Who out there has an extremely extroverted autistic child?

Sarah C

An autistic person is typically withdrawn, and reclusive.
Please in truth and life experience, give me an example of a child diagnosed with autism who is very social and out going.
If you are familiar with the diagnose, and someone with it, who maintains the traits of isolism as I briefly described above- your response and information/opinion would be useful and greatly appreciated by myself, as well. I thank you for your time and input.

Answer
My daughter (9-1/2) might fit both sides of this. She's very social at school and out in the community. She tries to make conversation, and will greet sales clerks by name (reads their name tags). She will talk to other children, though they often don't respond because her social skills are pretty awkward, and sometimes her communication attempts don't make sense to those she's talking to. She has no problem walking up to a clerk to ask for directions, change, or information. She will walk up to the butcher counter and politely order "I need two pounds of ground beef to make taco meat please" She is very outgoing when she needs to be.

She has "friends" at school, but is not at all interested in having any come over for playdates. Friends belong at school, home is for her to be alone. We have a pool and I've tried encouraging inviting a friend but the response is always the same "I'll have her over for my birthday." I even tried "J is coming over next Wednesday" only to have her respond "No, that's ok, I don't want to play right now" We recently went camping and a 6 yr old girl befriended her. She was very persistant and kept trying to engage my daughter. My daughter played "throw rocks into the river" with her and "rescued" her when her tube when out too far. When my daughter had enough, she pretty much turned her back on the other girl "I do not want to play any more. I want to make a castle" and wouldn't engage any more. All attempts by the other girl were met with "I said I do not want to"

When my other children have friends over, she may play with them for a short while, especially if it's physical rough and tumble stuff. Then she retreats to her room. When she's at home, it's like her sanctuary. She's used up all her resources for dealing with other people and most of the time just wants to be alone to regroup. She prefers to eat alone, or at least at a different table, she also prefers watching tv by herself. Her current "best friend" is a paper super hero that she made. It's pretty cute actually, and the paper friend is much more predictable to her than real people are.

Where is the best place to camp in the Grand Canyon with young children?

Tara O

Where are planning a trip to camp at the Grand Canyon this summer. I have a 3 and 5 year old. I also would appricate details of what kind of things we can do with small children while at the Canyon. Thank you so much!

Answer
First off, you need to decide which rim you want to visit: the North Rim or the South Rim.

Most people go to the South Rim because it is easier to reach and is more developed with more overlooks, lodges, cafes and several good-sized towns (Flagstaff and Williams) nearby. The North Rim is harder to get to, only has one lodge and no large towns nearby. Because it is a thousand feet higher in elevation, it is cooler than the south rim and closed during the winter (mid-October to mid-May). During summer, I prefer the North Rim because it is cooler and less crowded, but young kids might find more things to see and do at the South Rim.

At either rim, you only have one real camping option for kids that young and that is the drive-in campgrounds (one at each rim). They are both very similar and pretty nice with a picnic table at each site and central bathroom facilities. They are also both a ways back from the rim, which make them a bit more peaceful, but also means you either have to drive to reach the rim and overlooks or go for a fairly long walk. You can reserve campsites online and should make reservations well in advance (see links below).

Beyond the car campgrounds mentioned above, there are also primitive backpacking campsites in the canyon itself (not recommmended for kids that young) as well as camping 'at large' in areas of the National Forest surrounding the park (the better locations being on the north rim to the west of the park - but these can be tough to reach).

As far as things to do for kids at the South Rim... kids at that age are probably not going to be entranced with scenic natural views for long or up for long hikes. There is a nice free shuttle that runs along the rim from the lodges out to Hermit Rest with stops along the way and the driver telling stories about the canyon - most kids and adults would probably enjoy it. They would probably like watching the burros and their attending cowboys at the corral near Bright Angel lodge. The large patio area along the rim behind Bright Angel lodge is also a good place to see squirrels, ravens and sometimes condors (not to mention ice cream from the nearby snackbar).

There are usually a number of ranger talks each day, many of them at the Shrine of Ages auditorium near Yavapai Lodge. The park also has a junior ranger program where children go to various exhibits and talks to get stamps and win a junior ranger award. The 3 year old would probably be a bit young even for that, but the 5 year might enjoy it.

There are fewer attractions for kids at the North Rim, but it has the benefit of having more open space and less roads and traffic. There are lots of places there for kids to run around in the trees and play with pinecones and sticks (my main memories of going there as a small kid). Along the road to the Cape Royale overlook there is a nice little hike called Cliff Springs trail that would be suitable for kids that age. It goes a mile into a small side canyon to a pretty little seep spring - it is fairly level and despite the name, you are not walking along any cliffs.

How can I clean my room and make my room ready for High School?

I am 13 years old, 14 in August.
I recently painted my room, purple and green, 4 months ago. I have already bought new bedding, but I cannot get it until my birthday, and until my room is clean. When I painted my room, I got a new desk which is now a mess. I really want some ideas on how to make my desk more usable for high school, by the way I plan on doing my homework in there. I am saving for a laptop, so that will go on my desk but I don't know what else I need to study, etc. Are there any inexpensive things I need to help me study at home?
The other part of the question is cleaning my room where do I start? What do I need to organize clutter what about my closet? It's a mess!!
Here some pictures of my room and please no rude comments about things that I have or what not.

Answer
There are a few tips that may help you out for study in highschool. When you start highschool, you will probably have a little more homework just because of the class type, and a larger stress on "free thinking" and research projects. Although you may be wanting to use your desk for study and homework, statistically if you do your homework outside of your living space, say at the kitchen table, or on the patio (nice days), or really any place that's relativly quiet, with less distraction. (I used to do homework at my dad's work bench in the garage.) As far as organization, it looks like you have a lot of nail polish and that sort of thing. Think about where you actually use those. If you use that sort of thing in your room, you might want to think about having it in storage, even if it's still easy access storage. Where you've lofted your bed, you can use things like rubbermade drawers under your bed. Drawers or shelves are good because you can sort things by type. A drawer or shelf for nail polish and that sort of thing, a drawer for school supplies (if you're dead set on using the desk for homework), a drawer for computer stuff if you're going to have one in your room, a drawer for magazines, etc. It looks like you have some of those drawers in the closet, and it would free up some space for hanging cloths if you move those under your bed. One thing I always find myself doing when I clean house, is find out that there's a lot of things I either don't need anymore, or, in the case of my closets, things I never use anymore that is just taking up space. You do have an oddly shaped accent rug, wich is fine and all, but if you're thinking about a rolling office style chair for working at your desk, you may run into problems with it rolling over the edge of the rug, either stopping the chair, or tearing up the edge of the rug. When re-organizing, just keep in mind to have the new layout make sense to you because if it's not "user friendly", you won't use it. One more tip for paperwork that you'll find increases exponentially in highschool, and college, is get in the habit of fileing things. A hanging file box can save you a lot of time when you're looking for that copy of a reference letter for a job application, or your reference list for college scholarship and summer camp applications. Good luck with you're cleaning/re-organization.

97-01 Honda crv. Great mileage, AWD, great space, cheap to maintain. Good for camping and whatnot. Auto or manual. Lots of little cool options. The rear storage tray comes out and becomes a table for when you camp/tailgate!

How long should I wait before painting wooden picnic tables?

camping table picnic on Light weight and compact folding bench, ideal for camping and picnics.
camping table picnic image

I work at a summer camp and we recently had unpainted picnic tables donated. My director wants to paint the tables to keep them from getting destroyed by our campers. How long should I wait before painting the tables? And what would happen if I painted the tables early?

Answer
Definitely make sure the wood is completely dry. Once it is, make sure the wood has been smoothed down (by sanding), then apply a primer, then paint. Good Luck, and Have Fun Painting them!

Can I bring my rats camping with me for 3 days?

K-9Kara

We are going camping for 3 days at a campground only 20 minutes away, I have to pet rats. My moms afriad that they will stink up the trailor but if I sat them on the picnic table under the canopy during the day and bring them in at night they should be ok. We have plenty of room in the trailor for the cage. Should we bring them or leave them at home?

Answer
If you are going camping the last thing you want to do is keep your pets outdoors, especially at night. The next morning they will not be there. My husband and I took our cat camping many times in the RV. We had his litter box, which we cleaned regularly and it never smelled in there. If you keep them caged, then bring them. But like I said, don't even leave them outside without their cage in the daytime. If other campers see rats, they will either alert the campground office or take matters into their own hands. Most people think of pets as dogs and cats...not rats.

How much does it cost to travel Europe?

camping tables prices image

Giuliana

Wondering how much it would cost for plane tickets, eating out, hotels, and renting cars and all that if my family and I were to travel Spain, Italy, France and Germany? Possibly the UK also. An estimated price of how much you think it would cost? Its just me my mom and dad. THANK YOU!

Answer
The actual price will depend on where you're starting from, exactly when you come to Europe, the kinds of places you stay in, how you get around and what you see, do and eat. Generally, you can get by for around $100 (plus airfare) staying in cheap hostels and watching your budget. However, if you're with you family, you'll probably be in hotels rather than hostels and that will be more expensive. I generally spend around 100 to 150 euro per night for the places I stay. There are usually s little cheaper budget options. Here are some resources that can help you plan and check options and current prices for your trip:

http://www.kayak.com/ - airfares & hotels; the explore function is useful for finding the less expensive places to fly into from your starting point.

http://www.skyscanner.it/ - particularly good for budget flights within Europe, but you can also use everywhere as a destination to do something like the explore option on Kayak. You may not need the airfares, but you can compare to the cost of the trains to get around.

http://www.seat61.com/ - a great train site with details about railpasses. It can be cheaper to buy individual tickets than passes. This site will tell you how to determine whether you're better off with a railpass or individual tickets or some combination for your trip. It also details how to use the pass and what to avoid to get the best use out of a pass. Most high speed, international and night trains require reservations and will require you to pay a supplement when you use a railpass. You need to be aware that a railpass is almost always more expensive for trains here if you're going to exclusively travel in Italy. Trains are an excellent way to get around here. If you want cars, check sites like Avis, Europcar, Sixt. Be aware that drop off fees can be high if you rent a car in one crountry and leave it in another. You also need to know that you would need to buy a tax sticker for the windshield before driving on an autobahn in either Austria or Switzerland.

http://www.venere.com/ - hotels/B&Bs - prices for the same hotel can vary hugely depending on the season and what local events are going on.

http://www.hostelbookers.com/ - hostels.

http://www.monasterystays.com/ - monasteries & convents that offer accommodations

You can also look into camping or couch surfing as cheaper alternatives for accommodations.

http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.ht⦠- festivals, exhibitions and events

http://www.backpackeurope.com/ - information & advice

For sightseeing prices: check the websites for entrance fees for the museums & galleries you're interested in. I spend anywhere between nothing and 40 euro ($49) a day depending on exactly what I go to see when out exploring. For food, I spend around 25 to 50 euro ($31 to $62) for a meal, but you can eat for less. I was in Venice recently and paid 32 euro for lunch at Da Raffaele sitting at a canal side table with the gondolas passing by. Here in Italy, You can get a whole pizza for 8 to 13 euro ($10 - $16) or a pasta dish in the same range. Panini or pizza by the slice is less. For reference, a McDonalds McMenu classico (medium) is going for around 7.50 euro ($9.24). While you can eat cheaply most of the time, I would recommend getting a good local meal from time to time; that's part of the overall experience that it would be a shame to miss. When I travel, I like to try the local specialties and the good restaurants. Try the saltimboca or a pasta Cacio e Pepe in Rome.

I've been turned into a vampire and for the cure i went to see this woman and she said i need to bring her gem stones. where are the gem stones.

Answer
The Grand Stone Gems can be found in the following places:

* Chorrol Mages' Guild Hall - Two are located in a display case on the main floor (Very Hard lock). There are also three more in another display case when you go in there is a door to the left, it's the second display case along.

* Buy from Aurelinwae or Calindil in the Mystic Emporium, Imperial City Market District

* Imperial City Arcane University - One can be found in a display case (Very Hard lock) next to a couple other Grand Soul Gems (which are not empty). Another can be found in a display case (Very Hard Lock) in the Arcane University Mage's Quarters. Another one may be found on a desk on the second floor of the enchanting building. Not empty in the PS3 version

* Drakelowe - Located in the basement (to get to basement, you have to go through trapdoor in the fireplace). Not empty in the PS3 version

* Crayfish Cave - Down the Corbolo river to the south-southeast. Located on the fourth level of the cave, beyond secret door.

* Nornal ruin - West of Drakelowe. On the map it is just left of the capital N where it says The Nibenay Bay.

* Squandered Mine - Northeast of Drakelowe. Located behind a secret door on the bottom level, guarded by an undead creature.

* Swampy Cave - Swampy Cave Dry Rock Run specifically, just head south a bit from SC to find this entrance. The gem is located in one of the chests in the large room where there are 2 swamp trolls. The Gem is not empty in the PS3 version /The Gem is not present in the 360 version

* Most Mages Guild Halls will have at least one Grand Soul Gem for sale.

* You can receive 4 gems via the Sins of the Father quest. Not empty in the PS3 version or the PC version

* You can also pick pocket them from one person in almost every mages guild place by pick pocketing the people who sell stuff in their respective mages guild halls This seems to be the best way to get the gems in the PS3 version

Revisit Melisande and give her the gems. She will now start on the cure, and asks you to collect these ingredients for her:

* Six (6) cloves of garlic, best found in Weynon Priory or the Imperial Legion mess hall. It can be bought in ready numbers at Main Ingredient in the Imperial City Market District. Several cloves can also be found hanging in Glarthir's basement in Skingrad.

* Five (5) nightshade leaves, easily found at the Main Ingredient in the Imperial City and on a table in the library of the Chorrol Mages Guild. One leaf can be found from Anvil's Mages Guild, second floor, Carahil's room. They can also be found in Frostcrag Spire.

* Two (2) bloodgrass shoots, found in Oblivion. Can be bought at the Main Ingredient in the Imperial City Market District. They can also be found in Frostcrag Spire.

* Blood of an Argonian.

* Dust of the powerful vampire, Hindaril.

Remember that you can't easily buy items when you are in advanced stages of Vampirism.

Blood of an Argonian:

Use the dagger provided by Melisande to stab any Argonian in the game. If caught, pay the bounty. Also, you may innocently get Argonian blood by facing one in the Arena, or through fighting an argonian in the wild, most commonly a marauder archer in a dungeon, etc. Also, if you have finished the entire dark brotherhood quest line, you can return to the camp bog water, and may stab the argonian there (if you didnt kill him) as he plays no part in the rest of the game

Vampire Dust:

You must kill the vampire Hindaril, found in Redwater Slough off of the Panther River. Hindaril is behind a door with a very hard lock. The key is beyond an underwater passage and in a chest. Once you find him, attack immediately so he cannot become armed. After killing him, loot his coffin. Also, if your Acrobatics are good enough, you can reach another coffin in the room which contains some items.

Finishing the Quest:

Return to Melisande and talk to her. After a day, she will have a potion. It will show up as a single item in your inventory. Do not drink it. If you do, it is removed from your inventory and you cannot complete the quest. Instead, bring it to the castle for Rona Hassildor. Talk to the steward again, and tell her that you have the cure.

She will lead you to the Chamber of the Lost and Melisande will revive Rona long enough for the cure to be administered. Unfortunately for the count, she then dies. After about two days, the count will tell you to return and talk to the steward in a day. Once you return, he will reward you with a decent amount of gold - 1000 or higher depending on your level. You will be free of vampirism when you drink the remaining potion.

Alternate Solution:

If you own the official The Vile Lair add-on and have upgraded it, it is possible to cure your vampirism at any time using the Font of Renewal in the Vile Cloister and the Purgeblood Salts found near it. This can be done as many t

I want to impress my friends, but i dont want them to get me back with something better than what i already got.... So please help me..... I am thinking the ipad 2 , but please !!!!!!!! Help me i need the best tablet in the world !!!!!!!!!

Answer
Definitely get the ipad 2!

It's an unbelievably cool product! I've had it for a week now, and it has exceeded my expectations in every area but one. It is such a pleasurable experience to hold it and interact with the machine. It is a very intuitive, tactile, and personal interaction with the web.

Having a touch screen to interact with the web is a very different experience than using a mouse.
It is NOT supposed to be a netbook, so reviews which compare what it doesn't have, miss the point.
This is a whole new computing device to accomplish perhaps 80% of what most people use computers for for all the basic uses (email, web surfing, music, movies (the Netflix app rocks!), games, ebook, magazine reading (Zinio is great), and the news (the USA Today app is a joy to use) it is great.

I have already been finding myself on my laptop much less often than before.

The iWork apps are a pleasure to use. The one area that seems to be more convoluted than it should be, is printing. You can't print directly from it. You have to either email it to yourself, or transfer the file over when you sync with iTunes. But it looks like the 4.0 version of the operating system is going to provide a lot of fixes which people are looking for.

A few years from now, tablets like this will be everywhere and those who are on computers are mainly using them for work. I knew the ipad 2 would be a big hit when my 70 old mother, after seeing mine, decided she was going to get one too!

As for buying them, your best bet for the cheapest price is off eBay where i've seen them for $170 shipped or on Amazon.com

I've provided links to both below, your choice and best of luck!!

What is the best area to raise a family that is not too overpriced but still has good schools and is clean and safe?

Answer
I'm 13, and my family relocated to San Diego from NY last August, and I love it here! : )
2200 is a hard number for a family of your size. my family is renting a house in encinitas for 2800, and it's 4 bedroom, 3 bath. there are 6 people in my family too.
My mom really wanted a good school district, she's nuts about the best schools for us, and a good place for me and my sisters and not too expensive, but nice.
We are in Encinitas and 3 miles from the ocean, and San Dieguito School District is very good, 2nd best probably only to Poway (which I would not recommend, because it is really far Inland, and it gets amazingly hot.) I would recommend the Encinitas/ La Costa/Olivenhain area. It is a little bit cheaper than Delmar and La Jolla, but just as nice. very affordable.
My middle school, Diegueno, is great, and I'm a "gifted kid". They have honors classes in Math and English, and... yeah. it has about 900 students, 30 per class except for the honors classes, 25 students for those. the teachers give lots of help if you need it, they challenge us. there are a lot of clubs at lunch that you can join, or just eat lunch with you friends in the quad, or the grassy area and stuff. the school is very cooperative, and also they have many elective choices, semester or year long. there is something for everybody. I love it!
my sisters go to Flora Vista elementary, one of the best elementarys in the EUSD. it's really nice, they have great teachers, and they also have combined classes (ex. 4th/5th) and everyone switches out for math to their level. the teachers challenge them, help them, and they like parental involvement. they offer lots of programs too, that's how my sisters got started on karate. (btw, they're 8 and 9, going into 3rd and 5th grade) sports, also. parents are really nice, my parents made lots of friends here in a short amount of time.
i don't know much about the high schools yet but you can choose your high school out of 4, i believe. there is LCC (la costa canyon) which is where lots of people go. they are the sporty school, because they have the most sports-oriented program, but they also have good academics. most of the other kids who don't go to LCC go to SDA (san dieguito academy) which is more academic-oriented, but they also have a wide selection of sports. they also have a theater and arts programs. then there is canyon crest academy, which is the newest and it's great! they have great technology and athletics and academics and arts. it's a lot of people's favorite. last is TPHS (torrey pines high school) and not many people go there at all. pretty much just a normal high school.
Our neighborhood has 3 different parks in walking distance, and they all have playgrounds and trails and grassy area. Two have community pools and tennis courts.its also a very safe area, encinitas has a low crime rate and everybody's always out, and most kids walk or bike to and from school with friends or hang out with their friends after school at the parks. There're great views in this area of the mountains and canyons and everything. The beach is close, it takes about 5 minutes to get there by car (we went yesterday to moonlight beach, pretty nice!) it's clean, and there's easy parking and fire pits and tables and it's just a great beach. there are a lot of nice resteraunts, and if you come here, try leucadia pizza, it's the best! : ) downtown encinitas is really nice, too. lots of places over there.
everyone here walks, it's great weather for it too, and it's easy to get around because most of the streets have sidewalks, bike lanes, and spaces for cars to park also. encinitas rec and the schools offer lots of programs and sports that are at different levels, most of our sport teams are some of the top in the area : )
if you're religious there are also a bunch of churches and temples around in encinitas, we go to san dieguito united methodist church, and it's 2 blocks from the beach, so we usually go there afterwards, it's very welcoming, and they have a great kids program and youth stuff.
if you want more information, edit your question asking for more on encinitas area and i'll tell you as much as i can! i hope this helped you and i'm sorry it's so long, but i think where we are is also a great place for you guys! : )

Is there supposed to be a hose that is attached to my TABLE TOP propane bbq tank?

camping tables for grills on Portable Propane Stove Camping Table Top Stove Portable Grill
camping tables for grills image

a_dlr16

I have this table top gas grill...similar to this one shown here:
http://www.donkihote.com/images15000000/13181844.jpg

I've assembled it and I'm ready to attach the propane tank. But there is no hose that attaches the regulator knob to the actual heat plate. The knob being the dial that I attach the propane tank to. Is there not supposed to be a hose that controls the propane instead of it just flowing freely like that? I just want to make sure I don't blow up by trying to cook a burger. Am I making sense? Can anyone help?

Answer
The dial is the regulator valve control. This determines whether the burner is off or on and also the flame temperature (flame height).

It reall depends on your particular usage as to what fuel source to use.

Hikers & bikers prefer the portability of the 1 lb. disposable canister (available at Wal-Mart & sporting goods stores for about $2.00 each). However, this will only run a grill of this type for a couple of hours total burn time.

If you are going camping or using on regular outings and have the room, purchasing a 20# cylinder (available at Wal-Mart or Sam's) & adapter hose (Paulin # 4122 Hose @ www.propaneproducts.com or equivalent) will be the best & cheapest option in the long run....About 30 hours running time total fer fill.

Always check your connections for leaks with a soapy solution, for safety.

Do you have advice for what to bring on a camping trip?

Breandan

A few men are going on a camping trip. We're planning on going to Harriman State Park in New York near New York City.
Besides the obvious: tent, sleeping bag, cooler, bug spray, food, beer; what do you recommend we bring?

Answer
Essentials
The first items on my list are what I call "Essentials." It's possible I might not need one of these items on a particular trip, but if I do (and chances are, I will), I'll have it. These are important things every camper will probably need sooner or later, including:

â¢Cash, credit cards, checks
â¢Required licenses and permits (for camping, hunting, fishing, etc.)
â¢Waterproof matches and butane lighter
â¢Multi-tool and/or Swiss army knife
â¢Toilet paper
â¢Flashlight, spare batteries and bulb
â¢Maps and compass or GPS
â¢Rain gear
â¢Extra clothing
â¢Insect repellent
Clothing

â¢Pants, shorts
â¢Shirts
â¢Underclothes
â¢Shoes/boots
â¢Socks
â¢Belt
â¢Jacket, coat
â¢Hat, cap, toboggan
â¢Gloves
â¢Swimwear
â¢Nightwear

Toiletries

â¢Toothbrush, paste
â¢Soap, shampoo
â¢Mirror
â¢Comb, brush
â¢Deodorant
â¢Washcloth, towels
Miscellaneous

â¢Extra prescription glasses/contacts
â¢Prescription medicines
â¢Watch, alarm clock
â¢Sunglasses
â¢Sunscreen, lip balm
Camping Gear

If you're staying in a trailer or RV, you may not need to worry about many of the items listed below. But in this article, we'll assume you're going to be tent camping. That being the case, some items you may want to bring include:

â¢Tent, tent fly, poles, stakes and ropes (set up the tent before leaving to be sure everything is there and you know how to put it up)
â¢Hammer or hatchet (for driving tent stakes; keep it in the tent bag)
â¢Ground cloth (to go under the tent and keep it clean and dry)
â¢Sleeping bags
â¢Ground pads, mattresses and/or cots
â¢Pillows
â¢Tarp (has many uses)
â¢Lantern(s) (including fuel, mantles, funnel, batteries as necessary)
â¢Folding chairs, stools, tables
â¢Extension cords (for camps with electric hookups)
â¢Ice chest
â¢Beverage/water jugs
â¢Camping shower
â¢Ax, hatchet and/or shovel
â¢Broom
Food

Plan your meals before leaving home, and make a list of all food items you'll need using your menus as a guide. Some campers like to have elaborate outdoor meals, while others prefer not to cook at all. Either way, here's a list to help you remember some of what you might need:

â¢Meats (hamburger, hot dogs, steaks, bacon, sausage, chicken, etc.)
â¢Dairy products (milk, cheese, etc.)
â¢Eggs
â¢Bread, buns, biscuits, crackers
â¢Vegetables (potatoes, beans, corn, tomatoes, onions, peppers, mushrooms, etc.)
â¢Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish, salad dressings, syrup, BBQ sauce, etc.)
â¢Drinks (coffee, tea, sodas, Kool-aid, juice, etc.)
â¢Staples (flour, corn meal, sugar, salt, pepper, herbs, spices, butter, cooking oil, etc.)
â¢Snack foods, dessert ingredients

Plan your meals before leaving home, and make a list of all food items you'll need using your menus as a guide.

Cooking, Food Service and Cleanup

The items you'll need for preparing meals, serving them and cleaning up will once again vary greatly according to your own preferences. Here are some to consider for your list:

â¢Camp stove, fuel
â¢Charcoal, lighter fluid
â¢Firewood
â¢Grill, cooking grate
â¢Reflector oven
â¢Skillet, pots and pans
â¢Carving/cutting knives
â¢Spatula, tongs, serving fork and spoon
â¢Can opener
â¢Measuring cups and spoons
â¢Aluminum foil
â¢Plates, cups, bowls
â¢Flatware (forks, spoons, knives)
â¢Scouring pads, detergent
â¢Zip-loc bags
â¢Garbage bags
â¢Paper towels, dish towels
â¢Oven mitt, pot holder
Emergency Gear

"Plan for the worse and hope for the best." That old saying has merit when you're camping. Always be prepared just in case something unexpected happens by having on hand a tool kit that includes a hammer, screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches; a repair kit that contains such things as duct tape, wire, nylon twine, superglue and rope; and a first aid kit that includes all or some of the following basic items:

â¢Band-Aids
â¢Gauze pads
â¢Adhesive tape
â¢Aspirin
â¢Tweezers
â¢Needle
â¢Moleskin
â¢Single-edge razor blade
â¢Antacid
â¢Ace bandage
â¢Diarrhea medication
â¢Cold medication
â¢Laxative
â¢Bandages
â¢Sunburn relief
â¢Thermometer
â¢Sting kill swabs
â¢Eye drops
â¢Scissors
â¢Cortisone (anti-itch) cream
â¢Antibiotic cream
â¢Antihistamine such as Benad

what are the (dis)advantages of a fixed dining table design (granite slab and two wooden bench) ?

benches dining tables image

thens

I would like some suggestion on the dining table design
The design that I have in mind is a fixed concrete/granite slab with a support on either sides or one side
connecting to the wall with covered wooden benches (top side cushion) and shelves with door on the easily accessible side.

What, if any, are the problems with the concrete slab table design ?

Answer
Fixed dining table design is great as long as you don't have any plan to do renovation works in the area where you placed your dining table.

Do you think I can pull off a party in my small apartment? Tips and advice?

gypsy50309

We don't have a dining table (or room for one), so I'm thinking of an appetizer buffet with finger foods to have sitting or standing.
This is for family, so they'll be all ages. Do you think it will be fine having them just sit on our couch, a bench, etc?

Answer
Of course. Just go for it.

Tip

I want a medium size SUV, or a cute car. I don't want it to be low to the ground car that's i think that's uncomfortable. and it has to be under 5,000 dollars.

Answer
Honda CR-V would be perfect for you.

It's a compact SUV with lots of room and gets 30MPG (HWY). It's also fun to drive and also has a picnic table for camping. Seats can be folded down to create a large bed.

I owned a '98 CR-V and loved it. Traded it in after 10 years & 140,000 miles. Never had any problems with the engine or transmission.

What do you know about 4/10 in history?

Anybody ever had a small wedding ceremony on a beach?

beach reception tables on Glass Lantern Centerpieces

Ben K

My girlfriend is from Romania. She will be coming back to the states to be with me and we are planning on getting married. She always talks about the beach and everything. So, I thought maybe we could just go to the local county clerk to get the license, then drive down to the beach and get married. Her family of course is in Romania, so there really won't be anyone from her side of the family, so we are probably going to keep it pretty small. Then maybe after we are married we can travel to Romania and show her family. Any ideas or tips about beach weddings? Thanks.

Answer
A girlfriend of mine had a beach wedding not so long ago, and let me tell you it was an interesting event! It was very simple- minister along with parents on each side and an additional witness on each side. I suppose these would have been considered a 'bridesmaid' and a groomsman had it been a larger affair.

Consider the tide! Especially if you're going to have any 'permanent' fixtures set up for your wedding ceremony. Many people don't consider things like tide and weather, especially if their party is small and casual. Are you having your reception on the beach too? That'd be awesome- maybe a bonfire. My girlfriend and her groom had a large dining table set up, and it was all decked out for this incredible reception dinner. She used this company she found online for many of her wedding decorations, and she had the cutest favors (great beach-themed stuff!). I have the site...they have the best prices too!

I live in the south. Would it be too country for me to have fried chicken at my reception?

Melissa

I know it sounds kind of country to have fried chicken at a wedding reception, but that is what I like! I want a variety of foods because my fiance and I have a mix of heritages. I am German, Hungarian, and Choctaw Indian. He is German and Italian. I want German, Mexican, Chinese, and soul food. Would it be too wierd or should I get what we like and not worry about everyone else since it is our day?

Answer
Hey Mark's wife - 2 - B!

When my wife and I were to get married, her mother had these plans for a reception that would have made a state dinner look like a hot dog cook-off! There were two caterers, an expensive hall, flowers from every florist that she could find in the pages of the phone book :-s !

Kathy & I needed a break, so one weekend we went up to Northern California to go hiking, we came across this older church, nothing spectacular, and we started talking... to make a long story short,

Our wedding and reception was at a small white church in Long Beach, California. We served fried chicken and all the fixins on picnic tables set-up behind the church. We had no live band but we did have music. The children were able to run around and chase each other. We had a country wedding and neither of us are from the country or the South.

My wife has been gone for 15 years now, but I still have my favorite picture. It is Kathy, resting against an oak tree in the church yard. Sleeping on her lap is our flower girl. Kathy is playing with the flower girls hair by touching the baby's breath that was in the hair.

That day, TRULY was about love and families!

I hope you have a blessed day, no matter what you serve!

Congratulations!

James in San Diego

How do you organize a camping trip?

Smiles

I know nothing about camping and want to organize a trip. How do I find a camp site? What other things should I consider? Is there a fee? What do I need for the trip? Thanks.

Answer
If you go to a campground, there is usually a fee. In NY, that fee runs about $20 / night for a state campground.

I typically make reservations online. The website http://www.reserveamerica.com/ handles the reservations for many campgrounds. I know the sites I go to in New York are handled through reserve america.

In terms of what you need, you will minimally need:

Tent,
Sleeping bags
Mats or mattresses unless you are ok with a harder surface to sleep on
Camp stove (optional but handy)

How to decorate for a backyard summer camp party?

Q. My 3 year old daughter is having a camp theme party and want to decorate so you really feel like you are camping

Answer
Make a large wooden sign at the entrance to the "Camp Site" and have other signs pointing the way to the toilets and showers, picnic area and wildlife trail.
Set the tents around a central seating area with the campfire as a centerpiece. Lay out low benches for sitting on or just use mats or planks of wood balanced on rocks.
Decorate the inside of the tents with streamers and balloons
Around the edges of the camp, erect some citronella torches. These will keep the bugs away and add to the camp atmosphere.
Place cuddly toys in the tress and bushes for the younger kids to discover or for the older kids, hang plastic bugs around the camp. Use glow in the dark bugs and stars which will be fun later on when it gets dark.
Hang multi colored Chinese lanterns around the garden. Some kids just can't help playing with candles so be careful where you place them.
Set up a food table and cover with green or camouflage cloth. Use plastic tableware or tin plates and cups. Provide bug stickers for each child to personalize his/her own plate and mug. It saves muddling them up.
You can also add:
Bug stickers and tattoes
T-shirts with the name of the camp and date of the birthday camping party

cheap and quality family tent?

my family wanna go camping in several days in Georgia National Park,we need a camping tent and some cooking supplies.pls kindly recommend cheap and quality ones.thx 4 ur kindness.

Answer
As long as the weather is fair you can make almost any tent work for you. The Coleman Instant Tent 6 or 8 person models are preferred by many because they are easy to set-up and take down, but run in the $150-200 range. The Coleman Sundome Chris recommends is a good, low-priced tent, but is not as spacious or easy to setup as the Instant Tent, thought it would probably do better in the rain. Choose the one that makes the most sense based on your family size, allowing extra capacity so you can keep your clothing inside without being cramped.

You can use blankets from home or buy sleeping bags to make your bed. If choosing sleeping bags, pick a model that is rated at least 20*F lower than the coldest temperature you expect to encounter. You can always unzip the bag if it gets too warm, or sleep on top. Again, Coleman makes some decent fair-weather sleeping bags, also look at Kelty and Slumberjack. Expect to pay $50 and up for a decent sleeping bag, typically the more money you spend the smaller the bag will be when packed away.

Whether you use blankets or a sleeping bag you will want to have some padding underneath you. Some use cots, which cost around $100 each. Some are ok with foam pads, costing from $8 to $50. Then there's self-inflating mattresses, $50-150, which use expandable foam and air for padding and insulation. Finally you can use regular blow-up air mattresses, which range from $20 to over $100 and are available in single, double, queen and king sizes. In colder weather, foam and self-inflating mattresses are the best choice, as cots and air mattresses provide no insulation value.

In terms of cooking, a two-burner Coleman propane stove costs around $50, and disposable 16oz propane canisters cost between $2.50 and $3.50, each will last about 2 days. You can bring pots, pans and cooking utensils from home. You might need to bring one or two folding tables (1 to cook at, the other to eat at, about $45 each) and folding chairs ($15 to 75 each, depending on model). And a battery-operated lantern ($40-75). Use disposable plates, bowls and eating utensils to save money and time cleaning. You will also need coolers to keep your food and beverages cold. The Coleman Xtreme coolers are the best available for the money, and I recommend you get two: one for food and the other for beverages.

Don't forget some trash bags, napkins, paper towels, dish soap and hand soap. And a collapsible trash can is convenient. Also, a first aid kit is a good idea.

All this stuff is available at most WalMart stores.

Where to eat, what to do, places to have fun in and around Birmingham, AL on an upcoming weekend trip? I can find all the highly publicized places in guidebooks; I'm looking for a few insider's tips, sights and restaurants. Thanks!

Here are the newest user reviews about locations in Alabama. To read even more reviews, search for a specific city, hotel or attraction at the top of the left column on this page.
Orange Beach: Calypso Joe's: "Joe's was so-so"
Jul 22, 2007 BananaSouth, South
The atmosphere was really neat. The food was pretty good. The only problem was the service. We expected to wait for a table, that was alright. However, once we were seated, we didn't see a waitress for 15 minutes. We were pretty much forgotten about! The alcoholic drinks were $7 each. Our meals were $20 each. The whole tab came...

Huntsville: Best Western Rocket City Inn & Suites: "Overcharged"
Jul 22, 2007 suzyq6315, Florida
I was charged an additional $545.72. They charged me for another room. They did credit my card, but as you know these things do not show up for days and because of this my account was overdrawn and I had to sleep in my car for 3 nights and was unable to get to work until my boss put money...

Mobile: Cuisine of India: "Favorite Indian Restaurant in Florida Panhandle"
Jul 22, 2007 PensacolaRider, Pensacola
Modest little Indian restaurant in shopping center; minimial atmosphere, place could be cleaner, but very tasty Indian cuisine. We routinely travel 50+ miles from Pensacola to enjoy Sunday lunch here. Buffet for two, with nan, dessert and chai tea for about $20, excluding tip - it's well worth the trip. Food even better with recent new cook.

Birmingham: TownePlace Suites Birmingham Homewood: "Worst service ever!!!!!!"
Jul 22, 2007 rboz82, rboz82
Picture on Website is not fitting of this establishment. As soon as I walked in to the loobby to check-in I was unimpressed. The table and the floor were dirty, nobody was at the front desk to check me in( I waited 10 mins b4 anyone came) and there were no rooms ready(which wasnt a problem because I was early)....

Orange Beach: Tacky Jack's Tavern & Grill: "tacky jacks"

Tacky Jacks is tacky, what else would you expect. But the breakfast is great and I've always had good, friendly service. The farmers omelet and a bloody mary are a great start to the day.

Orange Beach: Perdido Beach Resort: "Nice Stay"
Jul 22, 2007 brit_travel_fan, Baton Rouge, Louisiana
I attended a conference at the PBR last week (the 10th time I've stayed at the hotel in the past 15 years). The staff was friendly, as always. The food was generally outstanding, both at the catered conference events and in the cafes and Voyagers restaurant, and the prices weren't bad, especially for a beachside resort ($7 for a huge...

Stayed here two separate nights last week, I just walked in and they had a room, and even gave me a gift bag for being a priority club member the first night.I was surprised at how clean the rooms were, good water pressure in the shower and I received my wake up call on time, and they had a...

Thinking about going on a cruise for the first time. What are the best and worst parts of the experience?

Philip G

Also, which Cruise Line would you recommend? And why.

Answer
I have been on 2 cruises both with Carnival. I went of Carnival Valor and Carnival Glory...I absolutely love cruising, it is so interesting to go to new and exciting places. The worst part is probably having to participate in the life boat drill before you leave, but it is not that bad (safety first right) but then once that is over get ready for a week (or how ever long your cruise is) of FUN! The best parts are the destinations, the food, drinks, clubs, shows, everything pretty much! On Carnival you sit at the same dinner table each night at a specified time which you choose while booking, and you have a the same waiter and assistant each night, so you get to know them. The food at dinner is delcious and you can order whatever and how ever much you want, plus the desserts are really good. Each night during dinner the waiters, sing and dance and the cruisers can sing and dance along, it is a lot of fun.

I have been to the Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Thomas (once there we took a water taxi over to the near by island of St. John and then went to the beach at Trunk Bay (it is the most gorgoeus beach you could ever image like from a post card, here is a link to a picture of it http://dustincwillis.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/st-john-trunk-bay-usvi-national-park-hz.jpg ) so if you decide to go on a cruise where one of your stops is St. Thomas head over to St. John and go to Trunk Bay you won't regret it....anyways on my other cruise we went to the Cayaman Island, Costa Maya, Isla Roatan, and Beleize..we swam, held, and fed giant sting rays in Cayman Islands, in Costa Maya we relaxed on the beach alll day, on Isla Roatan (off the coast of Honduras) we went zip lining in the jungle (the funniest thing I have EVER done in my life, it was amazing) and in Beleize we went cave tubing...we did all this great stuff because my aunt is a travel agent and set up all this before we went so when we got to each port we had a driver with our name on a sign and he took us to our activity.

Sorry that was really long, but I wanted to tell you what I have done, you should defiantly go on a cruise, you will have memories that will last forever and you meet great people!!

I'm in 7th grade. My school has a lot of land but not a lot of equipment. We have benches and tables, 2 small basketball courts (both broken nets), and a soccer net. Please Help!

Answer
In 7th grade we used to play a game called butts up, where you would throw a tennis ball against a wall, and if the other guy missed the throw he had to stand against the wall and you could nail his butt with the tennis ball. Pretty fun :)

What colors are best for my humble patio furniture?

Q. I am moving into a home with a cute little side, covered patio. It is rectangular with several small trees on the side. Nothing special. Just some concrete and a wood cover. I currently own some nice deep green plastic chairs and a white bench with table. What colors would you recommend spray painting them? All the same color or separate? Dark wicker planters, stone planters, and a medium stone waterfall will be coming with me as well. Thank you!

Answer
Either match the green or beige, white shows dirt so much. If they are nice and pretty now then don't spray paint them until the need to have a nice little touch up to look new again. Does the wood cover need to be treated yet? If so, a nice red cedar finish with the other stuff painted to match would look good.
