Hiking Table Mountain in Cape Town?

Rico

Has anyone hiked up Table Mountain? It looks fairly easy but all the guides say not to hike it alone and go in a group. Isn't the trail well-marked and stable?
Also: I'll be there in mid-March. Can I look forward to good weather?

Answer
I hiked up via the longer but easier back route (from Camps Bay) some years ago, it took about 5 hours and was not very difficult. Luckily for us there was a group ahead of us that knew exactly where to go otherwise we definitely would have got horribly lost. The route was not well-marked. There are also many different routes and tracks. If the weather deteriorates, you may not be able to see where you are going. You can get very disorientated when it is misty.

The front route (not the sea side) is shorter but much steeper and quite dangerous.

There have been several attacks on hikers so do not carry valuables other than some money for refreshments (not cheap) and the cablecar down and definitely do not hike alone (anywhere, ever, in case of injury or attack).

Take lots of water or you will get dehydrated.

I have a book called A Walking Guide for Table Mountain by Shirley Brossy describing 34 different routes and I also have a separate fold-out map for Table Mountain that is better than the diagrams in the book. You may be able to buy this from Cape Union Mart.

You may be able to join a group hike organised by a local walking/hiking club? There are some organised hikes by Cape Union Mart Hiking Club (see www.cumhike.co.za). Also have a look at www.trailsclub.co.za and the clubs in their links page.

The weather should be fine that time of year.

@EssJay: I presume by the "top" you mean the cable car station area which is a very small part of the top of Table Mountain.

Camping at Pinecrest?

Shelly H

What are some activities that are fun to do with friends while camping? Any good camping stories? Good camping pranks to play on friends? Traditions? We are going camping at Pinecrest Lake this weekend.

Answer
The whole area is like a huge summer camp for everyone so I'm sure you'll have fun with your family.

"Pinecrest Lake is located 30 miles east of Sonora on State Highway 108. The Lake lies in a timbered setting at an elevation of 5,600 feet. The California Department of Fish and Game regularly stocks Pinecrest Lake with rainbow trout. Groceries and other services are available nearby at the Pinecrest commercial center.

Pinecrest summer visitors enjoy swimming, boating, hiking, camping, fishing, picnicking, interpretive programs and biking.
* http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/stanislaus/summit/biking.shtml
* 300 camp sites with tables, grills, flush toilets and piped water in 2 campgrounds (Pinecrest Campground and Meadowview Campground)
* 3 group sites with tables, grills, fireplaces, vault toilets and piped water in 1 group campground (Pioneer Trail Group Campground)
* Day Use Sites: Pinecrest Boat Launch; 50 picnic sites with grills, flush toilets and piped water in 1 picnic area (Pinecrest); Designated swim area. No dogs allowed in Day Use Area (between Pinecrest Lake Road/Pinecrest Avenue and the boat launch and the fishing pier) from May 15 to September 15.
* Fishing (accessible fishing pier)
* Hiking: Pinecrest National Recreation Trail, a 4 mile hiking trail around the lake; Paved pathways connecting points of interest."
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/stanislaus/visitor/pinecrest.shtml

There's also the resort with activities: http://www.pinecrestlakeresort.com/Activities%20in%20Pinecrest.htm

Here's a story and some traditions:
"August is the month my family makes its annual escape to Pinecrest Lake, a pretty little jewel north of Yosemite. We've been carrying on this tradition for decades, and now my own children jump into the cold water just as I used to, heart willing and teeth chattering.

As lakes go, Pinecrest isn't particularly spectacular, and it isn't even large enough to allow waterskiing. Nevertheless, when I read our cover story on best lakes (page 86), I thought of Pinecrest because it's the setting for so many of my best summer memories. I caught my first fish there (a brown trout I carried back to camp clutched in my hand after my brother took off with the creel). Made old-fashioned peach ice cream and roasted marshmallows. Learned to drive my uncle's outboard, and did more bailing than sailing aboard the Suzy Q his ancient wood sailboat. When I think of summer, I think of these pleasures at the lake...."
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1216/is_2_207/ai_77875543

I actually caught my first trout here too, and just thought of it after reading this story. Here's the pic: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z106/yahooanswersimages1/PINE1.jpg

Which City is better? Redding, CA or San Luis Obispo, CA?

Korey

My wife and I live in Washington state. We're looking for a city to move to in California. She is a hair stylist and I wait tables. We want a good place to raise a family. Redding And San Luis obispo are the two places we've been considering.
We're looking for good weather, low crime rate, good schools, and a decent cost of living (considering our professions) I'm an ultra-runner, so trails are important to me as well.
In your opinion, which city is better? Any other suggestions?

Thanks :)

Answer
There is really no comparison. San Luis Obispo is awesome. Redding is hotter than hell in the summer. The cost of housing is likely to be higher in SLO. Santa Maria is probably less expensive.

San Luis Obispo is a college town. The beach is about eight miles away (Avila Beach). The Five Cities (Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, Oceano and Shell Beach) are about ten miles south of SLO and you should consider living there too.

There are plenty of trails in the area, including a lot of trails on the Cal Poly campus.

Answer
I disagree with the other two in regards to Thailand. I went to Phuket and it was a fantastic place. I would NOT, however, go to Bangkok as that is where the problems are. You can get to Thailand by land, but I'd suggest air. If flew from Kuala Lumpur (roundtrip) to Phuket for $170USD. We stayed on Karon Beach which was nice and far enough away from the 'tourist area'.....yet it was close enough (10 mins by cab) to that area for shopping. You can buy silk dirt cheap there (suits, shirts, table runners, etc) and the clothing can be custom made within days for very little (shirt $25/suit $100-120, etc). If you make it to Thailand, you need to go Elephant Treking in Khao Lok (about 1 1/2 hrs north of Phuket). It was an amazing adventure.
In Kuala Lumpur, shopping is great (street markets)! They do have original products, but a lot of the knock off are pretty well made (just have to be careful). Any type of food you want is available....especially in and around The Petronas Towers. (The towers also house the KLCC Mall). When in KL, I stay at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara. The service, rooms and food are top notch. It's walking distance to KLCC and the Convention Centre which houses the AQUARINA (a must see if you like aquariums....it's amazing!)
The bus from Singapore to KL is approx $45 USD and takes 4-5 hrs. It's a pleasant drive, food is included in the price, they stop 2-3 times for comfort breaks and the bus I took had a tv in the lower lounge so we could watch a movie or two. Flights are faster (45 mins) but I've not done that so can't give you the price. The local 'cheap' airline is AirAsia....so check that our. They have another new airline but I don't recall the name.
In Singapore, you HAVE to go to SENTOSA ISLAND. A cab ride to the bay isn't very much...then you ride over on a SKY LIFT which is awesome and you can spend the entire day on the island........the activities there are numerous AND there is a beach....it's really, really, nice!!!!

If you have 15 full days (excluding travel to/from where you live), I would think 3 days/3 nights Singapore.....1 travel day to KL.......6 days/5 nights Kuala Lumpur.....1 travel day to Thailand......4 days/3 nights Thailand.

DON"T TAKE CHEWING GUM into Singapore (it's against the law). If you smoke, don't take more than a few packs of cigs into Singapore as you aren't allowed (they'll destroy them at Customs). As far a KL and Thailand, there aren't many NO-NO's.....KL is VERY hot and humid (acutally Singapore and Thailand are as well).....and most days have 30 mins or so of rain......(unless it's monsoon season!!)

There is so much I could tell you but then I'd have a novel going on here....so hope that this has helped! ENJOY YOUR VISIT!!!

Camping Indoors, need ideas!?

gelcoolgir

I work for a summer camp for kids between the ages 5-10 and this Friday we are having an indoor camping day. We have decided to have four or five tents set up and in each tent do an activity. In one tent for sure we are making smores. We just don't know what other activities to do inside the Other tents. Later on the kids will gather around in a circle and tell stories but we need ideas to do in the tents. Any help!> Thanks!

Answer
Orientaltrading.com have a bunch of great camping crafts that would be good for some of the activities. Other ideas:
Make Bird Feeders
Sand Art
Camp Buckets-Have the kids paint a 5 gallon bucket. They can then use them for seats.
Glow in the Dark hats-Let the kids decorate hats with glow in the dark paints.
Stick picture frames or stick art
Newspaper outfits-Have a tent with a bunch of newspapers and let the kids make hats, skirts, vests, etc out of the paper.
Animal sound and footprint tent-Have a CD of animal sounds and have the kids try and guess what they are. Then have them look at different types of animal footprints and see if they can guess what animal they belong to.
Name necklaces-Get letter and colored beads and let the kids make a necklace.
Nature rubbings-Gather bark, rocks, leaves, etc and have the kids place a piece of paper over the object and then rub with a crayon.
CD Campfire-You will need :Rocks â about the size of a quarter, Sticks, A handful of soil, dirt or sand, White craft glue, Small scraps of red, orange and yellow tissue paper, Toothpick
Cover CD with glue and use a paintbrush or your finger to spread the glue out for an even coat. Cover glue area with dirt or sand and tap off excess.
Use your finger to push back a little of the dirt from the edges, all the way around the CD, to make room for the rocks.
Squeeze out a generous amount of white glue onto the cleared edge of the CD. Press a rock into the glue. Repeat until entire rim of the CD is covered in rocks.
If necessary, break sticks into approximately 4 inch pieces. Using white craft clue, build a "fire" with the sticks by laying them down in a teepee formation, gluing as you go. Let everything dry for
Tear tissue paper into small pieces, approximately 1" or 2" squares. Then shape into flames and glue on. Let project dry completely overnight.

Flowered Placemats-For each place mat, cut 2 pieces of contact paper approximately 12" x 18". Peel the backing off one piece and lay it sticky side up on the table. Remove blossoms and leaves from their stems and arrange them on the sticky side of the contact paper. Press everything flat with your fingers. Some flowers will work better if you remove the petals and use them individually.
Peel the backing off the 2nd piece of contact paper. Place it sticky side down over your arrangement. Do not worry about lining up edges exactly. You will probably get some wrinkles. Just press everything down as flat as possible and your place mat will look beautiful. Trim around all edges with scissors.

Make ice cream-1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup milk or half & half
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
Ice cubes
How to make it:
Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully.

Ideas for a Oregon Beach Wedding?

Rachiebaby

I need help I am thinking of Ideas for a Oregon beach wedding. I am going to be getting married in July. I need to some help thank you.

Answer
Oh this sounds lovely.
How bout doing the whole retro beach party idea complete with a clam bake?
You could use a movable dance floor and set it up too.
Use picnic tables or rent folding tables, secure the table cloths by stapling them down.
You could also use make some really cute place cards using sea shells. Paint the guests name on the shells with a gold leaf pen, glue the shells to Popsicle's sticks. Using small clay pots filled with sand , stick the Popsicle stick into the sand and set at the seats.
Oh,,,and you could use small beach balls in the center pieces too.
Hope you have a great wedding!
Good Luck

ideas about making tables out of random things?

Haley_Broo

recently i saw a coffee table made out of old pallets and i was wanting to make a coffee table out of something you wouldnt normally see..Im looking for a colorful/modern type of look! Any ideas??

Answer
Yes, I full agree that you can make tables using old pallets. Old pallets and be used for many things.
We have three medium sized tables on our rap around deck out side that husband made from wood he collected from different places when we still had our out-door wood burner. I'd see a piece of wood that I knew had potential for a table and the work began. We have been using them for at least five years now. Simply made, but very durable. Just the thing needed for end tables for an out door deck. I like the the rustic look anyway so they fit in great for there use. Husband also made a table and small simple benches to use around our fire pit.

You are saying that you're looking for something that is colorful and modern looking. Any wood can be painting, but I don't know about the moder look when talking pallets.

Have you considered using a large foot rest that you can use for both foot rest and coffee table. This kind of thing is used all the time. You get two for the price of one. I always liked the idea, but it just wouldn't work with my house, but could with yours. Something to consider. Perhaps you could go hunting to second hand stores for a medal framed table on the modern side. Even if you would have to replace the glass it still might be worth purchasing with the frame is cheap enough to re-due.

Get out there a hunt second hand shops, rummage sales, even Goodwill stores. You never know what you can find at half or less the price than new. Bring in home and begin your project. Always be sure before you buy. You don't want to wind up with three different things that you decide you can't use. Get a picture in you mind of what you looking for. It's out there waiting for you. I've re-done and old cart on wheels for use in my kitchen. I'm sure you can find something to use for a coffee table. After you re-do it, now you can call it your own, and it's brand new again. It's fun to see something old come to life again. Good luck.

SURVEY: ever made anything of wood? i dont mean grade school popsicle-stick things, but a piece of furniture..

Happy

...or something? i've made a few coffee tables and a nightstand. the nightstand was first. pretty decent, too. used cherry with a deep red stain.

Answer
In high school woodshop I made a beautiful piano bench. I had an old piano with a chair. Made my own bench out of oak. It was very strong and good. Had a flip up top for music and everything.

I gave it to a preacher friend of mine to use for awhile. God called him to a ministry in another town and the b@st@rd took my bench with him!

Whether God called him or not, I'm not sure, but I KNOW God did not call my bench to move on. That gosh-darned mudder freakin' preacher! Shinola!!!

What is the best PC table/slate/tpouchpad ?

EM8894

I am ready to buy a tablet, but i want the best tablet there can be in the whole world !!! When i get something newlike an ipad, something better seems to come up like the ipad2 so i just want to know what is the best pad or tablet i should get. I want to impress my friends, but i dont want them to get me back with something better than what i already got.... So please help me..... I am thinking the ipad 2 , but please !!!!!!!! Help me i need the best tablet in the world !!!!!!!!!

Answer
Definitely get the ipad 2!

It's an unbelievably cool product! I've had it for a week now, and it has exceeded my expectations in every area but one. It is such a pleasurable experience to hold it and interact with the machine. It is a very intuitive, tactile, and personal interaction with the web.

Having a touch screen to interact with the web is a very different experience than using a mouse.
It is NOT supposed to be a netbook, so reviews which compare what it doesn't have, miss the point.
This is a whole new computing device to accomplish perhaps 80% of what most people use computers for for all the basic uses (email, web surfing, music, movies (the Netflix app rocks!), games, ebook, magazine reading (Zinio is great), and the news (the USA Today app is a joy to use) it is great.

I have already been finding myself on my laptop much less often than before.

The iWork apps are a pleasure to use. The one area that seems to be more convoluted than it should be, is printing. You can't print directly from it. You have to either email it to yourself, or transfer the file over when you sync with iTunes. But it looks like the 4.0 version of the operating system is going to provide a lot of fixes which people are looking for.

A few years from now, tablets like this will be everywhere and those who are on computers are mainly using them for work. I knew the ipad 2 would be a big hit when my 70 old mother, after seeing mine, decided she was going to get one too!

As for buying them, your best bet for the cheapest price is off eBay where i've seen them for $170 shipped or on Amazon.com

I've provided links to both below, your choice and best of luck!!

Beach theme wedding decorating ideas?

r

Any ideas of what we can use to decorate the tables at our reception besides the centerpiece?

Please don't say "seashells". We're using these for the center pieces in a bowl.

Answer
I had a beach wedding in Jamaica and was clueless on how to decorate for it. But there are many traditional items you can use and still use to provide a beach themed setting:

*Starfish - we found many different colors of these to maybe use with place cards
**Floating Candles/Flowers - If you're doing an evening event, these would look great surrounding the seashells
***Pictures - Beach scenery like the sunset over the water, water excursions, boats; you could also do some games with the picture idea, have people write out their best vacation ideas or guess your honeymoon location

You have so much to work with; use Google Images for additional help.

i need ideas for place cards?

Q. for the head table at a wedding. i'm making them for my sister and i'd like some creative genius :) thanks!!!

Answer
Does she have a theme? For example if it is a beach theme you could make the place cards out of seashells. If it is a casino theme you can make the place cards out of poker chips...you get the idea.
If she doesn't have a theme for the wedding then do something that is based on her colors. You may also want to think of using something other than paper...maybe you can have hers and her future husbands name etched onto glass...this way they can keep them as a present/memory.

is housing in camp carol furnished?

BLUEMUNCH

if you have any info at all please help me out.
im going to camp carol with my husband in about a month
and i need to know what to expect.

thank you so much for your time.

Answer
Housing I believe is at Camp Walker not at Caroll itself unless that has been added recently. You will get loaner furniture if you are in housing. Fridge, stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, some electronic converters. For furniture itself it will vary sometimes they can provide beds, sofa, entertainment center, dining table, chairs, desk until you things arrive and they may allow you to keep it while you are there if there is a limit on how much weight you are allowed to ship HHG. Best is to contact the housing office at Camp Walker or your sponsor to get the information.

THE BOOT CAMP TRUTH....?

Q. I am nervous about Boot Camp...NOT SCARED, BUT NERVOUS... I have heard nightmares about it and I just want to get the truth from someone that has recently been through it... NO SUGAR COATING... PREPARE ME FOR WHATS TO COME....

Answer
Ahh the memories, phosphorus melding into the Monterey fog, Drill Sergeants putting us in the thinking position. CS, blowing up Bambiâs dad with a claymore, first aid and how a bandoleer can hold things in place, chow, KP, pots and pans, having the Range Officer screaming cease fire while some idiot is firing on a civilian aircraft ( it was not me ), same thing except it was a yacht in no mans land behind the dunes in Monterey Bay, the guy that got hungry and ate poison ivy, wild pigs in bivouac area, being choked out for not saluting the aggressors flag in escape and evasion......AND WE ALL LIVED, SO WILL YOU!!!

Keep the pie hole shut and listen.

Think out your questions...it's the Army...do not appear that you were not paying attention!!!

Do not point at food and ask WTF is that:
If it is a green looking meat like substance that is "Mystery meat". Chow down it's very good for you!
If it looks like lumpy burnt oatmeal it's SOS.
If the SOS is poured over a something ...that is a biscuit not a hockey puckâ¦though itâs hard to tell the difference!
If it is yellow and dry it is cake. Just stick it in a glass of milk, it will be fine.
If it is brown and poured over rice it is chili.....maybe...could be gravy made from left over bacon grease.

You think it will make you fat???

NO PROBLEM! I will just PT you until your legs are wore off to the knee's and your arms to the elbow!!!

ARE WE CLEAR???

WELL ARE WE???

GOOD!

Close enough anyway!

Traveling around Europe for 2-3 months. How much money do i need?

Lavender

I'm saving up money to travel around europe for maybe 2-3 months and i'm wondering how much money i should expect to need to live comfortably.
Of course it depends on what exactly i'm going to do there, but i'm wondering if it's expensive to travel from one country to another. I don't know how much money i should save up.
P.s. I live in Australia, so how much australian dollars please.
Thanks

Answer
Hi,
I spent around 6 months in EU this year, working and traveling. I am American but I live in Melbourne now...I suppose I spent around 1500$ US (2100$ AU) for each week traveling...but read on as comfort means different things and can come at different costs.

Use this site as a guide for airfare prices & booking http://www.skyscanner.net/

Use this for trains (though the German site doesn't give you a price if the service is originating in another country like France etc )
http://www.bahn.de/db_uk/view/index.shtml
http://www.raileurope.com/index.html

It is often quicker and cheaper to fly from one place to another. However, the trains will bring you right to the heart of the city & the airport is often outside the city. So you will have to take a train/shuttle/taxi into the city if you fly factor that in when pricing travel and allocating time.

If you want to go by train you can look into youth rates (especially for multi-country get on get off passes) (under 25-26). No, they don't care that you are a 30 yr old grad student...you get no discount unless you are under 25/26. http://www.eurorailways.com/products/trains_passes/multi_countries/index.htm?gclid=CKC6qOKdiZgCFQghegodh0psDQ

But some services will take the ISIC card, its very useful for discount entry fees etc. http://www.isiccard.com.au/cpa/htm/htm_home.asp

The AU dollar is not great at the moment. Expect to see the same currency amount you pay here but in ⬠(Euros)...so that means a standard sit-down meal with a server is around 25.00 for your main, but it's 25⬠(not 25$ AU) & at the moment that is 48$ AU. Cheap eats are all over though so think Samosas and cheap Thai etc. In Rome at an outdoor cafe that looks nice it could be 10⬠to reserve the table for later and 45-65⬠for the main. Be warned NZ and AU wines are WAY overpriced in EU. They wanted 150⬠for a bottle of 2007 Oyster Bay Sav Blanc...no kidding...it's good, but not that good.

Use this site to check to see what your AU dollar will get you in Euros, it changes all the time; recently it has seriously moved up and down, so no one can give you are real $ amount. http://www.xe.com/ucc/

Some countries like Switzerland and Italy can be especially pricey. We spent 12 days from Geneva, (flew) Budapest, (train) Bratislava, (train) Prague, (flew) Rome, (train) Venice, (train) Geneva and spent around $4500.00 US (not including intl airfare) but we stayed in 4 star hotels, that is 'comfortable' for me. But your level of comfort may be different.

I spent 17 days in April/May in EU and UK and stayed in 2-3 Star hotels and "nicer" hostels...and I wasn't happy. I wasn't happy because: almost every single room smelled like cigarette smoke (yes even the non-smoking ones, as smoking is still very popular in EU and not as restricted as here); the noisy drunk students; the really, really bad breakie food, lack of late night transport other than taxi etc. Hence, when I started traveling again in Oct-Nov I stayed only in very nice hotels.

Also, watch the bed size and number when booking hotels in Europe. On more than one occasion they gave us one double/full size bed for 2 adults who did not want to sleep in the same bed together. We got the "Oh, you are not married? But you booked together." reply when we said we had specifically asked for (but had not confirmed by actually speaking to them), 2 twin beds. So twin rooms don't always mean 2 twin beds, you should call, write, or email them about this specifically if it is a concern for you.

Don't forget to look at staying at Universities, I stayed at an Oxford College and ate breakfast each morning in the "Hogwarts" dining hall for a very reasonable rate.

Do yourself a favor and really read the online reviews about the hotel if you aren't booking on the spot site seen...some claim to be close to everything but 'the bus' only runs until 10pm and then you are stuck taking a 70⬠taxi ride home on a Sunday night.

Trains: they are nice but take forever compared to flying and aren't well equipped food or power wise. We took a train from Bratislava to Prague that was more than 40 yrs old and have never been updated and when I say never, this is exactly what I mean, the whole outside was totally rusted, the toilets where appalling, and we immediately locked our cabin door and a good thing as we had some men thinking it might be nice to come pester us. I don't think they would have hurt us, but at 1am on a train with hardly anyone, you just don't want that kind of hassle.

Typically Eurostar trains are the nicest, first class usually has power points for your laptop, camera etc. Coach does not have power points and was not an option after we spent 4 hrs with some drunk blokes eating KFC and yelling and swearing the whole way from Paris to Geneva. We were sitting in the tabled 4-seat-er, which meant we were facing them the whole way in close quarters using the same table space. Having beer spilt all over you in a

I'm trying to find a place to hold my wedding reception for 500+ people around the cerritos/orange county area?

jane

I love the beach and venues that are aesthetically pleasing (especially for pictures!!!) , however most places that are nice don't fit 500+ people! does anyone have any ideas??? thanks!

Answer
The Anaheim Hilton claims to have the largest space with TWO 28,000 square foot ballrooms plus extra space totaling 100,000 feet as well as the pool area for receptions. Harborside claims to seat "up to 500" but that would be packing everyone in very tightly and uncomfortably. Personally I hate it when you pack 8-10 people at a table touching elbows. I prefer 2 1/2 foot spacing at tables to make guests more comfortable. This might be some help: http://www.orangecounty.net/html/event_facilities.html A little help: You need 2-3 photographers PLUS assistants. Skip the video- nobody ever watches it in the long run and wishes they spent the money on quality photography and flush mounted coffee table albums (plural). Take all principal photos BEFORE the ceremony including those with your fiance so you have time to relax and get the right shots. Family shots too. This will take about 2 hours of time prior to the ceremony starting. After "I Do" you move directly to the party and skip the long delay taking photos. You'll also get a few minutes private time to freshen up and unwind before going to the reception. Have a wedding producer for this size event (not a lame coordinator or planner) and they should have 1-2 assistants helping. YOU should have a personal assistant who is not in the wedding that sticks with you the whole day as your go-fer. Giver her your cell phone with the charger and put her in charge of your needs. Put EVERYONE on 2-way radios with ear-pieces so they can communicate easily all day, even during the ceremony. Make sure the photographers have the same thing on a different channel so they can coordinate shots. If you're in a church negotiate in advance so they understand this is YOUR show, not theirs. You're renting a facility for a private event (your wedding) so don't let them tell you when and where pictures are allowed! My brides always got everything they wanted for photos because we take control of ANY facility including churches; and we don't ask for permission to take those photos. If they want to know, we TELL THEM where we will be taking photos or just do it. Even the pope is photographed during ceremonies but there is always some self appointed "facility coordinator" trying to tell you what you can and can't do with lame excuses like "it's not allowed". That's bull. I could go on and on here but I think you've already gotten about $10k worth of info!

How do you get the soft beach wave in your hair?

Lauren

I have tried everything out there to get my hair soft and wavy, but NOTHING seems to work! If i use gels or hairsprays my hair looks scrunched, the look im not going for. (scrunching my hair doesn't even hold, or look good) Barrel curling irons don't seem to curl my hair at all. Maybe im doing something wrong.. or the products i use aren't fit for waves. Does anybody out there have a miracle product i could try?

Here is a picture:

Answer
You style it the way you like and then use a spray bottle with salt water in it and spritz on hair. Since the salt water is getting in your hair at the beach then bring it from home by just using regular tap and table salt.

How to make a kitchen in a dorm?

Miki

I'll need

Counter

storage

mini fridge with separate freezer door

hot plate

microwave

electric kettle

The communal kitchen is gross so I will probably only use it when I need an oven.

The dorm building is a converted hotel that was built in th early 60s.

No gas but I can do dishes in my sink. The sink and vanity are in a nook in the main room while shower and toilet are seperated so it isn't really in the bathroom.

Answer
You have already included the main components. For me, the microwave and fridge are the keys.
Other possibilities:
-toaster oven (for toast, bake, or crispy warm-up)
-an upright cabinet w/ doors and shelves (self-assembly; can be found at Target, Ikea, Wal-Mart.
Note: it might be heavy to carry. If you live in an earthquake-prone area, make sure to secure it to the studs in the wall.
-a folding table, maybe a lightweight aluminum camping table w/ a wire back to hand utensils on.
(look at a camping store such as REI)
-shelves on the wall, if you can
-a popcorn maker's aroma will attract many friends to your room!

Good eating!

Best lightweight camping chair options?

flight777

Looking for something really light weight with a backrest and legs that can support itself. I've seen the GCI PICO Chair (10 lbs.) and Quick-E-Seat (4.5 lbs.) which are both nice, but I'd like to get the weight down a bit more if I can. I've seen the Alite Monarch Butterfly Chair (18 oz.), but I would prefer a freestanding chair you can use in the typical way. Also trying to avoid stadium style chairs as you're basically sitting on the ground and they are of no help at a table. Thanks.

Links for chairs mentioned above:

http://www.integrityoutdoorbrands.com/camping-stools/quik-e-seat.htm
http://www.alitedesigns.com/monarch-camp-chair-5
I would like to also be able to use this in a backpacking scenario, which is why I'm concerned about weight. Thanks.

Answer
The answer is the old aluminum chairs with the plastic webbing. There is a company making them, calling them retro, and charging $29.95. Better to find them in a garage sale. The ones with the continuous tube legs won't sink in on soft ground, any chair with the post style legs tend to sit unevenly unless on very firm and level ground. They have arms and you can lean back and put your feet up on a rock/log. Problem is they weigh just over 3 lbs. I only carry them on shorter trips (less than 20 miles) or when I expect everything to be wet. On the longer trips I carry a stadium type chair made by Hexalite, cost around $35. It's a big improvement over the inexpensive ones you commonly find. With it I can sit on a rock as small as the seat cushion itself and when properly adjusted it will give me firm back support, much better than any I've tried before.

what are the pros/cons of a pop-up tent camper?

Woodland H

We're considering getting one (probably a 10' for our family of 4) and just want to know what all people experience and what they regret before we buy one. Thx!

Answer
Go for it.

I've owned an 8' and 10' pop-up and a 21' hybrid camper and a Class-C RV. Unless you can afford a Class-C (both the initial purchase and ongoing storage, insurance and maintenance), a pop-up is the way to go. Comfort, storage and convenience are the main benefits of a pop-up.

In terms of comfort, you are sleeping up and off the ground on a well-padded, insulated and flat surface that you can easily get into and out of without crawling around on your hands and knees. Most pop-ups have heat and many have air conditioning. During bad weather you have a well-protected and comfortable place to hang out.

While cabinet space in a pop-up, compared to larger RV's, is limited, it is still sufficient to permanently organize and store all the reusable gear and supplies you need for a camping trip. All your kitchen and dining stuff, cleaning stuff, bedding, etc can be permanently stowed in the cabinets or under the dinette benches. Larger items such as a tabletop BBQ grill, cooler, folding table and chairs can be organized on the floor to fit when the pop-up is closed, and still leave room to add groceries and clothing just before heading out on a trip.

As for convenience, first and foremost is most pop-ups can be towed by lightweight trucks, SUV/CUV and some mid-sized cars. They are small enough that most people store them in their backyard, driveway or garage, saving lot storage fees. With adequate storage to be fully packed and ready to go (except for groceries and clothing), taking that spur of the moment trip is a breeze.

The Cons:

As compared to tent camping, the only con is you're not going to to be backwoods camping or taking it backpacking. There is some annual maintenance required, most of which can be DIY, though I prefer to have pros deal with anything involving propane.

As compared to other RV choices? The biggest disadvantage is the time setting-up the pop-up and unloading the stuff stowed on the floor before you can use the pop-up at all. This means that if you're going on a long distance trip with many short stays, setup and breakdown can be tedious. Clothing storage is a bit problematic in a pop-up, you will need to live out of your suitcases which get stowed on the bunks by day and tucked under the dinette table or on counters by night.

Some things to think about:

A front, outside storage trunk is a wonderful feature.

Unless you plan to do a lot of dispersed / dry camping, don't bother with a bathroom in a pop-up. Although it might seem nice, there's practically no privacy. That space is better used for storage and/or seating.

An outside shower is almost an essential feature. A water heater is also a nice-to-have feature, but it does eat up storage space. A portable, water heater such as Eccotemp, Camp Chef, even Zodi costs around $100 and takes up less space.

Slide-outs on a pop-up are also a mixed bag. A slide-out adds significant weight and, when closed, steals valuable floor space. Most of the time you'll only be in the pop-up when sleeping or to escape bad weather. Having a few extra square feet of floor space when the slide is out does not make up for the lost storage when its closed.

One awning is essential, but two awnings are better. Add a second awning to the back side of your pop-up where you can setup your dining or picnic table. This leaves the normal front-side awning for lounging and relaxation.

Consider an add-a-room or screen room. The screen room is less expensive and will help protect you from insects. An add-a-room has opaque panels with screens in them, and roll-up flaps so you can close the screens for a private, sheltered area. We've used an add-a-room with the second back-side awning and cots to sleep an extra three people in comfort and privacy.

If you have two kids make sure your camper can sleep at least 6, as your kids will usually want to bring friends or relatives along. Once boys get to be about 10-12 years old they will not want to share a bed, but girls -- even teenage girls-- have no problems sharing with a female friend or cousin.

In many pop-ups the dinette bed is less than six feet long. Try to find a model with a dinette bed that measures 72" x 48" so you can fit two full-size people.

Buy used and save a ton. Most folks only use their pop-up a few times each year. Others buy one and use it a few times, then let it sit, while a few use it once and have a change of mind or situation. Even a 10 year-old pop-up is worth considering if it has been kept and stored well.
