wedding centerpiece ideas?

Miss

my bridesmaids are wearing Turquoise and i do not know what color to use with it. does any one have any ideas for centerpieces and bouquets. and my wedding is in AUGUST!

Answer
Please ignore the suggestions using live beta fish. The vast majority of your guests will NOT want to suddenly be given a live fish as a pet, so giving away your centerpieces will not work....and male beta fish must not be kept in the same bowl, so a bride who uses live fish in her centerpieces will end up with 20+ seperate fish bowls to take care of...or her only other option is to flush all the fish. It seems like a real bad omen to kill all of the live creatures that were part of the centerpieces for your wedding.

Now, to answer your question on colors, centerpieces and bouquets:
Turquoise goes well with Aqua, ivory and/or white for a Summer wedding. If you go with a beach theme for your wedding, white, ivory and turquoise or turquoise, light turquoise (two shades of blue) and white would look great.

Going with white, ivory and turquoise will save you a lot of money on rental fees, since you will not have to get special blue tablecloths, you can get white or ivory and use turquoise accents like napkins or favors.

For your centerpieces, use round mirrors on each table. Have a larger vase or bowl in the center, surrounded by small glass votives in turquoise. Put turquoise marbles in the bottom of the vase, fill the vase with water, add a drop or two of blue food coloring and put one or two white roses in the water. Float a white candle on top. The light from the votives and the floating candle will be reflected off of the surface of the mirror, making your centerpiece glow. A fantastic effect.

If you go with ivory and/or white as accent colors, your options with flowers are much wider. Since their gowns will be all blue, I suggest going with simple white flower arrangements...such as bundles of white lillies or white roses with ivory wrapped around the stems. The white and ivory will stand out from the blue of their dresses instead of losing the flower arrangements to too much turquoise.

Just some food for thought. Good luck with your wedding!

My brother is a marine in CA and our family is in KY. He got married after Christmas and he is bringing his new wife to town this weekend. My mother and idea are putting on a coed post wedding shower. Do you have any ideas for centerpieces or entertainment? Thanks.

Answer
How big is your event? Is it going to be like a reception where there are many tables plus food and entertainment? Is there something that your brother and his new wife really enjoy? For example, do they love the beach... if so fill champagne glasses with sand and place a scroll in each one (can be bought cheap anywhere that sells invitations... have the scrolls say something like 'thank you for being a part of our special day', etc....) Place the srolls in the sand with a couple of shells and it looks like a message in a bottle.

tie some ribbon around seed packets and place them inside decorated flower pots... you can spray paint and decorate terra cotta flower pots for cheap.

If I have a little more info I can think of more ideas.....

Wooden picnic table repair.?

fujiwest1

I'm looking for vinyl covers for the slats of our wooden picnic table. The wood table and benches are sagging and splitting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
What I would do is replace the wood and then apply maritime epoxy or boat makers epoxy to the wood to seal it. I'm not sure what you call it exactly as I have heard it called several different things.

The bottom line is that you take two seperate portions and mix them together and apply it with a brush. Once it hardens it forms a clear plastic like layer and will keep all of the moisture and water out. This stuff is used to seal wooden boats so the wood doesn't wear out from being in the water. It is fairly expensive, around $40 a gallon so plan your job accordingly. If you've ever been to a restaurant or bar that has wooden tables with pictures and coins and crap sealed under "plastic like" stuff on the table top, this is what that is. I would recommend using this same stuff on anything wooden that you plan to keep outside year round. Call a few of your local boat dealers/repair places and I'm sure they will be able to lead you where to go for it. I'll paste a link to a PDF that helps explain what I'm talking about.

Camping at Pinecrest?

Shelly H

What are some activities that are fun to do with friends while camping? Any good camping stories? Good camping pranks to play on friends? Traditions? We are going camping at Pinecrest Lake this weekend.

Answer
The whole area is like a huge summer camp for everyone so I'm sure you'll have fun with your family.

"Pinecrest Lake is located 30 miles east of Sonora on State Highway 108. The Lake lies in a timbered setting at an elevation of 5,600 feet. The California Department of Fish and Game regularly stocks Pinecrest Lake with rainbow trout. Groceries and other services are available nearby at the Pinecrest commercial center.

Pinecrest summer visitors enjoy swimming, boating, hiking, camping, fishing, picnicking, interpretive programs and biking.

* 300 camp sites with tables, grills, flush toilets and piped water in 2 campgrounds (Pinecrest Campground and Meadowview Campground)
* 3 group sites with tables, grills, fireplaces, vault toilets and piped water in 1 group campground (Pioneer Trail Group Campground)
* Day Use Sites: Pinecrest Boat Launch; 50 picnic sites with grills, flush toilets and piped water in 1 picnic area (Pinecrest); Designated swim area. No dogs allowed in Day Use Area (between Pinecrest Lake Road/Pinecrest Avenue and the boat launch and the fishing pier) from May 15 to September 15.
* Fishing (accessible fishing pier)
* Hiking: Pinecrest National Recreation Trail, a 4 mile hiking trail around the lake; Paved pathways connecting points of interest."

There's also the resort with activities: http://www.pinecrestlakeresort.com/Activities%20in%20Pinecrest.htm

Here's a story and some traditions:
"August is the month my family makes its annual escape to Pinecrest Lake, a pretty little jewel north of Yosemite. We've been carrying on this tradition for decades, and now my own children jump into the cold water just as I used to, heart willing and teeth chattering.

As lakes go, Pinecrest isn't particularly spectacular, and it isn't even large enough to allow waterskiing. Nevertheless, when I read our cover story on best lakes (page 86), I thought of Pinecrest because it's the setting for so many of my best summer memories. I caught my first fish there (a brown trout I carried back to camp clutched in my hand after my brother took off with the creel). Made old-fashioned peach ice cream and roasted marshmallows. Learned to drive my uncle's outboard, and did more bailing than sailing aboard the Suzy Q his ancient wood sailboat. When I think of summer, I think of these pleasures at the lake...."

I actually caught my first trout here too, and just thought of it after reading this story. Here's the pic: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z106/yahooanswersimages1/PINE1.jpg

what material should be used for a work bench?

Q. I'm building a work/hobby bench and am looking for some recommendations on what material I should consider that will provide a durable /low maintance top.

Answer
The top surface should be durable yet easy to use. If you sit down to work, the height should be the same as your kitchen table; about 30". If you stand up to work, I use 42" since I am tall, but if you are short (Height challenged) you may like something around 36" like your kitchen cabinet bases. I do jewelry avd stained glass. For jewelry, I sit and for stained glass, I stand. You might consider a combination bench with two heights.
I use white-painted homosote glued and screwed onto heavy plywood on a two by four frame for my bench tops. I paint my walls and ceilings white too. It increases your ability to see. If you need clarification, send me an e-mail.

I need to be able to bench more then I do. Can you help?

Q. I found out today that i need to be able to bench more but i dont have a bench press......i have weights but what kind of workouts should i do to be able to bench more??

Answer
The Boi's right; dumbell exercises can be just as good.

But not having a bench is still a problem. Lying on the floor, you can't get your elbows as low as you can on the bench. This will interfere with your flyes as well as your press.

You might be able to press ok if you 'jack up' your upper back on a stack of phone directories or large-format books, or a reading/milking/piano/step stool. You can also improvise with strong wooden or metal boxes, such as large toolboxes. The 'ammo box' shape can work really well, but might need plenty of padding (camping mat?).

If your improvised 'bench' is too short to support your whole torso, your 'core' will benefit from the effort of keeping your body straight (buttocks off the floor at same height as shoulders) while you press.

Pressups CAN be as effective as bench-pressing, but this only usually happens when you add weight, by wearing a weighted (discs, potatoes, water, sand, etc) backpack, and vary the weight to keep your training sets short.

'Decline' pressups (feet gradually more and more raised, on chair, table, windowsill, mantel-shelf, stepladder, etc) can also add power to your 'benching' ability.

'Air' or 'Marine-style' pressups can also increase the explosive power of the muscles that you use for bench-press.

OUTDOOR PING PONG TABLE?!?

J BO

Hello all!

Im trying to buy an outdoor ping pong table because I dont have enough room inside. The table has to have all the official measurements of the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation). Those measurements are 9 feet long, 5 feet wide, 30 inches from the ground, and the table should have 1 inch thickness. The tables that I have found to be "weatherproof" outdoor tables are $1,500 worth and thats too much. Im thinking around the price of $100-500 dollars.

Please give me a recommendation of a good site if you can!

Thanks!

Answer
Outdoor ping pong will be like flying a RC copter. You need NO WIND! That tiny ball will be greatly effected by any wind.

how to build an outdoor ping pong table?

I need an advise on what matereals to use to build an outdoor pp table. Must withstand New England weather.

Thanks.

Answer
Sheet of Marine Grade Plywood; 6 inch by 6 inch Redwood posts for legs. Pressure treated 2 inch by 4 inch wood for bracing. Buy a tarp big enough to cover it in bad weather.
OR like the first answer, buy a table (one that folds up when not in use) and put it out there when needed.

Q. How would you decorate it ?, go room by room, have fun and be creative :D

Answer
WOW GREAT QUESTION!!!
my family already has a beach house...but...

Living Room- Matching blue sofa and chairs, HUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEE wall flat screen, a wii, huge fishtank built into the wall, no cieling, just a huuuuggeee skylight windows, sea paintings, the walls would be a dark blue, the carpet a light blue.

Kitchen-tile flooring, each tile having something to do with the sea (like a shell or a fish) the fridge would be stainless steel, marble countertop, chandelier, stainless steal cabinets, sink with a motion sensor, a high tech oven, stove and dish washer.

Stairs-light blue carpet (from living room)

Upstairs pool room (lol)- HUUUGEEEE inground pool on a balcony so everyone can see that I have a huge pool on a balcony. I would have a smoothie too!

OK i'm tired now I know I did not include bathroom or bedroom BUT ALL THIS WRITING IS TIRING MEH OUT LOL HOPE I HELPED!!! XD

Any ideas of what we can use to decorate the tables at our reception besides the centerpiece?

Please don't say "seashells". We're using these for the center pieces in a bowl.

Answer
You could use mini tiki torches with mini adirondack chairs around your buffet.
Take a large beach towel and cut into little beach towels and add small beach umbrellas.
You can uee small surboards and stand them up in sand in a bowl as a table card nolder
Make small bonfires out of rocks with battery operated candles and broken wood over
Use driftwood and seaweed for a different look

Where can I find the TV base stand for a Samsung 40in tv model # LN40c530F1F?

Q. I bought the tv from Walmart as a display but it did not come with the tv base in order for it to stand on a table stand.

Answer
It is very difficult to finds stands for specific TV's as most manufacturers do not make then to be bought independently. You can try to contact Samsungs customer service and ask but I doubt they will have such option or will know where to get one. And if they do it will be like $250.

Your next chance would be trying to check on Craigslist and see if anyone is selling (or giving away) used or parts only TV of your model or very similar one with stand.

Third option would be to by a universal TV stand such as this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BQM6MI/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=flapantvinf-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B000BQM6MI&adid=0F5W7HGFR0094YRZ2ACY&
They are not cheap, but they will hold up to 50 inch TV.

And if you are considering the above option, check and see if you would like an entire entertainment thing to go with it, for $100 or so more:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001O9CK2M/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=flapantvinf-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B001O9CK2M&adid=1AHGW8ZDVHCP5E2FSMC5&

Good Luck!

What rifle would be the best balance between Whitetail and Elk hunting and value based on price?

cornfedhus

I have a pretty good idea going with a 300 Win Mag or 7mm but would like other perspectives and the best value when looking at manufacturer and price.

Answer
Bound's hubby here:

Personally, I would avoid the new generation of Short Magnums, Super Short Magnums, and Ultra Magnums ... for two reasons ... first, the availability of ammo (especially near deer camps) and second, the designers intend these new rounds to replicate the performance of the original magnums in a shorter cartridge/action.

I would strongly suggest a .30-06 Springfield or .270 WInchester for your hunt. With skill and practice, the .270 is sufficient gun for elk ... as long as the rifleman knows his limitations. The .30-06 should be the standard you go for. Any good rifle will do the job with the .30-06. Look for a Remington, Winchester, or Browning ... any of these rifles will be very reliable and affordable. Do not get cheap on a rifle and/or scope if this rifle will be either for a hunt of a life-time, or depended upon to put meat on the table for years to come!

Good luck!

extended stay in hawaii...?

zZzZ...

does anyone know if any of the hawaiian islands have an exteded stay type hotel? where you can actually live in for a couple months?

Answer
There are A LOT all over the islands. I spent the last 3 years of my life living on Oahu, and I got to travel around to other islands a lot while I was there. It depends on where you want to live, and what conditions you're willing to put up with. I'll give you three recommendation is that I've stayed in.

The first one is on Oahu's North Shore. It's called the Backpackers. We stayed there for just one night when we first moved to Hawaii. It's at a pretty little beach called Three Tables, and it's within walking distance to one of my favorite beaches, Waimea Bay. They have dorm style living (where you share a room with many people) or you can get your own room. Ours was a corner room with an ocean view. There's a kitchen and books and snorkels and all kinds of stuff for you to do. The only thing it doesn't have is location close to jobs. So, if you're going to be working while you're in Hawaii, this might not be a good option for you.

The next one is also on Oahu. It's in Waikiki, like a block and a half from "the duke statue" which is just a landmark people. It's right in front of the main Waikiki beach where they rent surfboards. The Kuhio Village is a hotel/apartment that has one tower for hotel guests and another that they rent out like apartments. We stayed in the hotel side, but stayed one night with a friend in the apartment side. They basically had just a hotel room with a small kitchenette and a balcony, and that's where they lived for 6 months. This hotel is not luxury living though. Everywhere in Hawaii has cockroaches, and this place definitely has it's fair share. It's not a nice, new, luxury resort, but if you're looking for a cheap place to live with a killer location (you can work in Waikiki in a restaurant or bar and make really good money with very few hours), then this is the place for you.

The third place I'll recommend is on the Big Island in Kailua-Kona. We stayed there for one night when we visited the Big Island, but I wish we had stayed there longer. It's within walking distance from super fun Kailua Kona (you can also get a job there if you need extra cash on your trip). I loved Kailua. And the Big Island is definitely something to see. This hostel is more like just a big house that was converted. We had our own private room (again, corner room with ocean view) and we shared a living space with one other couple sharing a room. There was a nice kitchen, TV area, dining area, great big shared balcony with BBQ and hammock, and Internet access.

I would stay in all three of these places again. I put links here for you too, so you can take a look and maybe get prices and rates. Hopefully it will help you make your decision. A lot of people do what you're considering, go to Hawaii for a few months.

I would probably recommend doing all three!! Go to the one in Waikiki, and making that your home base. But maybe go to the one on the North Shore when you first get there for a little 5 day vacation. Then, when you're ready to head home and fly back to the mainland, go to the Big Island for 5 days and stay at that one. That would be a great trip. :)

Have fun!

i want to have a beach theme for my sweet 16 any ideas?

SarSar

my birthday is in April.

Answer
Since you want to have a beach theme, I will assume the birthday party will not be taking place at an actual beach.

I hope you don't mind a suggestion from someone who hasn't seen 16 in a long time. LOL When my sweet 16 rolled around, I actually did have a party at the beach. Everyone wore Hawaiian designed dresses, shirts, bikinis.

There are so many decorations out there that have a beach theme to them. I found a lot of decorations at a store called 'Party City'. I don't know if you have one in your area.

The decorations should have sea shells (All different kinds), Hawaiian designed plates, glasses (plastic, of course), fish netting (Put sea shells on it and hang on wall). Maybe a couple of surfboards leaning in a corner or two. Drape the tables with Hawaiian print materials. Also, hand out leis to everyone who comes to the party.

The music should also be, what we used to call, Surf Music. The Beach Boys had the best surfing music.

Hope you have fun.

Can anyone recommend any good bars/nightclubs to party at in Miami Beach?

My husband and I have decided to go to Miami Beach, FL for our vacation. This is our first vacation by ourselves with no kids! (Our previous plans to go to Cancun fell through) We weren't fortunate enough to be able to go on a honeymoon when we got married either. So... what do we want to do with no kids?? Party and relax!!

Send Photo to a FriendThe Spire Bar is located on the roof top of 'The Hotel', on Collins Avenue, South Beach. It is the type of open air bar that you will not find in London, but instead somewhere like Miami that has great weather all year round. It gets its name from the Tiffany Spire that shines above the bar, giving of a soft glow and helping to create a stylish atmosphere beneath the stars. We visited the bar one evening for a pre-dinner drink. It wasn't crowded at that time, so we took a seat up at the bar. We got a friendly welcome from the barman and checked out the cocktail menu. Alex chose one of the more adventurous cocktails and I stuck to something a little more sedate. We did get a surprise when the drinks arrived.. .they were glowing! There was a novelty 'ice cube' that changes colour.. .you could set it to be one colour or change intermittently - ok, a bit gimmicky, but it made us smile.. .and made for some cool photos!

No requirements, though you may want a light jumper/jacket if there is a breeze

This stylish cocktail bar runs along one edge of the 1220 Restaurant, and continues outside, at the front of the hotel. Sitting outside of an evening at the 1220 Bar is one of THE things to do in South Beach. Relaxing on a comfortable sofa or at a table, sipping a delicious cocktail and watching the beautiful people parade by is a must do! They have a full cocktail menu of intriguing concoctions, along with the usual selection, plus a few wines by the glass (and bottle of course). You can order food as well and make a night of it. Alex sampled a couple of their Mojito's and declared them the best he's ever had, which was backed up by the waiters claims that they make the BEST Mojito in Miami. I sipped on my Margherita and just soaked up the atmosphere.

Send Photo to a FriendOne night during our stay in Miami we had drinks and dinner with Alex's Aunt and her husband, who live locally. They had chosen somewhere really nice to have dinner, and were keen to get there early for a drink. When we arrived, I could see why, as this was one special bar. Part of Smith & Wollensky restaurant, the bar is located right by the water. The 'water' is actually the Government Cut shipping channel, and we arrived just in time to watch numerous large cruise ships heading off on Caribbean adventures. The bar area is quite large, with some seating, room to sit or stand at the bar, and also a grassed area where you can mingle by the water. We pulled up a couple of seats at the bar and enjoyed the early evening sun. We had been warned that mixed drinks were served very strong.. .and that was no lie.. I had a Gin & Tonic that must have been 85% gin! There was a cocktail menu and large wine selection, along with all of the usual mixed drinks and beer. It was a perfect place to unwind after a long day, catch up on family gossip and watch the cruisers depart.

Barefoot Children and Restaurants?

markhoad

hello is it ok for children to play barefoot in restaurant i mean like near the table on the carpet where its really clean.

I know it sounds a bit crazy but i am a single dad of four very young boys, my oldest is 12 my next son is 9 and my younger two are twinned 6 year olds. All my children seem to love bouncing around the house barefoot and only wear socks when going to school they rarely where them when going to their friends house. This being the case my sons always wear sandles in the summer and they want to go out for a meal to a restaurant where they dont have to worry about taking their shoes and socks off. Their little phase thats supposed to be so healthy started at the church sunday school. they never wear shoes and socks in church atall. I guess most people dont seem to mind as they are little kids and you know little kids do this sort of thing but i heard that my friends wife took her shoes of in a restaurant and was told to put them back on or leave.
can restaurants do this if so where can my sons go where they can be barefoot as they asked or is there anything else i could do with them? they dont mind wearing their sandles if they have too but they prefer not too

Answer
Contrary to what many people believe, there are NO health laws requiring footwear in restaurants for customers of any age, child or adult, see source. Unfortunately, many people in the US believe it's dangerous or gross, but this is based totally on myths and greatly exaggerated fears. In other countries it's rarely a problem to go barefoot in various places of business; I've been barefoot in restaurants from fast food to very fancy without any negative comments or looks, and I've never even SEEN a 'no shoes, no shirts, no service' sign here in the Netherlands, nor on my trips to Belgium and Scotland. Even in the US it is accepted in Japanese restaurants -like the one in the source, which just happened to be the one that came up first in Google, there are many more. Think about it -can anyone try to argue that bare feet are unhygienic when the food on the table is American and not when the food on the table is Japanese?

Feet are a lot tougher than people think, in eleven years of going barefoot always and everywhere -including outdoor places *much* more littered than the worst restaurant anyone would ever want to eat- I get a tiny splinter maybe once a year, I've NEVER had a cut.

As for germs, maybe the carpet not being clean, so what? Our skin is made to keep pathogens out, as long as our skin is whole it doesn't hurt us AT ALL to walk on even very dirty sidewalks, let alone a carpet, even if it's a bit more dirty than it may look from a distance. Don't eat off the floor, don't prop your feet up on the table or even on the chairs, but germs on the foot aren't going to hurt. A little dirt is even good for us, see source!

Nor is any dirt that may be on bare feet going to jump off onto our or any other people's food. Germs don't jump off the sole of a bare foot any more than off the sole of a shoe, or off the totally bare skin on top of the foot any more than off the bare skin exposed in a sandal or flipflop.

As for foot odor, this can be a concern when people wear closed shoes and take them off, but when people come in barefoot or wearing flipflops there should be no odor. 'Foot odor' should really be called 'shoe odor'; in a healthy person, it is not the sweat itself you smell, but a substance created by bacteria breaking down the sweat in anaerobe circumstances (with lack of oxygen). As happens inside a shoe. On the bare foot, sweat dries up without causing a stink. Also sandals and flipflops aren't exactly air-tight are they? :)

As for the sight of bare feet being unappetizing to some, looking down at them from the top you still see almost all of the foot in a flipflop (yet for the barefooter, it does away totally with the pleasant sensation of feeling the ground underfoot, the most important thing about going barefoot to me).

Unfortunately there are many people who simply believe any alternative appearance is rude and disrespectful in a restaurant setting, and especially bare feet are disliked by many -in great part because such urban legends about Health Department, germs and foot odor are abound. However these concerns *are* based on myth rather than fact -for who the above isn't enough, please see the main link in the source- and I think it is our differences that make life more interesting and colorful. As for feet in particular, remember they can also be a sign of *respect*; think of how some cultures require bare feet in their temples, of how some monks go barefoot as a sign of humbleness... To me, going barefoot is a very soft, gentle way to walk, making me more aware of my surroundings and Mother Earth. Definitely much more respectful than the unfeeling step in a thick-soled boot or shoe!

Now last as to letting your children play away from the table, in a family restaurant that's fine, there often is even a play area, but if it's a nicer restaurant they're really old enough to remain at the table. I was taken to restaurants at a very early age and my parents always took some books or games to play at the table, I was never allowed to run around the place! People like to eat in peace and quiet, what other customers wear on their feet under their own table shouldn't concern them but kids running and playing among the tables can be much more of a bother.

Beach baby shower theme help?

Q. I am throwing a beach baby shower in early July. The shower will be at a pavilion at a state park on the lake. I've been getting some criticism about this theme saying it has nothing to do with the baby. Any suggestions on how I can mix the theme up and make it more "baby-ish"?

Answer
This theme is very good. A baby shower has to show it's celebrating an infant, but still be elegant, because, in the most cases, trying to make it look very babyish the decor will ends looking too frilly and noisy...as a birthday party.
Take a clothesline and hang baby sunglasses, infant flip flops, beach themed onesies, baby bath suit, baby towels and infant sun hats. Buy some sand pails and place on the table, you can fill them with candies, flowers, sand and seashells or whatever.

Anyway, you're not throwing your own baby shower, are you?

When should I go to Hawaii?

we're thinking of visiting the island of Oahu (north shore) and I want to surf and snorkel and bask in the sun! my family and I are debating on going in February or April and I'm scared that if we go in February it will be too cloudy and the waves will be to big and in Aprril the air-fare will be too high! please help!

Answer
I lived on Oahu for ten years, including the North Shore. February is the height of the big wave season, so it will be full of action: Parties, surf contests, people on the beach watching the waves, surfers from all over the world. You could happen to be there during a big swell and see awesome waves, or you could happen to arrive during a lull between swells and have some calm days good for swimming or beginner level surfing, maybe even snorkeling in the calm areas at either end of Waimea beach or at 3 Tables beach. But there is no way to predict. As long as the weather is good, it should be fun either way. And you can always go to the other side of the island to snorkel and surf if the waves are too big in the north shore. April will be more mellow, with fewer big waves and fewer people. More chance of calm seas for swimming and snorkeling and more chance of consistent sunshine, especially later in April.

I am going to Hawaii in April Oahu & Maui. Anyone have any suggestions on the best things to see & do & eat?

Jennifer W

We are going to be in Oahu for 3 nights and Maui 4 nights. I am looking for the best places to eat, shop, explore and just fun stuff to do. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. This is my first time going & I can't wait!!!!!

Answer
I've only been to Oahu once and that was on an interisland side trip while staying in Maui to see the USS Arizona memorial. And, that is an absolute must-do if you're in Honolulu. Keep in mind, though, that you have to go there and get a ticket in advance that day that's a certain color. Then, when they call your color (which can be a couple hours later), you start your tour. The tour itself lasts a couple hours, depending on how long you stay there. It starts out with a movie presentation in a theater and then the boat goes out to the memorial. You then come back whenever you want.

There's lots to do on Maui (it's where I go every year - I have a timeshare in Kahana on the northwest side). About 10 miles southeast of the airport in Kahului is the town of Paia, where the north swells can get about 15 to 20 feet. It's amazing to see the surfers and windsurfers out there on those huge waves. And, the waves crashing on the rocks can be spectacular. There's also a couple of cool places to eat in Paia Town, right on the main road.

In Maalaea (on the west side of the island, where the road forks to Kihei and Wailea to the south, and Lahaina to the north) is the Maui aquarium. I think it costs about $15 - $20 per person, but it's a very cool place to check out. There's also a bunch of shops and restaurants around there.

Any trip to Maui has to include at least a stop in Lahaina. On the main drag next to the ocean are all kinds of cool shops and restaurants. My favorite place to go is Cheeseburger in Paradise. Get a second floor table next to a window if you can. They look out over the water. But, there's a whole row of restaurants on that side of the street.

Further up the road about 5 miles north of Lahaina Town is Kaanapali. Just south of the Sheraton hotel is a large outcropping of volcanic rock called Black Rock. This is probably the best snorkeling on the island. But, parking is difficult to find unless you pay for valet at the hotel. There's also some rather expensive shopping in Kaanapali. But, it's interesting to look.

One thing that's very cool to do is take a sunset cruise. You can get one out of Maalaea Harbor, Lahaina, or right off Kaanapali Beach. If you take the one off the beach, be aware that you don't wear shoes on the cruise. They back a huge catamaran up to the beach and you rush up the ladder in between waves. So, wear shorts and plan on getting a bit wet. One operator uses a rubber pontoon boat to shuttle people from the beach to the catamaran. Still, it's no shoes and you will get wet.

If you like hiking, two good choices are Iao Valley and the lava fields south of Wailea. Iao Valley is a dense jungle area in the middle of the north half of the island. It has streams and trails, and lots of pools in the rocks that are big enough to swim in. Wear good hiking boots or shoes, and expect to get muddy.

To get to the lava fields, just follow the road signs to Wailea and keep going south until the road ends. From there, you can just start walking south across the lava fields toward the jungle (there's a pretty good path in the jungle). Wear sturdy shoes for this. The lava can be sharp, and it might cut up into sandals or flip flops. The jungle is dry with a dirt path. And every hundred yards or so is another cove with beautiful turquoise water ,and waves splashing up against the red and white volcanic rocks.

Since you're only there for a few nights, I would avoid the trip to Hana. It's an all-day trip, mostly because it takes about 4 hours to drive the narrow highway. Besides, there's not much to see there. Maybe some cool waterfalls along the side of the road or along the hiking trails. But, why waste a whole day? Also, going to see the sunrise at Haleakala is very cool. But, you have to start out at about 3 in the morning and it takes about 3 hours to get there. It's also about 40 degrees with a 30 MPH wind that cuts right through you. And, who wants to pack the clothing needed for such a thing?

Joint Graduation Party At The Beach?

pebbles190

Ok so me and my friend are throwing a surprise graduation party for 2 of my friends( ones a boy and the others a girl) the girl is 18 and the boy is 16(he's graduating early) anyways I REALLY NEED U GUY'S HELP! We really want this party to be absolutely fun and a night that they will remember forever, but I need some ideas on how to keep everyone entertained and just make it a very fun evening WITHOUT ALCOHOL! So please help me, thanks :)

Answer
Surf's up! Have some fun in the sun with this guide for a beach party that surfer dudes, beach bunnies and the whole family can enjoy. You gotta RESERVE the beach PARTY SPOT and INQUIRE as to the BEACHâS HOURS and know the RULES!!! Get to the beach early and allow plenty of time to set up everything.

Provide them with directions and create a big beach-themed signage to hang around your party area to help guests find their way around. Decorating your beach party is a breeze, since the sun takes care of your lighting, and the sea, sand and shells give you lots of natural atmosphere. You can add to the summery scene with colorful beach towels, and bring lots of beach chairs for your guests to lounge on, plus few colorful umbrellas. Also bring the carry-on folding table and turn the beach towels into tablecloths. Bring trash bags for clean up.

Tie some helium balloons to one of your chairs to help your guests find you â but be sure to tell them what color balloons you're bringing, in case other groups have the same eye-catching idea. Beach pails and shovels make great decorations. Get some crazy beach sunglasses.

If you plan on staying until after sundown, bring some tiki torches to light things up, and warm your guests up, when the sun starts to set. A bonfire, if the beach allows it, caps off the evening in true, beachy style. If youâre staying after dark, you might want to pack a sweatshirt and jeans to keep you warm as the evening cools off. And, of course, you should definitely bring sunglasses, a hat, zinc oxide and lots of sunscreen so you donât have to end up wearing nasty sunburn the day after your beach party.

Playtime:
Go get wet in the ocean, play and surf. Set up volleyball net, split your guests into two teams and have a tournament. If youâre not the sporty type, create a contest to see who can build the most impressive sand castle. And for really creative souls, you can play a version of sand Charades: Split your guests into two teams and have all the participants write down objects on pieces of paper. Each team picks a piece of paper and has to sculpt that object out of sand while their team guesses what it is. Have a limbo contest, horseshoes game, hula-hoops, water squirt guns, and play flashlight tag with glow sticks, and donât forget the beach ball.

Food:
Beach party food should be simple and not spoil in the heat. Cook up hamburgers and hot dogs on a beach grill and have fruits like orange wedges, grapes, and strawberries help keep you hydrated in the sun. And for a sweeter dessert, roast marshmallows on the grill or bonfire to make s'mores.

Non-Alcoholic:
Sun tea, Sunkist soda, lemonade and plenty of waters

Music:
Mix some techno your favorite music. Do you have an ipod? Set it up with a good stereo system. If you donât have one, ask one of your friends who does. Follow the beach rules.

Have Fun!!!!

How do I save money on a beach theme wedding reception?

sboyd_hfcc

My fiancé and I are going to Hawaii for are wedding ceremony. There will be 8 guest. We want to have are reception in Michigan. Im in love with elegance with a touch of Hawaii (without being cheesy) to give our guest a filling of actually being there.

Answer
White or pastel table linens, simple flower arrangements, because tropical flowers are not cheap.
You can buy bags of shells online...just Google "wedding shells" and you'll be surprised how many stores there are. Good for table decor.
A simple cake with tropical flowers, and "luau-ish" food and you're all set.
The leis are a nice idea too. You can do Hawaiian without doing cheesy Hawaiian.

What should I do while my finace is in boot camp?

Q. We want to get married when he is done with his training but I have no idea where to start and without being able to talk to him regularly Im not sure what to do. Can anyone give me some advice on how to get things rolling?

Answer
Congratulations!

Right, it's supposed to be a joint thing, but I can sympathise with your situation.

The basic things you will need are
a venue for the ceremony
Someone to marry you
a venue for the reception
a caterer for the reception

Then you personally will probably want a dress, veil, shoes, makeup, tights, bridesmaids, bridesmaid shoes, bridesmaids dresses, transport to the venue...

He will need a suit, best man best man suit, ushers ushers suits.

Other things you will probably need are invites, flowers, rings, orders of service, hymns/songs/music, readings, photographers, place card settings for the reception, disco for reception, favours for the table and a wedding list.

That is just off the top of my head.

What you can do if you dont want to make decisions while he is away.. if do the ground work.
Research local venues, how much they cost, what deposit they want, if they include food..
Research dresses and local dress shops
Think about ushers and bridesmaids..page boys and flower girls
Research photographers, how much they charge
Invite printers
Hairdressers..etc..

Ask about, see if people have recommendations..

See if you and your fiance can set a date and a budget and then that will make it easier for you to identify posibilities.

Most guys dont really want ot be involved in too much of the detials and think that girls enjoy the planning bit. You could split the planning so that you for example plan the music for the service, and he plans the disco (as ths can be done close to the date if you have a dj..

I hope that helps.

Also you can use online wedding planners like http://www.weddingpath.co.uk/ to help you stay in touch and up to date.

I hope that helps.

Dont get too stressed and enjoy!

planning to make a woodworking workbench. question about drawers?

Q. Here is the finished product.

http://db.tt/C1mFBA74

I am a beginner at woodworking. I understand everything about my project except for how the drawers will go. I'm trying to imagine the best way to do it. I have access to a router, table saw, circular saw, miter saw and various other tools. Please guide me in your opinion on what would be the best way to make these drawers.

Thank you

Answer
Go look at the way the draws work on your: desk, kitchen counter, bureau, etc. Draws are basically boxes that ride on metal tracks or wood slats. In the case of a woodworking bench I'd stick to wood slats.

Draw Building Basics, It's a PDF file so you can even print it out. - http://www.finewoodworking.com/pdf/drawerbuildingbasics.pdf

does anybody have or know where i can get some workbench plans.?

i have a 20 ft wall in my garage and i want to put a workbench all the way down it. some drawers under it on one side. and 2 to 3 ft wide..any plans?

Answer
Hi Cody! I have been making things like this in my different garages for about 20 years. And always changing/improving!-lol- I weld, do cars, electrical, whatever. My favorite is a 2x4 frame (wall type:12-16" on center cross bracing "joists") for the table/bench, with legs at each end. (a leg at each 8' length of plywood(basic); add a leg by middle of each 8' section, depending on drawer placement for much stronger bench; in back, I anchor the frame with lag bolts into the wall studs)... For any pounding areas, I place 2x6s(2x8s, 2x?s) laid flat on top of the frame, all laid touching next to each other, perpendicular to the back wall, screw them down, and cover with a thick plywood and screw that down. My welding area gets a steel sheet on top of that. If you want a nice easy clean surface you can go with a prefab counter (like the cheap molded kitchen counters) from a hardware chain, or some you find being tossed. I use to make drawers, but now I find kitchen cabinets/drawers, someone is tossing or selling cheap. Top cabinets on the wall and I plywood top the bottoms cabinets (for no dust and dirt) and also the very bottom, to throw on lockable casters, so I can pull them out and rearrange them underneath, for my future preference. (also much easier to clean underneath and around) That way I am not stuck with my first thoughts/design, either.(no tearing out! ... just move them) There are so many ways to go, designing a working unit, but it really comes down to your needs (what you are going to do with/around it: lightweight to heavy work), budget, and just plain personal preferences. If I can help you more with that, let me know. If all this was even what you were looking for? (Do you need actual plans and dimensions???) -Guy-
