I'm planning to go to Lake George this summer (with a 2 yr old), and is looking for recommendations on places to stay. Clean, and comfortable. Doesn't need to be fancy. Also don't mind to be far (away from bars, night clubs and such, since we have a bay). Thanks!

Answer
I'm seeing cottages for as low as $500 per week, and townhomes for as low as $450. Take a look at these:

Orange County wedding reception, casual, hawaiian style luau, any recommendations?

V.Ortiz

My mom is getting married in September and since it is a 2nd marriage for both, they want something very casual, more like a celebration or party, and as cheap as possible. Any ideas for perhaps a park or beach area that we could cater food, have some tables and chairs but they don't want sit down dinner, just a casual hawaiian luau stlye party, outdoors in the daytime, located in south orange county between San Clemente and Huntington beach. Or inland.

Answer
San Clemente State Beach has a historic cottage with patio oceanview and catering kitchen for the reception. Exit Califia off the I-5 and turn left on Basilone Road. Call 949-366-8589 for information.

Can you use table salt to clean new belly button piercing?

I know people recommend sea salt, but what's the difference. Is table salt bad for a new piercing?

Answer
Sea salt is a natural disinfectant. Use SEA salt, not table salt. I would assume table salt would do nothing. Why does it sting when you go in the water at the beach when you have a cut, because it is disinfecting. Why do your cuts heal faster, it speeds up the healing process. So if you want your belly to not get infected and heal faster, sea salts the way to go.
I got my belly peirced almost 3 years ago, sea salt all the way!

Are there any calm beaches near the north shore in the winter months?

Steve

Staying at Turtle Bay... I know the waves there will be big, wondering the closest beach thats good for swimming, with low waves. I will have a car so can drive a bit. Any suggestions?

Answer
Malaekahana State Park is sheltered by an outer reef so it is usually very calm. It has a beautiful beach (see the URL below) which has very few people. I was just there several days ago and it was great. Goat Island is about 200 feet offshore and has two small secluded beaches. The water is shallow enough to wade out to.

http://www.hawaiigaga.com/oahu/beaches/malaekahana-state-park.aspx

When you drive in to the parking area go all the way to the end then walk out of the end of the parking lot. There is a bathroom and a lot of picnic tables. Just beyond those is a long beach.

You can do a Google Images search for "Malaekahana" and get many more pictures.

Shark's Cove has a very sheltered area for snorkeling but the water is only about three feet deep. The open area of the cove gets large waves in the winter and can be dangerous.

Check with the concierge at Turtle Bay for more up-to-date information.

January 23, 2010 UPDATE
To show you how variable the surf is in the winter, this morning the surf is down. Sunset Beach is 2 - 3 feet. Pipeline is 1 - 3 feet. The Volcom Pipeline Pro surf meet was cancelled. This means you can basically swim anyplace. Again, check with the concierge at the hotel for the latest conditions.

Also, when you get to the beach, look for the lifeguard towers. Ask what the conditions are and if there are any problems. Sometimes there can be currents that are not obvious.
