Cranes Beach
Website: http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visâ¦

290 Argilla Road
Ipswich, MA 01938-2647
(978) 356-4354

Description ~~
Enjoy the Northeastâs most spectacular beach and follow trails and boardwalks through a landscape of sand dunes and salt marsh.

What makes Crane Beach a special place?
At Crane Beach, youâll enjoy one of the finest beaches and outdoor recreation destinations on the East Coast. With its clean, inviting water, miles of shoreline, and mesmerizing views, Crane Beach has been a favorite with the ocean-loving public for generations. Whether you intend to take a refreshing plunge, play in the sand, or just soak up the sun, this unparalleled seaside experience is sure to provide lots of fun â and great memories, too.

Thereâs more to see here than sun and sand. Crane Beach is managed for both recreation and conservation â people and ecology â through careful planning. More than five miles of trails wind through coastal dunes here, which shield inland areas from storm waves and flooding. And, Castle Neck is the site of the North Shoreâs largest pitch pine forest.

Crane Beach is also among the worldâs most important nesting sites for piping plovers, a threatened bird that was nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century for its eggs and feathers. Crane Beach has been nationally recognized for its successful shorebird protection program. To protect these threatened shorebirds, we ask that you avoid the fenced nesting areas and the wrack, the line of washed-up organic debris where the birds feed and hide.

Trails
5.5 miles of trails traverse dunes and track the beachfront on both the Ipswich Bay and Essex River Estuary sides of the Castle Neck peninsula. Moderate hiking. These trails are part of the Bay Circuit Trail.

When to Visit
Year-round, daily, 8am to sunset. Allow a minimum of 2 hours, 6 hours if also visiting Castle Hill (including Great House or landscape tour) and the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Please note that dogs are welcome at Crane Beach from October 1 through March 30 through our Green Dogs program. Learn more >>

Facilities
In-season: Lifeguards and rangers, bike rack, bathhouses (with toilets and changing area), outside showers, picnic tables, Crane Beach Store (refreshments and merchandise: view the snack bar menu), drinking water fountains (located outside the bathhouses), information kiosk, transportation for mobility-impaired and challenged visitors. What is the best method of staining wood?

Q. I just bought a kitchen table, four chairs, and a bench, all unfinished. I have never stained unfinished wood before. The type of wood is parawood. I've been told it is a "hard" wood and does not need any conditioning or pretreating before the stain is applied. Any tips or suggestions? TIA!

Answer
Sand it first. Those unfinished furniture places don't do a good job sanding. Wipe it down with a 'tack cloth'.

When you apply the stain, it doesn't matter how you put it on. The wood will only soak up as much as it will soak up. Wipe off excess before it dries. The longer the stain stays pooled in cracks and corners, the more will be absorbed in those places.

Lightly sand after stain has dried (24 hrs) with the highest grit paper you can get. (at least 220). Wipe with tack cloth.

Apply polyurethane. When it dries, rub it down with steel wool. The finer the grade, the better. Apply more poly.

The reason that you have to sand and use steel wool is that staining will raise the grain and make it rough. The poly will leave air bubbles and trap dust. The steel wool will smooth these out.

Could I build a child's picnic table from an old door?

meadowgirl

We just moved into an old house and I took several of the heavy wood doors off their hinges, as I didn't want doors on some of the rooms. Our kitchen, for example, has two large pantries. One I am converting into a breakfast/dining area for my children. I took the old door off of it, trying to find a way to repurpose it. I was thinking about using it as the top part of a picnic table. Does any one know if that will work or how to go about it? Any other ideas for what to do with them? They are great, just dont need them.
It has stain/varnish on it, but I would sand it down and make it smooth, removing all of it. Also, any suggestions on what kind of paint I could use to repaint it? It has to be safe for them and weather proof.

Answer
You should support the underside with 2" x 4" runners (treated). Do this on all 4 sides and miter the corners. Use deck screws for attaching 2"L will do it. Drill some 1/2" dia. holes through the top for rain water drainage. Paint the entire assembly with "Kilz". This is a primer/sealer for your 1st coat of paint.
Finish with a water based latex enamel (exterior) and apply 2 coats. You can pick up a folding leg assembly at your local building supply center. Or, you can build your own. The folding leg assy would be much lighter and easier for storing. All you have left now is the benches. Have fun!

I have a question about a camping trailer ?

Kellsey R

http://ifunny.mobi/i5383412?ref=nf#hJzsWy8J <-- click the link

What type of camping trailer is that ? brand? name? model? I'm very curious considering my boyfriend and his family LOVE to camp.... but i hate tents lol.
Thanks sooo much!

Answer
That is a teardrop trailer. Most are homemade but there are a few companies that manufacture them. They first became popular in the 1930's after construction plans were published in Mechanic's Illustrated magazine. The benefits are they are lightweight (usually under 900 pounds), aerodynamic, and require practically zero setup time at camp: just park on a level site, chock the tires, unhitch, pull out your folding table and chairs, open the rear hatch and you are all setup.

All your kitchen gear is setup in the rear and the hatch protects you (somewhat) from the weather. The most popular size is 4x8 feet (built on a standard and inexpensive cargo trailer frame) with the sleeping area measuring around 3'8"x6'0", which makes for intimate but manageable sleeping accommodations for two. There are also plans that use a 5x9 or 5x10 trailer for more space. Inside the sleeping compartment there are usually some shelves or cabinets to stow your clothing.

If you're interested in learning more about teardrop's, http://www.tnttt.com is the forum to visit.

Camping with a 6month old?

highly wor

Im taking my 6month old camping, did you take a 6month old camping, and how was the baby where the pretty content? Explain how everything went. PLEASE ;)

Answer
we took ours and it was great. we brought the play pen and he slept in that, we had a tent that was kind of like a 2 room, so he was in his play pen and we were on the ground in sleeping bags next to him. tips- bring bugspray wipes. they work great on babies and keep him covered. we went in the summer and he got very hot so we grabbed a basin and filled it with water and he played in that in the shade for a long time, while we bbq-ed and ate or cleaned up. you can fold a towel in the bottom so he won't slip around and place it right up on the picnic table next to you. also - get a site with electric, and bring a fan. you don't want him to get too hot during his naps - so good luck. you are going to have a great time!!

What serger should I buy?

chad.rosco

Hiya~
I sew, and I want to sew quicker, and I think a serger is just what I need, so I'm going to invest in one. I want one that an idiot could operate, but that will also offer me good sewing options. I want to sew clothes, and I want to be able to sew knits, and have those fun hems, like rolled, lettuce, etc., in addition to having it cut and sew seams. I don't want a singer, because I had a singer sewing machine that lasted only a year, and then broke, irreparably. So, like a white, or Janome, etc. Price is also a concern.
So, looking for a good sewer, who knows her (his?) stuff.
Ease of use
Options
Brand
Price

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it.
chaddie

Answer
I recommend most people get their first serger locally from someone who will support your learning. There's a steep enough learning curve at first that having someone to bail you out when you're stuck can really help.

One thing you'll notice when you go serger shopping is that there are a bunch of sergers under different names that all look a whole lot alike. For instance, my first serger was a Pfaff that was an almost-twin of a Singer serger -- the Pfaff just had a better motor. There are only about 3 manufacturing companies for home sergers. Juki makes for Bernina, for instance.

The cheapest serger that I know of that gets good reviews from the owners is the Brother 1034D/3034D. The Walmart version is the 1034D, while the one sold in dealers is the 3034D. Walmart won't help you learn to use your machine or care for it; a dealer should. Something to think about as you're trying out sergers.

On the upper ends of the serging world, there seems to be a dichotomy into two camps. There are those who love the easy air-jet threading of the and autotensioning of the higher end Babylocks, and those of us who want to be able to control every aspect of the machine threading and tensioning and want more power, and we're usually in the Juki camp. Juki is a well respected manufacturer, though you've probably never heard of them -- they're just not into advertising much, but the US website does have downloadable manuals for each of their machines. (So does Brother, btw.) Jukis are also a lot more affordable than Babylocks, and yes, I now have two Jukis, one a 5 thread safety stitch machine that I do most construction sewing on, and a separate coverstitch machine made by Juki for Bernina, that I hem knits with.

I'd like to first send you to the library for about 5 books:
Singer's Sewing with An Overlock
ABCs of Serging (which is on sale at a good price right now at ER Hamilton)
Serge Something Super for your Kids (which is an excellent book on learning to change a sewing project into a serger project)
Ultimate Serger Answer Book, the book that never left my table for the first year I owned a serger
and Chris James' Complete Serger Handbook, which is the only basic book I know of that covers coverstitch functions.
Read through those as if they were novels, and then gather up some heavy fabrics, light fabrics, sheers, stretchy fabrics, knits, stable stuff, and go try out some sergers. You'll learn a lot in the process.

When I bought my first serger, I was living about 50 miles from the dealer, so couldn't just rush over if I was stuck. The one thing I'm very glad I did was to take the demo serger apart and clean it and replace the needle and blades using only the manual before I decided to buy it. The salesman looked a bit startled, but, as he said, if I can screw up the machine on the floor, it's 1) not the right machine for me and 2) they can put it back together right. I managed just fine with my test, and went home with a serger than I used for the next 10 years. Good little machine that would still sew if I got around to replacing a broken spring in it. Just not as fast or as capable of handling heavy things as my Juki.

Good luck, have fun, and learn a lot while you're shopping.

Can anyone give me a equipment list for 3 days camping?

Bridget

Answer
hi
my family and i camp quite often we are a group of 6 and this is what we bring

tent
blankets
pillows
clothes

towels
shower stuff (shampoo soap wash cloth toothbrush and paste)
toilet paper
its best to put that stuff in its own small bag to easily carry to the bathroom

coolers we bring a few one for meat, one for drinks and ice, the other for things like ketchup mustard lunch meat
food you do not want to buy when you get there
paper plates
plastic silverware
trashbags
paper towels
camping stove
a pot
a pan
anything you want to season your food with
we have a flat skillet (fabulous you can cook almost anything on it $20.00 at walmart)
spatula
stirring spoon
CAN OPENER (we forgot this the first time we went)
if you will be cooking over the fire s grate from the grill
or small portable grill ($10.00 at walmart)
dish soap
sponge
if you pack these things in a plastic tub you can wash your dishes in it after you eat

flashlights
extra batteries
extension cord
small fan (incase it gets to hot)
small heater (incase it gets to cold)
2 strands of x-mas lights where we camp there is a picninc table with a roof and we put the x-mas lights up so at night we have an even amount of light at the table (also fabulous)
hammer and nails (just a few to hang up things on a tree or picnic table ike the x-mas lights bags with snacks or bread)

deck of cards
maybe a board game if you like to play them
chairs to sit on one for each person
we bring glow sticks for the kids
portable dvd player
dvd's
if you are bringing kids try some finger paints playdough or coloring books to keep them busy
and if you are going to have a fire get some fire wood from the store or a chainsaw (incase the only wood you find is large and needs to be cut)

other important thigs are handsanitzer and depending on the place you are camping maybe some 409 or clorox (the bathrooms are sometimes yucky)
bugf spray and sun block

i know it looks like alot but when you get it packed it really is not the much and we use all of it and have a blast each time we camp
if you are primitive camping then perhaps you will not need half of this but some of the comforts of home are nice we really enjoy being out and away from things like the T.V and work and some of the animals you see are amazing

i hope you have fun

What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base?

Tamera C

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

Answer
the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

is it feasible to live in a camper van all the time? what about being a bit clever about it? could it work?

groovyweir

Basically folks im having some ideas recently and i thought id put this stuff up here where the whole world can join in on this subject. Its all about living in a camper van and firstly let me say i dont mean a VW camper, too small, too unreliable i cant see it happening.

What im talking about here is a nice minibus conversion, like say an Iveco or an LDV minibus or something like that (anyone from abroad they are UK vehicles you'll find them on Ebay to see what i mean.)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=ldv+minibus&_sacat=9800&_odkw=iveco+minibus&_sop=1&_osacat=9800

These have space in them which i think cant be underestimated - i think you'd go mad cooped up all the time.

I wouldn't be filling all the available space with various cupboards and cabinets like i see everyone else doing, leaving a narrow passage in the centre to move about. id prefer carpeted floor, lots of cusions or bean bags, a folding camping table, something like this to cook with :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Azura-3400w-Electric-Induction-Twin-Portable-Cooker-/110965627047?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Kitchen_Ovens_Hobs_Cookers&hash=item19d61118a7

not a whole bloody oven and a whole unit to fill up the van with it, ive used these things in studios etc. before and they are more than fine. I dont see the point in creating a kitchen in the back of the camper, kind of goes against the idea of it i think.

Anyway il continue- so we have a single quite large storage chest with all the stuff inside it, lockable. blacked windows, curtains, nice warm thick carpets, insulation- maybe carpet the walls eh? theres no rules on this stuff- whatever works i think.

So, id have my camper, i can cook in there, sleep in there on a mattress or blow up bed or whatever. Have a camping battery so i can watch movies on my laptop at nights - imagine if you will, living in a small studio. what do you do in the evening? what would be so awfully different? you cook dinner, you sit down with a bottle of wine and a movie. then after you go to bed. Have a small fan heater to give you comfort. Same in the camper.

Now, heres where my clever idea could take this to the next level.
There are problems, security being one of course. Also where to park safely and comfortably at night. people and places get funny about that. What about power for charging your batteries?

well I was sitting and thinking about it and then it hit me - Why not rent a garage!? or a lock up or whatever? my god think of it- it could be ideal? you park in there, every night, rent one that has lights and electricity so you can charge up stuff, it would be warmer. you could sleep safe knowing that padlock cant be broken.
You can use it as storage too! Now the thing about these garages and stuff is that they rent for say 10 per week to what.......50? maximum? not even that!
So if you did all this right, you could pay 100 TOP a month for that privilege and cut out alot of the downsides of the whole idea. Imagine the insurance company when they hear its in a secure padlocked garage constantly? another saving!
Whats left? toilets and showering.
Well, imagine all the money you would save, imagine not paying the rent you are now and instead just a fraction. Id go swimming or working out at a leisure centre and shower there. Get healthy too! Toilet? well come on, adapt right? im sure you could arrange something, possibly utilizing the old water bottle rinsing technique used by our arabic pals hell i wouldnt mind. Or get real regular and go at work/at the gym.

I know this is all a bit odd but just consider it, could it work? i swear it could. Within months you could save up so much money, over a 1000 easy. Sure youd have to get used to it but as i said you would still be living your life. going to work, cleaning yourself, eating, relaxing. What would be so different?

If the garage owner spotted the electricity use a bit high then say your working on your van and stuff and hammer out some little deal.

So, what do you think folks of the world? do any of you do this currently? what about the garage idea? i cant be the only one who thought that. Any of you spend alot of time in campers now? tell me about it please.

I await your feedback and you yea, you can take the piss out of me or call me a dirty hobo whatever but this is a genuine post and question.

Need help coming up with main ideas about the HOLOCAUST?

G

Im doing a project on the holocaust using powerpoint 2010. It has to be atleast 10 slides, a demonstration speech and a research paper. The name of my project will be "The effects of the holocaust." 5 slides will already be used which is the title page, table of contents page, introduction, conclusion and bibliography. I need 5 more slides to make it to 10 but I want to use more than that because I need to get a B+ on this project otherwise I fail the course and I get kicked out of school. I want to use about 6 more slides, but its gonna be divided into 3 main parts. so the next 2 slides will support a main idea #1, the next 2 slides will support main idea #2, the next 2 slides will support main idea #3. All together will be 6 more slides. My question is What should be my main ideas? I cant make this project boring because I'll fail and get kicked out of school. Thats another problem. So I cant make main idea #1, the living in the concentration camps. Oh I forgot to mention, My teacher said this project has to be about a SPECIFIC topic of the holocaust. So talking about living in the concentration camps is another project topic on its own. What should be my 3 main ideas in talking about the effects of the holocaust?

Answer
Here you go:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5032520_build-kitchen-nook.html
http://www.diyadvice.com/diy/built-ins/storage/kitchen-bench/
Find a table and chairs off of craigslist. Build your bench. Cut 2 pieces of plywood to fit the back and bottom of the bench and upholster them.
http://www.upholster.com/howto/slipseat.html
Screw the plywood panels in from the back of the bench.
Upholster the chairs to match.

does your cafeteria have benches or chairs for tables?

Marie

I'm making an outdoor tile bistro table for a school auction.?

ohbrother

My idea is to have the children in the class each decorate a tile and then set those tiles on a metal/iron table. What medium should I have the children use? Does the tile need to be kilned? Can I get away with acrylics and a protective gloss? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am a beginner and craft impaired. Thanks

Answer
What a great idea! If you don't want the expense and are pushed for time I wouldn't use the kiln method. I have an idea -try pre-glazed tiles(Home Depot, Lowes) and use sharpies to color them. They have sets with 25-30 different colors and different size tips that you could probably find at Michael's or an office supply store. Good luck!

Does anyone know were i can get outdoor table and chair covers and a long wire rope to tie them up?

ps2iscool2

I have a an outdoor patio in an apartment complex and i need to store all the chairs and tables in the winter outside

Answer
Lowes and Home Depot, WalMart and Big Lots all sell covers for assorted outdoor furniture. You can find vinyl covered cable at the home improvement centers. (You will need the vinyl covering so that you don't damage the furniture or the covers).

Beach theme wedding, any great ideas for table centerpieces?

SavvyGrl

Answer
I am having a tropical themed wedding in June. I am laying organza squares on top of the round white table linens and then putting down ti leaves with a glass centerpiece bowl and floating orchid blooms (much cheaper then orchid plants) I go them from here http://www.hawaii-tropical-flowers.com/fresh_hawaiian_lei/loose_orchid_flowers.html with a couple candles on either side.

How do I save money on a beach theme wedding reception?

sboyd_hfcc

My fiancé and I are going to Hawaii for are wedding ceremony. There will be 8 guest. We want to have are reception in Michigan. Im in love with elegance with a touch of Hawaii (without being cheesy) to give our guest a filling of actually being there.

Answer
White or pastel table linens, simple flower arrangements, because tropical flowers are not cheap.
You can buy bags of shells online...just Google "wedding shells" and you'll be surprised how many stores there are. Good for table decor.
A simple cake with tropical flowers, and "luau-ish" food and you're all set.
The leis are a nice idea too. You can do Hawaiian without doing cheesy Hawaiian.

Lake Marble Falls with waterfront hotel and restaurants.

The town of Marble Falls is located on Lake Marble Falls, is only 5 minutes from Lake LBJ. Marble Falls is only about 45 miles from Austin. Many residents work in Austin and commute to work from Marble Falls. San Antonio is only 85 miles to the south for additional shopping and sight seeing. It is a pleasant, scenic drive straight down Highway 281.

Before the dam was built to form Lake Marble Falls on the Colorado River, there were falls of marble giving the name Marble Falls to the city. The falls are now under water and only visible on those rare occasions when LCRA lowers the lake for repairs.

A fast growing town of 5,000, over 10,000 population in a 7 mile radius, Marble Falls is going through a period of prosperity and growth. Because of the growth, there are not as many homes available for sale or rent in town right now. Marble Falls is in a stage of development now that offers some of the best of the big city life without the disadvantages of the fast pace and traffic problems of Austin or San Antonio. It is an interesting mixture of a rural lifestyle with big city conveniences only 45 minutes away.
