I'm planning to either take it back to the beach or over to my mother-in-law's to put in her saltwater fish tank but I need to know how to keep it alive until morning.
Answer
Is it a land hermit crab or sea one?
If it's a land crab, it will drown if put into a fish tank. Put it in a container with newspaper and just provide it with two containers of water (in a jar lid or something)... one should be decholrinated freshwater (if you own fish use the drops you use for them, otherwise boil water and let it cool down) and the other put a small pinch of non-iodised salt in (like cooking salt, not table salt, important!).
Keep it warm... heat mat or a way to keep the container humid is ideal. If not, at least keep it in a warm room. Although since it's a native species this probably won't be such an issue.
Since it's just until morning, that will be fine. You may want to provide food if you want, such as veges (like carrot) or even rolled oats and such...
If it's not a land crab and needs water to breathe, it will need saltwater. To be honest I have no idea if putting it in your mother-in-law's tank will be ok or not. Will depend on the fish in there, but hermit crabs are generally ok with a lot of community fish... but it also risks putting a disease in the tank, especially if it's a wild one.
Maybe she can put some of her aquarium water in an icecream container or something for you instead and put the crab in there.
Good luck!
