Is it a good idea to open a Beer Hall?

garden benches tables on Outdoor School Furniture, Tables, Outdoor Benches, Bleachers

RCrumb

I want to find some way to do it cheap and simple, so I thought just a big hall selling beer might work. Anything to keep initial costs down, no frills, no dark lighting, no signs, just a normal Beer hall and Beer garden... And no fancy names either, just "Beer Hall"
Any suggestions?
No, seriously, we can launch it as a very simple endeavor , and then add the frills later as we go.
But whatever frills you think people like, p-lease let me know if you can.

Answer
I think this is a fine idea. Germany supports thousands of beer halls. I'd start small, maybe 500 max occupancy. Just have tables and benches so that strangers are forced to sit next to one another.

Encourage singing and dancing on the benches, like Oktoberfest.

Have live and prerecorded music, including some "Ein Prosit" type tunes that periodically make people clink neighbors glasses and take a swallow.

Sounds like fun to me.

Any suggestions for a unique eagle project?

hotstreek7

I'm looking for an eagle project, and i want it to be away from the usual. I don't want it to be planting a flower garden, painting a wall, building a fence, etc. Does anybody have any ideas that are unique? Please share your experiences of eagle projects you've participated in or have seen or observed. Thank you.

I need step by step directions on how to make a bench cushion for my kitchen table.?

bench table kitchen on KITCHEN WORK BENCHES - KITCHEN DESIGN PHOTOS
bench table kitchen image
Q. I bought an Ikea kitchen bench and I would like to make a cushion for it. I have a vague idea how to do it - and the supplies I'll need, but I think I should have some step by step instructions just in case.

Is it as simple as plywood, spray adhesive, foam, and fabric??

Answer
You seem to be on the right track. You did not say if the top if the bench is finished. I am assuming that it is not.

You can adhere the foam to the plywood, but it is not necessary as the fabric will hold the foam into place.

1. Place fabric face down on a clean surface.
2. Place a layer of polyester batting down on the fabric.
3. Place foam cushion top of the batting.
4. Place the plywood over the foam.
5. Smooth the batting over the foam and plywood. Staple one side of the batting, Mitre the corners of the foam so that it is not bulky. (You may need to trim some of the batting. Staple the opposite side, then finish the remaining sides.
6. I like to sew the corners of the fabric for a finished edge, but you can carefully fold the corners of the fabric, (like a gift) and staple the fabric in the same manner as the batting.

You can then screw the bench to the bottom of the plywood.

YOU ARE DONE!

If the cushion in loose, the easiest way to do this is to sew the fabric on three sides and 1/3 of the way on each end of the remaining side. (Making a pillow case type cover.) Then turn the cover inside out. Take each corner and form a triangle from the flattened sides of the corners. Sew a seam on each corner the depth of the cushion. This gives a nice finished look. Turn inside - out. Then stuff cover with pillow and then hand sew the remaining portion of the seam.

How on earth do I cut Hardibacker?

babybunny7

I am woking on installing a tile countertop in my kitchen. I have the plywood base down and it's level but I need to put hardibacker on top of it and I don't know how to cut it. I've heard of the score and snap method, but I am unsure how to do this. Do you score both sides? I tried scoring one side and snapping it but it didn't snap. I had to hit it with a hammer just to get it to bust off in smallish pieces.
Please HELP!

Answer
Cutter blade is too thin and will stuck inside the board.
There is a special cutter for cutting hardibacker, around $10. Homedepot or Lowes should have it.
Cut one side, and snap it over a straight edge, like work bench or table, or use some 2 X 4.
Ask the floor guy at the store.

Taking children to the beach for the first time?

beach table in a bag image

mommy of t

My husband and I are taking our 1 yr old twins to the beach next month. Any tips/advice that may make things go smoothly or suggestions on things to take with us (besides the obvious clothes, sunscreen etc.)??

Answer
If there is a lot of surf at your beach, you might show them videos of beaches first and talk happily about it, to make it less likely that they will fear the waves. At that age it might not be a concern though. I guess they are too little to really use sand shovels, but it couldn't hurt to bring them - they might enjoy picking up sand and chucking it into the water.

Number one skill I acquired from taking littlies to the beach is, fear not sand and seawater! Unclench about it getting all over everything, sand sticking in little crotches and whatnot, and don't let the urge to keep it under control it ruin your day. Just let it stick, let it get on the beach blanket, whatever. You don't end up with all that much sand in your stuff. Don't sweat about the sunscreen too much either - it washes off, sand sticks in it - but do bring a shade umbrella and be sensible. Sun hats with chin straps are good, but try them on first to see if the kids are just going to rip them off. A good thing to have if you eat at the beach is a wash bottle for hands, to get sand off, and maybe some kind of table to keep any food up off foot level. Don't forget a waterproof bag for wet clothing and towels.

What songs should I put on my music playlist for a vacation trip to Hawaii?

What type of wood for outdoor furniture?

outdoor benches tables on Build Deck Benches That Look Great! See all the ways you enhance your ...
outdoor benches tables image

Mightie Mo

I want to build a simple outdoor picnic table and use pine (mostly 2x4) for construction because it is inexpensive. I plan to set it on my backyard lawn, so it will be exposed to moisture and sunlight. Question is, if I stain & protect it, will it last just as long as other higher quality woods like redwood and cedar? Thanks.

Answer
The pine, properly stained, sealed, and protected, should last a good long while. Especially important is to guard the footings of the table and/or benches; wherever it comes in contact with the ground, lingering moisture will tend to invade the wood. Likewise, give the table a very slight slant and enough gaps to drain quickly and easily, to avoid any standing water.
However, with equal treatments on various types of wood, pine is still not the equal of redwood or cedar. Cedar, for example, possesses a natural chemical resistance to insects and rot that makes it last considerably longer.
Given how expensive the higher-quality woods are, it might be worthwhile to make a pine table and replace it after a few years, once it starts to decay.

What's a durable finish for outdoor funiture.?

MagPookie

The varnish on my wood outdoor patio table wore off. Last summer I sanded for hours and reapplied 5 COATS of polyurethane. This spring it all wore off in the rain storms. I live in S. Cal. so it's not like we have an enormous amount of rain.

Now I have to sand and recoat again. What should I use? What brand?

Answer
Wow, I live in SoCal, too, and had a disappointing experience with McCloskeys Man O War Spar Marine Varnish. I used it on a bench in my backyard and put 3 heavy coats. Within a year, it had yellowed terribly and started flaking off. I had to sand it down and I recoated it with that new Stain/Paint by Olympic. I didn't even seal it and I used the black. It hasn't faded, peeled or chipped at all. It is in blazing sun all day, gets hit by the automatic sprinklers and the weed wacher but still looks as nice as it did the day I painted it.

Do you have advice for what to bring on a camping trip?

Breandan

A few men are going on a camping trip. We're planning on going to Harriman State Park in New York near New York City.
Besides the obvious: tent, sleeping bag, cooler, bug spray, food, beer; what do you recommend we bring?

Answer
Essentials
The first items on my list are what I call "Essentials." It's possible I might not need one of these items on a particular trip, but if I do (and chances are, I will), I'll have it. These are important things every camper will probably need sooner or later, including:

â¢Cash, credit cards, checks
â¢Required licenses and permits (for camping, hunting, fishing, etc.)
â¢Waterproof matches and butane lighter
â¢Multi-tool and/or Swiss army knife
â¢Toilet paper
â¢Flashlight, spare batteries and bulb
â¢Maps and compass or GPS
â¢Rain gear
â¢Extra clothing
â¢Insect repellent
Clothing

â¢Pants, shorts
â¢Shirts
â¢Underclothes
â¢Shoes/boots
â¢Socks
â¢Belt
â¢Jacket, coat
â¢Hat, cap, toboggan
â¢Gloves
â¢Swimwear
â¢Nightwear

Toiletries

â¢Toothbrush, paste
â¢Soap, shampoo
â¢Mirror
â¢Comb, brush
â¢Deodorant
â¢Washcloth, towels
Miscellaneous

â¢Extra prescription glasses/contacts
â¢Prescription medicines
â¢Watch, alarm clock
â¢Sunglasses
â¢Sunscreen, lip balm
Camping Gear

If you're staying in a trailer or RV, you may not need to worry about many of the items listed below. But in this article, we'll assume you're going to be tent camping. That being the case, some items you may want to bring include:

â¢Tent, tent fly, poles, stakes and ropes (set up the tent before leaving to be sure everything is there and you know how to put it up)
â¢Hammer or hatchet (for driving tent stakes; keep it in the tent bag)
â¢Ground cloth (to go under the tent and keep it clean and dry)
â¢Sleeping bags
â¢Ground pads, mattresses and/or cots
â¢Pillows
â¢Tarp (has many uses)
â¢Lantern(s) (including fuel, mantles, funnel, batteries as necessary)
â¢Folding chairs, stools, tables
â¢Extension cords (for camps with electric hookups)
â¢Ice chest
â¢Beverage/water jugs
â¢Camping shower
â¢Ax, hatchet and/or shovel
â¢Broom
Food

Plan your meals before leaving home, and make a list of all food items you'll need using your menus as a guide. Some campers like to have elaborate outdoor meals, while others prefer not to cook at all. Either way, here's a list to help you remember some of what you might need:

â¢Meats (hamburger, hot dogs, steaks, bacon, sausage, chicken, etc.)
â¢Dairy products (milk, cheese, etc.)
â¢Eggs
â¢Bread, buns, biscuits, crackers
â¢Vegetables (potatoes, beans, corn, tomatoes, onions, peppers, mushrooms, etc.)
â¢Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, salad dressings, syrup, BBQ sauce, etc.)
â¢Drinks (coffee, tea, sodas, Kool-aid, juice, etc.)
â¢Staples (flour, corn meal, sugar, salt, pepper, herbs, spices, butter, cooking oil, etc.)
â¢Snack foods, dessert ingredients

Plan your meals before leaving home, and make a list of all food items you'll need using your menus as a guide.

Cooking, Food Service and Cleanup

The items you'll need for preparing meals, serving them and cleaning up will once again vary greatly according to your own preferences. Here are some to consider for your list:

â¢Camp stove, fuel
â¢Charcoal, lighter fluid
â¢Firewood
â¢Grill, cooking grate
â¢Reflector oven
â¢Skillet, pots and pans
â¢Carving/cutting knives
â¢Spatula, tongs, serving fork and spoon
â¢Can opener
â¢Measuring cups and spoons
â¢Aluminum foil
â¢Plates, cups, bowls
â¢Flatware (forks, spoons, knives)
â¢Scouring pads, detergent
â¢Zip-loc bags
â¢Garbage bags
â¢Paper towels, dish towels
â¢Oven mitt, pot holder
Emergency Gear

"Plan for the worse and hope for the best." That old saying has merit when you're camping. Always be prepared just in case something unexpected happens by having on hand a tool kit that includes a hammer, screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches; a repair kit that contains such things as duct tape, wire, nylon twine, superglue and rope; and a first aid kit that includes all or some of the following basic items:

â¢Band-Aids
â¢Gauze pads
â¢Adhesive tape
â¢Aspirin
â¢Tweezers
â¢Needle
â¢Moleskin
â¢Single-edge razor blade
â¢Antacid
â¢Ace bandage
â¢Diarrhea medication
â¢Cold medication
â¢Laxative
â¢Bandages
â¢Sunburn relief
â¢Thermometer
â¢Sting kill swabs
â¢Eye drops
â¢Scissors
â¢Cortisone (anti-itch) cream
â¢Antibiotic cream
â¢Antihistamine such as Benad

What cute romantic things can i do with my girlfriend at Disneyland?

outdoor tables and chairs for restaurants image

hahaha

This Tuesday I am going to Disneyland with my girlfriend and I am wondering what are some cute romantic things I can do with her or for her. What are some things that i can do to sweep her off her feet? Lol I'm kinda new to the dating things but i really love her and I want to make this day special for her :)

Answer
Go to the emporium on mains street, the princess shop by the castle, or world of disney in downtown disney and get her one of those little metal tiaras. buy her one of those and tell her she's your princess. watch the fireworks, hold her hand, etc. while you're watching (very romantic, especially at the very end, when the music comes on). Late at night when the park is closing and everyone is leaving, get on the train and take it all the way around the park. late at night you can usually find an empty (or nearly empty) car in the train, and you can snuggle up together on the train, going all the way around disneyland. with all the lights on at night and very few people there, disneyland is beautiful. this would be very romantic. As you're walking down mainstreet, to the right of the castle there's Snow White's wishing well. this is a very romantic spot. (lots of people pop the question here) take her there, tell her to make a wish, kiss her, take pictures, whatever you want but it's a very romantic spot. During the day, take her on the Mark Twain River Boat or the Columbia ship, around the rivers of america. that is very romantic. Also, during the day when it gets hot and/or crowded, go to critter country, there's a big 2-story outdoor restaurant in the shade with lots of tables and chairs, nobody is ever there, it's nice and cool in the shade and very peaceful and quiet. It's right on the river in a beautiful spot, and it's a great place to sit and rest and have a nice conversation with your girlfriend. Another romantic thing is take her on all the adorable little Fantasyland rides like Snow White, Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, and Mr. Toad. Great for snuggling up together, holding hands, she'll put her head on your shoulder, and the rides are very cute. If your girlfriend likes the really cute Disney stuff and the princesses and all that, take her on the Storybook Canal boats. It's beautiful and cute and she'll love it. At California Adventure: Soarin' Over California is amazing, take her on that!! For something a little more up-beat and fun, go on the Grizzly River Run. You'll get wet, but you and your girlfriend will laugh a lot and have a lot of fun. Tip: Take your jacket off and put it in a backpack or sit on it or something so it doesn't get wet. Then, after the ride when your girlfriend is cold and wet, give her your jacket to keep her warm. very sweet :) See the Aladdin show, in Hollywood Pictures Backlot. it's like a Broadway show, and it's really really good. i'm not sure if it's open now or not, but if it is, you'll also want to find out in advance what times the shows are.

Romantic dining at Disneyland, California Adventure and Downtown Disney:

-Carnation Cafe on Main Street is a very cute, very good breakfast place. It's outside, under umbrellas.
-Blue Bayou in New Orleans Square (VERY romantic!!) also very expensive. make reservations wayy ahead of time.
-There's a great ice cream place on Main Street, called Gibson Girl. When it gets hot during the day, or maybe late at night, buy her ice cream and walk with her down mainstreet holding hands.
-In California Adventure, there's a nice Italian restaurant called the Trattoria. Also at the Trattoria, you can go wine tasting (if you're over 21 of course)
-Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney (expensive, but great food!)

And the very best sweep-her-off-her-feet romantic place in all of Disneyland:
Take her inside the Grand Californian Hotel (you can get there through Downtown Disney). Inside the Lobby, there is a gigantic fireplace with a sitting area inside it. It has the perfect mood lighting, it's peaceful and beautiful and if you look up at the ceiling inside the fireplace there are little tiny lights that kinda look like stars. Take her there, sit by the fireplace and snuggle up together, sip coffee, whatever you want to do, but it's a very romantic spot. If there's nobody else around, it would be a great spot for kissing.

Disneyland is an amazing, perfect place for dating. Very cute, romantic and fun. I'm sure that you have already swept her off her feet just by taking her to Disneyland. She is a lucky girl! Have fun!!

P.S: There are Disney cast member photographers all around Disneyland, especially at places like the castle. They'll ask you (or you could ask them) if you want your picture taken. Have your picture taken with you and your girlfriend in front of the castle. Then later you can buy the picture, maybe have it framed, and give it to your girlfriend as a souvenir. That would be very sweet :)

Has anyone been to Boomtown Casino in Bossier City LA?

jj234

I was wondering what the amenities are, their website is very vague. My wife and I have reservations in June for a Deluxe King Suite (with a jacuzzi) and I had a few questions of the people that have been there:

1. Does the hotel have a pool?
2. How was the casino? Is it nice? Big?
3. How are the restaurants in the casino?

Thanks ahead of time!

1) The property just opened a new pool and fitness center this spring. The pool is an outdoor pool with an attached hot tub. The deck has plenty of tables, chairs, and loungers, and is nicely landscaped with new palm trees.

2) The casino is a three-level boat with a full array of slots and table games. The slot machines are the newest in the market, and the dealers were recently voted the best dealers by Casino Player magazine.

3) There are enough restaurants to satisfy any taste: 1800 Prime offers the best steaks in the market. The Cattleman's Buffet has every food offering you would expect from a large buffet. The Sundance Cantina offers great Mexican Food (Check out the Boomarita!) Finally, if you need something quick, Boomer's Cafe offers the ability to get a quick bite.

Hope this helps!

What kinds of food should I bring camping with me?

SuFi ChIcK

going camping for the first time alone with my bf and this is our first time going with out our parents or family.

Answer
Assuming TENT CAMPING! If you are taking a Trailer/RV you can take just about anything you desire!

Short trip car> Bread, Peanut butter and jelly, canned stew and vegetables, tea/instant coffee, at least 2 gallons of drinking water, grate/grill for cooking over fire, Kitchen matches with the striker from the box in a plastic bag to protect from moisture, Instant potatoes, box Macaroni & Cheese, Canned Baked Beans. Instant Oatmeal in whatever flavors you desire. Salt and pepper in sealed plastic containers, Sugar and /or any other seasonings likewise in sealed containers. A coffee pot, for heating water for coffee or tea. Anything else you like, which does not absolutely require refrigeration. Ice chest and camp stove are optional but highly recommended! Cold Soda or beer is definitely a plus!

Longer trip car> Ice chest and camp stove become mandatory! But that also allows more flexibility in meal plans, with ice chest and stove you can take eggs, butter and milk to prepare a more traditional breakfast including if you desire Bacon! You can also take steak and other meats to grill ( do not forget to take suitable seasonings!) and if space permits a large cast griddle or fry pan you can take pancake mix (requires egg and milk, and do not forget the spatula!) Take along 2, 10 quart metal buckets to be your wash basins and I recommend Dawn brand dish soap and Scotch Bright Pads to clean up those greasy pots and pans. At least 2 flat hot pads and an oven glove. Durable plastic plates and glasses, and plastic insulated mugs and a set of flatware including a sharp (steak) knife for each person and serving spoons and forks.

Other important items: You will need a multi-purpose pocket knife ( Swiss Army style - not necessarily brand - and make sure it is SHARP and well lubricated ) Trash Bags. A 6 way screwdriver, a small hatchet with sheath, Take lots of 5/32" nylon line and a couple of pocket lighters when you cut a length of the line seal the end with the lighter so it will not fray. A pack of thumb size candles for fire starting. Pocket Flashlights.

A table lantern - Colman White Gas AKA "Camp Fuel" lantern or battery - Coleman Lanterns last forever and produce vast amounts of bright white light, but they require a steady supply of fuel, Mantels and the occasional replacement Generator and Globe, if you choose the Coleman Lantern be sure to practice lighting it several times during daylight in an outdoor location well away from anything flammable and NEVER EVER EVEN THINK ABOUT LIGHTING IT INSIDE OF YOUR TENT OR ANY OTHER STRUCTURE!!!!!)

Take about twice as many towels as you might want at first thought, 1 wash cloth per person plus 1 dish cloth are sufficient. Pack large zip-lock bags to carry wet clothing / swimwear in.
Collapsible Chairs and camp stools are great but don't break the bank to buy them for your first trip.

Take Clothing suitable for Winter and Rainy Conditions in the area where you will be camping! (Ponchos! And heavy coats! ) Nothing worse than getting frozen stiff because the weatherman blew it! This includes a Knit Cap which covers your ears if the temperature could possibly fall below 50 Degrees F!

Take good warm sleeping bags (rated ZERO Degrees F ) which can be joined together and AIR MATTRESSES! One for each person and a SPARE! Do not even think about camping without air mattresses!

Please plan on purchasing your firewood where you camp to avoid moving around BAD Insects! Take newspaper in a plastic bag for fire starting too.

If Space and Funds permit a set of poles and a camp Fly (10'X10' Tarp) are very desirable to keep the table area dry in the event of rain ( minimum 6 poles and a dozen 14' long lines, stakes, S-Hooks and O-rings - the O-ring prevents sharp edges on the Stake from damaging the line and the S-Hook makes it real easy to attach to the tarp eyes.

Proper equipment and preparation make all the difference between comfortably riding out the storm when camping and being cold wet and miserable when the unexpected .

Have Fun!

I have an old plastic table that I want to make into an outdoor table?

outdoor tables metal on GAP Interiors - Ornate metal garden furniture on terrace - Picture ...
outdoor tables metal image

gamblor

It is one of those long tables that you might see set up at fundraisers or something . you can fold up the legs so you can transport them. the legs are metal and top plastic. it probably fits about 4 on each side and one on each end. can it be an outdoor table if I paint it and stuff or will it get ruined. what would i do to make it survive outside.

Answer
In a dry climate it might outlast you. Humid climates will eat it away (the metal of course).

What would you do with it anyway?

I say go ahead and use it outside.

Maybe a fresh coat of paint on the legs would help (they still might rust from the inside though). Keep the hinges and pivot points lubed with WD-40.

Regards!

can I apply tile to a metal table?

barbarasue

I have an old metal outdoor table that I want to break tiles and make a design with tile.

Answer
I'm sure you could, but not with traditional means. If you're setting directly to the metal, you'll use a construction adhesive (Liquid Nails) to set the tile and then use a colored silicone to grout. If you want or need to use traditional setting, there's some things you need to consider. Determine what thickness top there is on the table now. If it's a thick top that doesn't flex, screw a 1/4" piece of plywood to the top and set and grout from there. If it's thin and flexes a lot, make a 3/4" plywood top and go from there. Setting directly to metal is not advised as the grout or mortar mix would not adhere well to the metal. The grout will crack and you'll chip off your design.

What great places/ restaurants are there in San Diego area?

Jennifer

Me and some friends are planning on spending the weekend in San Diego and will be visiting the zoo and the Wild Animal Park. In the evenings, we want to have a good time and visit some nice places in San Diego. Does anyone know of some great restaurants and other places we can visit? Does anyone have any suggestions/ comments about the zoo and wild animal park also? Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Both the zoo and the Wild Animal Park are great.

I'd recommend driving to the top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a panoramic view of the coastline and the city skyline.

Georges Outdoor Terrace Bistro in La Jolla has the best view. Make reservations so that you are at a good table and time it so you are dining during the sunset. It's truly spectacular.

Also...have a bonfire on the beach. Roast marshmallows.

How do I seperate my poppy seeds from my mixture of beach sand, iron, table salt and the seeds?

beach table for sand on Beach Wedding Centerpieces: Ideas & Inspirations | CherryMarry
beach table for sand image

Sean F

I have most of it figured out.

Iron-Through magnetization
Table Salt-Through dissolving and evaporating in water.
Poppy Seeds-The plan was that they would all just float to the top and I could scoop them out, and they do float but they fall back down if you touch them.
And the plan with the beach sand is that it would just be left over.

The mixture is of unknown amounts of each substance in a test tube.

So any ideas on the poppy seeds?

Answer
If the objective was to find out the weight of each unknown amount, then you would have to weigh it before and after you got it wet to dissolve the water to find the loss in weight from having it washed away, then you would have to weight it after it dried again to find out how much weight in salt disappeared. If you had to "separate" your salt, then you would have to collect the rinse water and dry that as well.

If I had to try to float the seeds, and they were sinking in pure water, I would try to float them by using saturated salt water instead of pure water because the saturated salt water is denser.

The first thing I would do to try to separate the poppy seeds would be to shake the dry mixture side to side, the larger poppy seeds would migrate to the top of the mixture because they should be slightly larger and lighter than the sand particles. If they are much larger than the sand, then I would pass them through a screen to filter out the poppy seeds.

Using a magnet for the iron is a good idea.

How can i make my bedroom a beach theme and a japanese?

Michelle

I am redoing my bedroom. The beach and japanese things are my 2 favorite things in the world. How can i blend the 2 themes to where the room will look great? Im suck. Thanks for any suggestions Also, i'm redoing the flooring in the room. Any suggestions?

Answer
I'd go with something Polynesian which incorporates a tropical theme and has an Asian flair. Be careful about overdoing things so it doesn't end up looking kitschy. You know, tiki lights, totems, grass skirting, coconuts, etc. Unless that's your style.

When I think of Polynesian, I think about bamboo flooring, or parquetry--a mid-grade color, not too light, not too dark. You could do an accent wall in fabric or textured paneling (like novawall paneling-which helps lessen noise and looks sophisticated--I'm thinking a dark, wet sand color), or install a "living wall" panel of plants (for a nice verdant green), with a clerestory strip of low level lighting--or small pot lights to create mood. Without knowing the dimensions of your room, or your tastes, I'm doing a lot of guessing, so bear with me.

I'd put in some nice amber lighting to bounce the color around--wall sconces, task lighting, up-lights in the corners and a central light fixture hanging from the ceiling (could incorporate a ceiling fan here...). Mix neutral colors with stark white elements, vases for example and shiny elements of silver or brass. You might decide to have a few art pieces. I can picture a large fish bowl (modern style), filled with cowry shells as part of a water feature. Beach colors might include tequila orange, red pomegranate, deep turquoise or aqua, sunset yellows, midnight blues, that sort of thing. A trick I used in my office was to take different color bamboo poles (six ft. tall) from light tan, to mahogany red, to dark brown and finally black and put them into an old brass coal scuttle that's about two feet tall. I also varied their sizes, from large poles to reeds and made a sort of "fan tree" out of them.

You could also try a Bombay approach. Here the wood tones would be deeper. The accent wall might incorporate wide panel shutters back-lit by mood lighting, or a wide panel shutter room divider. Same kind of lighting elements. Thomasville has a Hemingway Collection which has a lot of these elements. In my mind I see old steamer trunks with brass fixtures and knobs, worn leather desk blotters, campaign table, faux ivory elements (like elephants, etc.), large fans, a panama style hat hanging from a clothes tree. Colors might include royal blues, teal greens, mustard yellows, ebony etc. Fabrics might include muslin, cotton, white satin.

Floor would be darker wood. Bedding could be stark white linens, maybe incorporate mosquito netting in one corner that drapes to the floor, back-lit for effect, and tied with a decorative tie back and tassel. Side table has a glass carafe on a silver tray. I always think mixing muted tones with shiny elements looks more sophisticated and interesting to the eye.

Again, include a water element or feature.

Another great source for ideas is Restoration Hardware.

How much memory do I need to film a Time-lapse road trip?

beach table number cards on Table Numbers Business Cards, 3,000+ Business Card Templates
beach table number cards image

David

I want to buy a Samsung SMX-F40 and film my road trip from Portland,OR to Virginia Beach...but I have no clue what size SD card I need. There are different intervals to set the camera to take a picture, so I was thinking of setting it at taking a picture every 15 sec. I did the math and its gonna take like 34,000 pictures!!! is that right?? If so I need to record directly to an External Hard Drive, right?

Answer
1 still per 15 seconds =
4 stills per minute =
40 stills per 10 minutes =
240 stills per hour...

If your end-product video is NTSC standard 29.97 frames per second (everyone refers to this as 30 frames per second) 240 stills divided by 30 frames (or stills) per second gets us to 8 seconds of video.

But lets continue the path...
If you are at 34,000 pictures divided by 240 stills per hour, then you are estimating your trip (while the camera is running) to take about 142 hours. That does not seem right to me.

I am going to round numbers just to make the math easier and I assume you are talking only "windshield time"... According to Yahoo! maps, the distance from Portland, OR to Virginia Beach, VA is about 3,000 miles and the travel time shows a little under 44 hours.

Do the math again...
1 still per 15 seconds =
4 stills per minute =
40 stills per 10 minutes =
240 stills per hour =
10,560 stills per 44 hours.

10,560 stills divided by 30 frames per second video = 352 seconds then divide that by 60 seconds per minute to get us to just a little under 6 minutes for the end-result video.

10,000+ images is still a large number, but all you need to do is have couple of SDHC cards. When a card fills, take it out, put in a blank, put the full card in a computer to copy the pics to the computer's hard drive, wait for the card in the camera to fill. Repeat ths swap process.

PRATICE this (you don't need to fill a card) BEFORE THE TRIP to understand if you need to reset anything or restart the interval capture process, etc... when the memory card is removed.

Since the SMX-40 can use SDHC cards, if you get a 32 gig or 64 gig card, it could be possible to record the stills for an entire "leg" (like until the next gas stop) where the photos can be transferred to a laptop during the gas-up time or even capture through out the day's drive and transfer to a computer would be at a rest stop or hotel... SInce these are stills, they will take WAY less room that video.

Read the camcorder's manual. There will be a table in there that shows how many pictures (or how much video) can be stored on a given amount of memory on the card.

You don't need an external drive directly connected to the camera (and there is none available that will do what you want) to store the stills in real-time.

Or if you can afford to get several large SDHC cards, even better. When one fills, pull it out and stick in a empty one. Lock the full card, mark it (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or A, B, C, D, E... etc...)... I did essentially the same thing but with a miniDV tape based camcorder recording HDV format video - and each hour (the miniDV tapes I use record up to 63 minutes of high definition video); I drove from San Diego to Northern California (8 hours, so 8 tapes or 64 hours real-time video) imported the video and using the "fast motion" feature of the video editor, the final product video was about 3 minutes.

Other things to consider: Does the camcorder have enough battery time to do what you want or will you be using a power inverter plugged into the vehicle's power?

And it just occurred to me that you might be bicycling across the country which is why the 142 hours... so the camcorder battery time becomes more of an issue (since there is no "power plug" unless you have some sort of battery pack, solar or generator connection... Then there is the added item of the "environment" and storms and the camera getting wet or too hot (check the manual for the "Operating Temperature Range")... and mounting the camera to the "vehicle"... among other considerations.

What all is planned when getting married?

DylanRache

I know there's the dress, the cake, food served, guests and such. but can someone make a list of everything that has to be planned out for me?

Answer
start with the budget. decide about how much you have to spend, ask parents how much they are going to give etc.

then it goes like this:

1. make your intitial guest list. at least get an approximate number of guests.

2.look for a venue...this is the location for the ceremony and the reception. it can be a park, a garden, a museum, art gallery, bed and breakfast, church, chapel, community center, restaurant, banquet hall, beach or backyard.

3. decide on food and drink...this can be provided by the venue, catered by a caterer of your choice, done by friends and family, or by yourself.

4. wedding officiant----this can be a minister, justice of the peace, judge, or anyone who is legally able to perform weddings in your state which sometimes can include a friend or family member who gets a one day license or an online ordination for 25 dollars.

5. photographer---whether professional or a friend or a student from a local photography school

6. dj or music source like ipod or your own dvds

7. flowers---best deals are to do them yourself, but can be a florist and include bouquets, corsages, boutionneres, centerpieces and pew decorations

8. invitations----diy or custom ordered

9. wedding cake

10. wedding dress and groom's tux or suit

11. bridal party attendants dresses ---you choose them, they pay for them

12. groomsmen's suites or tuxes---same deal

13. place cards for tables

14. favors for the guests

15. bridal guest book

16. gifts for the attendants from the bride and groom

17. gifts and/or thank you cards for parents of bride and groom from the bride and groom

18. thank you card which you will need to send to everyone who attended you wedding whether they give you a gift or not. be sure to keep everyone's names and addresses and make note if they gift you.

We were hoping to spend time outdoors riding bicycles, and just walking everywhere. We want to go in the middle of November.

Answer
Smathers Beach is the longest, and one of the best-known beaches in Key West, it is located just west of the airport. Smathers Beach is named for George A. Smathers a former senator who served Florida for eighteen years in Congress. Everything you need to have a great day of family fun in the sun is right at hand; it has plenty of parking, restrooms, concession stands, chair rentals and picnic tables, vending trucks parked along the perimeter offer snacks and beverages.

Is there any safe way to open aerosol cans?

table camping vintage on Winter's Moon Vintage Teak Camping / Garden Table
table camping vintage image

themysticm

I found this really neat vintage aerosol can of suede polish-stuff in my garage, I don't want to throw it out and, if possible, I'd like to repurpose it, but is there any safe way of opening it any leave it mostly intact?
Mmkay, deal is, I don't actually want the stuff inside, I'm only really interested in the can and he top part with the nozzle. I just need to open it while keeping the can (and myself) intact. Like, separate the top part from the can part.

Answer
Lets see if I understand what you have. Is there no more pressure in the can? Or is the nozzle clogged up so you can't get anything out of it and can not tell about the pressure?
I'd say there is no safe way to open a can like that, they are not supposed to be opened. The insurance would not want to cover any damage or injury incurred from trying such a thing. None the less, I do it all the time. I like to get the marbles out of paint cans. Now then. You want to be able to preserve the can in tact as much as possible? Like, you want to dispense the liquid out of the can without putting it in another container with a tight cap? Remember there is a possibility that there is still some pressure in the can, the worst job I got on my face was spray adhesive! I had my nostrils and eyelids glued shut, not good. I used vegi oil on my face to cut the stickiness. Then soapy water. Well, you want to be careful, I use a can opener that is part of the collection of blades on my camp knife. They used to be called Camp King. That opener is the best for this kind of job. These cans are thicker metal than vegi cans so beware, you could break off the tip of your opener. Just make sure the pressure applied is even and straight down and with no sideways pressure. When you poke the tip of the opener into the edge of the can, you want to go in only a slight distance, like and eight of an inch and slowly bring the tip back out to relieve the potential pressure very slowly. You could even cover the hands with a rag to slow down any potential spray, but then you would have a hard time seeing what you are doing. The liquid would be staying near the bottom of the can and the gas would be at the top, thus the gas would come out first and maybe only. Be sure the can is vertical, or upright, with it's bottom held tightly against the table top or bench, porch rail or whatever. If you intend to pour the contents into another container you will want to open the hole a bit more, like a half inch and then turn the can 90 degrees and put the tip of the opener into the same slot and press down till it makes the slot open about one eight inch wide or so. then make a slit on the other side of the can, straight across from the first opening so as to let the air in as the contents comes out while you are tipping the can to pour.
Be sure you have plenty of ventilation and a partner to see that you are OK, to call for help if needed.

Just in case you don't have an opener like I use, you can use a small screw driver. Be sure that it has a tough enough handle to handle a blow from a hammer and be sure that the can is held tightly so it doesn't tip over while giving the blow. A nail could be used too, but be careful, the can tends to want to tip over when doing it that way. Be sure to remove the screw driver or nail slowly so as to relieve the potential pressure slowly.
Blessings on you and do be safe!

What all I need for a small inexpensive wedding and reception?

Jacquie

My fiance is going into the Army and he will be going to boot camp this summer. His recruiter suggested that because we have a daughter due in two weeks and because of possible housing after boot camp that we get married before he goes to boot camp. We are a little tight on money, so I wondered what we need for a small, inexpensive, but nice wedding?

Answer
It depends on what kind of wedding you want. If you are thinking traditional, you will need the following.
1) A license.
Typically $20-$50 depending on where you live. Ask your local courthouse staff for info.
2) An officiant and location to be married.
If you or a family member are a member of a church, typically they will donate both an officiant and the church building, but you are expected to give some type of donation after the wedding. Other groups may also donate the space, but typically not an officiant, which will run about $300 if you have to pay for one.
3) A location for the reception.
Check if the church has a separate room that you can use or a detached space that you could use for free. Alternatively, some open-concept churches can have tables set up in the hall, you get married while people are sitting at their tables. Or, you could have the reception in someone's back yard. Keep in mind that a back-yard event will require tables and chairs that would typically be provided by an indoor location, but that an outside location is also typically much easier to decorate nicely.
4) Dress clothes.
You will need a dress. A traditional dress will run you $100 on ebay, or you may be able to find one at Goodwill or a similar store. Remember that alterations cost extra unless you know someone who would donate the time. Shoes and veil are up to you. He could wear his military formals if he has them (free) or a nice suit. If you want people to stand up with you, ask them to wear something from their closet that would coordinate; think black dresses for women and khakis with black button-up for men. If you want something more formal, go for tuxes, but keep in mind that it will run an extra $150 for a tux.
5) Flowers.
If you get married closer into spring-summer, you can cut bouquets from your flower beds or from a relative/close neighbor. Hydrangeas are particularly beautiful and bountiful during their season. Alternatively, you can make your own real flower bouquet from your local florist/flower seller (ex Walmart) for $25-$40. Some people will suggest fake flowers, but they are actually more expensive in the long run unless you are super-crafty and make your own paper flowers.
6) Cake and other food/drink
Hunt out your family members, friends, etc for anyone they may know who likes to make cakes. A cake from the bakery will run $800+; a friend of a friend will typically do a cake for $250-$300, and if the person is closer, they may be willing to do it as your wedding gift.
As for the rest of the food/drink, keep in mind that, as long as some type of beverage is available, how far you go with food/drink is completely voluntary, and you don't have to do anything at all. On the cheap, you can do chips and dips, barbeque, mini sandwiches or have a potluck meal. The nice part of the wedding isn't based on what food you eat, but how you present it. i.e. chips in nice glass bowls (easy to borrow) instead of straight out of the bag. Keep in mind that you will also need plastic plates, cups, and silverware; think clear or something that matches your theme.
7) Decorations.

I'm planning to go to Lake George this summer (with a 2 yr old), and is looking for recommendations on places to stay. Clean, and comfortable. Doesn't need to be fancy. Also don't mind to be far (away from bars, night clubs and such, since we have a bay). Thanks!

Orange County wedding reception, casual, hawaiian style luau, any recommendations?

V.Ortiz

My mom is getting married in September and since it is a 2nd marriage for both, they want something very casual, more like a celebration or party, and as cheap as possible. Any ideas for perhaps a park or beach area that we could cater food, have some tables and chairs but they don't want sit down dinner, just a casual hawaiian luau stlye party, outdoors in the daytime, located in south orange county between San Clemente and Huntington beach. Or inland.

I know people recommend sea salt, but what's the difference. Is table salt bad for a new piercing?

Answer
Sea salt is a natural disinfectant. Use SEA salt, not table salt. I would assume table salt would do nothing. Why does it sting when you go in the water at the beach when you have a cut, because it is disinfecting. Why do your cuts heal faster, it speeds up the healing process. So if you want your belly to not get infected and heal faster, sea salts the way to go.
I got my belly peirced almost 3 years ago, sea salt all the way!

Are there any calm beaches near the north shore in the winter months?

Steve

Staying at Turtle Bay... I know the waves there will be big, wondering the closest beach thats good for swimming, with low waves. I will have a car so can drive a bit. Any suggestions?

Answer
Malaekahana State Park is sheltered by an outer reef so it is usually very calm. It has a beautiful beach (see the URL below) which has very few people. I was just there several days ago and it was great. Goat Island is about 200 feet offshore and has two small secluded beaches. The water is shallow enough to wade out to.

http://www.hawaiigaga.com/oahu/beaches/malaekahana-state-park.aspx

When you drive in to the parking area go all the way to the end then walk out of the end of the parking lot. There is a bathroom and a lot of picnic tables. Just beyond those is a long beach.

You can do a Google Images search for "Malaekahana" and get many more pictures.

Shark's Cove has a very sheltered area for snorkeling but the water is only about three feet deep. The open area of the cove gets large waves in the winter and can be dangerous.

Check with the concierge at Turtle Bay for more up-to-date information.

------------------------
January 23, 2010 UPDATE
To show you how variable the surf is in the winter, this morning the surf is down. Sunset Beach is 2 - 3 feet. Pipeline is 1 - 3 feet. The Volcom Pipeline Pro surf meet was cancelled. This means you can basically swim anyplace. Again, check with the concierge at the hotel for the latest conditions.

Also, when you get to the beach, look for the lifeguard towers. Ask what the conditions are and if there are any problems. Sometimes there can be currents that are not obvious.
