently was at REI and noticed how expensive everything was. Just wondering where I can get cheap camping gear (stoves, tents, rain jackets, hiking boots etc.) Thanks.

Answer
I order from Campmor a lot for specialty gear. There are a lot of things that you don't need specialty gear though, so that is a way to save some money and keep from becoming a slave to the gear.

You don't need camping cookware or table service for example. You can get a melamine plate from Target or dollar store to eat on, or use a pie pan. You can use a grease keeper to cook in...etc. You also don't need specialty clothing for camping or travelling. Often just your grubbies will do nicely, or any type of high performing wick wear to keep you comfortable, especially good wicking underwear but not necessarily underwear from a camping place. Right?

The thing about REI and it is notable...is that it is a membership store. The membership entitles you to special invitation to scratch and dent sales, and other exclusive deals at their place. PLUS everything you buy there has an unconditional exchange policy. You don't like it? Take it back. Doesn't matter why. With that in mind, you can feel confident about your purchases and experiment with different items until you have the right set up for your needs.

How Do I Do This Problem For Math?

Mahera

So heres the question -> A camping-supply rents camping gear for $25 per person. Make a table of the total rental charges for 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50 campers. Okay so what does this mean? How am I suppose to make the table?

Answer
You are creating a multiplication table specifically for the purpose of making it easier to calculate how much the rental fees would be.
If it were truly needed, I would have created the table with 1,2,3,4,5,10,15,20,25,30. . .
Then for any number up to 55 I just need to add two numbers i.e. for 32 campers I would add the number in the 30 row and the 2 row.

Row or column would seem to be your choice:

0 - 0
5 - 125

.

Good luck

I'm not asking how deep can a human possibly dig. I'm asking if there is a max legal depth.

Only a couple of feet. Once you reach the water table the sand will just start collapsing.

What bags to use for candy buffet at wedding?

bzone

I have decided to do a candy buffet table at my wedding for the favors. I would like to put a container or bag at each chair with a note inviting them to visit the candy buffet. What is the best choice for a container or bag? I want something that they can close so their candy won't spill all over the place once they get back to their seat. And I'd like something that will match my light blue color theme. And something that will hold about 4 oz of candy. Any suggestions?

Answer
Check out these ideas for favor boxes or bags:

*Miniature paper boxes tied with colorful ribbon work well for truffles, fudge, and cake.

*Clear cellophane bags fastened with foil seals show off delicious cookies.

*Tins with stickers displaying your names and wedding date can hold mints or small chocolate candies.

*Mason jars are perfect for homemade jam.

*Coffee mugs customized with your monogram complement packets of gourmet coffee or hot cocoa.

*Sheer organdy bags are versatile and can hold a variety of favors, such as candy or cookie cutters.

*Metal pails highlight a seaside wedding when paired with flip-flops and a beach towel.

*Chinese take-out boxes filled with fortune cookies can be used to reflect an Asian-inspired theme.

How to get a puppy to love grooming?

Presto!

I have a male puppy who absolutely hates grooming, and will try to run away, jump off the bench and will never stay still. The problem is he's a toy poodle, and they need daily grooming. No matter when I do it, (when he's sleepy, just eaten, before his dinner, after a walk) he won't stop wriggling!
How do I get him to love grooming time and stay still?

Answer
Groomers use a noose just for that reason. They don't want the dog to jump or fall off the table or jump out of a bath tub.

Put the bench up close to something you can tie your dog to so he can't run away or jump off the bench. He is going to fight you but you have to look at it like you got a job to do & you are not going to let any of his antics stop you from doing that job.

Take your time & do not hurt him. Use a "Slicker" brush to brush him with & use a wide toothed come to comb through so you know you got all the mats. Do not ever bathe the dog before you have removed ALL mats or the will just be harder to get out after the dog has dried. Hair, fur, coat will act like leather & shrink when it dries & only tighten the mat.

I am preparing a feast for my english class in representation of the Ancient Roman times. What kinds of food or decorations woud make the project standout? HELP PLEASE!

Answer
Lots of fun possibilities - - - the simplest thing for food is as old as woman/man kind - - - breads - - - veggies - - - fruit - - - roasted meats - - - cheeses // // Preferably served on Silver plates that look Roman, a simple basic design, round plates with fluted edges. Communal plates and if your guests need plates, well, discretely provide them with simple circular wooden plates.

You can find these wonderful crude glass plates that look truly ancient but still would stick with silver or gold/ Actuality being clever, Gold for Purple Grapes, Silver for Roasted Lamb, etc. Cloth napkins simple white cotton.

Toss out all modern furniture. Depending on budget, if budget is a bit low, go to Hardware or Monster Mart and get several sturdy BACKLESS benches... ... Benches get covered with thick white blanket beneath white sheet stretched tight. Large fluffy pillows here and there. If you can, three or four simple X wooden chairs or warrior stools or a mix. Short 'Doric collomns three to four feet high can serve as tables but three or four circular marble tables would be great. Statuary would be impressive. A simple Marble fountain spouting white or sparkling juice or both would be a nice touch.

Enough - - - - here is a few copied bits...

"""Wealthy Romans bought food from the open air markets. Every week farmers and fishermen went to the towns to sell fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat. The Romans ate their first meal at dawn. This meal was small and usually consisted of bread, salad, olives, cheese, fruit, nuts, and cold meat left over from dinner the night before. At noon the Romans ate a small quick meal. After lunch everyone took a 2 to 3 hour nap. Even children were excused from school for this time. The evening meal was served at sunset and usually consisted of a large meal with the entire family. A typical meal consisted of soup with legumes, milk, cheese, fresh and dried fruit, and lard. Later meat and bread was added to this meal.

In the wealthy homes slaves spent a large part of the day preparing food for their masters. Dinner parties were given by the men of wealthy families. The women and children dined separately. The meal was served in the dining room which was the finest room in the house. This room could have marble, mosaic, frescoes, fountains, fish tanks, tables with silver and flower inlays. Everyone reclined on couches that were arranged in a U shape around a low table. Musicians entertained the guests during the meal. These parties started with salads, eggs, and shellfish. Then guests were given wine which had been sweetened with honey.

The meal could be up to seven dishes. Slaves served the guests and wiped the fingers of the guests between courses. Cheese made from goat and sheep milk could be served. The main course might include boiled and roasted meat. Favorite meats included mutton (sheep meat), goat meat, pork, ham and bacon, chicken, goose and duck, and fish, especially tuna. The meat was sliced by the slaves, so it could be eaten with the fingers. Foods were seasoned with herbs like dill, thyme, basil, and mint. The final course may consist of fruit, dates, and cakes sweetened with honey. Yogurt could be mixed with the fruit. Walnuts, chestnuts, and acorns were also mixed with the foods.

(Wanna 'shock' surprise your guests? Find an energetic actor/actress type or hire a pro, and have them make themselves into White Marble statues. The trick is to get them to be perfectly still for about a half hour, takes discipline, at a key moment, when raising glasses in prayer/benediction, the statue (s) come to life)

http://library.thinkquest.org/CR0210200/ancient_rome/roman_meal.htm
Poor families may eat a meal of foods they could grow. They grew beans, vegetables, and fruits. Common fruits were apples, pears, and figs. Common vegetables included onions, cucumbers, carrots, garlic, and cabbage. Poor Romans often ate a dinner of porridge made from vegetables. When the family could afford it fish, bread, olives. and wine were added to the meal. Bread was often dipped into olive oil. Meat was seldom eaten. """

What is the safest, easiest camp stove or burner?

cheap camping kitchen tables on Discount Furniture Outlet Stores, Clearance Furniture Sale, Cheap ...
cheap camping kitchen tables image

Rochelle

After Sandy, I'm getting more serious about emergency equipment. What is your favorite, (and safest) camp stove or burner? And, where do I get it?
Thanks for any help.

Answer
I have a couple of one-burner ones that run on cans of butane, cans about the size of the average aerosol can. They're not particularly compact, but they are easy to operate, cheap to buy, big enough to sit an average saucepan or frypan on, and easy to store the fuel for. I don't remember the make, but they seem to be sold almost everywhere camping stuff is sold, and so are the cans of fuel. A can of the fuel seems to last for about 4 hours of average cooking. They come in a black plastic carrying case. Mine haven't had a lot of use but I've had one of them for at least 10 years and it's still working fine. This kind: http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Butane-Stove-Camping-Burner/dp/B000RA8V1S

You'll want to be sure you have some kind of non-combustible surface to use it on, though I have used mine on picnic tables with no problem. A baking sheet turned upside down would work well, if you plan to use it on a countertop or on a kitchen table, or use one over your stove burners to give a level surface for the camp stove.

My next choice would be a two-burner Coleman stove.

How do I babysit a 6 year old?

Addison

I have to babysit my boyfriend's little sister tomorrow while his parents are at a funeral, and he's at camp. I have never really babysat one on one before, and I rarely am around kids. How do I babysit a 6 year old girl? Her name is Ashley, and normally she is really hyper. Can someone please give me some tips? Best answer gets 10 points... thank you!

Answer
6 year olds are a great age to babysit. They're old enough to communicate with, and young enough to be simple to entertain.
If you want to be "super fun" you can set her up to paint at your kitchen table with finger paints or brushes and poster paint. Put down newspaper, provide 2 or 3 colors of paint on paper plates, stick her in one of your old shirts and let her go nuts on the paper. Kids totally LOVE painting but it's such a big production that their parents don't usually set it up at home, although it's no big deal for a one time thing if you're sitting.

Playdoh and cookie cutters are also really popular and cheap, or you can bake cookies together.

Since you say she's usually hyper anything that keeps her and her hands busy is a good bet. If you try a DvD I could see her getting bored and wandering around looking for other things to keep her busy and getting into trouble.

You can also take her to the park- swings and slides never miss, and if she runs around and plays till she's tired she's more likely to be content with coloring or watching tv till the end of you time together.

Where are the cool beaches in California?

table beach laguna image

J*LO

I am going to San Francisco in 2 weeks and after which I would like to chill out at the beach somewhere in Cali. Where would be nice? Santa Barbara? Laguna? Monterey etc etc. Appreciate any suggestions...

Answer
The best beaches are in the San Diego Area. Laguna is for posers & perverts (my opinion), Santa Barbara has too many uptight people with children & issues, Monterey is on the cold side, although it does have a great Aquarium called The Monterey Bay Aquarium. Northern California Beaches tend to be colder than the Southern California Beaches. You could have a nice drive to a half-way point like Pismo Beach. Check your tide tables & try to avoid extreme high tides & lookout for jellyfish & sting-rays that come out at certain beaches.

Is there a really NICE place in Los Angeles to get coffee?

Elince Moc

I don't mean like the resterant.. I don't care if its a Starbucks... I just want a NICE (pretty) place
Somewhere not so, um, congested with people
Somewhere with tables and chairs outside
Preferably a big outdoor area
Maybe some nice vegetation
Just NICE
Not dirty like all of Los Angeles

Answer
Go to the Riodan's Tavern right next to the Pantry on Figueroa and James Woods in Downtown LA. Very nice, no not outdoor but you don't want outdoor in this weather anyway.

IF you have to have outdoor and don't mind driving to Laguna Beach (Orange County) then Las Brisas is PERFECT. Right on the beach, all your can eat breakfast buffet, gourmet coffee, and a place to walk on the beach after. Only 10-15 bucks a person for breakfast too.

My kids need 24/7 assistance!?

camping table top fridge image

Proud Momm

I am a mom of a five year old daughter and 3 year old quad's and they can be a hassle. I have now realized I can't even go to the bathroom without hearing a bang, boom, or crash! For example today while all my 5 kids were calmly watching TV I figured i could go outside and make a quick phone call. I came back to find they had gotten inside the fridge and was playing with the flour, throwing it at eachother, playing with it, and throwing it in the air and pretended it was snowing. I was gone for 5 minutes tops. Also I needed to go to the bathroom, about 50 seconds. I came back and my daughter had jumped off the kitchen table and cut her arm on a chair, needing 7 stitches. This stuff happens every day, and being a single mom I don't make enough money for a nanny and most teens I hire for babysitters can not handle my kids, and quit. They go to preschool during the year but now that its summer they go to a 3 hour camp fallowing a 2 hour nap, so once it's 1 o'clock its mommy dudy untill 8 o'clock the next morning. What should i do? I need to work to make money but they are so wild I cannot do that.
It isnt that east to be a single, working mother for 5 young children, very close in age. I try to punish them but it doesn't seem to work.
My husband died last year from cancer, and we have very few relatives. And i only planned to have 2 kids, wasnt expecting quad's. (but wouldnt trade them for the world!)

Answer
If the father(s) are paying child support, you should have enough to hire a professional adult babysitter. Where are their fathers anyway? And if the father's of the children are not paying child support, then you have to get a lawyer and drag them into court for a declaration of paternity and court-ordered child support (make sure the combined support covers their medical care, day care costs, and leaves a little extra to cover rent, food, etc.)

As for the kitchen (do it in the bathroom too), put a lock on the fridge and the cupboards (not to deprive them of food but to protect them from getting into danger and hurting themselves). Also, put a baby gate in the doorway of the room you wish to temporarily confine them in, and make it a spanking offense for them to open the baby gate.

Also, you need to institute a strict sleep/nap program. At that age, children need a good 12 plus hours of sleep per day. They should be put to bed at 9 pm at night and not permitted to get out of bed before 7 am (if awake, they can quietly look at picture books in their cribs/bed). And they should have an hour nap every morning from 11 am until noon, and a two hour nap in the afternoon (from 3-5 pm). Don't forget to put motion-detecting alarm on the children's bedroom door and window so you can be warned if they leave their room.

This regular nap program should give you enough time to take care of your personal needs (bathing, telephone time, chores, etc.). And at the same time, you need to teach them to start to behave and "play quietly" when you need to leave them for a few minutes.

Good luck!

Can I lose 50 kg (106 pounds) in 1 year?

Miss McKay

I'm a 14 year old girl, and I weigh 98 kilos (216 pounds). This is the highest my weight has ever been and I sick and tired of being the fat girl in the corner of class that people smile at, but don't talk to. Honestly, I'm a really great person who's got a great personality and sense of humor. But, because I'm fat people automatically reject me as a friend before they even talk to me. I hate the way our society is today, but honestly I'm starting to believe that phrase "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em".... So, I've decided to get a weight loss plan and join the skinny girls, their bikinis, their short shorts, and constant attention from guys. It sounds great, but it's gonna be hard work.
I have a HORRIBLE history with losing weight, diet, and excercise, so I've really given myself a realistic time period to lose 50 kg: I hope and pray by August 2012 I will have lost 50 kg!
Another thing I have to worry about is stretch marks. I have stretch marks on my arms, my back, my legs, and especially my stomach. I can't remember the last time I wore a tank top, or swimsuit without a cover. Also, because of my weight I have excess oil on my face which equals excess acne. Sometimes, especially in P.E., I'm embarrassed to wear shorts because my calves are so huge. My weight has affected my whole life ever since the third grade, from being called fat and crying in the bathroom at school to refusing to eat in public and at school, so people won't think I'm any fatter than I already am. It has affected my self-confidence and my self-esteem ever since elementary schools. When I was younger, I would envy all the pretty girls in my school and say things to them like " I'll never be as pretty/smart/rich as you", or how I constantly rejected the idea of "making friends" because I automatically assumed people would hate me or diss me right in my face if I talked to them. I never wanted to go to summer camp unless one of my friends came with me, because I truly believed no one would like me and I would spend those two weeks by myself. Truthfully, one of my biggest fears is eating alone at lunch. And that's exactly what I did on my first day of eighth grade. I was at a new school and because I was too scared to talk to people, make friends, or sit at a table with other people I ate alone. I sat at the emptiest table and after I finished I just sat there for like 15 minutes just looking around. People were staring and laughing from the table across-- It was one of the most embarrassing days of my life.
My mom doesn't help either. She's overweight/obese too, yet she's always buying fast food, pizza, chinese, wings, and because I eat it she calls me a "greedy pig". My response is "If that's the only thing we have in our fridge, what else am I supposed to eat?". Her response "Starve and lose a couple pounds!" NO JOKE.
My neighborhood is not the best neighborhood for going outside and taking a 30-minute jog. So how can I get the cardio in my daily excercise routines?
I've proposed multiple diet plans and ask to help go grocery shopping, but she will not listen to me when I say not to buy those three bags of chips and two 12-packs of Sunkist soda. Then she buys the most irresistible things and expects me not to eat them because I told her not to buy them, so when I do she once again calls me a "greedy pig". As a child, I don't have a car to drive to the gym and get a membership or go grocery shopping for myself. If my mother can't help me, who will?
Every time I see a model or an asian girl I get sooooo envious and just wish I could take a knife and cut off the fat from my legs and arms.
I'm going into high school this year and by sophomore year I wanna look like all the rest of the girls. Have the chance to get a boyfriend and make lots of new friends.

So, I was thinking of combining a liquid with many toning excercises. For 10 days every month, I would do a full liquid diet: meaning any liquids from ice creams to juices to teas to smoothies, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During those 10 days I would only do yoga for 20 minutes everyday because during liquid diets your not supposed to do strenuous excercise. During the other 21/20/19 days of the months I would eat healthy meals and do 30 minutes of cardio everyday. And also I'll have tea every other day to further detoxify my system.

Does this sound like a good/effective plan to do for 12 months?
What are some foods I should not eat at all during these twelve weeks to lose the most weight?
What are some great toning excercises for flabby arms and chunky thighs?
Any great motivation tricks or tips?
Is 50 kg in one year reasonable?
Any other great advice is greatly appreciated!!

Answer
No offense but your plan sounds horrible. Diets don't work. Thats how people fail at losing weights.
You need to learn about nutrition. Learn why people in the US are overweight. Its not fat its carbs and sugar. Yes you need to lay off the fast food but you dont need a stupid liquid diet. All that will do is make you miserable and then you will binge eat.

If you do what I tell you I guarantee you will start to lose weight. Try this for 6 weeks and if you don't see positive results then you can try your way but I am telling you its bad.

You need to start eating healthy and its not really that expensive to do it. Sandwiches on 100% WHOLE WHEAT bread are your friends. Tuna (in sunflower oil like starkist tuna u can get at walmart) and natural peanut butter are really great. They have the healthy fats you need. (your body needs healthy fats to lose weight). Turkey/ham/roast beef and cheese with a bit of mustard. Each you can keep between 200-300 calories

Eggs for breakfast are good. Another good source of protein. Add some fruit with it and your good to go.

There are lots of healthy foods you can eat just be smart about it. Meats/veggies/fruits. Stay away from carbs when you can especially bad stuff. Most of the junk food in the US is sugar and carbs and that activates insulin in your body and causes you to store fat.

This is how you calculate how many calories you need a day to maintain your weight. Then subtract 10-20% for a calorie deficit and then add exercise to lose more.
WOMEN: BMR = [9.99 x weight (kg)] + [6.25 x height (cm)] - [4.92 x age (years)] -161

You then multiply these by an 'activity variable' to give TEE. This Activity Factor[/u] is the cost of living and it is BASED ON MORE THAN JUST YOUR TRAINING. It also includes work/lifestyle, sport & a TEF of ~15% (an average mixed diet). Average activity variables are:
1.2 =Sedentary(Little or no exercise + desk job)
1.3-1.4 = Lightly Active (Little daily activity & light exercise 1-3 days a week)
1.5-1.6 = Moderately Active(Moderately active daily life & Moderate exercise 3-5 days a week)
1.7-1.8 = Very Active (Physically demanding lifestyle & Hard exercise or sports 6-7 days a week)
1.9-2.0 = Extremely Active(Hard daily exercise or sports and physical job)

WORKOUT
You need to do resistance training (aka weight lifting) If you ever watch the biggest loser you always see trainers making them do weights even if they are women. If you think models dont lift weights you are wrong. It helps build muscle which burns more calories. It keeps your body from using muscle as fuel instead of fat. Its all around great. 1 full body routine 3 times a week. It should take about an hour

Cardio. Do cardio everyday. On weightlifting days do it AFTER your workout. Right after. Why? Because when working out your body will use up the sugar in your body for energy first. This is a ready source of energy. When thats gone it will work on fat. If you lift weights first you can get the most out of your weight routine because you are fresh, but then you burn your sugars. That way you are burning fat as soon as your start your cardio.

If you have access to a treadmill that has an incline setting that works awesome. I do that in the morning on my cardio days and then every evening I go for an hour walk before it gets dark.

You can lose 2 pounds a week at a healthy rate. At your weight you could probably lose a little bit more early on and be ok. at 2 pounds a week and 52 weeks a year thats 104 pounds. You can do it.

What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base?

camping tables prices image

Tamera C

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

Answer
the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

How do I make a giant Igloo for my preschool class?

Meghan

I am a preschool teacher and we are doing themes for our summer camp and one of them is an artic theme. I want to make a giant igloo in the corner of the room that the kids can walk in and out of. Any suggestions on how I can do that? I would like to some how make it out of butcher paper. Any ideas would be great. Or any ideas I can add to help decorate the room for our artic theme would be awesome. Thanks.

Answer
If you don't have or don't want to collect that many milk jugs, how about a dome shaped tent? You can find them at fairly low prices and, if you don't plan to use it for real camping outdoors, you can get a cheap one. Draw block shapes on the butcher paper and then use it to cover the tent.

Please be sure children learn that people in the Arctic do NOT live in igloos. Read up on it and give them authentic information about life in the Arctic.

I didn't read the other answers all that closely, but here are some ideas:

Put up pictures of Arctic animals. Use them later to go on an Arctic animal "safari".

Freeze water in various shaped containers. You can put in food colouring to give them colour. Float them in your water table for "icebergs".

Have kids make "Ivory Snow" pictures and put them up around the room.

Teach kids to cut out snowflakes. Hand those up around the room.

I love having kids make decorations for the room rather than teachers doing it.

I live in a town house and everything is alright, but the only private space we have outside is a shared gap where the air conditioners are! My neighbor and I have already discussed everything. If I can make it look OK, she won't complain. The grass isn't finished growing, and we are growing tomatoes, and apparently weeds. I want it to be relaxing, and cheap.

Answer
2 chairs the kind that fold up..so you can take them in if u like....a small cooler to act like a table or foot rest ..a bag of ice and a six pack.......one of them fancy ash tray standsthat stick in the ground....a few decent sized rocks piled to gether somwhere....and a fake funny lookin frog...no wind chimes! just keep in mind that a lawn mower may be having to cut the grass....

Does any one know a place to keep cheap outdoor furniture?

Jess

Nothing special, just cheap. Me and my boyfriend just got a house with a patio, and we want a table and chairs for out there. The cheapest thing I found at Wal-Mart was like 150 and the table was tiny. I can't even find just a plastic table and chairs. We live in Western PA, I'm hoping theres a secret used store or something someone might know about:) lol

Answer
why not invest in something that will last you longer than a year, you can check end of season sales in september and garage sales for now, even if you find some resin chairs or plastic ones you can always paint them to match whatever decor you want to have on your patio.
The first patio we had i bought the blow up furniture to get us through the first summer (i got it really cheap) and the next year we bought nice stuff, sadly i sold it when i moved and am now in the same predicament as yourself.
