Where can i find an adjustable coffee table?

I have one now but my roommate is moving out and taking it. Is there an official name for one of these? I cant seem to find a cheap one at ikea.

At first glance it looks like a normal wood coffee table. But you can lift up the top and it becomes more of a kitchen table. Super convenient because I live in a small apartment and dont have a dining room.

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi, It is called a lift top coffee table and you can get one here http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=lift%20top%20table&tag=recommended0b-20&index=garden&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325 Hope this helps.

How do I make a mini-camp for my niece?

ChicaInqui

I'm babysitting my niece for a week and I want to do like a camp for her. What are some fun things I could do with her each day? What are some good crafts I could do with her?
Thanks sooo much!
Also she just moved into our house with her mom (we live in FL).
She is 8 years old

Answer
Go to Michaels. They have craft kits, as well as paint-it-yourself pre-made boxes. She can make and decorate her own little heart shaped (or whatever shape you choose!) box.

You can also get Sand Art and Bead Art kits at Walmart, Target, K-Mart, ETC, if you don't have a local target.

Be sure, if you decide to paint, that she isn't wearing good clothes, or that you cover her clothes! Mom might not be happy if she ruins a good pair of clothes. You might ask your sister if she has any clothes she could wear for painting.

You can also buy cheap t-shirts and some tye-dye, but be sure to read the instructions. I once turned the inside of my dryer purple-whoops! Michaels sells tye-dye in various colors, and you can get plain t's almost anywhere.

Since it's summer, if it's warm where you are, turn on the sprinkler, or find some kind of water activity. Do you have a local swimming pool? Usually, it's rather inexpensive to go to a public pool. If you have something like a Slip N Slide, those are fun, too.

Coloring sheets are good, too. Google "free coloring pages" and you'll find some coloring sheets you can print off your computer for you and her to color. Be sure to have plenty of markers and crayons!

Movies are always good. Go downtown to Blockbuster, or a local video rental store. Find a movie suitable. You know your neice-you know what she likes.

There's also games. Most people have board games in their home. Sit down at the kitchen table, and play Monopoly. Don't forget to collect $200 when you pass Go! ;)

I accidentally brought back a hermit crab from the beach; how do I keep it alive until I take it back tomorrow?

Connie's M

I'm planning to either take it back to the beach or over to my mother-in-law's to put in her saltwater fish tank but I need to know how to keep it alive until morning.

Answer
Is it a land hermit crab or sea one?
If it's a land crab, it will drown if put into a fish tank. Put it in a container with newspaper and just provide it with two containers of water (in a jar lid or something)... one should be decholrinated freshwater (if you own fish use the drops you use for them, otherwise boil water and let it cool down) and the other put a small pinch of non-iodised salt in (like cooking salt, not table salt, important!).

Keep it warm... heat mat or a way to keep the container humid is ideal. If not, at least keep it in a warm room. Although since it's a native species this probably won't be such an issue.

Since it's just until morning, that will be fine. You may want to provide food if you want, such as veges (like carrot) or even rolled oats and such...

If it's not a land crab and needs water to breathe, it will need saltwater. To be honest I have no idea if putting it in your mother-in-law's tank will be ok or not. Will depend on the fish in there, but hermit crabs are generally ok with a lot of community fish... but it also risks putting a disease in the tank, especially if it's a wild one.
Maybe she can put some of her aquarium water in an icecream container or something for you instead and put the crab in there.

Good luck!

Wedding ideas? (rock and roll theme)?

Duck Frog

So I just got engaged to my bf of 2.5 years. We both are into rock music and we are going to have a live band play at our wedding. We want a rock and roll wedding with the colors being red, black, and white. I'm gonna be in black, the groom in white, and bridesmaids in red. Any ideas for venues (like outdoor, beach, just general venue ideas) and ideas on wedding invites and table settings? Thanks so much! Oh and we want our wedding in late summer/early fall :)

Answer
i would go with an indoor venue for a theme like this because you will want to decorate with old rock n roll posters or vinyl records or record cover. it would be fun to find a venue with that black and white floor if you are going for vintage rock and roll, or have it in a theater or venue where they normally hold concerts if you want a more modern rock vibe.

I have a couch that I sit in quite a bit. One side has an end table, but the other side is pretty close to the walking path through the room, so I don't have anything permanent. Usually I just move a chair over to set stuff (like a drink) on. Are there like really thin end tables that might work here? What do you recommend?

Answer
Unless you find one that is skinny enough for your space, you could always find one that is wide but with a narrow top and turn it so that the back faces your couch. Do you know what I mean?
Maybe a small bench would work too. That would also give you added storage!

What type of wood for outdoor furniture?

outdoor picnic tables on Outdoor Home Center - Outdoor Furniture - Picnic and Patio Tables
outdoor picnic tables image

Mightie Mo

I want to build a simple outdoor picnic table and use pine (mostly 2x4) for construction because it is inexpensive. I plan to set it on my backyard lawn, so it will be exposed to moisture and sunlight. Question is, if I stain & protect it, will it last just as long as other higher quality woods like redwood and cedar? Thanks.

Answer
The pine, properly stained, sealed, and protected, should last a good long while. Especially important is to guard the footings of the table and/or benches; wherever it comes in contact with the ground, lingering moisture will tend to invade the wood. Likewise, give the table a very slight slant and enough gaps to drain quickly and easily, to avoid any standing water.
However, with equal treatments on various types of wood, pine is still not the equal of redwood or cedar. Cedar, for example, possesses a natural chemical resistance to insects and rot that makes it last considerably longer.
Given how expensive the higher-quality woods are, it might be worthwhile to make a pine table and replace it after a few years, once it starts to decay.

some real color but don't want the furniture to look tacky. I like things to look natural since I live on a river and the landscape is all indigenous to the area. One bench over-looks the river, two others are in a patio area. I also have a picnic table that could use to be re-painted, it's currently a dense red. If I paint, do I need to prime first? Any color suggestions?

Answer
There is a perfect paint for your project and it Olympic paint stain. It comes in a ton of colors, shades and stain pigments. You don't need to prime, but should sand any areas that are gray, peeling or loose. I love this stuff and have found it long lasting, durable, weather resistant and fade resistant. It is great out in the sun and everything I've used it on gets hit by the automatic sprinklers almost daily and it doesn't get discolored like other paints or stains I have used. I got it at Lowes.

Romantic spots in the houston/katy texas area?

Josh

I am a junior in highschool and looking to plan a big suprise for a one year dating anaversery with my girlfriend. I would love to set up a showing were I can have her favorite movie play, but I have no idea where to get a screen. Also I have her favorite food ready but I would love to have a table and everything set up in some beautiful scenic location, but im not sure where. I am new to the area so I would love assistance. Ideas?

Answer
OK~ I have got the point! Your girl friend will be very happy if she knows everything you have done for her. I am very happy to recommend you some gorgeous romantic places for you to celebrate your dating anniversary ~~Hope you can have a memorable and romantic day!!!

1. Burke Baker Planetarium: One Hermann Circle Dr., 77001.
This planetarium is only 1 of 3 worldwide with a full-view SkyScan Digital Sky projector--making events here shine in big, Texas-style living color. Once the lights go down and the music goes up, the dark amphitheatre transforms into a kissing oasis! What is more, few people will come there and you can set a table there in advance.

2. The Williams Tower: 2800 Post Oak, Ste. 6262, 77056
The Williams Waterfall in front of the building is haloed in an almost-constant rainbow of mist and sunshine, complete with benches and a wishing fountain. Is that cool? If you see a film there, that will be terrific~~

3. The Galveston Seawall, 77553
A beautiful place to watch the waves crash against the jetties or to sit upon with a picnic lunch, the seawall serves as both protector from, and portrait of, the Gulf of Mexico.

4. Vargo's Gardens: 2401 Fondren, 77001
Peacocks, swans and squirrels call this place home, and add to the enchanting ambiance of this place--a natural choice for outdoor events of all kinds.

OH~ forget to remind you: All the things you will do are outdoor, so you had better pay more attention to the weather on that day. You can check out the weather forecast on the web below.

When you go to the above places, please be careful and take care of yourself.

What all I need for a small inexpensive wedding and reception?

camping table set on Furniture - Aluminum Folding Table with 4 Chairs was sold for R320.00 ...
camping table set image

Jacquie

My fiance is going into the Army and he will be going to boot camp this summer. His recruiter suggested that because we have a daughter due in two weeks and because of possible housing after boot camp that we get married before he goes to boot camp. We are a little tight on money, so I wondered what we need for a small, inexpensive, but nice wedding?

Answer
It depends on what kind of wedding you want. If you are thinking traditional, you will need the following.
1) A license.
Typically $20-$50 depending on where you live. Ask your local courthouse staff for info.
2) An officiant and location to be married.
If you or a family member are a member of a church, typically they will donate both an officiant and the church building, but you are expected to give some type of donation after the wedding. Other groups may also donate the space, but typically not an officiant, which will run about $300 if you have to pay for one.
3) A location for the reception.
Check if the church has a separate room that you can use or a detached space that you could use for free. Alternatively, some open-concept churches can have tables set up in the hall, you get married while people are sitting at their tables. Or, you could have the reception in someone's back yard. Keep in mind that a back-yard event will require tables and chairs that would typically be provided by an indoor location, but that an outside location is also typically much easier to decorate nicely.
4) Dress clothes.
You will need a dress. A traditional dress will run you $100 on ebay, or you may be able to find one at Goodwill or a similar store. Remember that alterations cost extra unless you know someone who would donate the time. Shoes and veil are up to you. He could wear his military formals if he has them (free) or a nice suit. If you want people to stand up with you, ask them to wear something from their closet that would coordinate; think black dresses for women and khakis with black button-up for men. If you want something more formal, go for tuxes, but keep in mind that it will run an extra $150 for a tux.
5) Flowers.
If you get married closer into spring-summer, you can cut bouquets from your flower beds or from a relative/close neighbor. Hydrangeas are particularly beautiful and bountiful during their season. Alternatively, you can make your own real flower bouquet from your local florist/flower seller (ex Walmart) for $25-$40. Some people will suggest fake flowers, but they are actually more expensive in the long run unless you are super-crafty and make your own paper flowers.
6) Cake and other food/drink
Hunt out your family members, friends, etc for anyone they may know who likes to make cakes. A cake from the bakery will run $800+; a friend of a friend will typically do a cake for $250-$300, and if the person is closer, they may be willing to do it as your wedding gift.
As for the rest of the food/drink, keep in mind that, as long as some type of beverage is available, how far you go with food/drink is completely voluntary, and you don't have to do anything at all. On the cheap, you can do chips and dips, barbeque, mini sandwiches or have a potluck meal. The nice part of the wedding isn't based on what food you eat, but how you present it. i.e. chips in nice glass bowls (easy to borrow) instead of straight out of the bag. Keep in mind that you will also need plastic plates, cups, and silverware; think clear or something that matches your theme.
7) Decorations.
Having a dark location will make decorating much easier, as you can lean heavily on lighting (such as white Christmas lights strung into trees and candles on tables). Some ribbons and some potted plants (if you cover the pots in silver wrapping paper and ribbon, you can use really cheap plants). Mirrors that reflect light. Also, be sure to ask around to see what places in your area will loan out for weddings. In my town, the local hardware store will let you borrow things like candle cups and square mirrored tiles (great to romantically reflect candle light) for free.
Alternatively, try to pick a theme that is easy to decorate with cute accessories on the cheap, such as a southern vintage with mason jars/pails or oriental with origami figures strewn about.
Either way, browse websites like theknot.com for ideas that you can modify for your purposes; just don't get too obsessed with the monstrous weddings you will see there.
8) Invitations.
You can get as fancy or simple with these as you like. I've seen really cute flat invitations with the invitation wording printed out on white paper, then the white paper glued onto a colored paper that frames it. Get creative with your computer fonts as well as clip-art with scrolls, etc. Keep in mind that you will need to get envelopes if you are going to mail them (lots of people make cute invitations that don't fit in any envelope known to man). There are also places that you can make free wedding websites, like www.momentville.com, which you can either use for free RSVPs (no postage to pay) or actually do electronic invitations. Remember that the point is to let people know what is going on, but the process really isn't that important.

Hope this helps and congrats on both the new baby and the wedding!

How do I create a good art show set-up?

gal friday

I'm new to the juried art show world, and I've got one coming up in December. I need a 10x10 booth, which I have to make myself, which also needs to be covered... Finding a camping cover-up that size shouldn't be difficult, but what's a good idea for the walls to hang my paintings upon? It needs to be effective as well as look pleasant.

Answer
Not sure if your art is themed or not, so if you'd need a different background for various paintings, but if you do, try this as a lightweight, easy to assemble/take down & carry to different shows:

1. Use PVC tubing & union joints to build 3 frame walls
that are as tall as you need

2. Find a solid color fabric you like & drape it over each
wall. (You can vary the color/texture/etc. if you want.)
This will give you privacy & define your space. If you
need some extra space to hang small, lightweight
sketches, use double-sided tape to adhere the fabric
draped over the back of your frame, then a small tab
on the back of each sketch to adhere it to the front
for display.

3. Get some room dividers that match each theme of
your paintings. If the divider is fabric covered, use
curtain hooks to hang your pictures; if its wood, use
screw in hooks; if its plastic/vinyl, use 3M hangers;
etc. (Rember to bring a small tackle box you can
keep under your chair with extra hangers, scissors,
tape, etc.)

4. You could lean larger, framed paintings against the
legs of the table you set-up in a corner of your 10 x
10 booth + set-up a couple easels in other corners.

Not knowing exactly the size/weight/medium of your paintings its difficult to give you just one idea. I hope at least one of these helps you think of a way to display your art.

What do you learn in army vs marine boot camp?

second hand camping tables image

Lynn I

whitch do you learn more stuff/skills in? Like compass or map reading or navigating or any type of survival? or first aid.Whitch has a better hand to hand combat?and whitch ones better trained

Answer
I can tell you some of what I think is different. Maybe someone in the Army will give some input to confirm or deny.

Marines teach water survival, I don't think the Army teaches it to all soldiers. Special Forces would receive this type training and more.

Marines have a known distance marksmanship course which ranges from 200 to 500 yards for marksmanship. You also must pass a Table 2 test which is short distances including multiple targets and moving targets. I think the second part is similar to the basic Army marksmanship.

A couple of years ago, the Army quit teaching hand-to-hand. They still teach 10 hours of Modern Combative Arts. Since this course was developed by a former Marine it is similar to the Marine Corps' old LINE martial arts. The Marine Corps now teaches an aggressive program called MCMAP. All Marines are also required to achieve level one MCMAP during their first year at their permanent duty station. Infantry Marines have a higher requirement. The Marines teach a separate hand-to-hand course with bayonets.

Land Nav and map reading is not taught in Marine Corps boot camp, it is taught in School of Infantry which you attend after graduating from boot camp. I don't know if the Army teaches this in BCT, I would think they teach it in OSUT.

If I say which one I believe has the best training it will just start some crap.

The real training starts after you graduate from boot camp.

Camping in NJ Pine Barrens for the first time?

Christine

My mom and I are going camping in Bass River State Forest in the New Jersey Pine Barrens for the first time. It's a public campground with showers, flush toilets, and a fire ring and we'll be sleeping in a tent. We're only staying for one night, but since i've never done this before I was wondering what to bring and if there are any other important tips to keep in mind.

Answer
This time of year it is plenty hot enough not to require extra layers. Expect to sweat and try to wear synthetics that wick up moisture and dry quickly to stay cool. A change of underwear, a clean shirt and a fresh pair of socks and sock liners and a swimsuit should be all you need for spare clothes. Long sleeves/pants will help keep bugs off, but bring a pair of shorts to sleep in. Wear good hiking shoes or boots and don't forget thick socks with sock liners to help keep your feet cool and comfortable.

A basic sleeping bag and mat will be fine; you'll probably wind up sleeping on top of the bag in shorts and a t-shirt. A battery fan will be appreciated. Keep a clean campsite and do your cooking/eating away from your tent. Store all your food in your vehicle. Even with all this, raccoons will likely visit your campsite but will usually stay to the shadows away from people and the camp fire -- unless you have dropped scraps on the ground or haven't packed away your food. I have never seen or heard of bears being a problem in the pine barrens.

You will need a container to carry water from provided spigots to your site. The blue plastic ones sold at WalMart are fine. Check to see if your area has picnic tables, you might need to bring your own folding table and chairs. If you use the campground's picnic table, you'll want a plastic tablecloth or two (one for the table top, the other cut in half lengthwise for over the benches) and clips to keep them in place. Bring several kitchen-sized trash bags as you are required to pack out all your own trash. Bring your own stove and/or grill, or grate to put over the campfire, plus whatever cooking/eating containers and utensils you'll need. A lantern, flashlights and a small first aid kit are useful.

Get your supplies before setting-out from home or on your way, as supermarkets are quite far from the campgrounds. Use empty soda bottles filled 3/4 with water and frozen instead of bags of ice in your cooler: they last longer and don't leave your cooler full of water when they melt. Two coolers -- 1 for food and 1 for beverages -- are better than one. Remember: keep the food in your car to avoid animals. Note: alcoholic beverages are not permitted in state parks.

Bring your own dry/seasoned firewood. Chop kindling in advance or bring a hatchet. Cotton balls saturated in petroleum jelly make excellent tinder. Have a shovel and large bucket of water near the fire in case of accidents, and keep your tent far enough away that sparks and flying embers won't melt holes in the fabric. Camper courtesy is to clean-out the fire ring and leave a few sticks of firewood for the next camper (as well as completely cleaning-up all trash from your site before leaving).

Bring flip-flops or water shoes for the bathrooms, and obviously your own soap, shampoo and towel. Also, pull the cardboard tube out of 1/2 a roll of toilet paper, squash the paper flat and stick in a zip-lock bag. Carry the TP, a small hand trowel (shovel) and a second large zip-lock bag with you while hiking just in case the need suddenly strikes on the trail, or the bathrooms run out of TP.

Although you are not permitted to "swim" in any rivers or streams unless a lifeguard is present, you can legally wade in them to cool off. The water is stained a dark tea color due to tree sap and pig iron in the soil, but is actually quite clean (though should still be filtered, treated or boiled before drinking, except when drawn from a tap marked as drinking or potable water).

Biting flies, mosquitoes and other bugs will be in full force. Ticks are present year 'round. A cocktail of Avon's Skin So Soft and DEET will help keep them at bay. Wear a hat or a buff that's been treated with Permethrin to help keep bugs away from your face and sweat out of your eyes. And don't forget sun block and sunglasses. Leave make-up, hair products, etc at home -- the heat and humidity will cause these to run all over your face, making you look like Frankenstein, and the scent will attract bugs and animals.

When you stop at the ranger station to check-in, ask for any pamphlets, guides, maps to the area to plan your day's activities. Also get their phone numbers for emergency calls.

What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base?

Tamera C

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

Answer
the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

What are the major accessories I will need for camping besides a tent and Air Mattress?

xylem

I am a first time camper, yea I know it is sad but I have just purchased my coleman tent and air mattress and I was just wondering what other esential camping accessories I will need? Also, any camping tips would be most helpful! Thanks

Answer
My hubby and I just started tent camping with friends two years ago, and it took us a while to figure out everything we needed (btw, good start getting an air mattress!). Oh, and don't forget to waterproof your tent BEFORE the trip with waterproofing spray sold at sporting goods stores!

Here's my abbreviated packing list. You have some items already (obviously), but I've highlighted items you might still need to purchase:

SHELTER:

-Tent
-Tarp to Go Under Tent (should be the same size as tent base, not much bigger or you'll have to fold it under. This keeps the tent bottom dry, and you don't want rain collecting on the tarp and rolling under!)
-Air mattress
-Air mattress pump
-Sleeping Bags / Pillows
-Extra Blankets (1 per person in case of chilly weather)
-Beach Towel (for when you track mud all over your tent)

-First Aid items (bandaids, benadryl, calamine lotion, antiseptic cream, aspirin, immodium AD, etc.)
-Hand Soap
-Towels (in case you get soaked in rain)
-Hand Sanitizer

FUN / OTHER:

-Deck of Cards / Travel Boardgame
-Camera / Extra Batteries
-Flashlights / Extra Batteries
-Fishing Pole / Tackle Box
-Lots of Cash to buy firewood near campsite - it's expensive!
-Wallet, ID, Cell Phone

Phew! It seems like a lot, but skip here and there and you'll be wishing you had these items when you're at the campsite. It's worth filling up the car with Rubbermaid Bins filled with this stuff. Oh - don't forget Rubbermaid Bins to put all this stuff in! You'll need to keep your possession and food waterproof if it rains!

Have fun!

What are great activities to do on Kauai?

BobKnight

We will be heading to Kauai on our honeymoon for a week next month and I'd love to hear about great activities on the Island.

Answer
Aloha,
I live on Kauai! :) This is a list I've compiled over the past couple of years. The pages I quote are from Kauai Revealed, 5th edition.

Activities

1. Kayaking - either Wailua River or Nawiliwili Bay. Lots of companies to take you out.

2. Take an innertube ride down an old sugar cane irrigation ditch - Kauai Backcountry Adventures, Hanamaulu (p. 180). They also have a zipline tour which is a lot of fun!

3. Take a boat tour to see dolphins, whales, and other wildlife. Deli lunch is served on board -- I like longer tours better because you will get to snorkel and possibly see the Na Pali coast if you arenât going during the winter. Great views of Niâihau (the âForbidden Islandâ) and probably the closest to the island most of us will get!

4. Beaches - All of Kauaiâs beaches are beautiful and everyone has his or her favorite. Poipu, Tunnels, Hanalei, Lydgate, and Kealia are great. Polihale is an incredible beach on the far west side of the island. 15 miles long and rather difficult to get to, but you can take a car most of the way in. There is no shade here and the sand gets ridiculously hot, so be prepared! Best to take a beach umbrella with you if you plan to spend the day (takes a while to get to from just about anywhere on the island) so you wonât get fried. Youâre really close to Niâihau from this point and the views are fantastic. This is as far up the west side of Kauai you can go without a boat. It feels like youâre on a deserted island -- very beautiful.

5. Waimea Canyon - Mark Twain nicknamed it the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Very beautiful canyon on the west side of the island. You can drive right up into it and take various short hikes to scenic view points.

6. Spouting Horn, Tree Tunnel, drive up waterfalls - All on the east and south shores of the island. Easy to get to and quite pretty. (The waterfalls are named Opaekaâa and Wailua.)

Restaurants, etc.
1. Hamuraâs Saimin, Lihue (p. 214) - Counter-style seating, very local! Excellent saimin (kind of like Top Ramen but much better) with little goodies inside like Spam chunks, fish cake, etc. BIG bowls, very inexpensive.

2. Java Kai in Kapaa and Hanalei - Really good locally grown coffee. They make the frou frou drinks too, which I love. Try the blended mocha anu -- it has coconut syrup in it! Mmm...

3. Lappertâs Ice Cream - Hanalei, Coconut Marketplace, Koloa - The BEST locally made ice cream, ever! Beats Tropical Dreams from the Big Island hands down. Lots of fun flavors; my favorites are Kauai Pie and Banana Fudge. Totally decadent and not cheap, but worth every penny! If you like it and think youâll get more, be sure to get a punch card so you can get a free treat at the end of your trip!

4. Olympic Cafe, Kapaa - eclectic mix of salads, sandwiches, pasta...etc. Upstairs off of the main highway so you can watch the street traffic go by on one side or have a view of the ocean from the other! Open air and very comfortable.

5. Caffe Coco, Kapaa - Cute little outdoor restaurant with counter style ordering. They provide cans of Off to help you battle the mosquitoes and it's well worth it. Good food, inexpensive, great atmosphere outside among plants and flowers.

6. Kauai Pasta, Kapaa and Lihue (p. 213) - Really good pasta dishes! Very small catering co. with some tables inside. Friendly service and delicious food. Everything Iâve tried is wonderful but I especially like their pesto sauce on spaghetti.

7. Tropical Taco, Hanalei - taco place that used to be inside an old VW van! It has moved into a building and the food is great. A little more than you usually spend for tacos, but quite good. Be sure to stop at Kai Kane (local surf shop) in the same complex while you're there. They have great stuff to take home as souvenirs!

8. Tip Top, Lihue - Local type place with a mixture of Japanese, Filipino, and Hawaiian food. Their loco moco is fantastic! (Rice, hamburger patty, gravy, and an egg on top! Filling, delicious, and full of carbs!)

9. Dukeâs, Kalapaki Beach - Duke's is part of a chain that has restaurants on Maui and Oahu as well as in California. Very good food -- ono salad bar! -- and relaxed, slightly upscale atmosphere.

10. Tropical Burgers, Poipu - Trust me, this is NOT the same as the one at Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa! I have been to both and the one in Poipu is far superior. Seating is in a plantation style building, all open air. I have only eaten breakfast there, which is fabulous. I highly recommend the crunchy french toast with a side of Portuguese sausage. Make sure to get the coconut syrup and mix it with a little maple...MMM!

11. Kountry Kitchen, Kapaa - Very popular with locals and tourists. Only open until 2 pm (or thereabouts). Great breakfasts, cozy atmosphere with chicken designs everywhere.

12. Keoki's Paradise, Poipu (p. 219) - fun place! They have live music at times and it is almost always crowded, so make a reservation. Neat atmosphere. I got one of the best steaks I've EVER eaten at Keoki's!

13. Roy's, Poipu (p. 222) - Fantastic Pan-Asian food. Roy's is a chain throughout the islands as well as on the mainland and we have loved every one we've been to! It's a bit pricey but totally worth it. This is the only Roy's on the island, so if you're going to Poipu and you want to eat GOOD food, Roy's is the best choice.

14. Dukeâs, Kalapaki Beach - Duke's is part of a chain that has restaurants on Maui and Oahu as well as in California. Very good food -- ono salad bar! -- and relaxed, slightly upscale atmosphere.

15. What primer, paint, and seal should I use on an outdoor table?

I recently built myself an outdoor ping pong table. It is not plywood but plybead. This is similar to a composite wood or particle board. The surface is already perfectly smooth. I want to paint and seal the table so it won't warp in various weather conditions. Does anyone know how I can go about doing this without ruining this type of wood?

Answer
Go with an Oil base primer preferably one of Benjamin Moores or Sherwin Williams better grade primer/paints. When you prime be sure to get the edges and any groves or crevasses the ply bead may have. Do two good coats of primer on it. The first coat thin it down slightly with paint thinner. Let dry for 12 to 24 hours. This will raise the grain slightly so sand it down with a sanding block after it dries. The second coat should be a regular coat without thinning. Sand again. You can then put a good quality 100% acrylic paint over it or an oil base paint will do just fine. But get a good quality primer and paint because you don't want your hard work and skill to be in vain.

What model kettler ping pong table do I have?

andy

I have a outdoor blue top aluminum ping pong table but not sure what model it is! The words are in German underneath the table and the only numbers are 7162-600. But I can't find any exact model online! It either has to be the nordkap or the stockholme! But I'm not sure so please help me determine this... The reason why I don't know is because I bought it off of craigs list off a lady that was trying to get money from her boyfriend stuff! Thanks

One of my Key Club members mentioned us going out and doing a one day, you know, a few hours on a Saturday, service project/ volunteer work at a local lake. It has like a playground and camping and picnic tables, that kind of thing. The ranger and I have been missing each other's calls, but he wants to know what we want to do. What kind of volunteer work could/should we do??

Answer
clean up the litter near the lake, help do the routine yard work kinda stuff- raking the leaves and seasonal things, set up an activity thing for little kids and babysit them at the playground and ask for the ranger to host question and answers etc.

How do I plan a successful camping trip without overstressing so I can enjoy it too?

angel_rae_

I'm supposed to be planning a camping 3day 2night camping trip for about 10-15 people. We want to keep it cheap and this is my first time planning my husband's squadron camp-out and it's still two weeks away and I just can't keep things organized and I'm having a hard time getting people to cooperate. Any suggestions?

Answer
My wife and I used to do this...a LOT!

We cooked breakfast every morning. Lunches were on your own. Dinners were we cooked the meat and the other campers provided the side dishes.

Everyone paid $15 toward the meals we provided. That didn't cover the actual cost, but it came pretty close because I used a lot of things from home that I already had. Salt and pepper shakers, cooking oil, margarine, etc.

Pancakes are cheap. Scrambled eggs with bits of ham and cheese is easy. Potatoes are cheap. I had an electric table top griddle that I used for breakfast. We camped where they had hook-ups.

Everyone is responsible to provide their own sleeping equipment and ice chests, etc.

You either want to get what is called a "group site", or several camping "spaces" together. Ask the park ranger how many vehicles are allowed per space. The more people you can get in a space, the cheaper the space.

Find out if there is someone in the squadron that has access to free firewood.

Distribute lists of what each person is responsible for. They need to bring 2 lunches for themselves and provide a side dish for 2 dinners for the group. Their $15, will provide 3 breakfasts and 2 dinners. They need to bring their own plates. utensils, and drinks.

Have set meal times for breakfast and dinner. Since they are on their own for lunch, you will have all day to enjoy yourself.

You can plan some games, or get someone else who would like to do that. Water-filled balloon toss. Hairy man contest. Whatever you think would work with the group you have.

Sitting around the fire in the evening is a great time to share "The Most Embarrassing Moment" story, or who can tell the biggest lie.

You can do any variations on this you want. Depending on budget, where the money comes from, what if anything you are able to get donated. You may find a store that is willing to donate if "Squadron" indicates your husband and other campers are in the military.

You can find junk in your garage, such as an old fuel pump or something and write "Hairy Man Trophy" on it with a magic marker. Much more fun than the real thing.

You are limited by your imagination much more than you are by lack of helpful participants. You will be finding people willing to help out when you actually get there.

Planning a very large backyard picnic, I need tables but don't want to buy or rent, any creative ideas?

I have 1 picnic table, 2 bistro's, 2 8x10 folding tables and a card table. I have plenty of chairs. There may be about 60 people, so far I have seating for 30. I have asked people to bring lawn chairs and blankets because I am planning an outdoor movie night. The problem with rentals is the pick-up and return. Hope you can help!

Answer
I was featured in the Chicago Sun Times in 1999 for my creative Thanksgiving ideas including using a door as a table!

All you need is your card table and a flat panel door (lightweight is best). Take the door offf the hinges and remove all of the hardware. Set the door directly on the card table, centered. Cover it with your table cloth of choice. Just make sure people on the ends know that they can't lean on it to get up.

An 8 foot door should seat 9 or 10 people. If you have friends who can donate 2 more card tables and you have 2 more doors, you can get the rest of your guests seated!

Have fun!

Answer
Go to a "resale" shop and get some used flat doors for a couple of dollars each. With saw horses, these make really good "tables." Modern saw-horses fold for pretty compact storage. You can re-donate the doors if you have no other use for them. They also store pretty easily.

Plywood works, but be sure to get a thick enough grade that the sheet will be stiff supported only on the ends, or invest in a saw-horse to put in the middle, too.

Look around your home for options, too. What can you take outside for use? Take the drawers out of desks and chests of drawers, and cover with butcher paper or sheets for "table cloths." People can sit on an otoman. No law says you can't take actual furniture outside if the weather is good-- you might want to put "bags" on the legs of furniture to keep damp from the lawn out. These options require you have someone to help move furniture, though...that may be difficult to arrange if you are on your own..

Another option - your church might be able to lend you tables for a small donation, and they might even be able to help you with the pick-up and return.

going camping for the first time alone with my bf and this is our first time going with out our parents or family.

Answer
Assuming TENT CAMPING! If you are taking a Trailer/RV you can take just about anything you desire!

Short trip car> Bread, Peanut butter and jelly, canned stew and vegetables, tea/instant coffee, at least 2 gallons of drinking water, grate/grill for cooking over fire, Kitchen matches with the striker from the box in a plastic bag to protect from moisture, Instant potatoes, box Macaroni & Cheese, Canned Baked Beans. Instant Oatmeal in whatever flavors you desire. Salt and pepper in sealed plastic containers, Sugar and /or any other seasonings likewise in sealed containers. A coffee pot, for heating water for coffee or tea. Anything else you like, which does not absolutely require refrigeration. Ice chest and camp stove are optional but highly recommended! Cold Soda or beer is definitely a plus!

Longer trip car> Ice chest and camp stove become mandatory! But that also allows more flexibility in meal plans, with ice chest and stove you can take eggs, butter and milk to prepare a more traditional breakfast including if you desire Bacon! You can also take steak and other meats to grill ( do not forget to take suitable seasonings!) and if space permits a large cast griddle or fry pan you can take pancake mix (requires egg and milk, and do not forget the spatula!) Take along 2, 10 quart metal buckets to be your wash basins and I recommend Dawn brand dish soap and Scotch Bright Pads to clean up those greasy pots and pans. At least 2 flat hot pads and an oven glove. Durable plastic plates and glasses, and plastic insulated mugs and a set of flatware including a sharp (steak) knife for each person and serving spoons and forks.

Other important items: You will need a multi-purpose pocket knife ( Swiss Army style - not necessarily brand - and make sure it is SHARP and well lubricated ) Trash Bags. A 6 way screwdriver, a small hatchet with sheath, Take lots of 5/32" nylon line and a couple of pocket lighters when you cut a length of the line seal the end with the lighter so it will not fray. A pack of thumb size candles for fire starting. Pocket Flashlights.

A table lantern - Colman White Gas AKA "Camp Fuel" lantern or battery - Coleman Lanterns last forever and produce vast amounts of bright white light, but they require a steady supply of fuel, Mantels and the occasional replacement Generator and Globe, if you choose the Coleman Lantern be sure to practice lighting it several times during daylight in an outdoor location well away from anything flammable and NEVER EVER EVEN THINK ABOUT LIGHTING IT INSIDE OF YOUR TENT OR ANY OTHER STRUCTURE!!!!!)

Take about twice as many towels as you might want at first thought, 1 wash cloth per person plus 1 dish cloth are sufficient. Pack large zip-lock bags to carry wet clothing / swimwear in.
Collapsible Chairs and camp stools are great but don't break the bank to buy them for your first trip.

Take Clothing suitable for Winter and Rainy Conditions in the area where you will be camping! (Ponchos! And heavy coats! ) Nothing worse than getting frozen stiff because the weatherman blew it! This includes a Knit Cap which covers your ears if the temperature could possibly fall below 50 Degrees F!

Take good warm sleeping bags (rated ZERO Degrees F ) which can be joined together and AIR MATTRESSES! One for each person and a SPARE! Do not even think about camping without air mattresses!

Please plan on purchasing your firewood where you camp to avoid moving around BAD Insects! Take newspaper in a plastic bag for fire starting too.

If Space and Funds permit a set of poles and a camp Fly (10'X10' Tarp) are very desirable to keep the table area dry in the event of rain ( minimum 6 poles and a dozen 14' long lines, stakes, S-Hooks and O-rings - the O-ring prevents sharp edges on the Stake from damaging the line and the S-Hook makes it real easy to attach to the tarp eyes.

Proper equipment and preparation make all the difference between comfortably riding out the storm when camping and being cold wet and miserable when the unexpected .

Have Fun!

How can I secretly get urine out of a sleeping bag???!?

Tracy

I'm on a camping trip, and borrowed someone's sleeping bag. I accidently peed in it. Is there a simple way that doesn't require chemicals or baking soda? Please Help?!

Answer
The simplest way is to throw it into the washer. Do they have a laundry at your campground? Perhaps you could get into town and do the job at a laundromat. You should offer to wash it anyway after borrowing it. That's the polite thing to do.

If you're far from a town, have no transportation and can't get into a laundry or laundromat, here's an idea: Spill a soda on or in it near the stain. Then fill up a big plastic tub or container with water and add a little dish soap. The soda water in the soda will actually help get the smell and the stain out--and you can soak the sleeping bag in the water until it all comes out, then hang it over a couple of branches or the picnic table bench to dry out. Apologize profusely for spilling the soda--and let the person you borrowed it from know you will have the bag laundered as soon as you get home (or can get to a laundromat.) If you handle this right, they will never know you were actually trying to remove pee.

I'm not usually an advocate for lying--but in this case, you're not lying--you're misdirecting a little, but it's not a lie that you'll be trying to soak out the soda--because you will be. The pee will come with it.

Any potted outdoor plants that require NO care?

Lepke

We are about to open the new playground in our community, and would like to put some potted plants (preferably flowering) in the picnic table area. Are there any that require no care (since there won't be anyone to water them regularly, so they will just depend on the weather). We are in Zone 6. They can be small (for tabletop) or large (for a larger pot next to the tables). Thanks for your help.

Answer
Portulaca is the best for flowering but needs some sun. Other than that succulents work great in a no-care garden or pots.

How to make a terrarium coffee table?

I saw large homemade aquarium tanks filled with nature scenes. I want to customise mine to fit my tuscan decor with fountains and such, but the size of my tank/table would need to be 30" wide x 4' long! So how can I make my own, what materials are needed, and where do I look? Examples, websites, ideas would help me a lot!
Thanks!

. Field of the Invention

This invention relates generally to the design of furniture and more particularly to a table displaying a three-dimensional rendition of a landscape scene, such as a golf course scene, that has been recessed under a transparent table top. The construction of the recess in combination with the glass covering gives the appearance of a bird's eye view of the layout of, say, a hole at a famous golf course.

II. Discussion of the Prior Art

Glass tops on articles of furniture are well-known in the art. The glass can serve as a decorative support or it may form a functional part of a landscape.

Decorative support table tops made of glass come in various geometrical sizes and are supported by a variety of bases. An example of an atypical base is the use of a cyprus knee or root as a base for a pane of glass. Driftwood is also a popular base, as are animal antlers and horns.

A typical ornamental use of glass table tops in landscape scenes are those wherein the glass is intended to depict the surface of water, such as a lake or pond surface. In U.S. Pat. No. 4,594,950 to Morris, there is shown a decorative table in which objects on the surface of the glass appear to emerge from a natural body of water. Animals or waterfowl are constructed so that an upper part of the figure is supported on top of the table top and a lower part is supported on the lower surface of the table top, thus representing the submerged portion of the animal or waterfowl. The two portions can be held together magnetically, allowing them to be moved along the surface. Supports for the glass table top are constructed to depict a natural part of the landscape, such as water lilies or submerged tree trunks. Also, the hue of the glass is varied to more accurately depict the nature of the water found at that particular scene.

Three dimensional terrarium-type landscapes are also known. An example is U.S. Pat. No. 2,196,230 to Randel, which describes an artificial miniature landscape in which trees, shrubs and other objects are formed from natural sponge. The sponge is trimmed to form an artistic assembly in combination with miniature figurines and furniture that extend above the surface of the terrarium.

Turning now to prior art golf course facsimiles, a three dimensional surface which is used as a playing field is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 1,591,095 (Meyer). This indoor golf game features a rug-like covering over a rolling "layout" and having a nap, fibers or similar surfacing of different lengths in order to simulate rough, hazards, putting greens and other features of a regulation outdoor golf course. It is fitted into a room or rooms of a building of comparatively confined or limited area but is not embodied as decoration in an item of furniture.

OBJECTS

It is accordingly a principal object of the present invention to provide an article of furniture incorporating an accurately scaled, three-dimensional depiction of a scene.

It is another object to provide an article of furniture having a glass top which serves a display function, permitting viewing of an ornamental but physically accurate scaled model of a famous landscape that has been recessed into the top surface of the furniture.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The foregoing objects and advantages of the invention are achieved by providing an article of furniture, such as a coffee table or the like, having a box-like recess formed therein where the top surface of the recess is to be covered with a sheet of transparent material. Constructed o the floor of the box-like recess is a scale, three-dimensional model of a particular landscape, such as a famous golf hole scene. The recess is covered by a protective transparent barrier. More particularly, four lateral support walls define the box-like recess and also support a first protective transparent barrier on the upper surface thereof. A second transparent barrier comprising the table top spans the entire length and width of the inset and rests upon support posts that are located at spaced locations around the perimeter of the recess. Thus, two transparent barriers protect the scale model disposed within the recess.

The aforementioned objects and advantages of the invention will become subsequently apparent and reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 depicts a perspective view of the preferred embodiment; and

FIG. 2 depicts a cross-section view taken along the line 2--2 in FIG. 1 revealing internal construction of the preferred embodiment.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

A preferred embodiment of an item of furniture for displaying a scale model of a scene, such as a hole from a familiar golf course, is shown in the perspective view of FIG. 1 It is envisioned that other famous landscapes such as battle grounds, etc. could be embodied into this recess, but with no limitation intended, the invention will be explained with reference to facsimiles of famous golf courses and holes at such courses. In this drawing, there is depicted a perspective view of a piece of furniture such as a coffee table 10 having a generally square or rectangular perimeter. A heavy pane of glass or plexiglass 12 forms the upper transparent table top surface and is of sufficient thickness, for example, having a thickness of 3/4", to be able to support the weight of objects or persons who may choose to sit or lean thereon. The pane of glass 12 is supported on a series of frictional support pegs 14, preferably of black hard rubber 3/4" in diameter, positioned around the perimeter of an ornamental top surface 16 that surrounds the central core of the table 10. These pegs 14 are mounted on a support strip 18, which may be made from a variety of materials such as wood, faux marble or sheet metal. To prevent the glass 12 from shifting, these pegs 14 are inserted into holes intermittently bored along support strip 18. The size of the holes is adequate to securely retain the 3/4" pegs 14 to a depth of approximately 1/2 inch. A second support strip 20 of the same or a different material is slightly offset from support strip 18 and assists in providing additional depth to the unit. A final facing piece 22 adds additional height and depth around the perimeter of the central display area 24.

FIG. 2 depicts a cross-section view of a portion of the table 10, along the line 2--2 of FIG. 1. It shows the outer heavy glass table top 12 resting on pegs 14. The coffee table further includes a rectangular base 26 which may be fabricated from plywood, chip board or other similar material and which will have a decorative lamination on at least the exterior surface thereof. This base is preferably 3'6" by 3'6" and between 1' to 11/2' high, while the glass top 12 is preferably 5' by 5'. A brace 28 of a triangular cross-section may be screwed and glued to the base 26 around the periphery thereof to provide a support structure to which the four mutually perpendicular side walls 30, 32, 34 and 36 are joined.

The side walls 30 through 36 are also shown as being formed from plywood and include an exterior veneer 38 which may be wood grained, faux marble or metal, depending upon the "look" that one desires.

A bevelled edge is formed between the side walls 30 through 36 and the inwardly extending top support piece 22. A triangular brace or gusset 40 is disposed between these two members to provide a screwed and glued joint. The support strips 18 and 20 have the inner edge thereof cut at a predetermined angle, as does the piece 22, and a facing board 42 is supported on the inclined surface. A brace 44 which is hidden from view is joined to the facing board 42 and to the top support piece 22 as well as to a vertically extending plywood strip 46 which forms the perimeter of the box in which the scene 24 is to be displayed.

Affixed to the braces 44 and forming the horizontal bottom of the display box is a further plywood or chip board sheet 50 which is preferably held in place by screws (not shown) extending through the bottom board 50 and into the perimeter braces 44.

The support strip 18 has a notched and angled edge 52, dimensioned to receive a second pane of transparent material, such as glass panel 54, which extends over the central core 24. In that the heavy glass top 12 shields the lower pane 54, it need not be as thick. For example, a pane of 1/4" glass would suffice for lower pane 54.

Contained within the box-like enclosure defined by the glass pane 54, the bottom board 50 and the mutually perpendicular peripheral walls is the scene to be displayed. As can best be seen in FIG. 1, when depicting a golf hole, it shows the tee, the green, the fairway and other prominent features. In creating the scene, it has been found convenient to take aerial photos and then apply an appropriate scale so that the hole can be made to occupy substantially the entire surface of the bottom board 50. A variety of materials including various plastics, fabrics, minerals, etc. are used in creating a realistic looking scene. For example, sandtraps, water holes, trees and other objects may be included to add to the realism. A support matrix 56, preferably of a material that will retain its shape such as styrofoam, is placed adjacent to the lower surface 50, preferably of 3/4" plywood. It is cut to accurately resemble the contour of the desired landscape, then covered with turf-like fabric 58. Using other known materials, such as sand, glass and commercial replicas manufactured for model railways, virtually any landscape can be accurately replicated to scale.

This invention has been described herein in considerable detail in order to comply with the Patent Statutes and to provide those skilled in the art with the information needed to apply the novel principles and to construct and use such specialized components as are required. However, it is to be understood that the invention can be carried out by specifically different equipment and devices and that various modifications, both as to equipment details and operating procedures, can be accomplished without departing from the scope of the invention itself.

Green wonder for your table

A touch of green for the coffee table
A properly made terrarium, in which air and water are continuously recycled, can go for months without care. An untinted jam jar, decanter, brandy snifter and the like can be used for the purpose.

Clear and sterilise the container. then using a funnel, if necessary, put 1ââ to 2ââ layer of mixed pebbles and charcoal chips at the bottom and cover with 1ââ to 3ââ of sterilised potting mixânot too much, just enough to anchor the plant roots.

To plant, dig a small hole, then take a plant from its container, shake off excess soil from the roots. Position and spread roots carefully, cover with a thin layer of soil. Moisten slightly with a sprayer.

Put the terrarium in a bright but not sunny spot. leave it uncovered for a day and then cover it. a little moisture should collect on its walls from time to time, and then drip down as rain.

Using stained glass

Glass terrariums are perhaps the most beautiful combination of stained glass and plants. When planted and landscaped they remind you of elaborate Japanese gardens.

A simple combination of a stained glass container, soil, rocks, charcoal, air, water and plants makes terrariums the easiest and most beautiful way to grow and display plants at home.

Make a terrarium

Glass terrariums look elegant
To make a stained glass terrarium one should have:

A basic knowledge of stained glass.

Some coloured glass

Lots of clear glass (so that the plant can be seen)

Appropriate plants

A truckload of patience!

Design a pattern that you would like crafted out of the glass. Probably copy it from a book or magazine.

Trace the pattern onto the required number of glass plates or panels.

Cut the glass panelsâbig and small, according to the pattern.

The glass panels are now ground and foiled and finally soldered together to create a terrarium or a planter as per your design.

Choose small plants

The terrarium is now ready for planting. Place gravel, soil and charcoal at the bottom. Landscape it with some decorative objects like shells, or a few pearls, corals and the like, and set your plants inside.

Choose small plants or select miniature saplings like those of cacti, asparagus fern, ferns, parlour palm and geraniums. Although cacti would grow best in an open planter, the stunted variety is suited to growth in a terrarium.

Water your plants sparingly. Make sure that the soil should be moist and never soaked or saturated. Place the terrarium in good light but not direct sunlight.

The terrarium or your miniature glasshouse, green with plants is now ready to embellish your living room windowsill, coffee table or even highlight your hitherto conventional garden!

I'm in 7th grade. My school has a lot of land but not a lot of equipment. We have benches and tables, 2 small basketball courts (both broken nets), and a soccer net. Please Help!

Answer
In 7th grade we used to play a game called butts up, where you would throw a tennis ball against a wall, and if the other guy missed the throw he had to stand against the wall and you could nail his butt with the tennis ball. Pretty fun :)

What colors are best for my humble patio furniture?

Q. I am moving into a home with a cute little side, covered patio. It is rectangular with several small trees on the side. Nothing special. Just some concrete and a wood cover. I currently own some nice deep green plastic chairs and a white bench with table. What colors would you recommend spray painting them? All the same color or separate? Dark wicker planters, stone planters, and a medium stone waterfall will be coming with me as well. Thank you!

Answer
Either match the green or beige, white shows dirt so much. If they are nice and pretty now then don't spray paint them until the need to have a nice little touch up to look new again. Does the wood cover need to be treated yet? If so, a nice red cedar finish with the other stuff painted to match would look good.

A garden table and a bench cost $1000 combined. The cost of the garden table is three times the cost of the bench. What is the cost of the bench?

Answer
cost garden table = 3x (because the cost of the garden table is three times the cost of the bench)
